PTA Blames Submarine Cable for Slow Internet Amid Firewall Controversy

Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) has responded to significant criticism over recent internet disruptions, linking the issue to a “fault in the undersea submarine cable.” PTA Chairman Major General (retd) Hafeez-Ur-Rehman provided this explanation after receiving intense backlash from netizens and IT sector bodies.

During a briefing to the National Assembly Standing Committee on IT, PTA Chairman Rehman explained that the internet problems stem from damage to one of the seven submarine cables connected to Pakistan. “The Submarine Consortium has informed us that the internet services are affected due to a fault in the submarine cable,” Rehman said. He assured that technicians expect to resolve the problem by August 27.

This statement aims to address concerns about recent internet slowdowns and connectivity issues. Many experts and stakeholders had previously attributed these problems to the government’s alleged testing of a new internet firewall, which they believed was interfering with social media access by blocking unwanted content.

Industry Criticism and Economic Impact

The internet disruptions have drawn sharp criticism from various IT sector organizations, including the Wireless and Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan (WISPAP) and the Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA). These groups have condemned the government’s handling of the situation, citing severe economic impacts on freelancers, IT professionals, and the broader digital economy.

P@SHA estimated that the disruptions have resulted in a $300 million loss, highlighting the significant strain on businesses and individuals who rely on stable internet connectivity. WISPAP Chairman Shahzad Arshad emphasized that the slowdown threatens the survival of many businesses, which depend on reliable internet services to operate effectively.

Government’s Denial and Firewall Explanation

In response to the criticism, the government has denied any involvement in the internet disruptions. State Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khawaja attributed the slowdown to the use of virtual private networks (VPNs) by internet users. “I can swear that the government of Pakistan did not block the internet or slow it down,” Khawaja stated during a media briefing last week.

The issue of the internet firewall also came up during the standing committee’s meeting. Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) lawmaker Amin Ul Haq questioned the PTA chairman about the reasons behind the disruptions. He urged the PTA to inform the public about whether a firewall had been installed and to communicate the matter more clearly.

In response, Gen Rehman referred to Khawaja’s remarks and reiterated that the problems were due to VPN use. He elaborated on the firewall issue, explaining that the PTA had replaced the previous web management system (WMS) with a new firewall technology after its approval in March 2019. “The [internet] firewall system was approved in March 2019,” Rehman said, noting that the upgrade had begun the same year.

Historical Context and Political Reactions

When questioned by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s National Assembly Opposition Leader Omar Ayub about the firewall installation, Rehman clarified that the system was introduced during the previous government’s tenure. “This system was introduced during your regime,” he said, deflecting criticism towards the former administration.

As the PTA addresses the ongoing internet issues, it remains to be seen how the resolution of the submarine cable fault and the public’s reaction to the firewall implementation will unfold. The situation highlights the complex interplay between technology, government policies, and the needs of the digital economy.

Tragic Bus Accident in Iran Claims 35 Pakistani Pilgrims’ Lives, 15 Injured

At least 35 Pakistani pilgrims lost their lives, and 15 others were seriously injured in a tragic bus accident in Yazd, Iran. The unfortunate incident occurred when a bus carrying the pilgrims overturned and caught fire near the Taftan-Dehshir checkpoint. This accident happened around 700 kilometers from the Pakistani embassy in Tehran.

Pakistan’s Ambassador to Iran, Mudassir Tipu, confirmed the heartbreaking news on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. He reported that 28 pilgrims died in the accident, and the remaining 23 passengers were injured. He also mentioned that embassy officials had already left for Yazd to assist in the emergency response, and an officer in Zahedan was overseeing the necessary arrangements.

According to Iranian media, the accident was likely caused by overspeeding and brake failure. The bus, which had 53 passengers on board, crashed into a school wall before catching fire. The crash happened late at night, and rescue workers quickly arrived at the scene to transport the injured and the deceased to nearby hospitals.

Maulana Qamar Abbas Naqvi, a member of a peace committee based in Larkana, Pakistan, shared that 30 people died on the spot, while five others succumbed to their injuries later at the hospital. He also revealed that the group of pilgrims was traveling in two buses, but only the bus in the front met with the accident. The second bus was delayed due to documentation issues and was not involved in the crash.

The crisis management director general of Yazd province confirmed to Iranian state TV that 11 women and 17 men were among those who lost their lives. He added that seven of the injured were in critical condition, and six people had already been discharged from the hospital.

Preliminary investigations by Iranian traffic police suggested that a technical defect in the bus’s braking system caused the accident. This has raised concerns about the safety and maintenance of vehicles used for long-distance travel in the region.

Syed Athar Shamsi, the leader of the convoy, stated that the pilgrims were on their way to participate in Arbaeen, an important religious observance. He expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and mentioned that the injured were being treated in a local government hospital. Most of the injured passengers were in critical condition, and the situation was being closely monitored.

In response to the tragedy, Pakistani leaders, including President Asif Ali Zardari, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Omar Ayub, expressed their condolences. President Zardari directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to provide all necessary assistance to the injured and to help bring the bodies of the deceased back to Pakistan. The entire nation mourns the loss of these lives, and prayers have been offered for the speedy recovery of those injured in this devastating accident.

British Tech Tycoon Goes Missing After Yacht Sinks Off Sicily

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter are among six people missing after their luxury yacht sank off the coast of Sicily in the early hours of Monday morning. The 56-meter (183-foot) yacht, named Bayesian, was carrying 22 people, including British, American, and Canadian nationals. Authorities are continuing the search as night falls.

The Incident: Yacht Capsizes in Storm

The yacht Bayesian encountered a severe storm, leading to its capsizing around 5:00 AM local time. The storm was so intense that it caused waterspouts—rotating columns of air similar to tornadoes—to form over the sea. The yacht’s anchor was down when the storm struck, causing the mast to break and the vessel to lose balance, eventually sinking off the coast near the village of Porticello, close to Palermo, the capital of Sicily.

Rescue Efforts and Missing Persons

Out of the 22 people on board, 15 were rescued, including a one-year-old British girl. However, Mike Lynch, his daughter Hannah Lynch, and the yacht’s chef remain missing. Divers have identified the wreckage 50 meters below the water’s surface and are continuing their search. The director general of Sicily’s civil protection agency, Salvatore Cocina, confirmed that one body was recovered outside the wreckage, but the nationality has not been confirmed.

Survivors’ Accounts

Charlotte Golunski, one of the survivors, recounted her harrowing experience of holding her one-year-old daughter tightly in the stormy sea. She described the chaos as many screamed for help. Fortunately, a nearby Dutch-flagged vessel deployed an inflatable lifeboat, rescuing 11 people, including Charlotte and her daughter. They were later brought aboard the vessel and taken to Di Cristina Hospital in Palermo, where Dr. Domenico Cipolla, a doctor, reported that the survivors were exhausted and constantly inquiring about the missing individuals. They were deeply distressed, coming to terms with the grim realization that there was little hope of finding their friends alive.

Mike Lynch’s Background and the Yacht’s Ownership

Mike Lynch, often referred to as “the British Bill Gates,” co-founded the software company Autonomy, which was sold to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion (£8.6 billion) in 2011. The yacht Bayesian was owned by his wife, Angela Bacares, who has been rescued. The yacht’s name is derived from Bayesian theory, which was the basis of Lynch’s PhD thesis.

The Search Continues

The search for the missing people is ongoing, with rescue teams working through the night. The UK Foreign Office is supporting the British nationals involved in the incident, and Britain’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch is sending inspectors to conduct a preliminary assessment of the yacht’s sinking. The severe storms that caused this tragic incident are part of a series of bad weather events affecting the western Mediterranean.

The loss of life and the ongoing search for the missing have drawn attention to the need for continued vigilance and safety measures in maritime travel. The families and loved ones of those missing hope for a miracle as rescue efforts continue, facing overwhelming odds.

Super Blue Moon Dazzles Stargazers Worldwide on Aug 20

A rare Super Blue Moon captivated stargazers around the world on August 20, creating a stunning cosmic display. The glowing sphere lit up the night sky, prompting astronomy enthusiasts to share their breathtaking photos across social media platforms. The sight of the unusually bright and large Super Blue Moon was awe-inspiring, and many people eagerly documented the event.

The Super Blue Moon is the first of four “supermoons” that will occur in 2024, making it a highly anticipated event for skywatchers. A supermoon happens when the full moon coincides with its closest approach to Earth in its elliptical orbit, known as perigee. This proximity makes the moon appear slightly larger and brighter than usual, creating a visual treat for those lucky enough to witness it.

This Super Blue Moon was particularly special because it was also 2024’s only “blue moon,” a term with two distinct meanings. Last year’s blue moon was the second full moon in a calendar month, a phenomenon that occurs only occasionally. This year’s blue moon, however, aligns with the definition preferred by astronomers: the third of four full moons in a single astronomical season. This version of the blue moon is also relatively rare, happening only once every few years.

Is It Really “Blue”?

Despite the name, the Super Blue Moon did not actually appear blue. The term “blue moon” is more of a quirk of the calendar than an indicator of the moon’s color. It refers to the occurrence of an extra full moon within a particular time frame, whether it be a calendar month or an astronomical season. Both types of blue moons are infrequent, adding to the excitement and intrigue surrounding this celestial event.

As the Super Blue Moon graced the night sky, people from different regions of the world gathered to marvel at its beauty. Many took the opportunity to capture the moment, using everything from high-end cameras to smartphones. The resulting images showcased the moon in all its glory, glowing brilliantly against the dark canvas of the sky.

#SuperBlueMoon Trending

Social media platforms buzzed with activity as users shared their photos and experiences. The hashtag #SuperBlueMoon quickly gained traction, with posts flooding in from every corner of the globe. From cityscapes to rural landscapes, the Super Blue Moon was a focal point in countless photographs, each capturing the moon’s brilliance in unique and creative ways.

This cosmic event served as a reminder of the wonders of the universe and the shared experiences that bring people together. Whether you were an experienced astronomer or a casual observer, the Super Blue Moon offered a moment of connection, as millions of people turned their eyes to the sky to witness a rare and beautiful phenomenon.

The Super Blue Moon of August 20 will be remembered as one of the standout astronomical events of 2024. As the first supermoon of the year and the only blue moon, it set the stage for the remaining supermoons that will occur throughout the year. For now, those who were fortunate enough to witness this celestial show can treasure the memories and the photos that captured the magic of the night.

YouTuber Aun Ali Khosa Returns Home Safely

YouTuber Aun Ali Khosa, who was reportedly abducted on August 15, has been safely returned home, his lawyers confirmed early Monday. The development follows a Lahore High Court (LHC) order requiring the Lahore police to recover Khosa by August 20.

The abduction case garnered significant attention after Khosa’s wife, Binish Iqbal, filed a petition with the court alleging that her husband was held “unlawfully and illegally” by law enforcement authorities. Iqbal expressed grave concern for her husband’s safety, citing fears that he had become a victim of enforced disappearance.

In her petition, Iqbal described Khosa as a “digital content creator, a writer, and a dignified comedian/artist” with a substantial YouTube following of 137,000 subscribers. She detailed that, in the early hours of August 15, approximately a dozen police officers and individuals with masked faces had forcibly entered their apartment, breaking down the entrance door. These men, who were heavily armed, confiscated Khosa’s phone, laptop, computer system, and digital camera.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) expressed alarm over Khosa’s abduction, raising concerns that it might be linked to his work as a satirist. The HRCP called for his immediate release, highlighting the growing issue of enforced disappearances in the country.

The situation took a positive turn late Monday night when Khosa’s lawyer, Khadija Siddiqi, announced via X (formerly Twitter) that Khosa had been released and safely returned home. Siddiqi posted, “Alhamdulillah, Aun Ali Khosa has been released! He has reached home!”

Khosa’s lawyers

Mian Ali Ashfaq, another of Khosa’s lawyers, also confirmed his safe return, stating on X that Khosa was in good spirits. “Alhamdulillah, he is courageous, safe, and determined,” Ashfaq remarked, expressing gratitude to Siddiqi for her support. He added, “May Allah bless him and his family every step of the way.”

In a follow-up post, Siddiqi criticized the repeated incidents of abductions, describing a troubling pattern. “Over the last two months, we have fought numerous missing persons cases, including Aun Ali’s, at the Lahore High Court,” Siddiqi noted. She criticized the methods used by the abductors, emphasizing the similarity in their approach: “They come in the dark of the night, break down doors, and take away mobile phones and laptops, often removing CCTV cameras. They harass the victim and then return them only when ordered by the court.”

Siddiqi expressed hope that these practices would end and urged for legal action against those who violate the law. “If someone has violated the law, they should be brought to court and prosecuted,” she asserted.

The return of Aun Ali Khosa brings relief to his family, supporters, and the broader community, while also shedding light on the broader issue of enforced disappearances and the need for justice and accountability in such cases.

Al Hilal Thrashes Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr in Saudi Super Cup

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr suffered a disappointing defeat in the 2024 Saudi Super Cup final, losing 4-1 to their fierce rivals Al Hilal on Saturday. Despite Ronaldo’s best efforts, his team was outclassed by Al Hilal, who secured their second consecutive Saudi Super Cup title and their fifth overall, further cementing their dominance in the competition.

The match, held at the packed King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh, started with both teams displaying cautious play. Al Nassr, led by their star captain Ronaldo, managed to break the deadlock just before halftime. Ronaldo, in typical fashion, found the back of the net in the 44th minute, giving his side a 1-0 lead and a glimmer of hope as they headed into the break.

However, Al Hilal came out after the interval with renewed energy and determination, quickly turning the tide in their favor. Just five minutes into the second half, Serbian midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic leveled the score for Al Hilal with a well-placed header. This goal ignited Al Hilal’s attack, and just eight minutes later, their lead was doubled by another Serbian star, Aleksandar Mitrović, who slotted the ball past Al Nassr’s goalkeeper to make it 2-1.

Mitrović, who has been in outstanding form since joining Al Hilal, struck again in the 63rd minute. His second goal of the night gave Al Hilal a commanding 3-1 lead, leaving Ronaldo and his teammates visibly frustrated and struggling to regain control of the match. Despite Al Nassr’s attempts to mount a comeback, they were unable to break through Al Hilal’s solid defense.

The final blow came in the 69th minute when Brazilian forward Malcolm, known for his pace and technical skills, added a fourth goal for Al Hilal. His strike effectively sealed the victory, as Al Nassr’s hopes of lifting the trophy faded away.

As the clock ticked down, Al Hilal’s dominance on the pitch became increasingly evident. They maintained their composure, denying Al Nassr any significant opportunities to close the gap. When the final whistle blew, Al Hilal celebrated their well-deserved 4-1 victory, while Ronaldo and his teammates were left to rue their missed chances and ponder what went wrong.

This victory not only secured Al Hilal’s place as the most successful club in the history of the Saudi Super Cup but also highlighted their current supremacy in Saudi football. For Al Nassr and Ronaldo, the loss is a significant setback, as they had hoped to build on their recent successes and add another trophy to their collection.

As the teams left the pitch, the contrast in emotions was stark. Al Hilal’s players celebrated their triumph with their fans, who filled the stadium with cheers and chants. Meanwhile, Ronaldo, despite his lone goal, could only look on as Al Hilal once again lifted the coveted Saudi Super Cup trophy. The defeat serves as a reminder that even with a star-studded lineup, success in football requires more than individual brilliance; it requires a collective effort and resilience, something Al Hilal demonstrated in abundance.

Mbappé’s Frustrating La Liga Debut, Real Madrid Held 1-1 by Mallorca

French football star Kylian Mbappé’s much-anticipated La Liga debut with Real Madrid ended in disappointment as the team was held to a 1-1 draw against Real Mallorca on Sunday. Despite the star-studded lineup, Madrid struggled to break down a resilient Mallorca side at the Son Moix Stadium, leaving fans and pundits questioning the team’s performance and Mbappé’s impact.

Mbappé, who joined Real Madrid after a high-profile move from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), faced a tough challenge against Mallorca’s defense. The French forward was thwarted by an impressive performance from Mallorca goalkeeper Dominik Greif, who denied him several opportunities to score. Real Madrid had taken an early lead thanks to a goal from Rodrygo, but their advantage was short-lived. Mallorca’s Vedat Muriqi equalized in the second half with a towering header, leaving Madrid unable to reclaim the lead.

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti expressed his disappointment with the team’s performance, particularly their lack of balance and defensive stability in the second half. “We went ahead, we had chances to score the second, and then in the second half we lacked balance,” Ancelotti told reporters after the match. “We conceded counter-attacks, it was not a good game. It was quite clear that we need to defend better and have better balance on the pitch.”

Ancelotti fielded the same starting lineup that secured victory against Atalanta in the UEFA Super Cup earlier in the week, with Mbappé leading the attack alongside Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo. Despite scoring in the Super Cup win, Mbappé was unable to replicate that success in his La Liga debut, leaving him visibly frustrated on the pitch.

The draw has sparked criticism on social media, with some fans voicing their disappointment in Mbappé’s performance. One fan described his debut as a “biblical stinker,” while another labeled it a “disgraceful shambolic performance.” The criticism highlights the high expectations surrounding the 25-year-old, who was seen as a key signing for Madrid’s aspirations in both domestic and European competitions.

Mbappé’s underwhelming debut has raised questions about his adaptation to Spanish football and Real Madrid’s ability to integrate him into their existing system. While it is still early in the season, the draw against Mallorca is a reminder that even the most talented players can face challenges when adjusting to a new league.

Ancelotti, however, remains optimistic that the team will learn from this match and improve in the coming weeks. “We have to do better, with more attitude,” Ancelotti stated. “This game can serve us to learn a lot from, it’s a game where it was quite clear where we had a problem. Mallorca had a very good game in a defensive sense, better than us.”

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Mbappé and Real Madrid to see how they respond to this early setback. With the weight of expectations on his shoulders, Mbappé will be eager to make his mark in La Liga and help Madrid compete for the title. For now, though, his debut serves as a reminder that success in football is never guaranteed, no matter how talented the players on the pitch may be.

KCCI Urges Delay of Tajir Dost Scheme and Withdrawal of Tax Notices

Iftikhar Ahmed Sheikh, President of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), has called for an immediate halt to the Tajir Dost Scheme and the withdrawal of tax notices issued to small shopkeepers. Sheikh highlighted that the scheme requires shopkeepers to pay a hefty tax of Rs60,000 per month, a sum deemed unaffordable for many.

In his statement, Sheikh criticized the tax officials for serving notices to both registered and unregistered shopkeepers, contrary to earlier assurances that small businesses would face a minimal tax of Rs1,000 to Rs1,200. The current demand of Rs60,000 is being described as excessively burdensome, pushing many shopkeepers to the brink of closure.

Sheikh emphasized that the Tajir Dost Scheme, flawed in its current form, needs a thorough review with input from all relevant stakeholders. He stressed that shopkeepers, already struggling with high inflation and steep utility bills, cannot withstand such severe tax demands without jeopardizing their livelihoods.

The KCCI President expressed concern that the imposition of such a high tax could force many businesses to shut down, worsening economic conditions and public hardship. He noted that the notices have caused significant anxiety among shopkeepers, regardless of their registration status.

Sheikh has appealed to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb to address the difficulties faced by shopkeepers. He urged the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to reconsider the tax demands and to suspend the scheme until it is revised to be more supportive of the business community.

The Karachi Chamber firmly rejects the current implementation of the Tajir Dost Scheme and calls for its postponement until it can be restructured to better accommodate the needs of shopkeepers.

Multinational Companies Exit Pakistan Due to Internet Disruptions

The Pakistan Business Council (PBC) issued a stark warning on Friday, highlighting a troubling trend that has seen several multinational companies (MNCs) either planning to relocate their back offices from Pakistan or having already done so in recent months. This development is seen as a significant blow to the country’s struggling economy, which is already grappling with high unemployment, sluggish growth, and a declining business environment.

The PBC’s warning came on the heels of a report by the Dubai Chamber of Commerce, which revealed that 3,968 Pakistani companies registered in Dubai between January and June 2024. This figure places Pakistan as the second-ranked country in terms of new business registrations in Dubai, a position that underscores the growing exodus of businesses from Pakistan. The number of companies registered in Dubai from Pakistan during this period represents a 17% increase compared to the same period in 2023, when 3,395 firms were registered. Last year, the Dubai Chamber of Commerce registered a total of 8,036 new Pakistani businesses.

The surge in Pakistani businesses relocating to Dubai is a clear indication of the increasing challenges faced by companies operating in Pakistan. The PBC pointed to widespread internet disruptions, particularly those caused by the imposition of a firewall, as a major factor driving MNCs to consider moving their operations out of the country. These disruptions have significantly affected the country’s tech industry, which is crucial for economic growth and job creation.

“This migration reflects a deepening lack of confidence in the government’s economic policies,” the PBC stated. The council identified several key factors contributing to this trust deficit, including the high cost of doing business, political uncertainties, soaring electricity costs, and deteriorating law and order. These issues have made it increasingly difficult for businesses to operate effectively in Pakistan, prompting many to seek more stable environments abroad.

The PBC also highlighted the broader economic implications of this trend, noting that the country is already struggling with the costs associated with idle capacity in power generation. This has led to unemployment, a loss of exports, and reduced tax revenue. Now, Pakistan faces the additional threat of idle capacity in the emerging software sector due to the poorly executed firewall, which has further compounded the country’s economic woes.

The tech industry has voiced serious concerns over the recent internet slowdown, warning that these disruptions could cost Pakistan up to $300 million. The PBC called on the authorities to address the issue by either improving the firewall or learning to apply it without causing unnecessary harm to employment and exports. The council emphasized that the IT and IT-enabled services sectors, along with agriculture and tourism, offer valuable opportunities to achieve the Prime Minister’s export targets over the next three years. However, high-speed connectivity is vital for realizing this potential.

The Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OICCI) echoed the PBC’s concerns, warning that frequent internet disruptions could derail Pakistan’s economic progress. Similarly, the Pakistan Software Houses Association described these disruptions as not merely inconveniences but as a direct and aggressive assault on the industry’s viability, with financial losses potentially reaching $300 million or more.

As Pakistan continues to face significant economic challenges, the warnings from business leaders and industry associations underscore the urgent need for the government to address these issues. Failure to do so could result in further erosion of investor confidence, leading to more companies and talent leaving the country in search of better opportunities elsewhere.

KCCI Urges Govt to Provide Relief in Electricity Bills for Sindh

The Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has issued a strong appeal to the federal government, calling for immediate relief in electricity bills for the people of Sindh. In a recent statement, the KCCI emphasized the urgent need for a reduction of 14 rupees per unit in electricity tariffs, similar to the relief recently extended to Punjab.

Sindh’s Growing Distress Over High Electricity Bills

The statement from the Karachi Chamber highlights the growing concern among the residents of Sindh over the rising electricity bills. The excessive charges have become a significant burden for both the public and the business community. The Chamber expressed deep concern about the financial strain this is placing on the people, noting that many are finding it increasingly difficult to meet their electricity expenses.

According to the KCCI, the current electricity rates are unsustainable for the average household in Sindh. The statement pointed out that the economic pressure is not only affecting low-income families but is also hitting the middle class hard. This situation has led to widespread distress, as people struggle to balance their budgets in the face of these rising costs.

Impact on Sindh’s Business Community

The Karachi Chamber also highlighted the severe impact of high electricity bills on Sindh’s business community. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), in particular, are facing significant challenges due to the inflated costs. The statement mentioned that many businesses are already operating on thin margins, and the added burden of high electricity rates could push them into financial ruin.

The Chamber warned that if immediate relief is not provided, many businesses could be forced to shut down. This would not only harm the local economy but also lead to increased unemployment, further exacerbating the financial difficulties faced by the people of Sindh. The KCCI emphasized that relief in electricity bills is not just a matter of convenience but a necessity for the survival of both the people and the business sector in the region.

Call for Fair Treatment and Urgent Action

In its statement, the Karachi Chamber urged the federal government to treat the people of Sindh with fairness and equity. The Chamber called on the government to extend the same relief to Sindh that was recently provided to Punjab. It stressed that the people of Sindh deserve the same level of support and consideration, particularly in light of the significant challenges they are facing. Who Invented Emojis and Why?

These small icons, ranging from smiley faces to diverse symbols, have revolutionized text-based communication, adding layers of emotion, nuance, and personality that words alone sometimes struggle to convey. But where did this phenomenon originate, and how did it become a global language? Let’s explore the story behind emojis, from their inception by Shigetaka Kurita to their widespread adoption and evolution

Who Created the First Emojis?

The origin of emojis can be traced back to 1999, when Shigetaka Kurita, a designer working for the Japanese telecommunications company NTT DoCoMo, created the first set of emojis. Kurita was tasked with enhancing the company’s mobile messaging platform, i-mode, which was a pioneering service for mobile internet in Japan.

Kurita’s role was to address a significant challenge: how to enrich communication on mobile devices that had very limited text space. The solution he and his team devised was innovative and simple yet profoundly impactful. They developed a set of 176 emojis, which were small, pixelated icons designed to convey a range of emotions, objects, and concepts.

These early emojis included representations of weather conditions, food items, emotions like happiness and sadness, and everyday objects. They were designed to provide users with a way to add emotional context and visual expression to their text messages, which was especially valuable given the constraints of early mobile devices.

Why Were Emojis Created?

The creation of emojis was driven by a practical need: enhancing communication in the context of limited text space on early mobile phones. Mobile messaging at the time was constrained by character limits, which made it challenging for users to convey emotions and nuances effectively. Kurita and his team saw an opportunity to improve this by introducing a visual language that could supplement text.

Emojis provided a solution to this problem by allowing users to express emotions and ideas in a more immediate and visually engaging way. For example, instead of writing out a long explanation of how you felt, you could use a smiley face or a sad face to convey your emotions quickly. This not only made communication more efficient but also added a personal touch to messages.

In addition to emotional expression, emojis helped users communicate complex ideas or situations concisely. A single emoji could represent a range of meanings, from a heart to indicate love or affection to a cloud with rain to signal bad weather. This visual shorthand made it easier for users to share information and connect with each other, even when their messages were limited in length.

different emojis

The Spread of Emojis from Japan to the World

While emojis were initially developed for use within Japan, their appeal quickly became apparent. As mobile phones and internet services spread globally, the use of emojis began to catch on outside Japan. By the mid-2000s, emojis were being incorporated into various international operating systems and messaging platforms, thanks in part to the efforts of the Unicode Consortium.

The Unicode Consortium is an organization responsible for standardizing text characters across different platforms and devices. Recognizing the growing importance of emojis, the consortium began including them in its character sets, ensuring that they could be used consistently across different systems. This standardization played a crucial role in making emojis a global phenomenon.

As emojis spread, they underwent further development and expansion. New emojis were introduced to reflect a wider range of emotions, objects, and cultural contexts. The visual design of emojis also evolved, with different platforms creating their own interpretations while adhering to the general guidelines set by the Unicode Standard.

Current State of Emojis

As of 2024, there are over 3,000 emojis available, reflecting a vast and diverse array of symbols that cater to various aspects of human experience and culture. This extensive collection includes emojis representing different professions, activities, animals, and more. The continued growth and evolution of emojis are driven by changing cultural norms, technological advancements, and user needs.

How Are New Emojis Approved?

The process of introducing new emojis involves several steps. Proposals for new emojis are submitted to the Unicode Consortium, where they are reviewed and evaluated based on factors such as usability, frequency of use, and cultural relevance. This process ensures that new emojis meet the needs of a global audience and contribute meaningfully to the existing set.

Once a proposal is approved, the new emoji is added to the Unicode Standard and becomes available for use on various platforms. This process helps ensure that emojis remain relevant and continue to serve the evolving needs of users worldwide.

Why Do Emojis Look Different on Different Platforms?

One of the unique aspects of emojis is that their appearance can vary depending on the platform or device being used. While the Unicode Standard provides a general guideline for each emoji, the visual representation can differ based on the design choices of each platform.

Different platforms and devices have their own styles and aesthetics, which can result in variations in how emojis are displayed. For example, an emoji might look slightly different on an iPhone compared to an Android device. Despite these differences, the core meaning of the emoji remains consistent, allowing users to communicate effectively across different systems.

Karachi Faces Continued Rainfall, More Expected in Coming Hours

Light to moderate rainfall has persisted across parts of Karachi since Sunday morning, in line with forecasts from the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). The city is expected to experience another round of monsoon showers within the next 24 hours, with varying intensities of rainfall observed in different areas.

Surjani Town’s Yousuf Goth has been the most heavily affected area, receiving 76mm of rain since the morning, the highest amount recorded in the city so far. Other regions, including North Karachi, Federal B Area, Sohrab Goth, Scheme 33, and parts of Gulistan-e-Johar and Gulshan-e-Iqbal, have also seen substantial rainfall.

Areas like Malir Halt, Defence, Korangi, Landhi, and Quaidabad, along with nearby locations, have been drenched by lighter rain, leading to widespread water accumulation and potential disruptions.

According to the PMD, the current temperature in Karachi is 27°C, with a forecasted high of 32°C. The city is likely to remain cloudy with strong winds, with sea breezes possibly reaching speeds of 15 to 25 kilometers per hour. Humidity levels are high at 88%.

In response to the rainy conditions, Karachi Traffic Police have issued safety guidelines for drivers. Motorcyclists are advised to use the left side of the road to avoid accidents, and drivers are cautioned against sudden braking due to the slippery roads.

The traffic police recommend keeping speeds low and maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles to ensure safety on the wet roads.

Weather analyst Owais Hyder told Geo News that the low-pressure system affecting Sindh is primarily impacting Karachi’s northern and western areas, which have seen continuous rain for 2 to 3 hours. The effects of this weather system are expected to spread to other parts of the city shortly.

The PMD predicts that rain will continue through Sunday night, particularly affecting District Central and other areas of Karachi. Residents are urged to monitor weather updates and take appropriate precautions to mitigate the effects of the ongoing rainfall.

As Karachi endures this period of persistent rain, both residents and authorities are preparing for the challenges posed by the monsoon weather, with safety measures and emergency services on high alert.

Earthquake Triggers Shiveluch Volcano Eruption in Russia’s Kamchatka

A powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck off Russia’s eastern coast, triggering an eruption from the Shiveluch volcano and sending a massive column of ash soaring into the sky. The eruption and earthquake occurred early Sunday morning, local time, causing concern among residents and authorities in the region.

The Shiveluch volcano, one of Kamchatka’s most active and dangerous volcanoes, is located about 280 miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a coastal city with a population of approximately 180,000 people. The Kamchatka Peninsula is known for its volcanic activity, with several active volcanoes dotting the landscape.

According to the state-run media outlet TASS, the ash column from the Shiveluch eruption has reached an estimated height of 8 kilometers (5 miles) above sea level. Along with the ash, the volcano has also released a significant flow of lava. However, there have been no immediate reports of injuries, TASS confirmed.

The earthquake that preceded the eruption had its epicenter around 55 miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, at a depth of about 30 miles, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Despite the strength of the tremor, initial reports suggest that no major damage has occurred in the area. Buildings are currently being inspected for any potential structural damage, with a particular focus on social facilities such as schools, hospitals, and other public buildings.

Gold Price in Pakistan Hits Record High After Rs. 300 Increase

Gold prices in Pakistan surged to a new record on Friday, with an increase of Rs. 300 per tola, bringing the price to an unprecedented Rs. 257,700 per tola. The price for 10 grams of gold also saw a rise of Rs. 256, reaching Rs. 220,936.

The Karachi Sarafa Association, which monitors local gold rates, noted that despite the increase, gold prices in Pakistan remain Rs. 2,000 per tola below the actual international cost. This discrepancy is often attributed to fluctuations in the exchange rate and market demand.

On the global stage, the price of spot gold increased by 0.3%, reaching $2,462.82 per ounce. The rise in gold prices internationally is largely driven by economic uncertainties, which often lead investors to seek refuge in precious metals like gold.

This latest hike in gold prices is expected to impact the local market, particularly affecting those involved in the jewelry business and consumers looking to purchase gold. As prices continue to rise, many are keeping a close watch on the market for further changes.

With the global economy facing various challenges, gold is likely to remain a popular investment choice, influencing prices both internationally and locally.

Tragic Loss of lives in Gaza Highlights War’s Toll on Children

The war in Gaza has claimed countless lives, but few stories are as heart-wrenching as that of 9-year-old Khaled Joudeh and his younger brother, Tamer. The brothers’ tragic journey began on October 22, when an Israeli airstrike destroyed their home, killing their parents, older brother, baby sister, and dozens of other relatives. In an instant, the young boys were left orphans, facing a world of unimaginable pain and loss.

Khaled, despite his young age, tried to be a pillar of strength for Tamer, who survived the strike but was left severely injured with a broken back and leg. Their uncle, Mohammad Faris, recalls how Khaled would comfort his younger brother during moments of despair. “He would always quiet his brother when he cried,” Faris told *The New York Times* in a recent phone interview. “He would tell him: ‘Mama and Baba are in heaven. Mama and Baba would be sad if they knew we were crying because of them.’”

But Khaled’s own strength was fragile. At night, the ongoing Israeli airstrikes on Gaza would terrify him, causing him to wake up shaking and screaming. He would sometimes run to his uncle for comfort, seeking solace from the horrors surrounding him.

This short, terrifying existence for the young brothers ended on January 9 when another airstrike struck the family home where they had sought shelter. The attack claimed the lives of Khaled, Tamer, their 2-year-old cousin Nada, and three other relatives, according to family members.

The tragic story of Khaled and Tamer underscores the profound toll that the 10-month-old war in Gaza has taken on children. Innocent lives have been caught in the crossfire, paying the ultimate price for a conflict they had no part in.

Since the October 7 Hamas-led attack on Israel, the Israeli military launched an aggressive campaign with the stated goal of eradicating Hamas. This has led to one of the heaviest aerial bombardments in recent history on the densely populated Gaza Strip. Israel has accused Hamas of exploiting Gaza’s urban landscape to shield its fighters and weapons infrastructure, using tunnels under neighborhoods, launching rockets near civilian homes, and holding hostages in city centers. Hamas, however, denies these accusations, asserting that its members are Gazans who live among the population.

Despite the complexities of urban warfare, international law experts emphasize that Israel has a responsibility to protect civilians, even if Hamas exploits them as Israel claims. The Israeli military has stated that it takes “all feasible precautions” to mitigate harm to civilians. However, the devastating impact on Gaza’s children is undeniable.

Of the tens of thousands of Palestinians killed in the war, an estimated 15,000 were under 18, according to Gazan health officials. The United Nations estimates that at least 19,000 more children have been orphaned, and nearly one million children have been displaced, according to UNICEF, the U.N. children’s agency. These statistics reflect the staggering human cost of the conflict, particularly on Gaza’s youngest and most vulnerable residents.

As the war drags on, the stories of children like Khaled and Tamer serve as a poignant reminder of the innocent lives lost and the profound suffering endured by those who remain.

Freelancers in Pakistan Struggle Amidst Internet Disruptions and Inflation

Pakistan’s freelance community is facing severe challenges due to ongoing internet disruptions, which have significantly impacted their ability to work and maintain client relationships. As the country grapples with inflation and economic strain, these issues are further exacerbating the difficulties faced by freelancers.

Recent disruptions have led to a surge in complaints from freelancers who are struggling with slow internet speeds and partial outages. Many have reported difficulties accessing their Fiverr accounts and other essential tools, severely affecting their ability to perform their work. A Pakistani freelancer, who wished to remain anonymous, shared with Geo.tv that the internet issues have led to substantial losses. “We are all facing different issues and many people in the freelancing community lost their potential long-term clients. We were not able to send files or download ones sent to us over WhatsApp,” the freelancer lamented.

The problems extend beyond just connectivity issues. Users across Pakistan are experiencing slowdowns and interruptions, particularly when using mobile data. There has been no explanation from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) regarding these issues. Additionally, users of WhatsApp have encountered delays and failures in sending or downloading messages and media.

The situation has been aggravated by the government’s decision to block access to X (formerly known as Twitter) since the February 8 elections. Citing national security concerns, the government has restricted access to the microblogging site, forcing users to rely on VPNs (virtual private networks) to bypass these restrictions.

Many freelancers have voiced their frustration, noting that the internet disruptions are directly impacting their work. A freelance computer scientist highlighted the severity of the problem, explaining how the inability to meet deadlines due to slow internet has led clients to seek services elsewhere. “Many of the people in the freelancing community lost their potential long-term clients who were paying them a hefty amount monthly, and some of them relied on it,” he said. The disruption has resulted in missed deadlines and the loss of clients who are critical to many freelancers’ livelihoods.

The impact of these disruptions is also evident in the broader market. Faraz Ahmed, a freelancer with a decade of experience, reported significant losses due to internet issues. His team, which provides services to clients working on Amazon through remote desktop connections, has been unable to maintain the speed and efficiency required. “Thousands of freelancers in Pakistan have faced trouble connecting to desktops due to internet disruptions. Our business saw a 30% loss within a week, and clients have shifted their work to India and Bangladesh,” Ahmed explained. He warned that if these issues persist, many virtual assistants working from rural areas may lose their jobs.

Shahzad Arshad, Chairman of the Wireless and Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan (WISPAP), also expressed concern about the situation. He described the internet slowdown as having “disrupted the flow of online work,” which is critical for many freelancers. Arshad noted that the delays and inability to upload files promptly have resulted in missed deadlines and loss of client trust. “The economic repercussions are severe. For freelancers who earn on a per-project basis, delays mean direct financial losses,” he added. He warned that continued disruptions could lead to a loss of Pakistan’s competitive edge in the global freelance market, potentially resulting in a decrease in foreign currency inflow and negatively impacting the national economy.

As the situation unfolds, the freelance community in Pakistan remains hopeful for a resolution to the internet issues, which are vital for their economic survival and continued engagement in the global market.

Israeli Evacuation Orders and Attacks Escalate Crisis in Gaza

Recently, the Israeli army has issued many evacuation orders for different parts of Gaza, including the north, central, and southern areas. Hamad City in Khan Younis is one of these areas and has been labelled a combat zone.

Families in these zones are facing dire circumstances, with many expressing that they have nowhere to go as they flee the conflict. The situation has been further complicated by new developments in the West Bank.

The Israeli government has announced plans to establish a new illegal settlement in the occupied territory, part of a broader initiative to make five illegal settlements official, a decision announced in June. This move is said to be a response to several European countries recognizing an independent Palestinian state in recent months.

The crisis in Gaza intensified with a massive overnight attack in az-Zawayda, located just a few kilometers from the conflict’s epicenter. The attack targeted a warehouse where a displaced family had taken shelter. Israeli missiles struck the warehouse, causing severe destruction and a large fire that engulfed the building. The assault resulted in the deaths of at least fifteen people, including six children.

The attack has led to significant grief and frustration among the affected families. Rescue teams are still working to recover bodies from the debris. The bodies of the victims are being prepared for burial at Al-Aqsa Hospital’s morgue, where families are grappling with the heavy toll of the violence.

The escalation of violence and the ongoing displacement of families highlight the urgent need for humanitarian assistance and a resolution to the escalating conflict. The situation remains tense as the international community watches and responds to the unfolding crisis.

Paetongtarn Shinawatra Elected Thailand’s Youngest Prime Minister

Paetongtarn Shinawatra, aged 37, has been elected as the new prime minister. She is the youngest child of Thaksin Shinawatra, the billionaire who founded the Pheu Thai Party and was also a former prime minister. Paetongtarn, often known by her nickname Ung-Ing, was elected easily due to her party and its allies holding a majority of seats in parliament.

Paetongtarn studied at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, a prestigious institution. Before venturing into politics three years ago, she managed the hotel division of her family’s business empire. Her political career began in 2021 when she became the chief of the Pheu Thai Party’s Inclusion and Innovation Advisory Committee. She gave birth to her second child just two weeks before the 2023 elections, in which she was a prominent candidate.

This marks Paetongtarn as the third member of her family to hold Thailand’s top position. Her father, Thaksin, served as prime minister from 2001 until he was ousted by a military coup in 2006. Her aunt, Yingluck Shinawatra, also served as prime minister from 2011 until she was removed by the Constitutional Court in 2014 following political turmoil and a subsequent military coup.

Both Thaksin and Yingluck had left Thailand for self-imposed exile to avoid arrest, but Thaksin returned to Thailand in August 2023.

Paetongtarn is also notable for being Thailand’s second-ever female prime minister, following her aunt. As the youngest person to assume the role, her appointment represents a new chapter in Thailand’s political landscape.

Why Was Srettha Thavisin Removed as Prime Minister?

Srettha Thavisin, the former prime minister of Thailand, was removed from office by the Constitutional Court in Bangkok this week. This decision was made after the court accepted a petition from 40 senators who were dissatisfied with his actions.

The primary issue leading to Srettha’s removal was his appointment of Pichit Chuenban, a former lawyer who had previously been jailed for six months in 2008. Pichit was convicted of contempt of court after attempting to bribe court officials with 2 million baht ($55,218), which was placed in a grocery bag. Senators argued that appointing someone with such a controversial past fell short of ethical and moral standards.

Critics also speculated that Pichit’s connection with Thaksin Shinawatra, a billionaire who founded the Pheu Thai Party, played a role in his appointment. Thaksin’s influence over the party was seen as a factor that might have aided Pichit’s rise to this position.

Srettha’s removal marks him as the fourth Thai prime minister in 16 years to be ousted by the Constitutional Court. The decision highlights ongoing political instability in Thailand, where the judiciary has frequently intervened in political matters.

Yerin Ha, 29, is known for her role as Kwan Ha in the Paramount+ series Halo, which was recently cancelled. She has also appeared in the Australian miniseries Bad Behaviour, the horror-comedy Sissy (2022), the ABC drama Troppo (2022), and several episodes of the 2019 drama Reef Break.

The fourth season of Bridgerton will focus on the love story of Benedict Bridgerton, the second eldest Bridgerton sibling. In a press release, it was revealed that despite his older and younger brothers being happily married, Benedict has been reluctant to settle down—until he meets a captivating “Lady in Silver” at his mother’s masquerade ball.

In the previous seasons, the love lives of other Bridgerton siblings took center stage. Season three followed the marriage of Colin Bridgerton (played by Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan). Season two showcased the romance between Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley). The first season featured Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page).

Benedict’s character was last seen in season three, exploring his sexuality with Lady Tilley Arnold (Hannah New) and Paul Suarez (Lucas Aurelio). According to Shonda Rhimes, the executive producer of the show, Benedict is a “charming man who’s trying to find his way.” She described him as delightful and funny, adding that viewers would enjoy watching his journey.

Showrunner Jess Brownell also commented on Benedict’s character, explaining that it was important for him to explore all aspects of himself before settling down. She emphasized that Benedict has “big appetites” and wanted to show him living a full life before he decided to commit to one person.

As of now, there is no official release date for the eight-episode fourth season. However, fans can catch up on the first three seasons, which are available for streaming on Netflix.

Bridgerton first premiered in 2020 and quickly became one of the most-watched shows across all streaming platforms. In June alone, it amassed 9.3 billion viewing minutes. The show’s success also contributed to Netflix gaining eight million new subscribers between April and June, marking a 37 percent increase compared to the same period in 2022.

Hammad Azhar Steps Down Again as PTI Punjab President

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Hammad Azhar announced on Thursday that he is stepping down as the president of the party’s Punjab chapter, citing a lack of access to the imprisoned former prime minister and PTI chairman, Imran Khan. Azhar’s resignation marks the second time this year that he has relinquished a prominent position within the party due to similar concerns.

In March, Azhar had resigned as the general secretary and acting president of PTI Punjab, stating that his legal challenges and restricted movements hindered his ability to fulfill his responsibilities effectively. However, PTI’s leadership had rejected his resignation at that time, urging him to continue his work. Despite these setbacks, Azhar remained a vocal and active figure within PTI, leading a motorcycle rally in Lahore on Wednesday even though he is currently wanted by police in connection with over 50 cases.

In a detailed post on social media platform X, Azhar outlined the reasons behind his decision to step down. He expressed frustration over his inability to communicate directly with Imran Khan, a situation exacerbated by his restricted movements, which prevent him from visiting Adiala Jail where Khan is currently incarcerated. Azhar highlighted that many decisions regarding PTI’s Punjab organization were made without his input or consent, often driven by internal lobbying rather than merit.

“Unfortunately, I don’t have access to Imran Khan,” Azhar wrote. “Many decisions were taken in the organization of Punjab which neither included my opinion nor my consent. Most of these decisions were based on lobbying and limited access to Imran Khan and one-sided information instead of merit.”

Azhar also pointed to the recent efforts to replace Chaudhry Asghar as PTI Lahore President, a move he attributed to internal lobbying. He praised Asghar for his leadership over the past three months, during which he had been at the forefront of the party’s activities. However, Azhar lamented that Asghar’s opponents had succeeded in influencing Khan against him, a situation that he believes is emblematic of broader issues within the party.

“There are many other cases where there was clear injustice, wrong decisions were made, and in some regions, our leaders are very worried but Khan sahib is not even informed,” Azhar added.

Azhar emphasized that his decision to resign was rooted in his commitment to merit and fairness. He expressed his unwillingness to remove dedicated party members from their positions simply because they lacked direct access to Khan. Azhar argued that major organizational responsibilities should be entrusted only to those who have regular communication with the party chairman to ensure accurate and comprehensive reporting.

In a separate post, Azhar clarified that he has never been interested in holding a party position and only accepted the role of Punjab president at the insistence of the leadership. He reiterated his loyalty to Imran Khan and PTI, stating that he would continue to work for the party without holding any official position.

Azhar also addressed the communication challenges within PTI, noting the presence of three distinct groups within the party, each with its own interests and strategies. He urged Imran Khan to bring these factions together and ensure that no one deviates from the party’s core objectives.

“The issues are not so major that they can’t be fixed,” Azhar concluded, stressing the importance of resolving the access and communication issues to prevent further damage to the party.

“Ketamine Queen”: Key Findings from Matthew Perry Death Case

The death of Friends star Matthew Perry, found in a hot tub at his Los Angeles home on October 28, 2023, was initially presumed to be an accident. Perry had been treating depression with ketamine, and no foul play was suspected. However, recent arrests of five individuals, including medical doctors, Perry’s assistant, and an alleged drug dealer known as the “Ketamine Queen,” have uncovered a complex and sinister network of ketamine distribution that may have contributed to Perry’s demise and possibly others.

Among those arrested was Dr. Salvador Plasencia, accused of supplying Perry with ketamine. According to prosecutors, Dr. Plasencia displayed a disturbing lack of empathy, allegedly referring to Perry as “a moron” while pondering how much to overcharge him for the drug. He eventually sold it to the actor at more than 165 times its normal price.

A photo from the indictment showing alleged evidence discovered at what authorities have called the “Sangha stash house”

Central to the investigation is alleged dealer Jasveen Sangha, dubbed the “Ketamine Queen” by authorities. Sangha, 41, is accused of being a major supplier of ketamine to Perry, selling him 50 vials for approximately $11,000. Her North Hollywood home, referred to as the “Sangha Stash House” in court documents, was described as a “drug-selling emporium” where she allegedly packaged and distributed various drugs, including methamphetamine, cocaine, and Xanax, primarily to wealthy clients and celebrities. During a search of her home, more than 80 vials of ketamine, thousands of pills, and a handgun were discovered.

As Perry’s ketamine addiction deepened, he sought cheaper sources, leading him to street dealers and more elite providers. Prosecutors allege that those charged exploited Perry’s vulnerability, profiting from his addiction. Dr. Plasencia, for instance, allegedly charged Perry around $2,000 for vials that cost only $12 each. He reportedly wanted to become Perry’s “go-to” source for drugs and even taught Perry’s assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, how to inject ketamine, despite knowing that Perry’s addiction was spiraling out of control.

More News: Changan Launches New Electric Car Brand DEEPAL in Pakistan

Investigators revealed that Perry paid Dr. Plasencia a total of $55,000 for 20 vials of ketamine between September and October 2023. On one occasion, after administering a large dose that caused Perry to “freeze up” and experience a dangerous spike in blood pressure, Dr. Plasencia allegedly remarked, “Let’s not do that again,” but left more vials with Iwamasa.

Following Perry’s death, those involved allegedly attempted to cover their tracks. Sangha reportedly instructed another suspect to “delete all our messages,” while Eric Fleming, who has pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute drugs unlawfully, allegedly reassured her that they were “90% sure everyone is protected.” He expressed concerns about ketamine detection in the body, using coded language like “Dr Pepper” and “cans” to refer to the drug.

The investigation has also linked Sangha to a previous overdose death in 2019. According to court documents, Sangha sold ketamine to a man named Cody McLaury, who later died from an overdose. A family member of McLaury allegedly texted Sangha, accusing her of selling the ketamine that killed him. Days later, Sangha reportedly searched online for information about whether ketamine could be listed as a cause of death.

Iwamasa, Perry’s live-in assistant, was the one who discovered the actor’s body. He has since been charged with conspiracy to distribute ketamine resulting in death and serious bodily injury, a charge to which he has pleaded guilty. Prosecutors allege that Iwamasa, who had no medical training, administered more than 20 shots of ketamine to Perry in the four days leading up to his death, including three on the day he died.

The investigation has uncovered a disturbing pattern of exploitation, greed, and negligence surrounding Perry’s tragic death. As authorities continue to unravel the full extent of the illegal ketamine network, those involved now face serious charges, shedding light on the dark side of Hollywood’s drug culture.
