Asad Umar, the head of Pakistan’s National Command and Operations Centre (NCOC) — the agency in charge of the country’s coronavirus war — said on Thursday that COVID-19 vaccine registration will be open to all civilians after Eid.

According to Dawn, Umar has described the next five to six weeks as “important” in Pakistan’s fight against the third coronavirus wave.
Umar said that so far, 1.1 million people have been vaccinated by the government’s vaccine scheme, while 14,000 people have received a vaccination via the private sector.
He said that China is Pakistan’s “main source” of vaccines and that after Sinopharm, the CanSino vaccine will be available after Eid.
“After Eid, we will be able to vaccinate more than 125,000 people every day,” Umar said, according to Dawn.
According to the paper, the minister voiced concern about the increasing number of patients needing urgent care, which he claims is much higher than the first coronavirus wave.
“Strict adherence to SOPs (standard operating procedures) can help to reduce the rising infection rate,” he said.
Registration is now available to those above the age of 50, as well as healthcare staff. The government has also agreed to allow people over the age of 80 in Islamabad and Punjab to get vaccinated at home.
