Dr. Seemin Jamali, the former head of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC), passes away on Saturday after a long illness.
She was known as the “iron lady of the JPMC” for her exceptional contributions to healthcare in Pakistan. Dr. Jamali graduated from Nawabshah Medical College in 1986 and completed her house job at Dr. Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital in Karachi.
Career and Achievements:
The deceased doctor served as the longest-serving Grade-21 executive director at JPMC. She worked tirelessly in the emergency ward for nearly three decades.
Dr. Seemin Jamali’s expertise and compassionate care saved countless lives.
However, she was diagnosed with colon cancer in November 2020, yet Dr Jamali continued to work. While undergoing treatment, she emerged victorious in her battle against the disease.

Her resilience and determination inspired many. She had earned the admiration and respect of her colleagues and patients alike.
Dr. Jamali pursued further education to enhance her skills in healthcare management. As a result, she obtained a Master’s in Primary Healthcare Management (MPHM) from Thailand and a postdoctoral fellowship in Emergency Care from the United States of America.
Awards for Remarkable Contributions
Dr. Seemin Jamali received numerous accolades and awards for her remarkable contributions. She received Tamgha-e-Imtiaz in 2019. The ‘iron lady’ was also recognized as a “global hero” by the World Health Organisation for her exceptional services during the coronavirus pandemic.
The deceased retired from her position at JPMC in August 2021, but her retirement did not mark the end of her journey. Dr. Jamali continued to make a difference in the medical field.
In October 2022, the Pakistan Army conferred upon her the honourary rank of lieutenant colonel. Pak Army recognized her outstanding service and commitment.
Dr. Seemin Jamali’s passing is a significant loss to the medical community and the people of Karachi. However, her legacy of unwavering dedication will inspire future generations.

According to the family’s announcement, the family will hold the funeral of Dr. Jamali at JPMC’s mosque during Asar prayers on Sunday.
The deceased has left a husband, Dr. AR Jamali, and two sons. The city mourns the loss of this extraordinary medical professional and will remember her contributions.
