Aamir Khan recently spoke candidly about his son, Junaid Khan, and his Bollywood debut in Yash Raj Films’ Maharaj. In a conversation with Rhea Chakraborty on her podcast, Aamir opened up about his initial doubts regarding Junaid’s acting abilities and his decision not to produce Junaid’s films.
Aamir admitted that he did not initially believe Junaid would be a successful actor. “Junaid has shown a lot of promise,” Aamir acknowledged, noting that he had seen Junaid’s early efforts in acting and theatre. However, he expressed concerns about Junaid being compared to him, saying, “The tag of being Aamir Khan’s son can’t be removed, and he will have to carry this burden. I wasn’t sure that Junaid would be a good actor. He was very shy, and I was also very shy. I had the same doubts for Junaid that people once had about me.”
Aamir revealed that he made it clear to Junaid before his debut that he would not produce his films if Junaid did not prove his talent. “As a son, you might feel, ‘Arrey, aap mere liye film produce kar do,’ but I told him that if he wasn’t good, I wouldn’t be able to produce a film for him. I can’t fool my audience,” Aamir stated. Despite his doubts, Aamir noted that Junaid understood and accepted his stance, and appreciated his father’s honesty.
Aamir also shared that Junaid faced numerous rejections before landing his role in Maharaj. “Nobody could identify him as my son during auditions since he is much taller than me,” Aamir explained. He highlighted that Junaid’s first successful audition was for Maharaj, and praised his son for achieving this milestone on his own.
The actor emphasized that Junaid’s journey to securing his debut role was a result of his own efforts, free from any undue influence or favoritism. “He has done everything on his own,” Aamir concluded, expressing pride in Junaid’s perseverance and achievements.
