The Chiefs vs Seahawks matchup ended in a convincing 20-3 victory for the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night as Jaxon Smith-Njigba delivered a standout performance and Seattle’s defense dismantled Kansas City’s offense at Lumen Field. The defeat ended the Chiefs’ unbeaten start to the 2026 NFL season, while Seattle snapped a two-game losing streak.
Smith-Njigba recorded 150 receiving yards to lead Seattle’s passing attack, while quarterback Sam Darnold delivered an improved performance despite throwing an interception. The Seahawks also contained Kenneth Walker III, who entered the game among the NFL’s leading rushers after joining Kansas City from Seattle.
The Chiefs fell to 5-1, while the Seahawks improved to 4-3. Seattle also gained ground in the NFC West standings after the San Francisco 49ers lost earlier Sunday.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba Leads Seahawks’ Offensive Charge
Smith-Njigba proved the difference-maker for Seattle, repeatedly exploiting Kansas City’s secondary and giving Darnold a reliable target throughout the contest.
The receiver finished with 150 yards and continued an outstanding season in which he leads the NFL with 867 receiving yards and eight receiving touchdowns.
According to ESPN Research, Smith-Njigba became the first player in the Super Bowl era, dating back to 1966, to record at least 850 receiving yards and eight receiving touchdowns through his team’s first seven games of a season.
He collected 129 receiving yards in the first half alone, marking the highest first-half total of his NFL career. His performance helped Seattle maintain possession and sustain drives against a Kansas City defense that struggled to get off the field.
The Seahawks converted 11 of 16 third-down opportunities and accumulated 410 total yards. Smith-Njigba was the primary target in their passing attack, while no other Seattle receiver received double-digit targets.
Seattle’s ability to convert crucial third downs also limited Kansas City’s opportunities to build momentum and bring the contest back within reach.

Patrick Mahomes and Chiefs Offense Struggle
Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City’s offense endured a difficult evening against Seattle’s aggressive defense. The Chiefs never reached the red zone and failed to score a touchdown throughout the game.
Their best opportunity to generate points came when cornerback Nohl Williams intercepted Darnold in the final minute of the first half. Williams made a leaping catch on a pass intended for Rashid Shaheed in the back of the end zone and returned the interception 65 yards.
The play gave Kansas City a chance to score before halftime, but the Chiefs could not turn the opportunity into a touchdown. Their offense struggled to move the ball consistently, and kicker Harrison Butker missed his second field goal of the night.
Kansas City’s problems were particularly evident in the first half. Mahomes faced heavy pressure while playing without key offensive tackles Josh Simmons and Jaylon Moore, as well as wide receivers Rashee Rice and Tyquan Thornton.
The pressure disrupted the passing game and limited Kansas City’s ability to establish an offensive rhythm. The Chiefs finished the first half with only 37 passing yards, while Seattle continued to dictate the pace.
Kansas City’s offense never advanced beyond the Seattle 27-yard line, highlighting the extent of the Seahawks’ defensive dominance.
Seahawks Defense Continues Historic Rushing Streak
Seattle’s defense played a central role in the victory by shutting down Kenneth Walker III and restricting Kansas City’s overall production.
Walker entered the matchup after an impressive start to the season, having led the NFL with 665 rushing yards heading into the game. His return to face Seattle attracted considerable attention, particularly because he became the first Super Bowl MVP to play his former team the following season.
However, the Seahawks limited him to 36 yards on 14 carries. Seattle deployed a defensive approach featuring two deep safeties for much of the contest, preventing Walker from breaking free for a run of 10 yards or more.
The result extended Seattle’s streak to 36 consecutive games without allowing a 100-yard rusher, the longest such streak in the NFL.
Kansas City’s offensive struggles also reflected Seattle’s control of possession. By the middle of the third quarter, the Seahawks had possessed the ball roughly twice as long as the Chiefs and had run 51 plays compared with Kansas City’s 24.
The Chiefs struggled to stop Seattle on third downs, even when defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo called blitzes. Darnold frequently found Smith-Njigba in space, while Seattle’s quarterback escaped pressure when necessary.
The Seahawks also finished without allowing a sack on Darnold, who gained 17 rushing yards.
Sam Darnold Shows Improvement Despite Interception
Darnold completed 20 of 28 passes for 257 yards and a touchdown, helping Seattle maintain its advantage throughout the game.
He started strongly, completing 13 of his first 17 attempts for 178 yards and a touchdown in the first half. However, his interception to Williams prevented Seattle from potentially adding more points before halftime.
The turnover marked Darnold’s eighth interception over his previous five games, continuing concerns about his decision-making.
Nevertheless, he showed improvement by releasing the ball quickly, avoiding sacks and extending plays when necessary. His performance helped Seattle’s offense take a step forward after two consecutive defeats.
Smith-Njigba’s production gave Darnold a dependable option against Kansas City’s secondary, while the team’s third-down efficiency helped keep the offense moving.
Chiefs May Target Another Receiver Before Trade Deadline
Kansas City’s lack of production from its wide receivers could prompt general manager Brett Veach to explore potential additions before the November 10 NFL trade deadline.
Rice missed the game with a strained right hamstring, while Thornton remained on injured reserve after surgery to repair a dislocated left ankle.

Without those two players, Kansas City’s available receivers struggled to make an impact. Xavier Worthy, rookie Cyrus Allen, Justin Watson, Andrew Armstrong and Jalen Royals combined for only six receptions for 39 yards.
The lack of receiving production placed additional pressure on Mahomes and made it easier for Seattle to concentrate its defensive efforts on limiting the Chiefs’ passing attack.
Acquiring another receiver could help Kansas City strengthen its offense, particularly if Rice and Thornton remain unavailable.
Seahawks Look Ahead as Chiefs Prepare for Denver
The Chiefs vs Seahawks result gives Seattle renewed momentum as it prepares to face the Chicago Bears on November 2. The Seahawks will aim to build on their defensive performance while maintaining the offensive efficiency they showed against Kansas City.
The Chiefs must regroup quickly before visiting AFC West rival Denver next Sunday. Improving protection for Mahomes, generating more production from the receiving corps and converting scoring opportunities will be priorities after a frustrating defeat.
Seattle’s 20-3 victory demonstrated the value of a disciplined defense and an explosive receiving threat. Smith-Njigba delivered the offensive highlights, while the Seahawks’ defense prevented Kansas City from finding the end zone.
