Hamas-Israel Ceasefire Talks Stall as Mandate Questioned

indirect ceasefire talks between Hamas and Israel in Doha ended without progress, according to Palestinian sources. The Israeli delegation reportedly lacked the authority to finalize any agreement, casting doubt on the potential for an immediate breakthrough.
Talks Begin, But Without Real Mandate
The indirect negotiations resumed on Sunday in Qatar, just ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s planned visit to the White House—his third since Donald Trump returned to office.
Two Palestinian officials familiar with the matter told Reuters that the Israeli team arrived in Doha without “real powers” to secure a deal. “The delegation is not sufficiently authorized to reach an agreement with Hamas,” they said.
Before departing for Washington, Netanyahu stated that his negotiators were under clear instructions to seek a deal based on terms Israel has already accepted. However, the lack of authority reported by Palestinian sources suggests internal divisions or hesitation within the Israeli government.

Public Pressure Grows in Israel
As political leaders debated the future of the war, public pressure mounted. On Saturday evening, hundreds gathered in Tel Aviv’s Defense Ministry district, demanding a ceasefire and the return of hostages held by Hamas. Demonstrators carried Israeli flags and posters of the roughly 50 hostages believed to still be in Gaza.
Of the 251 people initially taken hostage during Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack, most have been freed through diplomacy or military operations. Israeli sources believe around 20 hostages are still alive.
Gaza’s Human Toll
Meanwhile, Gaza continues to suffer under Israel’s military campaign. According to Gaza’s health ministry, over 57,000 Palestinians have been killed since the war began. The region now faces widespread hunger, mass displacement, and infrastructure collapse.
What Lies Ahead?
While Washington pushes for progress, the lack of decision-making power among Israeli negotiators casts uncertainty over future sessions. With Netanyahu in Washington and regional tensions high, the next few days could shape the path toward—or away from—a possible ceasefire
