Govt Considers Prepaid Electricity Meters to Cut Costs

The proposed prepaid meter system would allow consumers to pay for electricity in advance.

Federal Minister for Power, Awais Leghari, announced on Monday that the ruling coalition government is exploring the installation of prepaid electricity meters, similar to those used for mobile phones. The initiative aims to combat electricity theft and improve payment reliability.

In a press conference in Multan, Leghari emphasized the government’s dedication to eradicating electricity theft and enhancing convenience for consumers. He disclosed that discussions are ongoing with power distribution companies to facilitate the distribution of a Rs45 billion relief package to all consumers.

The proposed prepaid meter system would allow consumers to pay for electricity in advance, potentially reducing theft and preventing default payments. This system is part of broader reforms the government is pursuing to address issues in the power sector.

Leghari also mentioned that the government has shared its energy reform plans and vision with the National Energy Administration of China. A key aspect of these discussions involves re-profiling Pakistan’s debt, estimated between $8.5 billion and $9 billion. This move is expected to lower electricity prices and boost demand.

Additionally, Leghari noted that the finance minister and other officials are engaging with Chinese bankers to explore potential investments in Pakistan’s power sector. One significant reform under consideration is the conversion of electricity generation plants from imported coal to locally sourced coal. This change aims to significantly reduce the cost of electricity, with the target of lowering the cost per unit from approximately 24 rupees to around 8 rupees.

Among the plants being considered for conversion are four coal-fired plants, including the government-owned Jamshoro plant. The shift to local coal is expected to cut costs and improve the overall efficiency of power generation in the country.
