In a significant setback for the party, top Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders have lost key parliamentary positions following a recent PTI disqualification ruling by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). The ECP’s action came after the conviction of several PTI lawmakers in connection with the May 9 incidents. As a result, opposition leader Omar Ayub, along with Zartaj Gul and Ahmad Chattha, has been removed from powerful legislative roles.
Opposition Leadership Reshuffled
Omar Ayub has been officially removed from the post of opposition leader in the National Assembly. The NA speaker announced the development during a session on Friday, confirming that Ayub, Zartaj Gul (parliamentary leader), and Ahmad Chattha (deputy parliamentary leader) were disqualified based on the ECP’s notification.
This decision follows the anti-terrorism court’s verdict that sentenced 108 out of 185 accused individuals in the May 9 riots. The court acquitted 77 others, including former ministers Fawad Chaudhry, Zain Qureshi, and Khayal Kastro.
Seats Declared Vacant Across Committees
The disqualification not only ended the trio’s leadership roles but also affected several standing committee memberships. The National Assembly revoked PTI members’ roles in 15 committees, stripping seven disqualified lawmakers of their positions.
Sahibzada Hamid Raza, who chaired the Standing Committee on Human Rights, has lost his position. Zartaj Gul, once a committee member, has also been removed. Additionally, Rai Hassan Nawaz has been dismissed as chairperson of the Standing Committee on Railways.

PAC Membership Also Revoked
Omar Ayub’s removal extended to the Public Accounts Committee, where he served on the finance committee. The speaker announced that all related memberships had been withdrawn in line with the rules of the assembly and in compliance with the ECP’s ruling.
This move comes amid increasing legal scrutiny of lawmakers linked to the May 9 violence that erupted following the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan. The violence led to attacks on government buildings, military installations, and widespread unrest.
Fresh Consultations Underway
With Ayub no longer in office, opposition parties are now engaged in discussions to nominate a new leader. The speaker has initiated talks with opposition members, urging them to submit fresh nominations for the vacant posts.
PTI-backed independents, many of whom won in the February 2024 elections under the symbol of different parties, will also need to submit new names for key roles in the National Assembly. These nominations will determine the future balance of power in parliament, especially with budget sessions and policy debates on the horizon.
Implications for PTI’s Parliamentary Role
The loss of these top-tier positions marks a major institutional setback for PTI. While the party still maintains significant public support, its representation within the National Assembly has been weakened. The removal of committee memberships and leadership roles dilutes the party’s influence on legislative proceedings and policymaking.
Observers note that these developments could further isolate PTI in parliamentary politics, as other opposition groups seek to consolidate their standing. With a vacuum in leadership, internal reorganization within the PTI bloc will become crucial for the party’s continued relevance on the floor of the house.
Legal Challenges Ahead
PTI is likely to challenge the disqualifications in higher courts, arguing procedural and political bias. Legal experts suggest that the ECP’s action, backed by a court conviction, makes it difficult to overturn in the short term. However, the outcome of appeals may influence future parliamentary alignments.
The party also faces the challenge of selecting replacements who can rebuild political momentum while navigating a highly polarized legislative environment.
A Shift in the Opposition Landscape
This reshuffle not only affects PTI but alters the broader opposition dynamics in parliament. With Ayub, Gul, and Chattha sidelined, other opposition voices may rise to fill the gap. The coming days will be critical in determining whether PTI can recover lost ground or if a new opposition coalition will emerge from the political fallout.
