Vice President Kamala Harris confronted Donald Trump head-on during a heated presidential debate on Tuesday. She targeted Trump’s stance on abortion limits, his fitness for office, and his numerous legal challenges, forcing Trump onto the defensive as both candidates sought a turning point in the closely contested election.

Harris, a former prosecutor, repeatedly unsettled Trump, who responded with several false claims. At one point, Harris mocked his campaign rallies, suggesting people left early out of boredom, to which Trump angrily boasted about having the “biggest rallies in the history of politics.” He also made an unsubstantiated claim that Haitian immigrants in Ohio were “eating the pets” of residents, which Harris dismissed as extreme.

The debate featured clashes over immigration, foreign policy, and healthcare, though policy specifics were scarce. Harris’ aggressive approach put Trump in a tough spot, and some Republicans acknowledged his struggle to stay on message. Marc Short, former chief of staff for Trump’s ex-vice president, Mike Pence, noted that Trump missed an opportunity to focus on economic issues and instead got sidetracked by Harris’ jabs.

Following the debate, pop icon Taylor Swift endorsed Harris on Instagram, boosting her campaign. Within minutes, Swift’s post garnered millions of likes, adding momentum to Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz.

PredictIt’s online market showed Trump’s chances of victory dipping during the debate, while Harris’ odds improved. Confident in her performance, Harris immediately challenged Trump to a second debate, further escalating the rivalry as the election draws closer.
