Public Outcry and Celebrity Backlash

The outcry against “Barzakh” was swift and intense. Celebrities such as Maria B, Aima Baig, former actress and TV host Najia Beyg, and actress Anum Fayyaz were vocal in their criticism. They expressed their concerns about the series’ content and its potential impact on Pakistani society.

Aima Baig, a popular singer, took to social media to express her relief over the show’s removal. She stated, “I’m glad – we still have wise people handling things. This series was triggering for so many! As much as I appreciate the effort and someone having the courage to address such issues, trust me, half of the sick people we have in our society – raping 6-8-year-olds – are enjoying it, rather than being ashamed of themselves. Hats off to the maker of this series and the people who acted so well in it – but trust me, the Pakistani public is not going to change anytime soon. They are still as savage and cruel. Apologies if anyone was offended.”

Najia Beyg also shared her thoughts on the matter, explaining why she believes the “Barzakh” web series should be boycotted. She pointed out the problematic aspects of the show and its potential negative influence on viewers.

Official Statement and Series Withdrawal

In response to the public outcry and condemnation, Zindagi issued an official statement. Acknowledging the strong public sentiment in Pakistan, the platform announced the withdrawal of “Barzakh” from YouTube in Pakistan, effective August 9, 2024. The statement read, “In response to the public outcry and after careful consideration, we have decided to remove ‘Barzakh’ from YouTube in Pakistan. We respect our audience’s sentiments and hope to address their concerns with sensitivity.”

This decision underscores the significant impact that public opinion and social media campaigns can have on media content. The backlash against “Barzakh” highlights the deep cultural and societal sensitivities in Pakistan regarding the portrayal of certain issues in entertainment.

The Future of Controversial Content

The controversy surrounding “Barzakh” has sparked a broader conversation about the balance between artistic expression and cultural sensitivity. The removal of “Barzakh” from YouTube marks a significant moment in Pakistani media. It highlights the power of public opinion and the role of social media in shaping content.
