The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) took a breather on Friday after a strong seven-week rally. Market consolidation kicked in as the benchmark KSE-100 index closed at 145,383 points, marking a modest decline of 264 points, or 0.18%. The dip followed cautious investor sentiment triggered by falling foreign exchange reserves and rising government bond yields.
Forex reserves drop adds pressure
The slowdown came after the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) reported a $72 million decline in foreign exchange reserves. As of August 1, the total reserves stood at $14.23 billion. This marks the third consecutive weekly fall, primarily attributed to external debt repayments.
According to Ali Najib, Deputy Head of Trading at Arif Habib Limited, the reserve drop created a note of caution in the market, causing some investors to lock in profits after the recent rally. Concerns over monetary tightening and new trade figures also weighed on sentiment.
Profit-taking hits heavyweights
Selective profit-taking pulled down several blue-chip stocks. Market giants like Engro Fertilisers, Lucky Cement, Systems Limited, Mari Petroleum, and Hub Power Company collectively dragged the index lower by 399 points.
However, some positive momentum emerged later in the day. Renewed buying in Engro Holdings, Fauji Fertiliser Company, Oil and Gas Development Company, and MCB Bank helped recover part of the losses, contributing a combined 426 points to the index.

Steady trading activity
Despite the mild correction, trading remained robust. Volume stood at 548 million shares, while the traded value reached Rs45.5 billion. Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) led the market in volume, with 22 million shares exchanged during the session.
The session displayed a mix of caution and confidence. Investors appeared to be repositioning their portfolios in light of macroeconomic developments and potential interest rate changes.
Weekly performance stays strong
Friday’s pullback did not erase the gains made earlier in the week. The KSE-100 index still posted a strong weekly advance, adding 4,348 points or 3.08% overall. The market opened the week at 141,963, touched an intra-week high of 146,813, and hit a low of 141,441 before closing at 145,383.
The broader trend remains bullish, but analysts believe the index may now enter a consolidation phase. Short-term corrections are expected as investors respond to economic data, policy signals, and corporate earnings announcements.
Key levels to watch
Market analysts foresee 145,000 as the initial support level, followed by a stronger floor at 143,000. On the upside, the 150,000 mark is being watched as the next major resistance point. The psychological weight of that level, combined with fresh economic triggers, will likely dictate the market’s next direction.
Rising government bond yields, influenced by expectations of tighter monetary policy, are also expected to shape investor behavior in the coming weeks. Additionally, global trends and geopolitical developments may factor into investor decision-making.
Looking ahead
As the PSX heads into the new week, market watchers will closely monitor developments in external financing, inflation numbers, and any policy updates from the State Bank. The market’s ability to hold above the 145,000 support zone will determine whether the recent rally resumes or deeper consolidation sets in.
With macroeconomic challenges lingering and investor sentiment fluctuating, a cautious but optimistic tone may dominate the market’s outlook in the near term.
