Myanmar Earthquake Death Toll Surges as Rescuers Pull Survivor from Rubble

A devastating earthquake in Myanmar has claimed over 2,880 lives, leaving thousands injured and homeless. On Wednesday, rescue teams in Mandalay pulled a survivor from the debris five days after the disaster. Despite ongoing search efforts, hopes of finding more survivors are fading. Meanwhile, aid groups and international organizations urge the government to prioritize relief efforts over military operations.

Rescue Efforts Continue Amid Destruction

The 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck on March 28, flattening buildings and infrastructure across central Myanmar. According to state-run MRTV, 2,886 people have died, 4,639 are injured, and 373 remain missing.

Rescue workers, including a joint Myanmar-Turkish team, successfully saved a 26-year-old hotel worker trapped under rubble in Naypyidaw. A video shared by Myanmar’s Fire Services Department showed the man conscious but dazed as he was carried out on a stretcher.

Widespread Devastation and Aid Shortages

Entire towns, including Sagaing, suffered severe damage. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that one in three houses collapsed in some areas. Healthcare facilities, already weakened by conflict, struggle to treat the large influx of injured people. Supplies of food, water, and medicine are running dangerously low.

Civil War Complicates Relief Operations

Myanmar’s ongoing civil conflict is hindering relief efforts. Despite the humanitarian crisis, junta chief Min Aung Hlaing announced that military operations will continue. In contrast, some ethnic armed groups and People’s Defense Forces have declared a temporary ceasefire to assist with earthquake recovery.

The United Nations and human rights organizations have urged all parties to pause hostilities and focus on humanitarian aid. UN special envoy Julie Bishop emphasized the need to protect civilians and aid workers.

Aid Convoy Faces Military Blockade

Tensions escalated when Myanmar’s military fired warning shots at a Chinese Red Cross aid convoy. The junta claimed the convoy entered a conflict zone without clearance. However, China urged Myanmar to ensure the safety of relief workers and keep aid routes open.

Many affected regions, particularly in Sagaing, remain difficult to access. Armed resistance groups control some areas, and the junta’s internet and phone blackouts have made communication challenging.

Global Condemnation of Military Actions

International organizations and governments condemned the junta’s continued military attacks. Amnesty International called Myanmar’s actions inhumane, stating, “You cannot ask for aid with one hand and bomb with the other.”

Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong also criticized the airstrikes, demanding that Myanmar’s military immediately cease operations and allow unrestricted humanitarian aid.

Thailand’s Death Toll Rises

The earthquake’s impact extended beyond Myanmar. In Bangkok, Thailand, a 30-story building under construction collapsed, trapping workers inside. The death toll there has reached 22, with over 70 people still missing as search efforts continue.

As the crisis unfolds, Myanmar’s people remain in urgent need of aid and relief, while the world watches how the government responds to the disaster.

Over 100 Injured in Eid ul Fitr Traffic Accidents Across Punjab

Traffic accidents left more than 100 people injured during Eid ul Fitr celebrations in Punjab’s Taunsa district, rescue officials reported. The majority of accidents involved motorcycles and rickshaws, with reckless driving and overspeeding cited as major causes.

Surge in Motorcycle and Rickshaw Accidents

At least 112 injured victims were rushed to Tehsil Headquarters Hospital. However, as the hospital ran out of space, several patients had to be taken to private medical facilities, officials confirmed.

A significant number of victims were young riders who lost control of their motorcycles while performing stunts or racing. Eid celebrations often see a rise in such risky behavior, leading to avoidable injuries and fatalities.

Fatal Crash in Tando Allahyar

Tragedy struck in Tando Allahyar Canal, where a high-speed car accident claimed the lives of four young men. The victims, identified as Ali Shan, Abdul Ahad, Adeel, and Sameer, were all friends from Karachi. Their bodies were transported back to the city, rescue teams confirmed.

Karachi Sees Alarming Rise in Road Accidents

Traffic accidents are becoming increasingly frequent and deadly in Karachi. Just last week, a speeding water tanker claimed the lives of a young couple and their unborn child near Malir Halt. The victims, Abdul Qayyum, 26, and his pregnant wife Zainab, 24, were on their way to a hospital when they were struck.

The city has witnessed a sharp rise in fatal accidents, with at least 214 people killed in road crashes in the past three months. Among these, 68 deaths were caused by heavy vehicles like tankers and trailers.

Calls for Stricter Traffic Regulations

With the increasing number of Eid-related accidents, authorities are under pressure to enforce stricter road safety measures. Reckless driving, lack of helmet use, and overspeeding by young riders remain serious concerns.

Citizens and safety advocates are urging the government to implement tougher traffic laws, launch awareness campaigns, and improve emergency response systems to prevent further tragedies.

Israeli Airstrike Kills Four, Including Hezbollah Official in Beirut

An Israeli airstrike in Beirut’s southern suburbs killed four people, including a senior Hezbollah figure, escalating tensions in the region. Israel identified the target as Hassan Bdeir, a Hezbollah operative linked to Iran’s Quds Force. Officials accused him of assisting Hamas in planning an imminent attack on Israeli civilians.

Targeted Attack in Beirut

The airstrike took place early Tuesday, striking the upper floors of a residential building. Lebanese security sources confirmed that Bdeir was responsible for handling Hezbollah’s Palestinian affairs. The Lebanese health ministry reported that the attack killed four people, including a woman, and injured seven others.

This marks Israel’s second airstrike in Hezbollah-controlled Beirut within five days. The attack further strains an already fragile US-brokered ceasefire, which ended last year’s war between Hezbollah and Israel.

Hezbollah and Lebanon Respond

Hezbollah lawmakers condemned the attack, calling it a serious escalation. Ibrahim Moussawi, a Hezbollah official, urged the Lebanese government to use diplomatic channels to de-escalate tensions.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun called the strike a “dangerous provocation”, warning that it could lead to wider conflict. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam labeled it a violation of a UN Security Council resolution, which forms the basis of the ceasefire agreement.

Read: Myanmar Earthquake: Aftershocks Spread Fear as Rescue Efforts Intensify

Israel Justifies the Strike

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar defended the attack, calling Bdeir a “real and immediate threat.” He urged Lebanon to take action against terrorist groups operating within its borders.

Israel also accused Hezbollah of maintaining military infrastructure in southern Lebanon, violating the ceasefire terms. Lebanese officials, in turn, argue that Israel has not withdrawn from five strategic positions, prolonging tensions.

U.S. Backs Israel

The U.S. State Department placed blame on Hezbollah, stating that hostilities resumed after rockets were fired from Lebanon. A spokesperson said, “Terrorists launched rockets into Israel from Lebanon, and Israel has the right to defend itself.” Washington has continued to support Israel’s military actions against Hezbollah.

Growing Regional Escalation

The attack comes amid a broader regional crisis, as:

  • Israel resumed strikes on Gaza, ending a two-month truce.

  • The U.S. launched airstrikes on Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis, aiming to stop their attacks on Red Sea shipping.

  • Hezbollah denied involvement in recent rocket attacks on Israel, but tensions remain high.

Ongoing Conflict and Casualties

The Israel-Hezbollah conflict intensified in September, when Israel launched military operations in response to Hezbollah’s support for Hamas. Since then:

  • 3,768 people have died in Lebanon due to Israeli airstrikes.

  • Over a million Lebanese have been displaced.

  • Hezbollah attacks have killed 45 civilians in northern Israel and the Golan Heights.

  • Israel lost 73 soldiers in fighting along the Lebanese border and in the Golan Heights.

With hostilities rising, diplomatic efforts will be crucial in preventing further escalation in the Middle East.

Mark Chapman Ruled Out of Second ODI Against Pakistan

New Zealand batter Mark Chapman has been ruled out of the second ODI against Pakistan after suffering a hamstring injury. The left-handed batter, who played a crucial role in the first ODI with a century, sustained the injury while fielding. Subsequent scans confirmed a grade-one tear, forcing him to miss the match scheduled for Wednesday at Seddon Park, Hamilton.

Injury Forces Chapman Out

Chapman played a match-winning knock in the first ODI, scoring 132 runs and rebuilding the innings alongside Daryl Mitchell. However, during Pakistan’s chase, he injured his hamstring while fielding. The injury required immediate medical attention, and scans later confirmed a minor tear.

Despite the setback, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) remains optimistic about his recovery. Chapman will undergo rehabilitation in Auckland, with hopes of returning for the third ODI on Saturday.

Tim Seifert Named Replacement

With Chapman sidelined, New Zealand has brought in Tim Seifert as a replacement. Seifert has been in top form, delivering impressive performances in the recent five-match T20I series against Pakistan, where he scored 249 runs at an average of 62. His inclusion strengthens the team’s batting lineup, providing an aggressive top-order option.

New Zealand Coach Reacts

New Zealand head coach Gary Stead expressed disappointment over Chapman’s injury but was relieved that it was not severe.

“It’s obviously disappointing for Mark, especially after his fantastic innings in Napier,” Stead said. “Thankfully, the injury is minor, and we are hopeful he will recover in time for the final match of the series.”

Israeli Forces Kill Red Crescent Medics in Gaza

Israeli forces attacked and killed Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) medics in Gaza, targeting rescue workers who were trying to save lives. The assault left nine medics dead, while one remains missing. Their bodies, along with their vehicles, were later found buried after a week of Israeli obstruction.

Attack on Ambulances in Rafah

On March 23, an ambulance was dispatched to al-Hashaashin, Rafah, to assist civilians wounded in Israeli attacks. As the vehicle approached, Israeli forces opened fire, injuring the crew inside.

In response, the PRCS sent three more ambulances to rescue the wounded and retrieve their colleagues. These emergency teams operated in broad daylight, following standard humanitarian protocols. However, contact was soon lost with all the dispatched medics, raising alarms within the organization.

A Week of Obstruction

For days, Israeli forces blocked access to the area where the medics had disappeared. Humanitarian organizations and local officials tried repeatedly to locate the missing first responders, but Israeli authorities prevented international teams from entering the site.

After a week of delay, search teams were finally allowed into the area. What they uncovered was shocking evidence of a direct attack on humanitarian workers. The medics’ bodies and their ambulances were found buried, suggesting an attempt to cover up the assault.

Targeting Humanitarian Workers

This attack is part of a broader pattern of Israeli strikes on medical and emergency response teams in Gaza. PRCS officials and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) have condemned the killings, calling them a blatant violation of international humanitarian law.

IFRC spokesperson Tommaso Della Longa confirmed that the PRCS teams were carrying out their life-saving mission when they were ambushed. Despite wearing clearly marked uniforms and operating in designated rescue vehicles, they were targeted and killed.

Growing Humanitarian Crisis

The deaths of these medics further worsen the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where Israeli airstrikes and ground operations have already left thousands of civilians dead and injured. Emergency responders play a crucial role in helping the wounded, yet they are being deliberately attacked.

The international community has demanded accountability, but Israeli forces continue their attacks on medical personnel, making it even more dangerous for humanitarian teams to operate in the besieged territory.

Calls for Justice

Human rights organizations and humanitarian groups have urged an independent investigation into the attack on PRCS medics. The killing of rescue workers violates the Geneva Conventions, which protect medical personnel in conflict zones.

Despite widespread condemnation, Israel has not acknowledged responsibility for the attack. The families of the slain medics, along with international organizations, continue to seek justice for the victims and demand an end to the targeting of humanitarian workers in Gaza.

Afghan Taliban Urge Pakistan to Delay Refugee Deportation

The Afghan Taliban government has urged Pakistan to delay the deportation of Afghan refugees as the deadline for Afghan Citizenship Card (ACC) holders expired on March 31. The Afghan authorities expressed concern over the forced repatriation of thousands of Afghans, emphasizing the need for a humane approach and voluntary return.

Pakistan’s Deadline for Afghan Refugees

Pakistan’s Interior Ministry had announced that all illegal foreigners and ACC holders must leave voluntarily before March 31, 2025. After the deadline, authorities would begin deportation from April 1. Following this decision, strict legal actions were expected against those who remained in the country without proper documentation.

Pakistan currently hosts around 1.52 million registered Afghan refugees and 800,000 Afghan citizens with legal residence permits. Additionally, there are thousands of undocumented Afghans living in the country without formal recognition.

Afghan Government’s Concerns

Afghanistan’s Minister of Refugees and Repatriation, Mawlavi Abdul Kabir, called on neighboring countries, including Pakistan and Iran, to halt planned deportations. He stressed that Afghans should be allowed to return home voluntarily rather than face forced expulsion.

The Afghan government also raised concerns about reports of mistreatment of refugees at border crossings. There have been instances where even individuals with legal visas were deported, causing distress among Afghan nationals.

Recommendations to Delay Repatriation

Officials in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) have suggested postponing the repatriation process until April 10 due to Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations. A recent meeting of the Provincial Steering Committee on Illegal Foreigners’ Repatriation discussed the challenges of immediate deportation. Participants unanimously recommended delaying the process to ensure a smoother transition for affected individuals.

Despite these recommendations, the Interior Ministry has not confirmed whether it will approve the extension. Refugee camps in Landi Kotal, established to facilitate repatriation, remained closed as of Tuesday, with no visible movement of refugees.

Funding Challenges for Repatriation

The KP government has requested financial assistance from the federal government to manage the repatriation process effectively. However, no confirmation has been given on whether the necessary funds will be allocated. The home department is expected to submit a formal request to the KP chief minister for clarity on the financial aspects of repatriation.

Afghan Officials Seek More Time

Afghanistan’s Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi recently met Pakistan’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Mohammad Sadiq, in Kabul. He urged Pakistan to reconsider the timeline for deportation, stating that the sudden repatriation of thousands of Afghans could create severe difficulties for the Afghan government.

Ongoing Repatriation Under IFRP

Pakistan launched the Illegal Foreigners Repatriation Program (IFRP) in November 2023. Since then, over 700,000 undocumented Afghans have already left the country. The latest decision extends the policy to ACC holders, making their deportation a priority.

The situation remains uncertain as Afghan authorities continue to press for an extension, while Pakistan moves forward with its repatriation plan. The coming days will determine whether deportations proceed as scheduled or if further delays are granted.

Gold Prices Reach Record High Amid Market Uncertainty

Gold prices have surged to an all-time high, reaching $3,127.88 per ounce. Investors are turning to the precious metal as economic uncertainties and trade policies fuel market volatility. Since the start of 2025, gold has gained nearly 19%, continuing its upward trend from 2024, when it saw a 27% increase.

Steady Growth in Gold Value

Gold started 2025 at $2,620 per ounce and has added over $506 in value. Since January 20, when US President Donald Trump assumed office, the metal has climbed 15%. Analysts attribute this rise to global economic concerns and shifting trade dynamics.

Historically, gold prices increase during times of financial instability. As markets react to changing policies, investors seek safe-haven assets to protect their wealth. The latest surge indicates growing investor confidence in gold as a hedge against economic uncertainty.

Impact of US Trade Policies

The rise in gold prices follows President Trump’s announcement of new trade tariffs. Speaking aboard Air Force One, he confirmed that these tariffs would apply to all countries, not just select trading partners. This statement contradicts earlier expectations that only certain nations would face restrictions.

“You would start with all countries,” Trump said, reinforcing his tough stance on international trade.

The previous week, Trump had already imposed a 25% tariff on auto imports, escalating tensions in global markets. These moves align with his administration’s broader trade strategy, which seeks to address what he considers unfair trade practices.

Read: Gold Prices Hit Record Highs in Local and Global Markets

Investors Turn to Safe-Haven Assets

Market analysts believe that continued trade disputes and economic uncertainty are pushing investors toward gold. The metal has long been a preferred asset during turbulent times, as it retains value even when other investments decline.

With ongoing shifts in US trade policies and potential retaliatory actions from other countries, financial markets remain unpredictable. As a result, gold prices are expected to stay strong in the coming months.

Future Outlook

Experts predict that if trade tensions persist, gold could continue its upward trajectory. Many investors are closely watching policy changes and global market reactions to determine their next moves.

With uncertainty shaping global trade and economic policies, gold remains a reliable choice for those seeking stability. The recent price surge underscores its role as a key financial safeguard in uncertain times.

Sharjeel Memon Vows to Block Indus Canal Projects

Senior Sindh Minister and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Sharjeel Inam Memon has strongly opposed canal projects on the Indus River, vowing to resist them until his last breath. He called for unity to strengthen Pakistan and urged citizens to set aside their differences during Eidul Fitr.

Firm Stance Against Canal Projects

Speaking at a press conference, Memon reaffirmed the PPP’s position against constructing canals on the Indus River. He urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to announce the cancellation of these projects on April 4. According to Memon, any attempt to divert Indus water threatens Sindh’s rights and will be met with strong resistance.

He stressed that Sindh’s people rely on the Indus for their survival. Any project affecting water distribution, he argued, would create severe hardships. He warned that the PPP would not compromise on this issue and would fight for Sindh’s fair share of water.

Condemnation of Terrorism

Memon condemned recent terrorist attacks in Pakistan, particularly those targeting civilians. He praised the sacrifices of military and security forces, emphasizing the need for a united effort to protect the nation. He urged all political forces to come together against terrorism rather than allowing divisions to weaken national security.

Allegations of Foreign Influence

Sharjeel Memon criticized those he claimed were influenced by external forces working against Pakistan. He accused certain individuals of promoting narratives that align with hostile intelligence agencies. He asserted that real dialogue could only happen with those who genuinely support the country’s interests.

Defense of Media Freedom

Memon reaffirmed the PPP’s commitment to press freedom. He stated that the party had always supported journalists and opposed any efforts to restrict media rights. He criticized the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), arguing that such laws should not be used to suppress free speech or spread false information.

According to him, an independent press is essential for democracy, and any restrictions on journalists harm Pakistan’s progress. He vowed that the PPP would continue standing against unjust media regulations.

Call for Political Dialogue

Discussing national unity, Memon highlighted the need for political dialogue in Balochistan. He stressed that resolving conflicts through discussion is necessary, but he insisted that terrorists must be dealt with firmly. He called on all political stakeholders to work together for peace and stability in the country.

Commitment to Rights and Justice

Memon concluded by reiterating the PPP’s commitment to human rights, democracy, and media freedom. He assured that his party would not back down from these principles, regardless of opposition. He urged the government to take decisive action on critical national issues and ensure that justice prevails.

Earthquake Jolts Balochistan, Tremors Felt in Karachi

A 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck Balochistan on Monday, shaking several parts of the region. The tremors reached as far as Karachi, causing panic among residents. The earthquake originated 65 km east-southeast of Uthal city at a depth of 10 km, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Strong Tremors Reported

Although there were no immediate reports of casualties or structural damage, the tremors were widely felt. Many Karachi residents took to social media to describe the experience. Some reported their chairs and furniture moving, while others waited for confirmation of the quake.

One resident described how their chair rocked back and forth but noted that the shaking was not severe. Others prayed for safety, expressing concerns over potential aftershocks.

Depth and Epicenter Details

The earthquake’s shallow depth of 10 km contributed to its strong impact. Shallow earthquakes tend to cause more noticeable shaking than deeper ones. The epicenter’s location near Uthal suggests that nearby areas may have experienced more intense tremors.

Authorities are monitoring the situation and advising residents to remain cautious. Experts warn that aftershocks are possible, though no major ones have been reported yet.

Earthquake Preparedness and Safety

Seismic activity is common in this region due to its geological structure. Experts urge residents to take precautions, such as securing heavy objects, identifying safe spots indoors, and having an emergency plan.

Government agencies are assessing the impact and ensuring that response teams are ready if needed. Meanwhile, citizens are reminded to stay informed through official updates.

No Immediate Damage, But Caution Advised

While this earthquake did not cause significant harm, it serves as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to seismic events. Authorities and experts emphasize the need for preparedness to minimize risks in future quakes.

Pakistan has experienced several earthquakes in recent years, some of which have led to severe destruction. Continued monitoring and awareness can help communities respond effectively to such natural disasters.

Ongoing Attacks in Gaza During Eidul Fitr

Israeli forces continue their assault on Gaza, even during Eidul Fitr, intensifying the humanitarian crisis. Airstrikes and artillery shelling have killed at least nine Palestinians, including children. The violence has devastated residential areas, leaving families in mourning. The situation in Gaza remains dire, with medical teams overwhelmed by the rising number of casualties.

Civilian Areas Under Attack

Israeli airstrikes have targeted homes and public gatherings across Gaza. On March 29, a series of attacks killed 17 Palestinians, including a child, just before Eid. Reports confirm that some victims were near a donkey-drawn cart in the southern region.

Medical sources report that heavy bombardment continues, with explosions rocking various neighborhoods. Families are struggling to find safety as residential buildings collapse under relentless strikes. Emergency responders are working tirelessly but face extreme challenges due to the constant attacks.

Deaths of Emergency Workers

The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) confirmed the deaths of 15 emergency workers. Their bodies were recovered near Rafah, a week after Israeli forces struck their vehicles. The loss of these responders further cripples rescue operations in an already devastated region.

Hospitals are running out of essential supplies, making it difficult to treat the wounded. With airstrikes targeting key locations, medical teams fear more casualties in the coming days.Escalation in the West Bank

In the occupied West Bank, Israeli forces have intensified raids in towns like Nablus and Qabatiya. According to

the Wafa news agency, troops are conducting searches and interrogations. These operations add to the growing unrest, fueling tensions across the Palestinian territories.

International Response

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has taken action against Israeli leadership. Arrest warrants have been issued for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. They face charges of war crimes following the deaths of thousands of Palestinians.

Despite global condemnation, the violence persists. Human rights organizations are calling for an immediate ceasefire, urging world leaders to intervene. However, diplomatic efforts have so far failed to stop the bloodshed.

A Growing Humanitarian Crisis

With continued airstrikes, the situation in Gaza worsens. Thousands have lost their homes, and food and medical supplies are running low. Displaced families struggle to find shelter, while children suffer from trauma and fear.

The international community must act swiftly to prevent further loss of life. Humanitarian organizations are appealing for aid, but safe access remains a challenge. The world watches as Gaza faces one of its darkest periods in recent history.

ChatGPT’s Ghibli-Style Image Craze Overwhelms OpenAI

A new ChatGPT image generation update has sparked a global frenzy, with users flooding social media with Studio Ghibli-style artwork. The surge in demand has been so overwhelming that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman urged users to slow down, citing strain on the company’s resources.

Sam Altman Calls for a Break

As users continued to generate images at an unprecedented rate, Altman took to X (formerly Twitter) to ask people to “chill out.” He revealed that OpenAI’s team had been struggling to keep up with the load since the feature’s launch.

“Can y’all please chill on generating images? Our team needs sleep,” Altman wrote. He later described the demand as “biblical,” saying he had never seen anything like it.

Read: First Solar Eclipse of 2025 Occurs Today, Visible in Select Regions

Why the Demand is So High

ChatGPT’s new image generation feature is different from previous versions. Earlier, it relied on DALL·E 3 for images, but now, the same GPT-4o model that processes text also creates visuals. This allows the AI to generate more detailed, context-aware, and stylized images, leading to a massive surge in usage.

The update initially rolled out to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users, but even free users now have access to the viral Ghibli-style filter. Beyond Ghibli art, users are also exploring comics, posters, presentations, and infographics.

OpenAI Struggles to Keep Up

With millions of users experimenting with image generation, OpenAI’s computing power is under immense pressure. Altman previously mentioned that their GPUs were “melting”, forcing the company to introduce limits on image generation, even for paying users.

Despite these restrictions, demand has not slowed down. Users continue to push the tool’s limits, sharing AI-generated Ghibli characters, dream-like landscapes, and animated scenes across social media.

What’s Next for OpenAI?

While the company works to manage the unexpected surge in activity, OpenAI has not announced any long-term restrictions on image generation. However, further limits may be introduced if demand continues to outpace available resources.

For now, users are encouraged to use the feature responsibly—or at least give OpenAI’s engineers a chance to catch their breath.

Pakistan’s opening batter Usman Khan will miss the second ODI against New Zealand on April 2 due to a hamstring injury. He sustained the injury while fielding in the first ODI at McLean Park in Napier. An MRI scan confirmed a low-grade tear, making him unavailable for the upcoming match at Seddon Park, Hamilton.

Pakistan Faces Another Setback

Pakistan, already struggling after a 4-1 loss in the T20I series, suffered another blow in the ODI opener. Chasing 344, the team looked strong at 249-3 in the 39th over but collapsed under pressure. They were bowled out for 271 in 44.1 overs, losing the match by 73 runs.

New Zealand’s Dominant Performance

Batting first, New Zealand posted an imposing total of 344 runs. Mark Chapman led the charge with a brilliant 132, while debutant Muhammad Abbas smashed a rapid fifty off 24 balls.

Pakistan’s bowlers struggled to contain the Kiwi batters. Nathan Smith (4-60) was the standout performer for New Zealand in the bowling department, dismissing key players at crucial moments. Jacob Duffy took two wickets, while Bracewell, Abbas, and O’Rourke chipped in with one each.

Pakistan’s Collapse

Pakistan started well, keeping up with the required run rate. However, their momentum shifted when Babar Azam fell, triggering a batting collapse. Tayyab Tahir’s run-out and Irfan Khan Niazi’s golden duck left the team in deep trouble at 253-6.

Nathan Smith turned the game further in New Zealand’s favor, dismissing Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf in the 43rd over. Salman Ali Agha fought hard, scoring 58, but his dismissal sealed Pakistan’s fate. Akif Javed fell last, as Pakistan’s innings ended in 44.1 overs.

Pakistan’s Squad for ODI Series

Despite Usman Khan’s injury, Pakistan has a strong squad for the remaining ODIs:

  • Mohammad Rizwan (captain), Salman Ali Agha (vice-captain), Babar Azam, Abdullah Shafique, Imam-ul-Haq, Tayyab Tahir, Mohammad Irfan Khan, Khushdil Shah, Faheem Ashraf, Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, Akif Javed, Mohammad Ali, Abrar Ahmed, Sufyan Moqim.

With Usman ruled out, Pakistan might need to rework their opening combination as they aim to bounce back in the second ODI.

Myanmar Earthquake: Aftershocks Spread Fear as Rescue Efforts Intensify

A 7.7-magnitude earthquake devastated Mandalay, Myanmar, killing over 1,600 people and injuring thousands. Aftershocks continue to shake the city, causing panic among survivors. In neighboring Thailand, at least 18 people have died, and rescuers are searching for those trapped under a collapsed high-rise in Bangkok.

Rescue Operations in Mandalay

Residents and volunteers are desperately digging through collapsed buildings in Mandalay, searching for survivors. Many are working with bare hands, lacking proper rescue equipment. The city’s infrastructure is heavily damaged, with bridges down, roads buckled, and entire buildings reduced to rubble.

One local rescuer described the dangerous conditions, saying that unstable structures make it difficult to reach trapped victims. Without heavy machinery, many survivors remain unreachable. Despite the challenges, teams continue their efforts, pulling some people out alive.

Myanmar Faces Worsening Crisis

The ruling junta government reported over 3,400 injuries and at least 139 missing persons. However, communication issues make it hard to determine the true scale of destruction. Experts predict the death toll could surpass 10,000, and economic losses may exceed Myanmar’s annual output.

Authorities have called on military and civilian hospitals to provide medical aid, but the country lacks the resources to handle a disaster of this scale. The United Nations warns that Myanmar’s medical supplies are critically low, while damaged hospitals and roads hinder relief efforts.

In some of the hardest-hit areas, residents report no government aid. The entire town of Sagaing, near the epicenter, has been destroyed. A local survivor said, “We have no rescue teams, no electricity, and no drinking water.”

International Aid and Ceasefire Announced

Given the severity of the disaster, Myanmar’s junta leader Min Aung Hlaing made a rare appeal for international aid. In response, India has sent military aircraft carrying relief supplies, while China has deployed rescue teams. A 78-member team from Singapore, equipped with rescue dogs, is also assisting in Mandalay.

Myanmar’s ongoing civil war complicates relief efforts. However, opposition forces have declared a two-week ceasefire in quake-affected regions to allow aid distribution. Despite this, reports indicate that military airstrikes continued just hours after the earthquake.

Bangkok High-Rise Collapse

The earthquake also shook Bangkok, Thailand, causing a 30-story building under construction to collapse. At least 32 people were injured, and dozens remain trapped.

Rescue teams are using sniffer dogs, thermal drones, and heavy machinery to locate survivors. The Bangkok Metropolitan Authority has deployed engineers to assess 165 damaged buildings across the city.

Authorities fear the number of casualties will rise as rescue operations continue. With aftershocks still striking, the region remains on high alert.

Punjab Bans Temporary Mechanical Swings on Eid for Public Safety

The Punjab government has banned temporary mechanical swings during Eid-ul-Fitr to prevent accidents and ensure public safety. The decision comes as large crowds are expected at parks, gaming zones, and playgrounds during the festive season. A directive has been issued to all deputy commissioners to enforce the ban across the province.

Strict Safety Measures for Amusement Parks

While temporary swings are prohibited, permanently installed mechanical swings in amusement parks and designated play areas will be allowed. However, these rides must meet strict safety standards before operating.

According to the official notification, amusement parks must obtain fitness certificates for their swings. Additionally, deputy commissioners are responsible for verifying compliance and issuing safety verification certificates before allowing operations.

Sindh Ready to Block Cholistan Canal Project, Warns CM Murad

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has strongly opposed the Cholistan Canal project, warning that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) will take necessary action to halt its development. He emphasized that Sindh’s water rights must be protected, stating, “We are ready to go to any lengths to safeguard our people’s interests.”

Punjab Yet to Start Work on Canal

Speaking to journalists at Chief Minister House in Karachi, Shah revealed that the Punjab government has not yet begun work on the project. He credited this delay to the strong resistance from Sindh, which has consistently opposed the canal’s construction.

The Rs45 billion allocation for the project remains untouched, according to Shah.

Concerns Over Water Scarcity

The chief minister warned that Pakistan is already facing severe water shortages. He pointed out that between 1999 and 2024, the Tarbela Dam reached full capacity for only 17 days, while the Mangla Dam filled up for just four days.

“If we can’t fill our existing dams, how will we sustain new canals?” he questioned. Shah explained that the estimated Rs218 billion cost of the project has now risen to Rs225 billion and may increase further.

He also highlighted that the original plan included a dam in Chiniot, costing $3 billion. However, despite Punjab’s claim that it would spend Rs45 billion in the first year, not a single rupee has been used.

Three Provinces Oppose Project

The Cholistan Canal project is not just a threat to Sindh but to the entire country, Shah warned.

He provided historical context, revealing that the British government rejected a similar project in 1919. He added that during the caretaker government’s tenure, Punjab sought a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Indus River System Authority (IRSA), claiming there was enough water for the canal. However, Sindh’s data shows that water flow has declined significantly over time.

From 1976 to 1999, the average downstream flow at Kotri had already decreased sharply. By 2023, it had declined even further. “How can Punjab justify additional water allocation when Sindh is already struggling?” he asked.

Sindh Assembly Stands United

The Sindh Assembly has passed a resolution against the project, with both the PPP and opposition parties supporting the decision. Shah urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to reject the project unless proper consultations are held.

Karachi Begins Phase-Wise Ban on Qingqi Rickshaws to Ease Traffic

Karachi authorities have launched a phase-wise ban on Qingqi rickshaws as part of new Traffic and Road Safety laws to address congestion and accidents. The move aims to streamline traffic flow while ensuring road safety.

Qingqi Rickshaws Banned on Major Roads

Under the new policy, Qingqi rickshaws are prohibited from five major roads in Karachi. These include:

  • Shaheen Complex to Tower via II Chundrigar Road

  • Metropole to Star Gate on Sharea Faisal

  • Lily intersection to Submarine Underpass on Khaliq uz Zaman Road

  • Liaquatabad No. 10 Gharibabad to National Stadium on Sir Shah Suleman Road

  • Drigh Road to Sohrab Goth on Rashid Minhas Road

The decision follows a rise in fatal accidents, with at least 207 deaths and 2,623 injuries reported this year.

Strict Traffic Rules for Motorcyclists and Transporters

To enhance road safety, new rules now mandate helmets for motorcyclists and restrict them to the left lane. Riders must also ensure that headlights, tail lights, and indicators are in working condition. Registration plates must be visible on both sides, and drivers are required to use rearview mirrors and carry their licenses at all times.

Failure to comply will result in fines, and repeated violations will lead to stricter penalties.

Mandatory GPS, Dashcams, and Monitoring Systems

Authorities have also made GPS trackers, dashcams, and cabin cameras mandatory for vehicles, ensuring accidents are recorded for investigation. Additionally, oil tankers must install buffer plates to prevent spills.

To enforce traffic rules, Karachi will install a modern traffic monitoring system with automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras. These cameras will detect violations such as breaking red signals, improper stopping, and lane violations. Speed cameras and lane-monitoring systems will also be introduced to ensure compliance.

Hefty Fines for Repeat Offenders

Authorities have warned that repeat violators of these traffic laws will face an additional fine of Rs2,500. The new measures aim to improve road discipline, reduce accidents, and create a safer traffic environment in Karachi.

Pakistan will celebrate Eid ul Fitr on March 31 after the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee confirmed the sighting of the Shawwal moon. The decision was announced following a meeting at the Ministry of Religious Affairs in Islamabad, chaired by Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad.

Moon Sighting Confirmed Across the Country

The Ruet-e-Hilal Committee reviewed moon sighting testimonies from various parts of the country before making the announcement. The meeting was attended by officials from the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), SUPARCO, and the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad, while addressing a press conference, confirmed that credible testimonies had been received, confirming the sighting of the Shawwal crescent. As a result, Eid ul Fitr will be celebrated across Pakistan on Monday, March 31.

Eid ul Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the holiest month in the Islamic calendar, during which Muslims observe fasting from dawn to dusk. The festival is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal, determined by the sighting of the new moon.

Similarly, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and other Gulf nations also confirmed the Shawwal crescent and began their Eid celebrations today.

Countries Where Eid Will Be Celebrated on March 31

Islamic Tradition of Moon Sighting

In Islam, the beginning of significant months, including Ramadan, Shawwal, and Muharram, is determined by the sighting of the moon. While modern astronomical predictions help estimate moon visibility, the traditional method of naked-eye observation remains the basis for official announcements in many Muslim countries.

With the confirmation of the Shawwal crescent, Pakistanis are preparing for Eid ul Fitr celebrations. The holiday marks a time of joy, gratitude, and community gatherings, bringing an end to the month-long fasting period.
