Typhoon Ampil hit eastern Japan on Friday, bringing strong winds and heavy rain that flooded streets, forced evacuations, and disrupted daily life in the greater Tokyo area. With maximum sustained winds of 132 miles per hour, Ampil, equivalent to a Category 4 hurricane, posed a serious threat to the region, prompting widespread warnings from Japanese authorities.

Bullet trains between Tokyo and Nagoya were canceled on Friday, while All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines grounded more than 670 flights, affecting over 120,000 passengers.

Oropouche Virus, Known as Sloth Fever, Detected in Europe

The Oropouche virus, also known as sloth fever, has made its debut in Europe this year with confirmed cases reported in Italy, Spain, and Germany. Originally identified in Trinidad and Tobago in 1955, this virus, which was previously unknown in Europe, has now spread to the continent through travelers who had recently visited Cuba.

In June and July of 2024, Spain recorded twelve cases of the Oropouche virus. All affected individuals had traveled to Cuba prior to their diagnosis. Germany reported two cases, and Italy reported five, with a notable pattern emerging: eighteen of the nineteen cases were linked to Cuba, while one was associated with Brazil. There is no evidence to suggest that the virus has spread locally within Europe.

The symptoms of the Oropouche virus closely resemble those of dengue fever, malaria, and the Zika virus. These symptoms include fever, headache, and joint pain. Although rare, the virus can be fatal. Health officials are monitoring the situation closely and have advised residents to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms, even though there have been no verified cases in the UK.

In Italy, two patients who had traveled to Cuba earlier this year were admitted to hospitals with symptoms consistent with the Oropouche virus. A 26-year-old woman who returned from the Cuban region of Ciego de Avila presented with fever and diarrhea upon arriving in Verona on May 26. Similarly, a 45-year-old man sought medical care in Fori, Italy, on June 7 after experiencing symptoms following visits to Havana and Santiago de Cuba.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has assessed the risk of the Oropouche virus spreading within the European Union and the European Economic Area as extremely low. However, the ECDC has stressed the importance of vigilance and prompt medical consultation if symptoms are present.

The virus was first identified in Trinidad and Tobago in 1955, named after the Oropouche River in the region. While the virus is not new, its appearance in Europe marks a significant development in its geographic spread. The medical community remains on high alert to monitor and manage the situation effectively.

Petrol Prices to Drop Significantly in Pakistan

Pakistan may witness another notable reduction in petrol prices starting August 15, following a decline in global oil prices, Day News reported on Monday, citing sources.

According to the sources, the price of petrol could decrease by over Rs9 per litre, while high-speed diesel (HSD) may see a reduction of up to Rs8.50 per litre. Additionally, kerosene oil is likely to become cheaper by Rs12 per litre.

The final decision on these price adjustments will be made by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, in consultation with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. This follows a recent move by the federal government to reduce fuel prices in the previous fortnight. Specifically, petrol prices were slashed by Rs6.17 per litre, and HSD by Rs10.86 per litre.

Currently, petrol is being sold at Rs 269.43 per litre, while HSD is priced at Rs 272.77 per litre. Kerosene oil, on the other hand, is available at Rs177.39 per litre, slightly up from its earlier price of Rs173.48.

Former ISI Chief General Faiz Hameed Taken into Custody, ISPR

Former intelligence chief Faiz Hameed has been placed in military custody, and proceedings for his court martial have begun related to the Top City housing scheme scandal, the army’s media wing announced on Monday.

This marks a historic first in the country, as it is the first time a court martial has been initiated against a former spymaster.

According to a press release from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), a comprehensive court of inquiry was conducted by the Pakistan Army to verify the complaints lodged against Lt Gen Faiz Hameed (Retd) concerning the Top City case. Following the inquiry, appropriate disciplinary measures have been taken under the Pakistan Army Act.

The ISPR further stated that several violations of the Pakistan Army Act by Lt Gen Faiz Hameed (Retd) post-retirement were confirmed. Consequently, the Field General Court Martial process has commenced, and Lt Gen Hameed is now in military custody.

An inquiry committee was established in April to probe allegations of authority misuse by the former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief. The committee, formed by the military as a self-accountability measure, is headed by a serving major general and operates under Supreme Court and Defence Ministry directives.

The Supreme Court, in a November 14 order, emphasized that the allegations against Lt Gen Faiz Hameed were of a serious nature and required thorough investigation to prevent damage to the reputation of national institutions.

The Top City housing scheme management accused the former ISI chief General Faiz Hameed of orchestrating a raid on its owner’s offices and residence. In response, the Supreme Court had directed the housing society owner to seek redressal through the relevant authorities.

Huawei Launches Regional ICT Talent Finals in Uzbekistan

Huawei, in partnership with the Ministry of Digital Technologies of the Republic of Uzbekistan and key stakeholders such as the IT Education Association, telecom regulators, labor authorities, and vocational training organizations, has officially kicked off the regional finals of its esteemed “Seeds for the Future” program.

This prestigious initiative, designed for university students across the Middle East and Central Asia, aims to enhance digital knowledge, foster international collaboration, and nurture the next generation of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) talent.

Opening Ceremony Highlights

The opening ceremony, held at the Ministry of Digital Technologies in Uzbekistan, was a grand affair attended by senior government officials and industry leaders, underscoring the importance of this event. The week-long program brings together around 150 students from 14 countries, including Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Uzbekistan. These young minds represent the future of the ICT industry and have gathered to gain new skills, share knowledge, and build connections that transcend borders.

H.E. Sherzod Shermatov, Minister of Digital Technologies of the Republic of Uzbekistan, delivered the opening address, welcoming the students and dignitaries. He emphasized the significance of this initiative in expanding global collaboration within the ICT sector. “The launch of the Seeds for the Future today is one of the greatest steps towards the expansion of global collaboration in the ICT field. We are glad to have a partner like Huawei that understands the need for nurturing digital talents and creating an advanced platform for building a digital and green world,” he said.

Seeds for the Future is Huawei’s flagship Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, aimed at developing ICT talents worldwide. Since its inception in 2008, the program has seen participation from over 18,000 students across 141 countries. It has received endorsements from more than 360 senior officials and heads of state and has partnered with over 500 universities and colleges to cultivate a new generation of ICT leaders and innovators.

A Week of Learning and Cultural Exchange

Throughout the week, participants will engage in intensive training sessions and workshops on cutting-edge ICT technologies, such as 5G, AI, and cloud computing. These sessions are designed to deepen their understanding of these technologies, enhance their leadership skills, and prepare them for future opportunities in the ICT sector. Additionally, the program includes discussions on global topics, as well as Tech4Good group projects, which challenge students to devise innovative solutions to pressing social issues using ICT.

To further strengthen the collaboration between countries and cultures, the program also features a series of cultural activities and sightseeing tours in Uzbekistan. A notable event was the “Global Village” cultural showcase held at Amity University in Tashkent. Here, each participating team presented their country’s cultural heritage, traditions, national attire, and cuisine. The Minister of Digital Technologies of the Republic of Uzbekistan visited each booth, taking the opportunity to engage with the students and learn more about their diverse backgrounds.

Tech4Good Competition

The Tech4Good competition, held in conjunction with the Seeds for the Future program, is another highlight of the week. This competition aims to empower youth to drive positive change within their communities by harnessing the potential of ICT. Students participating in Tech4Good will present their projects to a panel of judges, with two standout teams being selected to advance to the Global Finals in China next year.

This unique platform encourages young minds to leverage technological advancements to address social challenges. By fostering a generation of solution-oriented individuals, the program seeks to create lasting impacts that will contribute to a better future for all.

The regional finals “Seeds for the Future” by Huawei program in Uzbekistan mark a significant milestone in fostering global digital inclusion and nurturing ICT talent across the Middle East and Central Asia. CM Sindh Visits Indus Motor, Backs Industrial Growth

The Chief Minister of Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah, visited Indus Motor Company’s (IMC) manufacturing facility at Port Qasim Authority, Karachi on 12th August 2024, underscoring Sindh government’s commitment to continue fostering large-scale industrial growth in the province.

During his visit, Chief Minister Shah toured IMC’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility and was briefed on the latest production processes utilized, including their globally renowned Toyota Production System.

The Chief Minister was briefed on IMC’s recent export initiatives. Last year, the company has successfully begun exporting raw materials to Egypt, marking a significant milestone in becoming a part of Toyota’s Global Supply Chain. Additionally, IMC has recently commenced the export of Toyota vehicles to Oceanian countries; the export line-up includes the Toyota Fortuner, Hilux and Corolla Cross model.

The Chief Minister expressed his admiration for IMC’s efforts in spearheading the production of HEVs in Pakistan. “Indus Motor has set a benchmark in the automotive industry with its dedication to innovation and sustainability. The heavy financial investment in the impressive, state of-the-art Plant and human capital speaks volumes of the company’s focus on the quality and safety of its products.

The provincial government is keen to continue supporting such initiatives that not only drive economic growth but also promote environmental responsibility not only in Sindh, but across the country. We will continue to work closely with stakeholders from the local auto industry to ensure a conducive environment”, said Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah.

Ali Asghar Jamali, CEO, Indus Motor Company, welcomed the Chief Minister and emphasized the need for stable policies to sustain growth in the automotive sector. “It’s an honor to have the Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah visit us at the Plant. His presence reaffirms the government’s support for industrial growth. This exchange of knowledge and expertise not only benefits the individuals but also positions Pakistan as a hub of skilled labor in the global automotive industry.”

He further shared, “For continued success, we request the government’s support in maintaining consistent long-term policies that promote investment and development in the automotive industry, along with curbing the illegally imported used cars, which have been brought heavily into the country in FY23-24.”

The visit concluded with the Chief Minister pledging to promote small and medium vendor industries, which could provide raw materials for auto parts not currently being produced in the country, allowing further increase in parts localization for the local auto industry which would reduce dependence on imports.

KATI Demands Release of PKR 33 Billion Electricity Subsidy

The Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) has called on the government to immediately release a pending PKR 33 billion electricity subsidy crucial for Karachi’s industrial sector. Addressing an emergency press conference, KATI President Johar Qandhari emphasized the urgent need to address the discrimination faced by Karachi’s industries, which have been deprived of a significant portion of a subsidy initially approved to support them during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Qandhari revealed that the subsidy, termed the COVID Incremental Subsidy, totaled PKR 42 billion over three years: PKR 22 billion for 2021-22, PKR 13 billion for 2022-23, and PKR 7 billion for 2023-24. However, despite this allocation, only PKR 7 to 9 billion has been disbursed to Karachi, leaving a staggering PKR 33 billion pending. In contrast, industries in other regions received their full subsidy, enabling them to offer products at more competitive prices, further disadvantaging Karachi’s industrialists.

Flanked by notable industry leaders, including Senator Abdul Haseeb Khan, KATI Deputy Patron-in-Chief Zubair Chhaya, Senior Vice President Nighat Awan, and Vice President Muslim Mohammadi, Standing Committee Chairman Danish Khan, Rehan Javed, Former President and Chairman Ehteshamuddin and others were also present. Qandhari expressed frustration over the delay, he attributed it to ongoing disputes between the government and K-Electric, which have disproportionately affected Karachi’s industries.

Qandhari criticized the delay in subsidy distribution, attributing it to ongoing disputes between the government and K-Electric. He noted that this delay has forced Karachi’s industrialists to sell their products at a loss, as they are paying more than PKR 50 per unit for electricity, compared to PKR 30-32 per unit for industries in other parts of the country.

In a direct appeal to Federal Minister for Energy Owais Leghari and Minister of State Muhammad Ali, Qandhari demanded an end to the discrimination against Karachi’s industries. He also called for the immediate abolition of the PKR 3.23 per unit Power Holding Limited (PHL) charge and the PKR 1.52 per unit surcharge levied exclusively on Karachi consumers. He pointed out that these charges, linked to the Circular Debt, are not justified, as Karachi’s consumers have no involvement in this debt.

Qandhari also proposed that the government supply an additional 100 mmcfd of gas from the Mari Gas field to K-Electric. This would enable the generation of cheaper electricity, potentially reducing the cost per unit by PKR 13.98. He noted that electricity currently being generated from RLNG for Karachi is the most expensive in the country, costing between PKR 26.93 to PKR 38 per unit, due to the high price of RLNG at PKR 3600 per mmbtu.

Deputy Patron-in-Chief Zubair Chhaya warned that if the subsidy is not released soon, industrialists may be left with no option but to resort to protests, including sit-ins and demonstrations. Senator Abdul Haseeb Khan and Rehan Javed also addressed the event, echoing the urgent need for government intervention to prevent further damage to Karachi’s industrial sector and, by extension, the national economy.

Climber Murad Sadpara Dies After Rescue Attempt on Broad Peak

On Monday morning, climber Murad Sadpara tragically succumbed to injuries after a rescue operation by the Pakistan Army was launched to save him on Broad Peak in Gilgit-Baltistan. Broad Peak, standing at 8,051 meters, is the world’s 12th highest mountain and is known for its treacherous terrain and harsh weather, which often result in fatalities among climbers.

Sadpara, who was working as a guide for a Portuguese climber, slipped at an altitude of around 5,000 meters on Sunday. The accident occurred during the descent, near Camp 1, when Sadpara was struck on the head by a loose rock. Despite the efforts to rescue him, the challenging conditions made a quick rescue impossible, leading to his untimely death.

The accident highlights the dangers of high-altitude climbing, where even the most experienced climbers are at constant risk. Just last month, two Japanese climbers went missing on K2, and another climber died after falling into a crevice on Golden Peak in the same region. These incidents serve as stark reminders of the perils faced by mountaineers in the Karakoram Range, where some of the world’s highest and most dangerous peaks are located.

Karrar Haidri, the secretary of the Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP), confirmed Sadpara’s death, stating that the harsh conditions on the mountain delayed rescue efforts. He described Sadpara as a courageous and selfless individual who left behind a lasting legacy, as well as a grieving family, including three daughters and a son.

Sadpara had recently participated in a notable mission to retrieve the body of Hassan Shigri, a porter who died on K2 the previous year. This mission underscored his dedication to the climbing community, where he was known for his bravery and commitment.

Mountaineer Naila Kiani, who had sought the army’s help to rescue Sadpara, provided additional details about the incident. She explained that the Portuguese climber had hired Sadpara and a Nepali Sherpa for the summit. When the climber fell ill, the team had to turn back without reaching the peak. During their descent, Sadpara was struck by the rock, which ultimately led to his death. Although he was wearing a helmet and was roped in, the rock’s size likely caused fatal internal injuries.

The rescue mission, carried out by the Pakistan Army, involved six local rescuers and mountaineers, including climbers from Sadpara village in Skardu and Shagar. Despite their best efforts, the challenging environment and logistical difficulties hindered a timely rescue. Sadpara’s body was eventually moved to a Japanese camp on the mountain and was expected to be transported to Skardu via an army helicopter later that day.

The news of Sadpara’s death brought an outpouring of grief and condolences from various leaders and the climbing community. President Asif Ali Zardari expressed his sorrow and praised Sadpara’s contributions to mountain climbing, while Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Gulbar Khan called him a “brave adventurist” whose services would always be remembered.

Naila Kiani, heartbroken by the loss, posted a tribute to Sadpara on Facebook, highlighting his heroism in rescuing others and his recent efforts to bring down Hassan Shigri’s body from K2. She also thanked the climbers and the army who assisted in the rescue operation but expressed frustration over the delays caused by administrative issues.

Kiani called for revising the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for handling such incidents to avoid future delays. She also suggested granting a no-objection certificate for a private helicopter service or allowing Askar Aviation to purchase private helicopters. This, she argued, would enable climbers to have access to flexible and timely rescue operations, reducing reliance on military resources and potentially saving more lives in the future.
