Recent data from Sindh’s provincial polio task force revealed that 98% of polio vaccine refusal cases in the province come from Karachi. This alarming trend has raised concerns ahead of the upcoming anti-polio campaign scheduled from February 3 to 9, 2025. The campaign aims to address these refusals and bolster vaccination efforts in high-risk areas.

Polio Refusals Concentrated in Urban Areas

During a meeting chaired by Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, officials identified Karachi, Hyderabad, and Larkana as high-risk areas for polio outbreaks. However, Karachi remains the epicenter, with the majority of vaccine refusals reported in the city. Slum areas in Karachi account for nearly 50% of these refusal cases, indicating significant challenges in reaching vulnerable communities.

CM Shah expressed deep concern over the rising number of refusals, particularly in urban settings. He emphasized the critical need to address vaccine hesitancy and ensure all children receive immunization against the debilitating disease.

Call for Stronger Measures

The Chief Minister called the refusal of polio vaccines unacceptable and urged health officials to intensify efforts in areas with high refusal rates. He directed the task force to take strict action against misinformation or false reporting of vaccination coverage, which undermines eradication efforts.

He also stressed the importance of educating communities about the safety and necessity of the polio vaccine. “We cannot allow any child to remain unvaccinated. Every child deserves protection,” he said during the meeting.

Progress in Other Districts

Despite challenges in Karachi, the task force reported success in eliminating the polio virus from Sindh’s Tharparkar and Matiari districts. This achievement highlights the potential for effective campaigns when communities are engaged, and health initiatives are implemented consistently.

Focus on High-Risk Areas

Officials emphasized the importance of targeting high-risk union councils in Karachi, Hyderabad, and Larkana during the February campaign. Strategies will include door-to-door vaccinations, enhanced public awareness campaigns, and strict monitoring to ensure no child is left out.

The government also plans to involve local leaders and influencers to address vaccine hesitancy and counter myths surrounding immunization.

The Path Forward

As Sindh prepares for its anti-polio drive, the focus remains on overcoming vaccine refusals in Karachi, particularly in underserved communities. The success of the campaign will depend on collaboration between government agencies, healthcare workers, and local communities.

Eradicating polio from the province requires a unified effort to ensure every child receives the vaccine. With strict measures, improved outreach, and sustained awareness campaigns, Sindh can move closer to its goal of becoming polio-free.
