Jeff Bezos Mourns Death of Mother Jacklyn Bezos at 78

Jeff Bezos mourns mother Jacklyn Bezos, who died peacefully at her Miami home on Thursday at the age of 78, surrounded by loved ones after a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia. The Amazon founder shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram, describing his mother’s passing as the end of a life defined by love, resilience, and service.

A Peaceful Goodbye Surrounded by Family

Bezos wrote that his mother, known to many as Jackie, spent her final moments in the presence of her children, grandchildren, and her husband, Miguel “Mike” Bezos.

“After a long fight with Lewy Body Dementia, she passed away today, surrounded by so many of us who loved her,” Bezos wrote. “I know she felt our love in those final moments. I hold her safe in my heart forever.”

Her passing was also confirmed by the Bezos Scholars Program, which honored Jackie’s legacy of kindness, grit, and unwavering service to others.

Remembering a Life of Service and Family

The Bezos Scholars described Jackie as a woman who found joy in family gatherings, sharing traditions, and instilling values such as kindness and resilience.

“She passed down not only traditions and stories, but also her values — kindness, resilience, and the importance of togetherness,” their statement read.

Diagnosed in 2020, Jackie’s health battle was marked by the constant support of her husband Mike and a dedicated team of healthcare professionals.

Outpouring of Tributes

After news broke, tributes flooded in across social media. Lauren Sánchez, Bezos’ fiancée, posted a heartfelt picture of her late mother-in-law with a broken heart emoji. Friends and colleagues from the Bezos Scholars Program expressed their gratitude for Jackie’s mentorship and warmth.
One tribute read:

“The universe is a better place for having had her in it.”

Another added:

“The ripples she created will continue to magnify. How she touched so many lives.”

Early Life and Motherhood at 17

Born in 1946, Jacklyn Bezos became a mother at just 17, giving birth to Jeff with her first husband, Ted Jorgensen. The marriage ended when Jeff was 17 months old. She later married Miguel Bezos, a Cuban refugee who adopted Jeff as his own. The couple also had a son, Mark.

In 1995, Jacklyn and Miguel invested nearly $250,000 into Jeff’s then-fledgling online bookstore, Amazon — a bold move at a time when many were skeptical about the internet’s future.

The Risk That Changed Everything

At a 2015 event, Jeff Bezos recalled warning his parents about the potential failure of Amazon before accepting their investment.

“I want you to know how risky this is,” he said, “because I want to come home for Thanksgiving and not have you be mad at me.”

The gamble paid off, helping launch Amazon into the $2 trillion giant it is today, with Jeff Bezos becoming one of the world’s wealthiest individuals.

A Legacy Beyond Wealth

Jacklyn and Miguel’s contribution to Amazon’s early success was just one part of their legacy. Between 2001 and 2016, they donated nearly 600,000 Amazon shares to the Bezos Family Foundation, which supports education and leadership programs worldwide.

In 2022, Jeff helped his parents purchase a $34 million waterfront mansion in Miami, a gesture reflecting the deep gratitude he held for their sacrifices.

A Mother’s Unwavering Love

In his tribute, Bezos reflected on the challenges his mother faced as a teenage parent and the fierce devotion she poured into her role.

“She pounced on the job of loving me with ferocity,” he wrote. “For the rest of her life, that list of people to love never stopped growing. She always gave so much more than she ever asked for.”

Jacklyn Bezos leaves behind a legacy defined not by wealth but by the values she instilled in her family — resilience, kindness, and an unshakeable belief in supporting those you love.
