Gaza Famine Crisis Intensifies as Israel Pounds Gaza City

Gaza Famine Crisis has become the focus of global concern as Israeli forces continue heavy bombardment of Gaza City. International leaders warn of starvation, while the World Health Organization calls the health situation catastrophic. Meanwhile, Israel prepares for a full takeover of the city, deepening fears for civilians trapped under fire.
Escalating Air Strikes
The Hamas-run civil defence agency reported that Israeli air strikes have pounded residential areas in Zeitoun and Sabra for three consecutive days. Officials said the attacks caused massive destruction to civilian homes, with rescuers unable to reach the dead and injured.
Mahmud Bassal, a civil defence spokesman, described the devastation as relentless. “People can’t retrieve the bodies. The shelling hasn’t stopped,” he said.
Residents confirmed the intensity. Majed al-Hosary from Zeitoun said the bombardment shook the ground with every strike. Amr Salah, 25, described tanks firing at houses and planes launching multiple missiles in quick succession.
Global Demands for Action
The UK, EU, Australia, Canada, and Japan issued a joint statement urging urgent measures to prevent famine. They said starvation was “unfolding in front of our eyes” and demanded immediate steps to allow aid into Gaza.
The statement also called for an end to lethal force near aid distribution points and lorry convoys, where the UN reports over 1,300 Palestinians have been killed, mostly by Israeli fire.
Israel rejects the famine claims, accusing UN agencies of failing to collect and distribute aid from border points.
WHO Warns of Health Collapse
The World Health Organization urged Israel to allow stockpiling of medical supplies before the planned ground assault. WHO representative Rik Peeperkorn said the flow of humanitarian goods was far too slow. “We want to quickly supply hospitals,” he said. “Right now, we can’t. We need essential medicines and equipment inside Gaza immediately.”

Israeli Offensive Plans
Israel’s war cabinet voted to take control of Gaza City. The Israel Defense Forces announced they were “at the beginning of a new state of combat.” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the army had orders to dismantle the two remaining Hamas strongholds in Gaza City and in al-Mawasi.
Netanyahu outlined a plan to boost aid deliveries, including designated safe corridors and increased air drops. On the ground, however, civilians reported no sign of relief from air strikes.
Mounting Civilian Toll
The Hamas-run health ministry reported 100 deaths in the past 24 hours, including 31 people killed at aid sites. Five others died of malnutrition. The 22-month war has left more than 61,000 Palestinians dead, according to the ministry figures considered credible by the UN.
International experts, including the group known as “The Elders,” for the first time labelled the war an “unfolding genocide” and accused Israel of causing famine. Former leaders Helen Clark and Mary Robinson said their visit to the Gaza border reinforced their belief in the severity of the crisis.
Targeting of Journalists
Israel’s military drew further condemnation after killing four Al Jazeera journalists in a targeted strike on a media tent. Two freelance journalists also died in the attack. The IDF claimed one victim, Anas al-Sharif, was a Hamas operative, but provided no evidence regarding the others.
Al Jazeera accused Israel of trying to silence reporting from Gaza. Media watchdogs demanded proof for the military’s allegations.
Deepening Divides
Leading Israeli rights group B’Tselem has echoed the genocide accusation, stating that Israel aims to “destroy Palestinian society in the Gaza Strip.” Israel insists it targets only militants and blames Hamas for civilian suffering.
Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack on Israel killed more than 1,200 people and took 251 hostage. Israel’s retaliatory campaign has devastated Gaza, displacing much of the population and crippling basic services.
Humanitarian Fears Grow
As bombardment intensifies and aid remains restricted, the Gaza famine crisis is worsening. UN agencies warn that without immediate and sustained access for humanitarian convoys, starvation will claim more lives. The combination of relentless military action, blocked aid, and collapsing health systems leaves Gaza’s civilians in a perilous state — with no clear end in sight.
