ISLAMABAD – Internet users across Pakistan are facing disruptions after submarine cable cuts in Saudi waters near Jeddah impacted international bandwidth capacity. The Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) confirmed the development in an official statement on Saturday.

Bandwidth Capacity Reduced on Key Systems

PTCL stated that the cuts have partially affected bandwidth on two major international systems: the South East Asia–Middle East–Western Europe-4 (SMW4) and the India-Middle East-Western Europe (IMEWE) cable. Both systems are vital routes for global internet traffic, connecting Pakistan with international hubs.

The company warned that the damage could cause slower internet speeds and service degradation in Pakistan, especially during peak evening hours when demand surges.

International Partners Begin Repairs

A PTCL spokesperson said that international partners are already working on priority to repair the affected section of the undersea cables. Repairing submarine cables is a complex process that requires specialized vessels and favorable sea conditions, which can take several days.

“We are in close coordination with our global partners, who are carrying out the necessary repairs. This is being treated as a top priority,” the spokesperson confirmed.

Local Teams Arranging Alternatives

In the meantime, PTCL’s local teams are actively arranging alternative bandwidth to reduce the impact on Pakistani users. Internet traffic is being rerouted through other available systems to keep essential services and communications operational.

“Our technical staff is working around the clock to manage the situation and ensure stability in connectivity,” the PTCL spokesperson added.

Users Advised to Expect Service Degradation

Internet users across Pakistan may notice slower browsing, delays in streaming, and difficulties with video calls until the issue is resolved. However, PTCL assured customers that mitigation efforts are underway to minimize the disruption.

“We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding during this time. Our teams are committed to restoring services as soon as possible,” the spokesperson said.

Submarine Cables: A Lifeline for Connectivity

This incident once again highlights Pakistan’s dependence on submarine cable networks for global internet access. Any damage in international waters often has a direct effect on connectivity in the country.

In the past, similar cable cuts have temporarily slowed down internet services across South Asia and the Middle East. Experts say such events underscore the importance of diversifying bandwidth routes and investing in new undersea cable systems.
