Pakistani cricketer Fakhar Zaman has finally addressed the controversy surrounding his October post in support of Babar Azam. The incident, which stirred debate during Pakistan’s home series against England, highlighted the tensions between players, media, and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Fakhar’s remarks shed light on the circumstances and intentions behind his post, while also addressing speculations about his exclusion from the team.

The Controversial Post

During the England series, Fakhar Zaman took to his official X account (formerly Twitter) to defend Babar Azam amid mounting criticism. At the time, Babar faced calls for exclusion due to underwhelming performances, and Fakhar voiced his disappointment over the unwarranted negativity directed at the star batter.

Fakhar clarified that his post was never intended to criticize the PCB’s decisions. “I made the tweet before the team announcement,” Fakhar explained in a recent interview. “It was aimed at journalists and former players who were undermining Babar’s contributions.”

He emphasized that his words were misunderstood. “People thought I criticized the board, but that’s 100% wrong. My issue was with those disregarding Babar’s achievements,” he added. Fakhar admitted that, in hindsight, he might have avoided the post, knowing the controversies it could spark.

PCB’s Response and Fakhar’s Exclusion

Following his post, the PCB issued a show-cause notice to Fakhar, and he was left out of central contracts. He was also excluded from tours to Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. The PCB cited fitness concerns for his absence, but critics speculated his public support for Babar was the real reason.

Fakhar maintained that his exclusion was unrelated to his post. He shared that he had requested rest due to health issues and was later diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. “I was unwell and had agreed with the PCB to take two months off. I didn’t even know about my sickness when the team was leaving for Australia,” he revealed.

Defending Babar Azam’s Legacy

Babar Azam, a cornerstone of Pakistan cricket, faced heavy criticism at the time of Fakhar’s post. Fakhar’s defense of Babar stemmed from frustration over media and former players’ calls for his exclusion. “It bothered me that people were disregarding his services to the team,” Fakhar stated.

He emphasized that his post was an emotional response to the negativity. “I felt strongly about what was being said, but I wouldn’t have tweeted after the team announcement as I am also a cricketer and PCB’s contracted player,” Fakhar said.

Health Challenges and Recovery

Fakhar also shared insights into his health issues. Hyperthyroidism, which he was diagnosed with during his break, made playing difficult. “Looking back, I am thankful I didn’t go with the team. You can’t perform in such a condition,” he remarked.

A Lesson in Loyalty

Fakhar Zaman’s candid remarks highlight the fine balance between loyalty, personal expression, and professional obligations. His support for Babar Azam underscores the unity among teammates, even amid controversies. Fakhar’s health challenges and recovery journey now set the stage for his return, as he aims to refocus on his cricketing career.
