Two Killed, Eight Injured in Attack on Saudi Arabia’s King Fahd International Airport

Two people were killed and eight others injured in an attack on King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, eastern Saudi Arabia, the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) confirmed on Thursday. The victims were a Saudi citizen and an Indian national. The injured included nationals from Saudi Arabia, India, Yemen, Bangladesh and Nepal.

The incident occurred late Wednesday, October 21, prompting an emergency response and an assessment of damage to airport facilities. Authorities transported the injured to hospitals for treatment, with their conditions ranging from minor to severe.

GACA later confirmed that airport operations had resumed and air traffic had returned to normal. The authority said it was coordinating with security agencies to assess the damage and implement measures to protect passengers, airport employees and the kingdom’s civil aviation infrastructure.

Shaybah Oil Field Incident Kills Two

The airport attack came amid a separate incident at Saudi Aramco’s Shaybah oil field in the Eastern Province. Saudi Arabia’s Energy Ministry said two people were killed and two others injured after air defences intercepted a drone targeting a processing facility.

Falling debris ignited a fire in a contractor’s vehicle outside the facility’s perimeter, but oil field operations remained unaffected, according to the ministry.

The incidents raised fresh concerns about the security of Saudi Arabia’s critical infrastructure, including airports and energy facilities.

Drone Interceptions Raise Security Concerns

The Saudi-led coalition also reported intercepting and destroying drones directed towards the kingdom, including in the Eastern Province and the Medina region.

King Fahd International Airport had previously come under attack on October 11, leading authorities to assess damage and conduct safety inspections.

The latest incidents occurred amid escalating hostilities involving Yemen’s Houthi movement and the Saudi-led coalition. The attacks have heightened concerns about the security of civilian infrastructure and the potential consequences for regional stability.

Saudi authorities have not publicly identified the perpetrator of the Dammam airport attack in the statements cited in the initial reports.
