The Federal Reserve has decided to keep interest rates unchanged at 4.25%-4.50%, signaling that it is in no hurry to cut rates despite economic uncertainty. Chairman Jerome Powell emphasized the need for clarity on inflation and labor market trends before making any policy adjustments.
Economic Strength and Inflation Concerns
Powell noted that the economy remains strong, and the labor market is stable. However, inflation remains somewhat elevated, prompting the Fed to take a cautious approach. Consumer spending has shown signs of slowing, while uncertainty surrounding economic policies has increased.
The central bank also made a technical decision to slow the decline of its balance sheet, aiming to maintain stability in financial markets.
No Urgency for Rate Cuts
Powell made it clear: the Fed is not in a rush to cut interest rates. If the economy continues to perform well, the current policy stance can be maintained for a longer period. However, if the labor market weakens significantly, the Fed is prepared to ease monetary policy if necessary.
He also pointed out that recent inflationary pressures may be linked to tariffs, but it’s too soon to determine their long-term impact. While housing services inflation is easing, goods inflation has increased, raising concerns about future price stability.
Following the Fed’s announcement, the US Dollar Index initially dipped but later rebounded, gaining 0.4% on the day. The central bank’s updated Summary of Economic Projections (SEP) suggests that:
Interest rates are expected to decline to 3.9% by the end of 2025.
Further cuts may bring rates down to 3.1% by 2027.
Inflation is projected to remain above the 2% target in the near term.
GDP growth is expected to slow, with a 1.7% growth forecast for 2025.
The unemployment rate is projected to rise slightly to 4.4% in 2025.
Impact of Tariffs and Policy Changes
Powell acknowledged that the new administration’s policies, particularly tariffs, have created additional uncertainty. Tariffs often reduce economic growth while pushing inflation higher, making the Fed’s job more challenging.
He stressed that the Fed is focused on separating signal from noise and will wait for clearer economic data before adjusting policy. The central bank is closely watching whether higher goods inflation seen in early 2025 is a temporary effect of tariffs or a sign of persistent price pressures.
What’s Next for Interest Rates?
For now, the Fed is taking a wait-and-see approach. Powell reiterated that policy is not on a preset course, meaning future rate decisions will depend on economic data. If inflation remains high, the Fed may delay cuts. If growth slows significantly, it could adjust policy sooner.
Investors and analysts will closely watch upcoming inflation and labor market reports to gauge when the Fed might finally pivot towards rate cut.
The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has denied claims that it is not issuing fresh banknotes for Eid-ul-Fitr. The central bank continues its tradition of providing new banknotes to commercial banks. This ensures the public can access fresh currency notes during the festive season.
SBP has already supplied Rs. 27 billion worth of fresh banknotes. These notes have been distributed to 17,000 commercial bank branches nationwide. The banks are responsible for further distributing these notes to the public.
The central bank has also ensured that ATMs remain stocked with good-quality banknotes. The goal is to facilitate smooth cash withdrawals during Eid.
Monitoring Distribution of Banknotes
To ensure proper distribution, SBP has deployed Cash Monitoring teams. These teams are conducting on-site inspections. Their job is to ensure banks provide fresh banknotes to the public as intended.
The SBP reassures the public that fresh banknotes are available. It urges citizens to visit their nearest bank branches to obtain new notes.
In a horrifying case of domestic violence, a man in Karachi set his wife on fire after she confronted him about his extramarital affairs. The victim, Rabia, suffered severe burns after her husband, Waqas, tortured and doused her in petrol before setting her ablaze. The incident occurred in Korangi Mehran Town, where the couple had been living for two years.
A Marriage Marked by Abuse
Rabia married Waqas out of her own choice, hoping for a happy life. However, from the beginning, her husband’s behavior was abusive. He frequently beat and tortured her, ignoring her pleas for respect and loyalty. Despite enduring repeated violence, Rabia stayed in the marriage, trying to salvage their relationship.
But Waqas continued his affairs with other women. On March 14, Rabia finally confronted him when he failed to return home on time. Frustrated, she called a number linked to a woman named Amina. Waqas answered and, instead of explaining himself, launched into a verbal attack on his wife.
Waqas came home that night around 11:45 PM, seething with rage. Without hesitation, he tortured Rabia, then poured petrol on her and set her on fire. The attack left her with 40% burns, and she was rushed to the burn ward at Civil Hospital for treatment.
Despite her severe condition, Rabia gave a statement to the police from her deathbed, detailing the horrific assault.
Police Take Action
The Korangi Industrial Area police registered the case on March 16, two days after the attack. The case was filed under attempted murder charges. Soon after, the investigation police launched a manhunt and arrested Waqas in Azeem Pura during an early morning operation on Tuesday.
Family Seeks Justice
Rabia’s brother, Muhammad Jamal, revealed that Waqas had threatened the family if they pursued legal action. Despite these threats, Jamal remains determined to seek justice for his sister.
This tragic case highlights the urgent need to address domestic violence and ensure that victims receive timely protection and justice. Rabia’s family now awaits the legal proceedings, hoping for a strict punishment for Waqas.
Amid rising tensions, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump are holding a crucial phone call following Trump’s recent conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. With Ukraine war negotiations at the forefront, Zelenskyy aims to secure continued U.S. military aid and intelligence support while ensuring no compromises are made at Ukraine’s expense.
Zelenskyy and Trump Begin Key Conversation
Zelenskyy is now speaking with Trump to discuss the details of his call with Putin. According to Ukrainian officials, Zelenskyy wants the U.S. to oversee a 30-day halt on attacks targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, a commitment supposedly made during the Trump-Putin talks.
A spokesperson for Zelenskyy confirmed the call, emphasizing its significance in shaping Ukraine’s next steps in the conflict. The Ukrainian leader is expected to reaffirm his stance against Russian territorial claims and stress that Moscow cannot be trusted to uphold any agreements.
Ukraine’s Concerns Over Military Aid
Ukraine remains focused on securing ongoing military aid and intelligence sharing from the U.S. Zelenskyy has consistently warned against any diplomatic concessions that could weaken Ukraine’s position. He has also reiterated that Ukraine will not recognize occupied territories as part of Russia, a red line that Kyiv refuses to cross.
While Trump has expressed a desire for peace talks, Ukrainian officials worry that Moscow may be using negotiations as a strategy to weaken international support for Ukraine.
Prisoner Exchange Between Russia and Ukraine
In a separate development, both Ukraine and Russia confirmed a large-scale prisoner exchange brokered by the United Arab Emirates. Ukraine regained 175 soldiers, while Russia received 175 troops and 22 seriously wounded prisoners in need of urgent medical assistance.
This marks one of the largest prisoner swaps in recent months, highlighting ongoing diplomatic negotiations despite continued fighting on the battlefield.
France has condemned overnight Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure, stating that they contradict Moscow’s promises during the Trump-Putin call. The French Foreign Ministry pointed out that Russia’s words do not align with its actions, as some of the latest strikes targeted civilian areas.
This raises concerns over the effectiveness of any ceasefire agreements Russia commits to in international discussions.
Putin’s Claims and Ukraine’s Response
Meanwhile, Putin has declared that Russian forces are nearing victory in western Ukraine’s Kursk region. However, Ukraine denies these claims, stating that its forces are holding their positions and have not been surrounded or forced to retreat.
Russia’s Defense Ministry also accused Ukraine of trying to undermine the Trump-Putin agreement by launching an attack on an oil depot in southern Russia. Kyiv has not responded to this accusation.
Finland’s Position on the Ceasefire Proposal
Finland’s President Alexander Stubb has called for Russia’s unconditional acceptance of a ceasefire, as proposed during Trump’s diplomatic efforts. Speaking in Helsinki alongside Zelenskyy, Stubb emphasized that any peace agreement must respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and prevent Russia from dictating terms.
With the Trump-Zelenskyy conversation underway, all eyes are on Washington and Kyiv to see how the U.S. will shape its support for Ukraine in the coming weeks.

FireSat, a groundbreaking satellite constellation, is set to transform wildfire detection and management worldwide. Launched by the Earth Fire Alliance in collaboration with Google and Muon Space, this advanced system uses high-resolution infrared cameras and AI-powered analysis to detect and track wildfires with unprecedented speed and accuracy. As climate change fuels more frequent and intense fires, FireSat offers a powerful solution to protect communities, ecosystems, and economies.
Faster, More Accurate Wildfire Detection
Traditional satellite systems struggle with wildfire detection due to low-resolution imaging and infrequent updates, often spotting fires only twice a day. In contrast, FireSat provides updates every 20 minutes, dramatically improving response times.
Equipped with multispectral infrared cameras, FireSat can detect fires as small as 270 square feet, identifying them much earlier than conventional systems. AI-powered algorithms analyze satellite images, filtering out false alarms like industrial smokestacks and improving detection accuracy. This technology allows emergency responders to react swiftly, minimizing fire spread and damage.
The Earth Fire Alliance, a nonprofit organization, leads this ambitious project with support from Google and Muon Space. Their goal is to create a global wildfire monitoring network, ensuring rapid detection and intervention.
By 2030, the FireSat network will expand to over 50 satellites, covering every wildfire-prone region worldwide. The initiative highlights how partnerships between technology giants and space startups can address major environmental challenges.
How AI Enhances Fire Prediction
FireSat’s AI-powered detection system analyzes real-time satellite images and compares them with historical data to identify anomalies. This capability not only helps detect fires but also predicts their spread, enabling firefighters to deploy resources more effectively.
For instance, if a fire is detected in a high-risk zone, the system can estimate its movement based on wind speed, humidity, and terrain conditions. This information allows authorities to issue early evacuation warnings and take preventative measures to protect communities.
Reducing Economic and Environmental Damage
Wildfires cause massive financial losses, with damages in places like Los Angeles reaching over $250 billion earlier this year. Beyond property destruction, fires also increase insurance costs, disrupt economies, and worsen air quality, leading to severe health impacts.
FireSat’s rapid response capabilities can reduce these costs by preventing fires from escalating. Additionally, by protecting forested areas, the system helps preserve biodiversity, carbon storage, and essential ecosystems.
Shaping the Future of Wildfire Management
With FireSat now operational, authorities have an unprecedented tool to combat wildfires. As more satellites join the network, early detection and predictive analysis will become even more precise, significantly reducing fire-related devastation.
The question now is: How will governments and emergency agencies integrate this technology to strengthen wildfire prevention and response efforts?
Babar Azam and Naseem Shah had a tough return to domestic cricket as Lahore Blues suffered a defeat against Karachi Whites in the National T20 Cup.
Babar’s Underwhelming Performance
Babar Azam, opening for Lahore Blues, managed 22 runs off 17 balls, hitting three boundaries before getting caught while attempting a reverse sweep. His early dismissal put pressure on the batting lineup, making the chase harder for his team.
The star batter, who scored 87 runs in two innings during the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, was expected to anchor the innings but fell short of expectations. His struggle continues as he looks to regain rhythm before Pakistan’s next international assignment.
Naseem Shah had an even tougher outing, conceding 41 runs in four overs without taking a wicket. With an economy rate of 10.25, he failed to trouble Karachi’s batters.
Lahore Blues Fall Short in Chase
Chasing 172, Lahore Blues crumbled under pressure, getting bowled out for 134 in 18.5 overs. Despite a promising start, the middle order failed to capitalize, leading to their first loss in the tournament.
On the other hand, Karachi Whites posted 171/5 while batting first. Saud Shakeel led the charge with a brilliant 73 off 52 balls, smashing eight fours and three sixes. His innings proved to be the difference as Lahore Blues failed to match the total.
Preparations for New Zealand Tour
Despite their struggles in domestic cricket, Babar Azam and Naseem Shah remain crucial members of Pakistan’s ODI squad for New Zealand.
As the National T20 Cup continues, both players will look to regain form and silence their critics before returning to the international stage.

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) surged as investor confidence grew over the circular debt resolution and progress in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) program. The KSE-100 Index gained 801.50 points (0.69%), closing at 117,001.09, extending its bullish momentum.
Market Performance and Investor Sentiment
The KSE-100 Index saw a strong trading session, reaching an intraday high of 117,202.09 and a low of 116,490.82. The energy sector attracted heavy buying as investors anticipated improved cash flow due to the government’s debt restructuring measures. Analysts linked the rally to hopes of circular debt resolution and financial relief under the IMF program.
IMF Approves Debt Management Plan
In a key development, the IMF authorized Pakistan to borrow Rs1.25 trillion ($4.5 billion) from domestic banks without increasing the country’s official public debt. This move provides fiscal space to manage the Rs2.4 trillion circular debt, which has burdened the energy sector.
To fund these repayments, the government will continue levying a Rs3 per kilowatt-hour Debt Service Surcharge (DSS) on electricity bills, expected to generate over Rs300 billion annually. Authorities also aim to retire Rs1.5 trillion in circular debt through bank loans and revenue from the surcharge.
Energy Sector Reforms and Future Savings
Officials anticipate saving Rs463 billion after renegotiating agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs). These adjustments will lower capacity payments and modify tariff structures. The IMF’s support reflects confidence in Pakistan’s energy sector reforms under the $7 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF).
Pakistan has assured the IMF that improved collection mechanisms and operational efficiencies will prevent a resurgence of circular debt. Power Minister Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari stated that while a formal decision is awaited, he is optimistic about the IMF’s approval of the borrowing plan. He confirmed that the DSS will remain unchanged in any final agreement with banks.
The IMF shared a draft of the Memorandum of Economic and Financial Policies (MEFP) with Pakistani officials, marking another step toward finalizing the ongoing loan review. The Fund has also indicated potential relief for the construction and real estate sectors, though it remains unclear whether these incentives will be implemented immediately or included in the 2025-26 fiscal budget.
Pakistan and the IMF concluded discussions last week without reaching a staff-level agreement (SLA). This delay means further policy negotiations are necessary before Islamabad can request the next $1 billion tranche under the EFF. The IMF’s Executive Board will review Pakistan’s case once an agreement is finalized.
Strong Start to the Trading Week
The PSX continued its upward momentum from the previous session. On Monday, the KSE-100 Index closed 663.42 points higher (0.57%), settling at 116,199.59. The index reached a high of 116,626.83 and a low of 115,883.22 during the session.
With continued optimism over economic stability and the IMF’s support, investor confidence remains strong, driving positive sentiment in the stock market.
The Voice of America cuts ordered by Donald Trump have sparked global reactions, with China’s state media celebrating the move. The cuts have put 1,300 staff on leave and severely impacted media outlets that report on authoritarian regimes. Critics warn this weakens press freedom, while Beijing calls it a victory against “Western propaganda.”
China Praises Funding Cuts
China’s Global Times denounced Voice of America (VOA) and Radio Free Asia (RFA), calling them “lie factories.” The newspaper claimed these outlets had been “discarded like a dirty rag” by the U.S. government. Former Global Times editor Hu Xijin also welcomed the cuts, celebrating the blow to media that have been critical of China.
For decades, VOA and RFA have reported on human rights violations, government corruption, and press repression in China, North Korea, and beyond. RFA exposed the existence of detention centers in Xinjiang, where China is accused of detaining Uyghur Muslims. VOA’s reports on North Korean defectors and Beijing’s COVID-19 cover-ups have won international recognition.
The funding cuts directly affect the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), which funds VOA, RFA, and Radio Free Europe (RFE). These outlets reach millions of people worldwide, offering independent journalism in nearly 50 languages.
Former VOA journalist Valdya Baraputri, who lost her job, warned that eliminating these news sources benefits authoritarian governments. “This move allows disinformation to thrive,” she said.
The National Press Club called the cuts a major setback for press freedom. Founded during World War II to counter Nazi propaganda, VOA has been a vital source of information in countries with censored media. Even today, people in China and North Korea access VOA broadcasts using shortwave radios and VPNs.
Global Reactions and Political Debate
In Cambodia, former leader Hun Sen praised Trump’s decision, calling it a “major step toward eliminating fake news.” The move has also fueled a heated political debate in the U.S. The White House defended the order, claiming it saves taxpayers from funding “radical propaganda.”
However, RFA CEO Bay Fang accused Trump of helping dictators by silencing critical journalism. “This decision benefits America’s adversaries at our own expense,” he said.
The Czech Republic has even appealed to the European Union to help keep Radio Free Europe alive, as it reaches millions of people across 27 languages in 23 countries.
The Future of Independent Journalism
The future of VOA, RFA, and RFE remains uncertain. RFA has vowed to challenge Trump’s order, while VOA’s director Michael Abramowitz warned that this move weakens America’s global influence.
Meanwhile, Chinese dissidents and supporters of press freedom fear that with these voices silenced, the world will be left with only state-controlled narratives. As one exiled Chinese activist put it, “If the free world stays silent, the dictator’s voice will be the only echo left.”
The Sindh Education Department has declared March 22 a holiday for educational institutions across the province. The decision honors Youm-e-Ali, observed on the 21st of Ramadan, marking the martyrdom of Hazrat Ali (RA). Both public and private schools under the School Education and Literacy Department will remain closed.
Official Notification and Decision
The education department issued an official notification confirming the holiday on Saturday, March 22. However this decision follows the recommendations of Sindh’s sub-committee within the steering committee on education.
Significance of Youm-e-Ali
Youm-e-Ali is observed annually on Ramadan 21 to commemorate the martyrdom of Hazrat Ali (RA), the fourth caliph of Islam. It is a day of religious significance, marked by large processions and gatherings across the country. Many cities, including Karachi, witness public processions where thousands participate to pay tribute.
The closure applies to all public and private schools across Sindh. Students and teachers will observe a day off as part of the province’s recognition of this important religious event. Schools will resume regular operations after the holiday.
Security and Procession Arrangements
Authorities make special security arrangements every year to ensure the peaceful observance of Youm-e-Ali. Processions in major cities are escorted by law enforcement agencies, and traffic routes are adjusted accordingly.
This annual observance is a reminder of Hazrat Ali’s legacy, and the closure of schools allows families to participate in religious activities without academic interruptions.
A small plane crash near Roatán, a popular Caribbean island in Honduras, has left 12 people dead, including renowned musician and politician Aurelio Martínez. The tragic accident occurred moments after takeoff, with only five survivors rescued from the ocean by local fishermen.
Crash Moments After Takeoff
The Jetstream 32 aircraft took off from Roatán on Monday evening, heading for La Ceiba, a coastal city in northern Honduras. The twin-engine plane, carrying 15 passengers and two crew members, crashed seconds later into the sea.
Authorities confirmed that 12 people lost their lives, while five miraculously survived. Local fishermen, working near the site, spotted bodies in the water. Realizing some were still alive, they rushed to pull them onto their boat. Aldair Alemán, one of the fishermen, described the harrowing scene: “Some were drowning, begging for help. We pulled four people aboard before handing them to rescuers.”
Emergency responders later arrived, lining up along the rocky coastline to recover victims and survivors. Videos shared on social media showed rescue teams pulling people from the water and laying them on stretchers.
The five survivors were flown to a hospital in San Pedro Sula for urgent medical attention. According to witnesses, some had severe injuries, including broken bones and facial wounds.
Authorities are still working to recover the body of the co-pilot, which remains trapped inside the submerged wreckage. The aircraft’s fuselage and black box have not yet been retrieved due to dangerous reefs surrounding the crash site, making navigation difficult.
Aurelio Martínez: A Cultural Icon Lost
Among the victims was Aurelio Martínez, a celebrated Garifuna musician and politician. Known for preserving the Garifuna culture, Martínez was a pioneer in bringing its music to international audiences.
He founded Lita Ariran, one of the first Garifuna groups to gain global recognition. His record label, Real World Records, described him as “more than just a musician—he was a statesman and cultural ambassador.”His death is a profound loss, not only for Honduras but for Caribbean culture worldwide.
Investigation Underway
The cause of the crash remains unknown. The Honduran Civil Aeronautics Agency has launched an investigation to determine what went wrong. Experts will analyze flight data, wreckage, and weather conditions at the time of the accident.
Roatán, located 35 miles off the Honduran mainland, is a major tourist hub known for its pristine coral reefs and diving spots. The incident has raised concerns over air travel safety in the region.
As authorities continue their investigation, the nation mourns the lives lost, especially that of Aurelio Martínez, whose legacy will live on through his music and cultural contributions.
Two NASA astronauts, stranded aboard the International Space Station (ISS) since June 2024, are finally heading back to Earth after a nine-month delay. Sunita Williams and Barry “Butch” Wilmore, originally scheduled for a short mission, had their stay extended due to the failure of Boeing’s Starliner capsule. They are now returning aboard a SpaceX Dragon capsule alongside two other astronauts.
Delayed Return After Starliner Failure
Williams and Wilmore arrived at the ISS on June 6, 2024, for a brief test flight of the Starliner capsule. Their mission was supposed to last only ten days, but technical failures forced NASA and Boeing to send the Starliner back to Earth without them in September. Instead of returning, the two astronauts were integrated into the station’s crew, replacing others who were reassigned.
After months of uncertainty, a SpaceX Dragon capsule undocked from the ISS at 1:05 a.m. ET, carrying them and two other astronauts—American Nicholas Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov. The crew is expected to splash down off the Florida coast around 6 p.m. ET after a 17-hour journey.
Farewell From the ISS Crew
As the Dragon capsule pulled away from the station, NASA’s Anne McClain bid them farewell, saying, “We’ll miss you, but have a great journey home.” Inside the capsule, Hague expressed gratitude for being part of an international team working for the “benefit of humanity.”
NASA officials assured that weather conditions for the splashdown were optimal, making for a smooth return. Before departure, the astronauts underwent final system checks inside the capsule while sharing emotional goodbyes with their ISS colleagues.
The prolonged stay of Williams and Wilmore turned into a political issue, with SpaceX founder Elon Musk and former President Donald Trump accusing the Biden administration of abandoning them in space. Musk claimed, without evidence, that NASA rejected his offer to bring them home earlier.
Wilmore acknowledged Musk’s statements but admitted he had no details about what was offered or rejected. In a previous interview, he dismissed the idea of being abandoned, stating, “We don’t feel stuck or stranded. We prefer to be seen as prepared and committed.”
The situation sparked a heated exchange between Musk and European astronaut Andreas Mogensen, who refuted Musk’s claims and pointed out that the astronauts’ return had been planned for months. Musk responded by insulting Mogensen, which led to further backlash from former astronauts and even U.S. Senator Mark Kelly, a retired astronaut himself.
What’s Next for Starliner?
Boeing’s Starliner program faces uncertainty. Engineers are still investigating technical failures, including thruster malfunctions and helium leaks. Reports suggest the spacecraft may not fly again in 2025, but Boeing remains committed to resolving the issues and securing a new flight certification.

Criticism of the Pakistan cricket team has become a routine, according to fast bowler Haris Rauf, who believes people are quick to point fingers whenever the team loses. Following Pakistan’s defeat in the second T20I against New Zealand in Dunedin, Rauf addressed the ongoing scrutiny, emphasizing the need for patience with players.
Criticism Has Become the Norm
Speaking after the match, Rauf acknowledged that everyone is entitled to their opinion but expressed frustration over the constant negative feedback.
“People seem to be waiting for us to lose so they can start criticizing,” he said. “Criticism has become a routine in Pakistan cricket.”
He stressed that young players need proper opportunities to develop at the international level. “In world cricket, young cricketers are usually given 10 to 15 matches to prove themselves before they can grow into top players,” he explained.
Rauf admitted that New Zealand played superior cricket, while Pakistan’s bowlers struggled to execute their plans. He pointed out that some of the shots played by New Zealand’s batters were frustrating for the bowlers.
“Even top edges were going for sixes,” he noted.
He also highlighted the impact of Dunedin’s conditions, explaining that the strong winds and small boundaries made it difficult for bowlers. Deliveries that would typically result in catches ended up clearing the ropes.
“Our bowling unit gave its best, but the results didn’t go our way,” he added.
Fast Bowlers Struggle Everywhere, Not Just in Asia
Responding to the claim that Pakistan’s fast bowlers struggle on Asian pitches, Rauf dismissed it as a misconception.
“Fast bowlers from all over the world face challenges in Asian conditions,” he stated.
He revealed that when international pacers tour Pakistan, they often seek advice on how to bowl effectively.
“We tell them to just keep trying,” Rauf said.
Despite Pakistan trailing 0-2 in the series, Rauf remains optimistic about the team’s ability to bounce back in the upcoming matches. Pakistan will face New Zealand in the third T20I on March 21 in Auckland, aiming to keep their hopes alive in the series.
Consumers in Pakistan are paying over Rs100 per litre in taxes, duties, and margins on petrol and diesel, adding a significant burden on fuel prices. Official documents reveal that despite no sales tax on petroleum products, multiple charges keep prices high for the public.
Breakdown of Petrol and Diesel Costs
According to the latest figures, taxes, duties, and margins account for Rs107.12 per litre on petrol and Rs104.59 per litre on high-speed diesel (HSD). The ex-refinery price of petrol is Rs148.51 per litre, while HSD costs Rs154.06 per litre before any additional charges.
A petroleum levy of Rs70 per litre is imposed on both fuels. Customs duty further adds Rs15.28 per litre on petrol and Rs15.78 per litre on HSD. In addition, oil marketing companies (OMCs) and dealers earn commissions of Rs7.87 and Rs8.64 per litre, respectively.
The inland freight equalization margin (IFEM)—a charge meant to balance transport costs across regions—adds Rs5.33 per litre on petrol and Rs2.30 per litre on diesel. Despite these additional costs, no sales tax is currently being applied to petrol or HSD.
Government’s Decision on Fuel Prices
On March 15, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif decided to keep fuel prices unchanged for the next two weeks. While global fuel prices had declined, instead of passing the benefit to consumers, the government opted to divert the relief toward reducing power tariffs.
The Finance Division issued a notification confirming that all petroleum product prices would remain at their current levels.
Impact of High Fuel Taxes
The heavy taxation on petroleum products has a direct impact on inflation, as fuel costs influence transportation, goods pricing, and overall living expenses. The government’s reliance on petroleum levies for revenue has kept fuel prices elevated despite fluctuations in the international market.
With consumers already facing rising electricity and food costs, the high fuel burden adds to economic hardships, making affordability a growing concern. As discussions on energy pricing continue, calls for a more consumer-friendly approach to taxation on petroleum products are increasing.
Pakistan suffered their second consecutive loss in the T20I series against New Zealand, falling short by five wickets in a rain-affected match in Dunedin. Batting struggles continued as Pakistan failed to adapt to the extra bounce, managing only 91 and 135 in their two outings so far. Skipper Salman Ali Agha acknowledged the need for further improvements, especially in batting and consistency across all departments.
Pakistan’s Batting Woes Continue
Speaking after the match, Agha admitted that Pakistan’s batting had slightly improved compared to their performance in Christchurch but still required significant enhancement.
“I think we batted a bit better in this game than in Christchurch, but we need a stronger finish. Fielding was outstanding, and bowling was good in patches, but consistency is key,” Agha said.
He emphasized the challenge of adjusting to New Zealand’s bounce, which has troubled Pakistani batters. “When we adjust to the bounce, we will be a better team,” he added.
Pakistan’s biggest setback was their Powerplay performance, where they conceded 66 runs in just five overs, allowing New Zealand to gain early control. While the bowling attack recovered later in the innings, the early damage proved too costly.
“After the Powerplay, we bowled well. The spinners did a good job, and Haris Rauf bowled brilliantly. But we need to be better in the Powerplay and more consistent throughout the game,” Agha admitted.
Looking Ahead to the Third T20I
Trailing 0-2 in the five-match series, Pakistan now faces an uphill battle. Agha remains hopeful that his team can bounce back.
“As a batting unit, we need a stronger Powerplay. Similarly, our bowlers must improve in the first six overs. These are key areas where we must step up,” he stated.
Pakistan will now take on New Zealand in the third T20I in Auckland on March 21. With the series slipping away, they must regroup quickly to stay in contention.
The National Security Committee (NSC) reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to eliminating terrorism and emphasized a unified political and strategic approach to counter the growing threat. In a high-level meeting held in Parliament, leaders from across the country reviewed the security situation and called for immediate implementation of anti-terror strategies.
An in-camera session of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) took place on Tuesday, lasting over six hours. The meeting brought together Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Army Chief General Asim Munir, and other key military and political figures.
Chief ministers from Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa participated, along with provincial governors and Inspectors General of Police (IGPs). However, BNP leader Sardar Akhtar Mengal was invited but did not attend. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) initially agreed to join but later withdrew, making its participation conditional on a meeting with the party’s founder.
Strong Condemnation of Terrorism and Support for Security Forces
The committee strongly condemned recent terrorist attacks and expressed solidarity with the victims. It praised the bravery of security forces and law enforcement agencies, recognizing their sacrifices in the fight against terrorism.
Pakistan’s leadership reaffirmed a zero-tolerance policy for terrorist networks and emphasized the urgent implementation of the National Action Plan (NAP) and Azm-e-Istahkam strategy. These initiatives aim to dismantle terrorist infrastructure, disrupt logistical support, and eliminate links between terrorism and organized crime.
Curbing the Digital Threat of Terrorism
A key concern raised during the meeting was the increasing use of social media platforms by terrorist groups. Militants are exploiting digital spaces for propaganda, recruitment, and attack coordination. The committee stressed the need for stronger measures to counter online extremist content and disrupt these digital networks.
Unwavering Support for Armed Forces and Law Enforcement
The NSC reaffirmed its full backing for the armed forces, police, and intelligence agencies. Leaders emphasized that the entire nation stands united with security forces in their mission to eliminate terrorism.
The committee also issued a clear warning that no individual, group, or institution aiding hostile forces will be allowed to destabilize Pakistan. It pledged strict action against internal and external threats to national security.
Response to the Balochistan Train Attack
The meeting followed the recent terrorist attack by the outlawed Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA). Militants targeted train tracks in Bolan district and held over 440 passengers hostage in a day-long standoff.
Security forces launched a successful operation, rescuing the hostages and killing 33 attackers. However, the militants had already martyred 26 passengers, including security personnel. Four additional security officers lost their lives during the rescue mission.
Ongoing Efforts for National Security
Despite the absence of some opposition members, the committee stressed that national security discussions would continue. The fight against terrorism requires unity, strategic planning, and swift action, and Pakistan remains committed to ensuring peace and stability.

Early this morning, Israeli airstrikes pounded the Gaza Strip, killing at least 330 people and injuring hundreds more. The strikes shattered the two-month ceasefire with Hamas, escalating tensions in the already volatile region.
Netanyahu Justifies Attacks
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the military action, claiming Hamas had refused to release hostages and extend the first phase of a U.S.-proposed agreement. The bombings targeted schools, humanitarian shelters, and densely populated areas, leaving scores of civilians, including children, among the dead.
U.S. Response and Global Reaction
The United States, informed in advance about Israel’s plans, stated that groups like Hamas would “pay a price” for their actions. Meanwhile, global leaders condemned the renewed violence, urging restraint to prevent further loss of civilian lives. Hamas accused Israel of breaking the ceasefire and jeopardizing hostages still held in Gaza.
The escalation has deepened political turmoil in Israel. Netanyahu’s recent decision to fire Shin Bet intelligence chief Ronen Bar sparked backlash. The opposition and Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara warned that the move could be illegal. Protests erupted in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, with demonstrators denouncing the government’s handling of the conflict.
Uncertain Future for Gaza
The end of the ceasefire raises fears of prolonged violence. With rising casualties and mounting destruction, concerns grow over the humanitarian crisis. Analysts warn that further military action could plunge the region into a deeper cycle of bloodshed, leaving civilians to bear the brunt of the conflict.
The scorching Arabian sun hung low over the battlefield, casting long shadows across the desert sands. This was 17th ramadan 2 AH. The air was thick with the scent of war—fear, sweat, and destiny intertwining in an unseen dance. A small group of 313 believers stood firm, their hearts pounding, their swords gripped tightly. Before them, a massive army loomed, their banners high, their arrogance even higher. The Quraysh had come, sure of their victory, believing their numbers would crush the fledgling Muslim force. But what they did not know was that the heavens had already written a different fate.
A Call to the Divine
As the two armies faced each other, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ turned away from the battlefield for a moment, lifting his hands towards the sky. His voice, filled with desperation and unwavering faith, called upon his Lord:
“O Allah, if this small band of believers is destroyed today, none will remain to worship You on this earth.”
His prayer was not a plea born out of fear, but a submission to the Divine decree. The believers had no wealth, no armor, no warhorses like their enemy. They had only their faith—a faith so unshakable that it reached beyond the skies. And then, the answer came.
Surah Al-Anfal (8:9-10)
“Remember when you cried out to your Lord for help, He responded: ‘I will reinforce you with a thousand angels, coming one after another.’ Allah made this a message of hope to reassure your hearts. Victory comes only from Allah. Surely, Allah is Almighty, All-Wise.”
A thousand angels descended from the heavens, unseen yet felt, their presence sending tremors through the battlefield. The enemy did not know what awaited them. But the believers, their hearts now alight with divine assurance, knew that they were no longer alone.
A Night of Miracles
Before the battle, something extraordinary happened. A sudden rainfall blessed the land. When the believers first arrived at the battlefield, they found the sand soft and unstable, causing their feet to sink. On the other hand, the Quraysh stood on firm, dry ground, their footing secure. But then, the rain came.
The Battlefield Where Heaven and Earth Collided
For the Quraysh, stationed on unstable terrain, the rain turned the sand into mud, making their movements sluggish. Yet, for the believers, the rain hardened the ground beneath their feet, giving them a firm stance.
Even more astonishing, the Sahaba fell into a peaceful sleep for a brief moment on the battlefield. Who sleeps before war? Yet, they woke up refreshed and energized, as if their strength had been miraculously restored.
These were not mere coincidences—these were divine interventions. Allah was preparing His army in ways unseen.
The Unseen Warriors
The clash began. Swords clanged, arrows whistled through the air, and dust spiraled into the heavens. The Quraysh fought with might and rage, but soon, something strange happened. Their strongest warriors fell as if struck by an invisible force. Some screamed, claiming they saw men in white robes with radiant faces, wielding swords of light.
Abu Jahl, the arch-enemy of Islam, stood in the midst of battle, his arrogance faltering. His warriors spoke of strange occurrences—horses rearing in terror, unseen hands pushing them back.
One Quraysh soldier, trembling, whispered, “We were not fighting men. We were fighting something else—something beyond us.”
A Fistful of Sand, A Storm of Defeat
As the battle raged on, the Prophet ﷺ bent down, scooped a handful of sand, and raised his blessed hand toward the enemy. His voice, firm and commanding, carried through the desert winds:
“May their faces be struck!”
The grains of sand scattered in the air, caught by an unseen force, sweeping across the enemy ranks like a divine storm. The Quraysh warriors blinked, their vision blurred, their minds clouded. They stumbled, lost their footing, their swords slipping from their grasp.
Surah Al-Anfal (8:17)
“It was not you who killed them but Allah; it was not you who threw sand at them, but it was Allah who did so, to test the believers with a great trial from Himself. Surely, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.”
This was not merely an act of a man—this was the hand of Allah intervening. The enemy’s confidence crumbled, their unity shattered. Panic set in. The mighty Quraysh warriors, who had come with pride, now ran in fear.
The Judgment Has Been Delivered
In a matter of hours, the battle was over. The Quraysh, despite their superior numbers and weapons, had been utterly defeated. Seventy of their best men lay dead, including Abu Jahl, their leader who had sworn to destroy Islam. The rest fled, their pride broken, their spirits crushed.
Surah Al-Anfal (8:19)
“If you ˹pagans˺ sought judgment, the judgment has come to you. If you desist, it is best for you. But if you return to war, so will We. Your forces will not help you—no matter how numerous they are. For Allah is certainly with the believers.”
The Battle of Badr was not just a military victory. It was a divine declaration. It was a lesson to the world that faith in Allah outweighs swords, that the unseen world fights for those who stand for truth.
Before the battle, the Prophet ﷺ had pointed to specific spots in the sand and declared where certain Quraysh leaders would fall. One by one, as the battle ended, their lifeless bodies were found exactly where he had prophesied.
This was a testament that this victory was written long before the first sword was drawn.
A Victory Etched in the Skies
The believers, despite being outnumbered three to one, had triumphed—not by their swords, but by their faith. The angels had fought beside them. The rain had strengthened them. The sand had become a storm against their enemies. And the heavens had answered their call.
As the sun set over the battlefield, the Prophet ﷺ stood among his companions, his eyes filled with gratitude. This was a victory for Islam, a victory for faith, a victory written not just in history but in the divine decree of Allah.
The world would remember Badr, not as a battle of numbers, but as a battle where the unseen world descended to protect the believers.
And in every battle thereafter, in every struggle for truth, the lesson of Badr would echo:
Victory comes not from numbers, nor from weapons, but from Allah alone.
