The Buccaneers vs Texans clash on Monday night produced one of the most dramatic endings of the young NFL season. With only six seconds left on the clock, running back Rachaad White powered into the end zone from two yards out to lift Tampa Bay to a 20-19 victory. The touchdown capped an 11-play, 80-yard drive orchestrated by quarterback Baker Mayfield.
The win extended Tampa Bay’s streak of 2-0 season starts to five consecutive years. More importantly, it showed the Buccaneers’ ability to close out tight games — something they had struggled with in recent seasons. “In these two-minute, close games, we were not on the right side of things for the past couple years,” Mayfield said afterward. “It’s good to see that we haven’t even played close to our best ball in all three phases and we’re still finding ways to win on the road.”

Mayfield’s Milestones and Leadership
Baker Mayfield delivered one of his most composed performances in a Buccaneers uniform. He completed 25 of 38 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns, posting a 98.0 passer rating with no interceptions. The veteran quarterback also surpassed the 25,000-career passing yard milestone during the contest and moved into the franchise’s top five for passing touchdowns with 74.

On the final scoring drive, Mayfield scrambled for a crucial fourth-and-10 conversion to keep Tampa Bay’s hopes alive. His poise, mobility and accuracy spearheaded the team’s comeback. For the second straight game against Houston, Mayfield engineered a game-winning drive, reaffirming his reputation for late-game moxie and improvisation.
White and Irving Power Ground Attack
Rachaad White shouldered the spotlight with his clutch touchdown, but his overall performance was equally impressive. He rushed 10 times for 65 yards, averaging 6.5 yards per carry — his fourth-highest mark in a game with 10-or-more carries. With his score, White tied Leonard Fournette and Reggie Cobb for the seventh-most touchdowns from scrimmage by a running back in Buccaneers history.
Rookie Bucky Irving complemented White with a breakout game of his own. Irving amassed 121 yards from scrimmage, rushing 17 times for 71 yards and catching six passes for 50 yards. His shifty moves and a 22-yard reception helped Tampa Bay maintain momentum. Irving now leads the 2024 draft class in total yards from scrimmage (1,680), rushing yards (1,230) and rushing touchdowns (eight).
Collectively, the Buccaneers rushed for over 100 yards for the league-leading 10th straight game. Dating back to the 2024 season, their 16 games of 100-plus rushing yards rank fourth-most in the NFL. While the Texans effectively defended the screen game, Tampa Bay adjusted, using creative schemes to free up playmakers and move the chains.
Defensive Impact from Tykee Smith
On defense, rookie Tykee Smith turned in a breakout performance. He recorded his first career sack against Houston quarterback C.J. Stroud, blasting off the edge and overpowering running back Dare Ogunbowale before dragging Stroud down for a nine-yard loss. Smith also notched multiple tackles for loss for the first time in his career and led the team with six total tackles.
According to league stats, Smith is one of only three defensive backs this season to post six-plus tackles, a sack and multiple tackles for loss in a single game — joining Brian Branch and Kam Curl. His disruptive play energized Tampa Bay’s defense, which held Houston under 20 points and stiffened in critical moments.
Texans Fall to 0-2; Chargers, Herbert Shine Elsewhere
For Houston, the defeat marked their second loss of the season following their opening-week setback against the Los Angeles Rams. Rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud showed flashes but struggled under pressure from Tampa Bay’s front seven.
In Monday’s other game, Justin Herbert led the Los Angeles Chargers to a 20-9 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. Herbert threw for 242 yards and two touchdowns — including a 60-yard strike to Quentin Johnston and a 10-yard score to Keenan Allen — as the Chargers improved to 2-0. The Raiders dropped to 1-1 after their Week One victory against the New England Patriots.
Statement Win Sets Tone for Tampa Bay
The Buccaneers vs Texans matchup underscored Tampa Bay’s evolution into a resilient contender. With Mayfield’s leadership, White’s power running, Irving’s versatility and Smith’s defensive emergence, the Buccaneers displayed balance across all three phases.
Tampa Bay now sits at 2-0 with confidence rising inside the locker room. If Monday night’s finish is any indication, the Buccaneers may finally have the formula to win close games and stay in the playoff hunt deep into the season.
