Government Open to PTI’s Demands If They Provide Good Arguments

The political deadlock between the government and PTI continues, but Prime Minister’s aide Rana Sanaullah has stated that PTI’s demands could still be accepted—if they can present convincing arguments. His remarks come amid stalled negotiations over key political disputes.

Talks Remain Stalled Over Key Issues

After over a year of escalating tensions, the government and PTI initiated negotiations in December 2024 to ease the political crisis. However, discussions hit a standstill due to two major disagreements:

  1. Judicial commissions to investigate the May 9, 2023, and November 26, 2024, protests.
  2. Release of PTI prisoners held on political charges.

PTI recently boycotted the fourth round of talks, scheduled for January 28, following directives from party founder Imran Khan. The decision stemmed from frustration over delays in forming judicial commissions.

Government Prefers Parliamentary Committee Over Judicial Commission

On Thursday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif proposed forming a parliamentary committee to continue talks, instead of a judicial commission. However, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan rejected the offer, insisting on their original demands.

Speaking on Geo News, Rana Sanaullah defended the government’s stance, emphasizing that if PTI had joined the discussions, they might have found common ground.

“If PTI had sat with us on January 28, or even now, we could discuss this. We might convince them, or they might convince us,” he stated.

He also criticized PTI for avoiding meaningful negotiations. “After waiting ten years for dialogue, they abandoned it in just ten days,” he remarked.

Parliamentary Committee as a Fact-Finding Body

Explaining the government’s approach, Sanaullah clarified that judicial commissions do not conduct investigations.

“No inquiry commission can investigate. When an FIR is lodged, the police or institutions like the FIA handle investigations,” he explained.

Instead, a parliamentary committee could conduct fact-finding more effectively, as it consists of elected representatives.

PTI’s Past Stance on Election Rigging Investigations

Sanaullah also recalled PTI’s approach to election rigging allegations in 2018. At the time, Imran Khan proposed a parliamentary committee to examine election irregularities and improve election laws.

“The committee, led by Pervez Khattak, held just one meeting. Then for four years, they did nothing,” he pointed out.

KP Government’s Political and Economic Impact

Commenting on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s leadership, Sanaullah dismissed speculation that the government wanted a leadership change in the province.

“Ali Amin Gandapur is fine. If PTI replaces him, that’s their decision,” he said.

However, he criticized PTI’s governance in KP, blaming them for economic mismanagement and instability.

“The provincial government has damaged KP’s economy and security. PTI will pay for this politically,” he concluded.

Petrol, Diesel Prices to Increase in Pakistan Tonight

Islamabad: The federal government is expected to raise petrol prices by Rs1.24 per litre and diesel by Rs4.49 per litre, effective tonight for the next two weeks. The hike comes as a result of rising global petroleum product prices, mainly due to disruptions in shipping routes.

The international price increase is driven by disruptions in the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, which have caused a rise in the cost of US and African crude oil grades. According to sources, these global factors have directly impacted local pricing decisions.

New Petrol and Diesel Prices

According to industrial and official estimates, the price of petrol is likely to rise tonight to Rs257.37 per litre, an increase of Rs1.24 from the current price of Rs256.13. Diesel, on the other hand, is expected to be priced at Rs265.44 per litre, reflecting an increase of Rs4.49 per litre.

In addition to petrol and diesel, kerosene oil is anticipated to rise by Rs5.93 per litre, while Light Diesel Oil (LDO) may increase by Rs5.05 per litre.

This anticipated hike follows a recent increase on January 15, when the government raised petrol prices by Rs3.47 per litre. At the time, high-speed diesel (HSD) prices also saw an increase, rising from Rs258.34 to Rs260.95 per litre.

Dodi Khan Rejects Marriage Proposal from Rakhi Sawant

Karachi: Pakistani actor and businessman Dodi Khan has rejected the marriage proposal from Indian actress Rakhi Sawant. The actress had recently claimed in an interview that she received a marriage proposal from Pakistan and specifically mentioned Dodi Khan.

In an interview with Indian media, Rakhi Sawant claimed that she had received a marriage proposal from Pakistan. She mentioned Dodi Khan by name, stating that he was both an actor and a police officer from Pakistan. Rakhi shared that many people from Pakistan had proposed to her, but she chose Dodi Khan.

Rakhi said, “My fiancé’s name is Dodi Khan. He is an actor and a police officer. Many proposals have come from Pakistan, and he personally proposed to me, and I have chosen him.”

Dodi Khan’s Response

However, Dodi Khan has now rejected the marriage proposal from Rakhi Sawant, and a video of his response has gone viral on social media. In his video message, Dodi addressed both Pakistani and Indian people, explaining his reasons for declining Rakhi’s proposal.

In the video, Dodi Khan said, “A few days ago, you all saw a video of mine on social media where I proposed to Rakhi Sawant. The reason I proposed to her was that I know her well. When I got to know her better, I realized that she is a person who loves God a lot. She has gone through a lot of ups and downs in her life. She lost her parents, and she has faced many struggles.”

Admiration for Rakhi Sawant’s Journey

Dodi further elaborated on Rakhi Sawant’s life journey, saying, “Rakhi’s life has seen many twists and turns. A boy came into her life, and we all know what happened with him. She went through a lot of pain and suffering, but she came out of it. She embraced Islam, went for Umrah, and even changed her name to Fatima. I really admired this about her, which is why I proposed to her.”

He emphasized his deep respect for Rakhi’s personal transformation, stating that he appreciated her strength in facing difficulties and her spiritual journey.

Public Backlash and Rejection

Despite his admiration for Rakhi, Dodi Khan revealed that the public’s reaction to his proposal had not been positive. He mentioned that he received numerous messages and videos, and the backlash was overwhelming.

Dodi said, “I feel that my proposal was not acceptable to the people, and I have received many messages and videos that I could not bear.” He expressed his discomfort with the negative response, which led to his decision to withdraw from his previous statement.

Dodi Khan’s Final Decision

In the concluding part of his video message, Dodi Khan stated, “Rakhi, you are a very good friend of mine, and you will always remain my friend. You may not become my bride, but I promise you that you will become the daughter-in-law of Pakistan. I will arrange your marriage to one of my brothers.”

His statement reflected his ongoing respect for Rakhi as a friend, despite rejecting the idea of marriage. He expressed his willingness to help her find a suitable match from within his own family.

Public Reactions and Criticism

Following Dodi Khan’s video, social media erupted with various reactions from users. While some supported his decision, others criticized him for his handling of the situation. Many users expressed disappointment with Dodi’s response, feeling that he should have either committed to the relationship or handled the matter privately.

Critics pointed out that Dodi’s public rejection and subsequent comments about Rakhi being married off to one of his brothers might have come off as insensitive and dismissive. They argued that he should have shown more respect toward Rakhi and handled the matter with more tact.

Others, however, praised Dodi for his honesty and willingness to clarify the situation publicly. Some users appreciated his acknowledgment of Rakhi’s life struggles and his admiration for her personal growth.

Impact on Dodi Khan’s Image

Dodi Khan’s decision to publicly reject Rakhi Sawant’s marriage proposal has sparked debates across social media platforms. While it has made headlines, it has also raised questions about how celebrities handle personal relationships in the public eye. The incident also highlights the ongoing attention that Rakhi Sawant’s personal life continues to attract, both in India and Pakistan.

While Dodi Khan’s rejection of Rakhi Sawant’s marriage proposal has attracted mixed reactions, it also underscores the complexities of celebrity relationships and the pressures they face from both public opinion and media scrutiny.

PSX Sees 1,000-Point Surge as Bulls Dominate Trading Floor

Karachi: The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) witnessed a strong bullish rally on Friday, with the benchmark KSE-100 index climbing 1,000 points in intraday trading.

At 4:12 PM, the KSE-100 index surged by 1,096.00 points, or 0.97%, reaching 114,302.40, up from the previous day’s close of 113,206.40. The upward momentum reflected a strong recovery following the market correction in the previous month.

Market Recovery Following Correction

Yousuf M. Farooq, director of research at Chase Securities, noted that the market had begun to recover after last month’s downturn. He highlighted that the market’s current performance is a positive sign for investor sentiment.

Farooq also pointed to the decline in the year-on-year Sensitive Price Index (SPI) to just 0.44% and the anticipated drop in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) below 3%. This, he argued, opens up the possibility of single-digit interest rates by 2025, which could further stimulate market growth.

Risks to Economic Recovery

Despite the positive outlook, Farooq cautioned that risks remain. A sharp rise in imports or excessive government spending could strain the external account and undermine the stock market’s recovery. “All eyes are now on the next IMF review in March,” he added, highlighting the importance of the upcoming negotiations in shaping the economic trajectory.

Speculation and Investor Confidence

The recent market rally followed a three-day losing streak. Analysts attributed the bullish trend to speculative trading in anticipation of the upcoming earning season and major corporate announcements. There was also optimism surrounding IMF proposals to ease the gas circular debt issue and the commitments from the recent US investor delegation, which helped boost investor confidence in the market.

Overall, the PSX’s recovery is seen as a sign of growing market optimism, although experts remain cautious about potential risks that could affect the economy and the stock market in the coming months.

Passenger Plane, Military Helicopter Collision Near Washington Airport

Washington: A tragic accident occurred near Ronald Reagan Airport when a passenger plane collided with a military helicopter, resulting in the deaths of all 67 people on board.

According to U.S. media reports, the crash took place near Washington’s Ronald Reagan Airport. All 67 passengers and crew members aboard the plane and helicopter lost their lives. The incident has raised concerns about the safety and communication protocols at the airport.

Reports reveal that the air traffic control tower at Ronald Reagan Airport was understaffed. Instead of two controllers, only one was managing operations. This staffing shortage had reportedly caused delays and issues with air traffic management.

One day before the accident, another flight had to be rerouted due to air traffic control issues. These staffing problems are now under scrutiny after the collision.

Pilot’s Last-Minute Instructions

According to reports, the passenger plane’s pilot was instructed at the last moment to change the runway. Following this guidance, the pilot altered the plane’s course. However, this sudden change may have contributed to the fatal collision.

Thirty seconds before the crash, the helicopter was advised to wait for the passenger plane to pass. However, the helicopter did not respond, and the collision occurred. It was later confirmed that the helicopter involved was a training aircraft.

Investigations have found the black boxes from both the passenger plane and the military helicopter. These devices will provide crucial information to help understand the causes of the crash.

Concerns About Training Helicopters

The involvement of a training helicopter in the accident has raised questions about the permission granted for such flights near a busy airport. Many are questioning the safety protocols regarding the flight paths of military training helicopters in areas close to major airports.

Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya: The Legacy of Love, Tolerance, and Service

The Chishti Order holds a central place in the history of Sufism. It is built on the principles of love, tolerance, and service to humanity. One of the most revered figures of this order is Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya (RA). He is known as “Mahbub-e-Ilahi” (Beloved of God) and “Sultan-ul-Mashaikh” (King of Saints). He played a key role in spreading Islam in India and transformed the Chishti Order into a global movement. This article explores his life, contributions to Islam, the popularity of the Chishti Nizami order, and his spiritual miracles.

Early Life and Education

Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya (RA) was born in 1238 CE in Badaun (present-day Uttar Pradesh, India). The saint’s lineage traces back to Imam Hussain (RA). His father, Syed Ahmad Bukhari, and mother, Bibi Zulekha, belonged to a family of pious scholars. His father passed away when he was just five years old. His mother, a woman of deep faith and patience, raised him with great care.

He received his early education in Badaun and later moved to Delhi for advanced studies. Under the guidance of renowned scholars like Maulana Shamsuddin Khwarizmi, he mastered Islamic jurisprudence, Hadith, and literature.

The Spiritual Journey Begins

At the age of 20, he met Hazrat Baba Fariduddin Ganj Shakar (RA), the third great saint of the Chishti Order. Baba Farid (RA) was deeply impressed by Nizamuddin’s spiritual inclination and granted him discipleship and spiritual authority (Khilafat).

He established his Sufi center (Khanqah) in Ghiyaspur, Delhi. This Khanqah became a sanctuary for the poverty-stricken, travelers, and seekers of truth. Thousands of people received free meals daily, a practice known as “Langar-e-Nizami.” He avoided royal courts and once famously said, “My court lies in the hearts of the poverty-stricken.”

Contributions to Islam

1. Social Justice and Equality

Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya (RA) believed in serving humanity. He taught that “the true servants of Allah are those who serve His creation.” He treated people of all religions with kindness. A famous incident tells of a Hindu man who constantly insulted him. When that man fell sick, Nizamuddin Auliya (RA) visited him and prayed for his recovery. The man was cured, and this act of compassion left a lasting impression.

2. Spiritual and Intellectual Teachings

He combined Quranic teachings with deep spirituality. His disciple, Hazrat Nasiruddin Chiragh Dehlvi (RA), wrote, “Sitting in his company was like diving into an ocean of wisdom.” His teachings are preserved in books like “Fawaid-ul-Fuad” and “Rahat-ul-Muhibbeen,” which continue to guide Sufi seekers today.

3. Cultural Influence

His famous disciple, Hazrat Amir Khusro (RA), merged Persian and Indian music to create Qawwali, a Sufi musical tradition. Amir Khusro lovingly called him “Sultan-ul-Mashaikh” and wrote numerous poems in his honor.

Interfaith Harmony

Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya (RA) never used force in spreading Islam. His shrine continues to attract visitors from all faiths, including Hindus, Sikhs, and Christians. His life exemplifies that love is the universal language that unites people beyond religious divides.

Chishti Nizami Order: Global Expansion and Prominent Figures

He transformed the Chishti Order into a widespread movement. His disciples spread the message across South Asia and beyond. Notable figures in this order include:

  • Hazrat Nasiruddin Chiragh Dehlvi (RA): His successor who strengthened the order in Delhi.
  • Hazrat Amir Khusro (RA): A poet and Sufi who shaped Indian culture.
  • Hazrat Burhanuddin Gharib (RA): He carried the teachings to Deccan (modern Hyderabad).
  • Hazrat Aqi Siraj Aina-e-Hind (RA): He preached in Bengal.

In Pakistan, spiritual centers in Golra Sharif, Sial Sharif, and Taunsa Sharif continue his legacy. In India, Ajmer Sharif and his own shrine in Delhi remain major pilgrimage sites.

Miracles of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya (RA)

1. The Miracle of Food

Once, there were only 50 loaves of bread in his Khanqah, but thousands of people arrived for a meal. The loaves never ran out, and by the end, extra bread remained.

2. Forgiving an Enemy

A man who frequently insulted him passed away. Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya (RA) visited his grave and prayed, “O Allah, do not punish him because of me.” It is said that a beautiful fragrance started emanating from the grave.

3. Controlling Fire

A massive fire broke out in Ghiyaspur. He instructed his followers to distribute bread and water among the affected people. As soon as they followed his command, the fire miraculously extinguished.

Passing and Lasting Legacy

Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya (RA) passed away on April 3, 1325 CE. His shrine in Delhi remains a center of spiritual devotion. Every year, thousands of devotees gather to celebrate his Urs (death anniversary) with Qawwali performances, a tradition started by Hazrat Amir Khusro (RA).

He did not confine Sufism to personal spirituality. He used it as a tool for social justice, education, and cultural unity. His teachings remain relevant in today’s world, where division, prejudice, and materialism dominate.

The Chishti Nizami Order continues to spread his message: “Love is the path that leads to God.” This message still touches the hearts of millions worldwide.

Samsung Expands Cobalt Recycling for Galaxy Batteries

Samsung Electronics has launched a Circular Battery Supply Chain to recover and reuse cobalt from old Galaxy batteries. This initiative aims to make battery production more sustainable and reduce reliance on newly mined cobalt.

The company’s Galaxy S24 series was the first to include recycled cobalt. Now, the upcoming Galaxy S25.1 will take this further by using 50% cobalt sourced from recycled devices, Samsung announced.

How the Circular Battery Supply Chain Works

Samsung is implementing a multi-phase process to recover cobalt from used Galaxy batteries.

While Samsung did not disclose the names of its recycling partners, it emphasized collaboration with like-minded companies to expand this initiative.

Read: iOS 18.3 Adds Starlink Satellite Messaging for T-Mobile Users

Why Samsung Is Focused on Cobalt Recycling

Cobalt is a crucial material in lithium-ion batteries, but its extraction raises significant ethical and environmental concerns.  Additionally, the high cost of cobalt makes recycling an economically viable alternative.

By expanding the use of recycled cobalt, Samsung aims to reduce its dependence on newly mined materials, lower production costs, and minimize its environmental impact.

Future of Recycled Cobalt in Samsung Devices

Samsung confirmed that its commitment to cobalt recycling will not stop with the Galaxy S25.1. The company plans to integrate recycled cobalt batteries into more products within its ecosystem, reinforcing its long-term sustainability goals.

This move aligns with the broader tech industry’s shift toward circularity, where materials are continually reused rather than discarded. By scaling up its Circular Battery Supply Chain, Samsung is setting a precedent for more responsible battery production in the future.

No Captain’s Event Before Champions Trophy 2025

The Champions Trophy 2025 will begin in Pakistan without the traditional captains’ press conference and photoshoot. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) cited logistical challenges as the reason, as teams are arriving close to the tournament’s start. Instead, the PCB will host an official launch event in Lahore on February 16, just three days before the opening match.

No Formal ICC Captains’ Event

Unlike previous ICC tournaments, this edition of the Champions Trophy will not feature an official captains’ meet or photoshoot. The PCB explained that with the tournament being played across multiple venues in two countries, it was difficult to coordinate schedules. Australia, for example, will not arrive in Pakistan until February 19, the day of their first match.

While the last Champions Trophy in 2017 did not have an opening ceremony, it still included a captains’ event and photoshoot. This time, however, there was no official ICC announcement regarding such an event. The PCB’s February 16 gathering in Lahore will serve as the tournament’s official launch, with ICC officials expected to attend.

Read: Pakistan Yet to Announce Squad for Champions Trophy 2025

India’s Hybrid Model and Political Tensions

The absence of a captains’ event also means that India captain Rohit Sharma will not need to travel to Pakistan.

Due to political tensions, India and Pakistan have not played a bilateral series since 2012. While Pakistan has traveled to India for ICC tournaments, India has not played in Pakistan since 2008. To address this issue, the Champions Trophy will follow a hybrid model, with India’s matches, including the final if they qualify, being held in Dubai. This model will also apply to future ICC events in India until 2027, allowing Pakistan to play its matches at neutral venues.

ICC’s Alternative Approaches

This is not the first time the ICC has skipped a captains’ event. The 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup, held in the Caribbean and the USA, also did not have a traditional photoshoot. Instead, the ICC used a lighting projection show in New York City, featuring images of the 20 captains on the Rockefeller Center building.

Revamped Stadiums in Pakistan

Ahead of the Champions Trophy, Pakistan has refurbished major stadiums. The Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore will be officially inaugurated on February 7 by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. The venue will host its first international game since reconstruction on February 8, an ODI between Pakistan, South Africa, and New Zealand.

Similarly, the National Stadium in Karachi will be reopened by President Asif Ali Zardari on February 11. These upgrades reflect Pakistan’s commitment to hosting international cricket at the highest level.

With no traditional captains’ event, the focus now shifts to Lahore’s February 16 ceremony and the on-field action as teams prepare for the Champions Trophy’s much-anticipated return.

Israel Releases Palestinian Prisoners, Death of Mohammed Deif

In a major prisoner exchange, Israel has released 110 Palestinian prisoners, following the return of eight hostages from Gaza, including three Israelis and five Thai nationals. Meanwhile, Hamas has confirmed the death of its top military commander, Mohammed Deif, who Israel claims was killed in July.

Freed Prisoners Arrive in Gaza

At least 20 of the released Palestinian prisoners have arrived in Khan Younis, southern Gaza. They are undergoing medical checks at the European Hospital before reuniting with their families.

Families eagerly wait outside, some singing traditional songs and others dressed in cultural attire. Many have waited for years, even decades, for these moments. Mothers, sons, and spouses stand in anticipation, overwhelmed with emotion and relief.

Palestinian Perspective: Thousands Still Imprisoned

Despite this release, more than 10,000 Palestinians remain in Israeli prisons. According to political analyst Xavier Abu Eid, only 750 prisoners will be freed under the current ceasefire deal. He emphasized that over 1,000 detainees from Gaza, arrested after October 7, had no charges against them.

“This reflects a larger reality,” he said. “An entire nation is caged under Israeli occupation.”

Emotional Reunions After Decades in Prison

One of the released prisoners, Mohammed al-Burai, was arrested 30 years ago. His son, who was just two years old at the time, now waits to meet his father as a 32-year-old man with a child of his own.

“I never imagined this day would come,” he said outside the hospital. “I just want to embrace my father.”

Tensions in the West Bank: Israeli Soldier Killed in Jenin

As prisoners were being freed, clashes erupted in the occupied West Bank. Reports confirm that an Israeli soldier was killed and five others wounded during a gunfight with Palestinian fighters in Jenin. The fallen soldier was identified as 20-year-old Liam Hazi from the Kfir Brigade’s Haruv reconnaissance unit.

Hamas Confirms Death of Mohammed Deif

Hamas’ Qassam Brigades spokesperson, Abu Obaida, officially confirmed the death of Mohammed Deif, the group’s military commander.

“Deif exhausted the enemy for over 30 years,” Obaida stated. “He is now a martyr.”

Other Hamas Commanders Killed

Abu Obaida also confirmed the deaths of other senior Hamas figures, including:

  • Ghazi Abu Tamaa – Commander of weapons and combat services
  • Raed Thabet – Head of manpower and supplies
  • Rafei Salama – Commander of the Khan Younis Brigade

UNRWA Faces Israeli Ban Amid Crisis

Despite Israel’s ban on the UN Palestinian relief agency (UNRWA), its clinics remain open in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. UNRWA warned that restrictions on its operations will have serious humanitarian consequences for thousands of Palestinians.

As events unfold, the situation remains tense, with ongoing clashes, humanitarian concerns, and continued prisoner exchanges shaping the conflict.

Microsoft Cloud Growth Disappoints, AI Competition Looms

Redmond, Washington: Microsoft’s stock fell 4.5% in after-hours trading on Wednesday after the company forecast slower growth in its cloud computing business, raising concerns about AI monetization, rising costs, and competition from cheaper Chinese AI models.

Despite beating overall revenue estimates, Microsoft’s Azure cloud division reported 31% revenue growth, missing Wall Street’s expectation of 31.8%. The company expects 31-32% growth in the next quarter, below the 33% analysts predicted, according to Visible Alpha data.

Investors are increasingly frustrated that Microsoft and other tech giants are spending billions on AI infrastructure but have yet to show significant financial returns.

Chinese AI Competition Sparks Price War Concerns

Chinese firms have recently launched AI models at lower costs, increasing pressure on U.S. tech giants. DeepSeek, a rising AI model from China, has gained attention and forced Microsoft to include it in Azure’s offerings.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella acknowledged competition but emphasized efficiency:

“As AI becomes more efficient and accessible, we will see exponentially more demand.”

Nadella also noted that Microsoft is optimizing AI models to lower costs, similar to previous GPT model pricing reductions in collaboration with OpenAI.

KSE-100 Index Rebounds, Gains Over 1,700 Points on Strong Buying

Heavy AI Investments Continue

Microsoft spent $22.6 billion on capital expenditures, exceeding analysts’ estimates of $20.95 billion. The company is building AI data centers to support its growing AI ambitions.

Microsoft remains a top AI player, but its stock has gained only 8% this year, trailing Alphabet’s 29% and Amazon’s 50% surge.

Revenue and Profits Beat Estimates

  • Intelligent Cloud revenue: $25.54 billion (missed $25.76 billion expectations).
  • Total revenue: $69.6 billion, beating estimates of $68.78 billion.
  • Earnings per share: $3.23, exceeding expectations of $3.11.

Big AI Contracts with OpenAI Drive Growth

Microsoft reported 67% growth in commercial bookings, driven by major Azure contracts with OpenAI. Despite OpenAI’s recent deal with Oracle, Microsoft remains the primary host for OpenAI’s commercial models.

Investors now seek clearer AI revenue strategies as Microsoft navigates rising costs, AI competition, and cloud market challenges.

Global Arabica Coffee Prices Hit Record High Amid Supply Concerns

New York: Arabica coffee prices soared above $3.60 per pound on Wednesday, reaching a record high as Brazil, the world’s largest producer, faces limited supplies and uncertainty over its upcoming harvest.

Dealers report that 70-80% of Brazil’s current arabica harvest has already been sold, slowing down new trades. Brazil produces nearly half the world’s arabica beans, a premium variety used in roast and ground coffee.

Weather Improves, But Output Declines

While recent weather conditions in Brazil have improved after last year’s severe drought, the 2025 arabica crop is expected to be 4.4% smaller than the previous season, according to Brazil’s food supply agency, Conab.

Slow Sales from Other Key Producers

Coffee supplies remain tight globally, with Vietnam, the world’s top robusta producer, progressing slowly in sales. Central American and Colombian arabica exports are also delayed, while Brazilian farmers are reluctant to sell more beans.

Record Highs for Coffee Futures

On the ICE exchange, arabica coffee futures hit a record $3.6945 per pound, gaining nearly 15% this year. The contract closed 2.5% higher at $3.6655 per pound.

Meanwhile, robusta coffee prices climbed 0.9% to $5,609 per metric ton as Indian coffee exports are expected to fall over 10% in 2025 due to lower production and reduced stocks.

Brazilian Farmers Favor Local Sales

Farmers in Brazil, India, and Vietnam are holding back sales, expecting further price increases. In Brazil, 80-90% of the current harvest has been sold, but farmers are prioritizing local sales over dollar-priced exports due to stronger financial positions.

Sucden, a global commodities broker, estimates Brazil’s buffer stocks have fallen to 500,000 bags, far below the traditional 8 million bags. Any further weather disruptions could significantly impact global coffee prices.

Coffee Market Faces Fourth Consecutive Deficit

Sucden predicts the global coffee market will record a fourth consecutive deficit this season, keeping supply tight and prices high.

Other Soft Commodities Gain

  • Raw sugar rose 1.1% to 19.45 cents per pound, recovering from last week’s five-month low.
  • White sugar climbed 2.2% to $522.90 per ton.
  • New York cocoa surged 3.3% to $11,745 per ton, while London cocoa rose 1.6% to 9,138 pounds per ton.

FED Proposals Sent to PM Shehbaz Sharif

Proposals to impose FED per kilogram of sugar have been forwarded to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The government is also reviewing changes to the sales tax mechanism on sugar.

Gold and Silver Rates in Pakistan on 30th January

The Minister of State for Finance, FBR Chairman, and Finance Ministry Secretary have drafted recommendations, which include a fixed sales tax regime for structured tax collection.

Possible Price Hike for Consumers

Officials suggest an excise duty of Rs 3 to Rs 4 per kg, which could raise sugar prices and burden ordinary consumers. The final decision rests with the Prime Minister’s Office.

No Immediate Decision on FED

Minister of State for Finance Ali Pervaiz denied reports of an immediate FED imposition. He clarified that while tax revisions are under review, no final decision has been made yet.

Fuel Prices Expected to Rise in Early February

Consumers should prepare for a possible fuel price hike in the first half of February. Industry sources indicate that petrol, high-speed diesel (HSD), kerosene oil, and light diesel oil may see price increases due to refining costs and government-imposed taxes.

Projected Price Increases

According to market estimates, petrol prices may rise by Rs1.24 per liter, bringing the cost from Rs173.55 to Rs174.79 per liter. HSD is expected to see the highest jump, increasing by Rs4.49 per liter, from Rs182.26 to Rs186.75 per liter.

Kerosene oil prices may climb by Rs5.93 per liter, reaching Rs164.76 per liter from the current Rs158.83. Similarly, light diesel oil (LDO) could rise by Rs5.05 per liter, increasing from Rs151.68 to Rs156.73 per liter.

Impact on Depot Prices

The refinery price hike will likely influence ex-depot rates, which determine the final retail cost for consumers. Petrol depot prices may increase from Rs256.13 to Rs257.37 per liter, while diesel could climb from Rs260.95 to Rs265.44 per liter.

Kerosene oil may see a rise from Rs169.25 to Rs175.18 per liter, while light diesel could go up from Rs156.53 to Rs161.58 per liter. These adjustments will affect fuel stations and transportation networks across the country.

Key Factors Behind the Price Hike

Several elements contribute to this expected increase:

  • Refining Costs: Higher production costs at refineries are pushing prices upward.
  • Government Taxes: Fuel prices include various levies and duties that impact final rates.
  • Inland Freight Equalization Margin (IFEM): This cost accounts for fuel transportation across different regions, influencing depot prices.
  • International Premium on Petrol (PMG): The estimated premium stands at $8.84 per barrel for imported petrol, further contributing to the price surge.

Awaiting Final Confirmation

The government will confirm the final rates after reviewing one remaining day of Platts data and making necessary adjustments. Any fluctuations in the exchange rate could also impact the final pricing.

If implemented, these price hikes could increase transportation costs, affect household budgets, and contribute to inflation, making daily essentials more expensive.

Shell Q4 Profit Drops Amid Lower Refining Margins, LNG Trading Woes

London: Shell reported a sharp drop in fourth-quarter profits, missing analyst estimates due to weak refining margins and LNG trading challenges. However, the energy giant announced a $3.5 billion share buyback and a 4% dividend increase, aiming to reassure investors.

Profit Misses Expectations

Shell’s adjusted earnings (net profit) for Q4 2024 stood at $3.66 billion, a significant drop from $7.31 billion in the same period last year. Analysts polled by Vara Research had expected $4.09 billion.

For the full year, Shell’s profit fell 16% to $23.72 billion, reflecting a broader industry trend of declining oil and gas earnings after record highs in 2022-23.

Refining Struggles & LNG Disputes

  • Shell’s refining division posted a $229 million loss, compared to a $29 million profit a year ago.
  • Global refining margins weakened due to lower economic activity and new refineries in Asia and Africa.
  • Refinery utilization was 76% in Q4, with plans to increase it to 80-88% in Q1 2025.
  • LNG supply disputes with Venture Global continue, with no set timeline for arbitration. Shell, BP, and Edison are contesting missed contracted cargoes from Venture Global’s Calcasieu Pass facility, forcing them to buy expensive spot cargoes instead.

CEO Faces Pressure as Strategy Shifts

CEO Wael Sawan has been cutting costs and refocusing on core oil, gas, and biofuels, moving away from renewables. Shell also plans to reduce capital expenditure below 2024’s $21 billion, with further details expected at March’s capital markets day.

Market Reaction

  • Shell’s stock rose 0.25% in morning trading, in line with the FTSE 100 index.
  • Investors remain cautious as oil demand weakens and energy prices stabilize.

Shell’s strategic shift, cost-cutting measures, and investor returns will be closely watched as the company navigates a turbulent energy market in 2025.

Pakistan Yet to Announce Squad for Champions Trophy 2025

With only 20 days left until the Champions Trophy 2025, Pakistan remains the only team yet to announce its squad. All other participating teams have finalized their selections, but the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is facing delays due to uncertainty surrounding Saim Ayub’s injury.

Delay Caused by Saim Ayub’s Injury

According to a report by Cricket Pakistan, young opener Saim Ayub suffered an ankle fracture during the second Test against South Africa in Cape Town earlier this month. He, along with assistant coach Azhar Mahmood, traveled to London for treatment. The PCB is waiting for medical confirmation on Ayub’s recovery before making final squad decisions.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi recently addressed the situation, stating that the board is prioritizing Ayub’s long-term fitness over a rushed return. “We cannot put Saim Ayub’s career at risk for the Champions Trophy. His plaster will be removed soon, and he is undergoing rehabilitation,” Naqvi told reporters.

Pakistan’s Opening Pair in Doubt

Former cricketer Rashid Latif expressed concerns about Pakistan’s top-order stability. He highlighted that with Saim Ayub injured and Abdullah Shafique out of form, Pakistan faces uncertainty in the opening slot.

“I am worried about Ayub’s injury. If he is unavailable and Shafique continues struggling, Pakistan might face serious problems at the top,” Latif stated.

PCB’s Careful Approach

The PCB is deliberately taking time to assess all available options before making an official announcement. The selectors want to ensure they have a balanced and competitive squad for the tournament.

Despite the delay, fans are eagerly waiting for the official squad list. With the Champions Trophy marking Pakistan’s first ICC event at home since the 1996 World Cup, expectations are high.

Tournament Kickoff in Karachi

The Champions Trophy 2025 will start on February 19, with Pakistan facing New Zealand in the opening match at National Stadium, Karachi. The tournament will be co-hosted by Pakistan and Dubai, making it a historic event for cricket in the country.

While the squad announcement is pending, Pakistan’s cricketing future depends on crucial selection decisions in the coming days.

Major Martyred, Six Terrorists Killed in North Waziristan Operation

Terrorist hideouts in North Waziristan faced a decisive blow as security forces launched an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in the Mir Ali area. During the intense firefight, six terrorists were eliminated, but the operation came at a heavy cost. A Pakistani Army major and a soldier embraced martyrdom while leading the mission, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

Clash in Mir Ali

The operation took place on the night of January 29-30, targeting a suspected terrorist hideout. Pakistani forces swiftly engaged the militants, neutralizing six terrorists. However, the battle resulted in the loss of Major Hamza Israr, 29, from Rawalpindi, and Sepoy Muhammad Naeem, 26, from Naseerabad.

Major Hamza was leading his team when he made the ultimate sacrifice. Both soldiers displayed exceptional courage, fighting until their last breath to protect the nation.

Post-Operation Sanitization

After the encounter, security forces launched a sanitization operation to ensure the area is cleared of any remaining threats. Authorities have pledged to continue their counterterrorism efforts, leaving no room for militants to regroup.

“The Pakistan Army remains steadfast in its mission to eliminate terrorism,” ISPR stated, reaffirming its commitment to national security.

Nation Honors the Fallen Heroes

President Asif Ali Zardari paid tribute to the martyred soldiers, praising their bravery and sacrifice. He commended security forces for their successful operation, vowing that Pakistan will continue its fight until terrorism is eradicated.

“Our forces will never back down in the face of terror,” the president stated. “We will defend our land at all costs.”

Recent Counterterrorism Successes

The Mir Ali operation follows another successful counterterrorism mission in Balochistan. Just a day earlier, security forces foiled a terrorist attack on a security post in Qila Abdullah’s Gulistan area. The attackers attempted to breach the perimeter using an explosive-laden vehicle after an initial assault was repelled. However, security personnel successfully neutralized the threat.

Ongoing Efforts to Secure the Nation

The Pakistan Army remains vigilant, conducting continuous operations against terrorist networks. The sacrifices of Major Hamza and Sepoy Naeem serve as a reminder of the relentless dedication of Pakistan’s armed forces.

Authorities have reaffirmed their zero-tolerance policy against terrorism, ensuring that those who threaten national security will face swift action.
