Abdul El-Sayed Makes History With Projected Michigan Senate Victory

Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has claimed victory in Michigan’s closely watched US Senate race, potentially becoming the first Muslim to serve in the United States Senate and marking a historic moment for Muslim representation in American politics.

El-Sayed defeated Republican candidate Mike Rogers in a contest that attracted national attention amid the 2026 US midterm elections. His victory declaration came as Democrats secured major gains across the country, including in several traditionally Republican states.

The Michigan contest has become one of the most closely followed races of the election, with its outcome carrying significance beyond the state’s political landscape.

First Muslim elected to the US Senate

At 42, the Michigan Democrat has made history by becoming the first Muslim American elected to the US Senate. His victory also represents an important milestone for Muslim representation in American public life.

A former public health official, he previously led the health departments of Wayne County and the city of Detroit. He first attracted wider political attention in 2018 when he unsuccessfully contested Michigan’s gubernatorial election.

His campaign focused heavily on the rising cost of living, healthcare affordability and reducing the influence of wealthy donors and corporations in American politics.

He advocated a single-payer healthcare system, commonly known as Medicare for All, arguing that access to medical treatment should not depend on a person’s financial circumstances.

Defeats Mike Rogers after a closely watched campaign

Republican Mike Rogers, a former congressman and FBI agent, entered the election with support from President Donald Trump and national Republican figures.

The contest attracted significant national attention because Michigan was considered an important battleground in the fight for Senate control.

Rogers sought to challenge his opponent’s progressive policies and questioned his positions on foreign policy, particularly regarding US military assistance to Israel.

The campaign also became contentious over religious identity, with the Democratic candidate facing criticism and anti-Muslim rhetoric from political opponents. He rejected allegations questioning his loyalty and argued that voters should focus on economic issues and his policy proposals.

Despite the divisions, he secured the support needed to win the election, according to the Associated Press projection.

Victory strengthens Democratic position in Washington

The Michigan result comes as Democrats celebrate victories across several states in the 2026 US midterm elections.

The party has secured control of both chambers of Congress, according to election projections, after defeating Republican candidates in several traditionally Republican states.

The Michigan victory also allows Democrats to retain a Senate seat previously held by retiring Senator Gary Peters.

His arrival in the Senate is expected to bring a progressive voice into national debates over healthcare, economic inequality, corporate influence and American foreign policy.

The outcome could also increase the visibility of Muslim Americans in US politics, particularly as the country continues to debate religious representation, immigration and civil rights.

His election marks a historic development in the Senate, while the broader Democratic gains are expected to influence the direction of American politics during the remaining years of Trump’s presidency.
