Delta State University Mourns Student Found Dead on Campus

Body of Demartravion “Trey” Reed Discovered on Campus

Delta State University staff found the body of 21-year-old student Demartravion “Trey” Reed hanging from a tree in the center of campus Monday morning. The discovery shocked the Cleveland, Mississippi, community and prompted university officials to cancel all centennial events for the 100-year-old institution.

“At approximately 7:05 am, University Police was notified of what appeared to be the body of a Black male hanging from a tree at central campus near the DSU pickleball course,” Chief of Police Michael Peeler told reporters. “We later identified the male subject to be Demartravion Reed of Grenada, Mississippi.”

The campus was closed for the day as police cordoned off the area. Students and staff gathered quietly nearby, leaving flowers and notes at makeshift memorials.

Police Say No Foul Play Suspected

At a press briefing Monday afternoon, Delta State University Police announced that no foul play is currently suspected in Reed’s death and no threat to campus exists. Chief Peeler stressed that an investigation is ongoing, with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation assisting.

“Delta State University is a beautiful place to be,” Peeler said. “It’s unfortunate, this loss that comes heavy to our campus. We want our students and community to know DSU is a safe campus.”

Deputy Coroner Murray Roark, who examined Reed’s body alongside Deputy Coroner Dwayne Proctor, said rumors circulating on social media about broken arms and legs were unfounded. “I saw no broken limbs,” Roark told the Mississippi Free Press. He declined to elaborate further, citing the ongoing investigation but added, “My opinion is that it was self-done, and I have reasons for that.”

University Officials Offer Condolences

Delta State University President Dr. Dan Ennis said he had personally spoken to Reed’s family to offer condolences. “I have spoken to Trey’s family, and expressed our heartbreak,” Ennis said. “Conversations with student leaders over prayer services are ongoing.”

Ennis reiterated that officials do not believe any threat to students or the broader community exists. He said normal operations were expected to resume soon, though the campus community remains in mourning.

Counseling services have been made available to students and staff affected by Reed’s death. University chaplains and local clergy have also joined efforts to provide support.

Centennial Events Cancelled Amid Mourning

The discovery came as Delta State University prepared to celebrate its centennial with a series of public events highlighting the school’s history and contributions to Mississippi. Those events have now been cancelled or postponed as students, staff and alumni process the tragedy.

Student groups have begun organizing vigils and remembrance services. Social media posts under the hashtag #RememberTrey show classmates sharing photos and stories of Reed, describing him as “bright,” “kind” and “always willing to help.”

Ongoing Investigation into Reed’s Death

Chief Peeler said a full autopsy is pending and further details will be released once results are available. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation continues to work with campus police to review evidence and witness statements.

Officials urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information about the case online. “We understand the shock and grief this causes,” Peeler said. “But sharing unconfirmed details can harm the investigation and the family’s privacy.”

Community Reflects on Safety and Support

Reed’s death has sparked conversations among students and faculty about mental health support and campus safety. Delta State University officials say they are reviewing existing programs and resources to ensure students know where to seek help.

“This loss is heavy to our campus,” Peeler said again at the close of Monday’s briefing. “We remain committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for everyone at Delta State University.”
