Florida Learjet Crash Kills All Nine Aboard as Jet Crashes Into Residential Area

All nine people aboard a Learjet 60 were killed after the aircraft crashed into a residential area in Florida’s Palm Beach County on Sunday, triggering a major emergency response and forcing hundreds of residents to prepare for temporary evacuation.

US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that nobody aboard the Learjet 60 survived the devastating accident. The aircraft went down near Cresthaven at approximately 12:50 pm local time, leaving a large crater beside a road and scattering debris across the surrounding neighbourhood.

“All 9 people on board were killed,” Duffy announced in a post on X, describing the incident as a “horrific tragedy.”

He said the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was sending personnel to assist the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which will lead the investigation into the disaster.

The aircraft departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was heading towards North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas when it crashed.

According to the FAA, the accident occurred near Military Trail, between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North.

Television footage from the scene showed flames, thick black smoke and aircraft debris scattered along the roadside and nearby residential properties.

Although all nine occupants died, officials had not released their identities or confirmed how many were passengers and crew members by Sunday evening.

Authorities also had not established what caused the aircraft to lose control and crash.

Florida Governor Describes Crash Impact as Cataclysmic

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis visited the accident site and described the destruction as “cataclysmic.”

Speaking to reporters, he said the aircraft appeared to be falling like a missile before striking the ground.

“It looked like a missile going down. It left a big crater on the side of the road,” DeSantis said.

The governor added that authorities had received no reports of deaths or injuries among people on the ground at the time of his briefing.

He also highlighted the extensive debris field and praised emergency responders for their swift action.

Hundreds of Residents Face Temporary Displacement

The accident created additional concerns for residents living near the crash location as emergency crews secured the area and investigators prepared to examine the wreckage.

Palm Beach County officials estimated that approximately 600 residents could require temporary accommodation while authorities carried out emergency operations.

County Commissioner Joel Flores said two shelters were on standby to assist affected families.

Officials also prepared county transit vehicles to transport residents if necessary, while the American Red Cross remained available to provide emergency assistance.

Authorities warned that restrictions around the crash location could remain in place beyond Sunday as investigators continued their work.

NTSB Launches Investigation Into Deadly Aircraft Accident

The National Transportation Safety Board confirmed that it was deploying an investigative team to Florida. Investigators were expected to arrive on Sunday and Monday, with a media briefing scheduled in West Palm Beach on Monday.

The investigation will examine the aircraft’s wreckage, flight records, weather conditions and other evidence to determine what led to the fatal accident.

CNN, citing air traffic control recordings, reported that the pilots had mentioned icing, turbulence and precipitation shortly before the aircraft entered a steep descent.

However, investigators have not confirmed whether weather conditions contributed to the crash.

Aviation authorities typically examine several possible factors, including mechanical performance, pilot actions, weather conditions and aircraft maintenance history before determining the probable cause of an accident.

What Is the Learjet 60?

The Learjet 60 is a twin-engine business aircraft manufactured by Bombardier. It is designed for private and corporate travel.

The aircraft involved in Sunday’s accident carried the registration number N722BD, according to aviation records cited by local media.

However, the aircraft’s registered ownership does not necessarily establish which company or individual operated the flight.

The NTSB will lead the investigation in coordination with the FAA. While preliminary findings may establish important details about the accident, determining its actual cause could take considerably longer.
