The Indian High Commission has formally informed Pakistan about the high-level flood in the Sutlej River, according to the Ministry of Water Resources. Officials confirmed that heavy water inflows are expected to reach Pakistan from today, raising the risk of flooding in several districts. Authorities have issued alerts to provincial governments and relevant institutions to prepare for potential emergencies.
PDMA Issues Flood Alert
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a flood alert for areas located near the Sutlej River. Officials directed local administrations to ensure timely evacuation from vulnerable locations and to keep rescue equipment ready. The PDMA emphasized that communities living near the riverbanks should move to safer areas immediately to avoid loss of life.
Emergency centers in flood-prone districts have been put on high alert. Provincial authorities assured that food, clean water, and medical supplies will be provided to displaced families.

Worsening Situation in Punjab Rivers
Flood concerns are not limited to the Sutlej. Rising water levels in the Chenab River have already caused devastation, with at least 251 villages submerged. Deputy Commissioner Ali Akbar Bhandar reported that the floodwater flow at the Trimmu Headworks has crossed 0.5 million cusecs. Rescue teams are actively evacuating stranded families while ensuring that food and fodder are delivered to both residents and their livestock.
Authorities warned that if inflows continue, more villages downstream may face inundation in the coming hours.
PDMA Sindh Dispatches Relief Supplies
As Punjab struggles with surging rivers, Sindh is also bracing for possible flooding. The PDMA Sindh announced that relief supplies have been dispatched to Sukkur, Larkana, and Shikarpur. Additional consignments are being prepared for Naushahro Feroze, Ghotki, and Kashmore.

The aid packages include tents, rations, and medical kits. Officials said they were taking proactive measures to minimize losses in case of high-level flooding in the Indus basin.
Schools Closed Due to Floods
The ongoing floods have also disrupted the education sector. Summer vacations in multiple Punjab districts have been extended due to the worsening situation. A notification was issued for 18 schools in Jhelum district, extending their closure until September 8.
In Vihari district, schools reopened as scheduled, but 60 institutions located in flood-affected areas were ordered to remain closed until further notice. Education authorities said the safety of students and staff is their top priority.
Villagers Evacuated, Relief Efforts Continue
Local administrations, supported by rescue teams, are evacuating people from vulnerable areas along the Sutlej and Chenab rivers. Relief camps have been established to shelter displaced families. Authorities are also ensuring the supply of clean drinking water and food at these camps.
Farmers in affected districts expressed concern about crop damage as floodwaters continue to spread. With cotton and rice fields inundated, officials fear significant agricultural losses. Livestock owners are also struggling to protect their animals, with many relocating herds to higher ground.
A Growing Crisis
Experts warn that Pakistan may face prolonged flooding due to continuous inflows from India and seasonal monsoon rains. They stressed the need for coordinated efforts between federal and provincial agencies to manage the crisis.
The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) is closely monitoring water flows at barrages and headworks. Officials assured the public that timely updates will be shared as the situation develops.
