The Syrian government has officially ended its military operation against loyalists of former leader Bashar al-Assad, marking a significant shift in the country’s security landscape. The Ministry of Defence announced that the situation in Latakia and Tartous, once strongholds of al-Assad’s regime, has been brought under control.
Ministry spokesperson Hassan Abdul Ghani confirmed the operation’s conclusion on Monday. He stated that security threats had been neutralized, ensuring government forces now hold control over the critical coastal provinces. The offensive led to heavy casualties, with thousands, including civilians, reportedly killed during days of intense fighting.
Military Success and Rising Casualties
Ghani explained that the military had successfully repelled attacks from al-Assad loyalists and removed them from strategic locations. He described the operation as a necessary step to stabilize the region.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that nearly 1,500 people have died since the conflict escalated last Thursday. A large portion of the casualties were civilians caught in crossfire between security forces and pro-Assad militias. The conflict unfolded in the heartland of the Alawite minority, to which the ousted president belonged. However, independent sources have yet to verify the exact number of deaths.
New Leadership Promises Accountability
As the violence subsides, Syria’s interim leader, President Ahmed al-Sharaa, has pledged to hold those responsible for the clashes accountable. On Sunday, he vowed to hunt down the instigators of the violence and prevent further unrest.
Al-Sharaa’s administration announced the formation of an independent investigative committee to examine the killings committed by both sides.

Impact on Syria’s Future
The end of this military operation marks a turning point in Syria’s transition under new leadership. However, deep divisions remain between government forces and former regime supporters. Observers warn that long-term stability will depend on effective governance, security measures, and reconciliation efforts.
As Syria moves forward, the focus now shifts to rebuilding war-torn regions and ensuring peace after years of internal conflict.
