The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced a groundbreaking development to enhance international connectivity. Through the 2Africa Submarine Cable system, Pakistan is set to transform its telecommunications infrastructure, making strides toward a faster and more reliable internet connection.
2Africa: A Game-Changing Cable System
The 2Africa Submarine Cable, one of the largest cable systems in the world, spans an impressive 45,000 kilometers. It connects 46 locations across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, promising unmatched internet capacity and speed. Powered by advanced SDM1 technology, the cable offers a remarkable 180Tbps capacity.
A consortium of eight global partners, including Meta and Vodafone, supports this ambitious project. However,For Pakistan, Transworld Associates serves as the landing partner, playing a pivotal role in bringing this advanced technology to the country. The cable is expected to go live in Pakistan by the fourth quarter of 2025, revolutionizing internet connectivity nationwide.
Project Timeline and Key Milestones
The project is divided into two phases, with Phase 1 already underway. On December 1, 2024, the Pre-Lay Shore End (PLSE) installation commenced at Hawksbay, Karachi, marking a significant step toward improved connectivity.
Phase 2, which involves laying the deep-sea segment of the cable, is scheduled to begin on April 1, 2025. Once completed, this system will significantly enhance Pakistan’s international telecommunications capabilities, strengthening its position in the global digital network.
Addressing Past Connectivity Challenges
This announcement comes after months of connectivity issues caused by a faulty submarine cable. In August 2024, internet speeds across Pakistan slowed, prompting widespread criticism from both the public and lawmakers.
Subsequent delays in repairs frustrated users, with the Islamabad High Court summoning officials to address the matter. However, the need for a more reliable system became evident, paving the way for the 2Africa cable’s introduction.
Impact on Pakistan’s Digital Future
The 2Africa cable system represents a significant investment in Pakistan’s digital future. By improving the country’s telecommunications infrastructure, it will enhance connectivity, support faster internet speeds, and enable smoother international communication.
This development aligns with Pakistan’s goals to strengthen its digital economy and meet growing demands for data usage.
