Trump Files $15 Billion Defamation Lawsuit Against The New York Times

President Takes Legal Aim at Major Newspaper

President Donald Trump has filed a $15 billion defamation lawsuit against The New York Times, escalating his long-running battle with mainstream media outlets. Court documents filed Monday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida accuse the newspaper and four of its journalists of intentionally and maliciously defaming Trump through a series of articles and a book published in the run-up to the 2024 election.

According to the filing, the disputed publications were “part of a decades-long pattern by The New York Times of intentional and malicious defamation against President Trump.” The lawsuit claims the journalists published false statements negligently or with “reckless disregard” for the truth.

Lawsuit Targets Articles and a Book

The legal complaint highlights several pieces written by two journalists at the paper and one book attributed to them. Trump’s lawyers allege these works contained “false and defamatory” claims designed to harm his reputation and political prospects. While the lawsuit does not detail each article in the publicly available portion of the filing, it describes an alleged coordinated effort to damage the president’s credibility ahead of the 2024 election.

The lawsuit also asserts that The New York Times acted with “actual malice,” a high legal standard required for public figures to prove defamation in U.S. courts. By framing the case as part of a broader “pattern” of conduct, Trump’s legal team hopes to strengthen the argument that the newspaper deliberately spread falsehoods about him.

Trump Accuses The New York Times of Bias

Trump announced the lawsuit Monday night on his social media platform, Truth Social. In his post, he accused The New York Times of operating as “a virtual ‘mouthpiece’ for the Radical Left Democrat Party” and said the publication had lied about him for years. He framed the lawsuit as a step toward accountability and as part of his broader pushback against what he calls “fake news.”

Trump Files $15 Billion Defamation Lawsuit Against The New York Times

The New York Times did not immediately respond to a request for comment early Tuesday, but the newspaper has historically defended its reporting on Trump as accurate and newsworthy. Media-law experts note that the Times, like other outlets, has successfully fended off previous defamation claims from public figures due to First Amendment protections.

Pattern of Legal Battles Against Media Outlets

This lawsuit is not Trump’s first high-stakes legal challenge against a major news organization. In July 2025, he filed a $10 billion defamation lawsuit against The Wall Street Journal and its owner, Rupert Murdoch, over a story detailing his alleged ties to wealthy financier Jeffrey Epstein. That case is still pending in federal court.

Trump has also sued CNN, the Washington Post, and other outlets over the years. Most of those cases have been dismissed or remain unresolved. Legal analysts say defamation suits from public figures rarely succeed because plaintiffs must prove that journalists knowingly published false information or acted with reckless disregard for the truth.

The U.S. District Court in Florida will first determine whether the case meets basic procedural requirements before moving forward. The New York Times is expected to file a motion to dismiss, as it has in previous cases. If the lawsuit survives that challenge, discovery could force the newspaper to turn over internal communications about its reporting on Trump, a process that could take months or even years.

While the lawsuit may energize Trump’s supporters, it also risks drawing renewed attention to the allegations raised in the articles and book at the heart of the dispute. Legal experts caution that the $15 billion figure appears largely symbolic; even if Trump were to win, damages would almost certainly be far lower.
