Stefon Diggs hasn’t posted eye-catching numbers through the first two weeks of the NFL season, but the veteran wideout is already making a significant impact on the New England Patriots. While the box scores show a limited number of receptions, coaches and players say Diggs’ leadership has transformed the team’s young receiving corps.
Mentoring Young Quarterback Drake Maye
On WBZ-TV’s “Patriots 1st Down,” Dan Roche and ESPN’s Mike Reiss highlighted how Diggs has become a steady presence for rookie quarterback Drake Maye. They noted that the former Buffalo Bills star spends extra time after practice running routes, explaining coverage schemes, and offering tips to Maye and younger receivers.
“Diggs may not have the stats yet, but you can see how much calmer Maye looks with him on the field,” Reiss said during the segment. “He’s helping his quarterback grow up fast.”
Changing the Culture in the Receiver Room
Patriots insiders say Diggs has raised the standard in team meetings and on the practice field. He regularly meets with offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt and receivers coach Troy Brown to help refine game plans. Younger receivers such as DeMario Douglas and Kayshon Boutte have reportedly gravitated toward Diggs for advice on route running and film study.

Dan Roche pointed out that this leadership was one of the main reasons head coach Jerod Mayo and personnel chief Eliot Wolf traded for Diggs in the offseason. “They wanted a proven playmaker who could also show the younger guys how to prepare like pros,” Roche said.
Looking Ahead to a Breakout Game
While Diggs’ statistics are modest so far, Patriots coaches believe his production will increase as Maye grows more comfortable in the offense. Opposing defenses continue to double-team Diggs, which has opened up opportunities for other receivers.
Fans and analysts expect the veteran to break out soon. “It’s only a matter of time before the numbers come,” Reiss predicted. “But even without them, he’s been invaluable.”
A New Chapter for Diggs
After years as one of the NFL’s top targets in Buffalo, Diggs is embracing a different role in New England. He has publicly said he wants to win and help build a sustainable culture around a young quarterback.
For the Patriots, who are trying to re-establish themselves as playoff contenders under new leadership, Diggs’ presence is proving to be about more than just catches and yards. It’s about setting a tone for the future.
