Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Ameer Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has issued a stark warning to the government, expressing frustration over the escalating electricity bills that have left citizens burdened and demanding immediate relief. Speaking at a protest sit-in outside the Sindh Governor House in Karachi on Monday, Rehman emphasized the urgent need for action.
Addressing a crowd of protesters, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman criticized the government’s handling of the electricity crisis and its agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs). He warned that if the government fails to meet the demands of the people, it risks pushing them toward extreme measures similar to those seen in Sri Lanka or Bangladesh.
“We do not seek confrontation,” Rehman said, “but we will not be forced into taking drastic actions. The government must address our concerns immediately.”
Rehman called for a comprehensive review of the agreements made with IPPs, demanding transparency regarding the terms of these deals and accountability for any financial losses incurred by the country. He also urged the government to abolish taxes on essential items such as flour, sugar, and stationery to provide immediate relief to the populace.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has announced an extraordinary meeting of its Executive Committee at the level of Foreign Ministers on August 7. The meeting, to be held at the OIC General Secretariat in Jeddah, aims to address the ongoing atrocities and war crimes committed by Israel in Palestine.
The OIC will discuss the continued crimes of the Israeli occupation against the Palestinian people, including the recent assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, a senior political leader. The meeting will also focus on Israel’s aggressions against the sovereignty of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
“In response to the ongoing atrocities committed by the Israeli occupation against the Palestinian people, particularly in the Gaza Strip, this meeting has been convened,” stated the OIC Secretariat on Monday.

Lieutenant General Ahmad Sharif Chaudhry, the Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR), reaffirmed that the military’s stance on the violent protests of May 9 remains unchanged. Speaking at a media briefing at Rawalpindi’s General Headquarters (GHQ), Lt Gen Chaudhry emphasized that those involved in the riots must be held accountable.
“Army’s stance on [May 9] is clear, which was conveyed in the May 7 [2024] press conference. There has been no change in that nor will there be,” he stated.
The May 9 riots erupted in several parts of the country, particularly in garrison towns, following the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan. Mobs vandalized private and public properties, including military installations. In a press conference marking the first anniversary of the riots, the DG ISPR insisted that the perpetrators and facilitators of the May 9 riots need to be punished as per the Constitution and law to maintain the credibility and faith in the country’s justice system.
Today, Lt Gen Chaudhry reiterated this stance, highlighting the army’s commitment to addressing “digital terrorism” and propaganda aimed at driving a wedge between the armed forces and the public.
“First of all, the first line of defense against digital terrorism is the law. Unfortunately, the falsehood and propaganda are very high on social media, as fake news and doctored images are posted to create confusion in the minds of the people,” he said.
“The law is not taking its course against it, but the armed forces take it very seriously,” he added, stressing that legal action will be taken against those involved in running propaganda against the military, whether they are in Pakistan or abroad.
Addressing questions about a US resolution, Lt Gen Chaudhry stated that the army is aware of who is running and facilitating the campaign against Pakistan and the motives behind it.
“We also know who are the state and non-state elements proliferating this campaign,” he said. He further revealed that since January 2024, 127 articles have been written in foreign print media alone, aimed at spreading hopelessness and anarchy in Pakistan and promoting a specific political agenda. The coordinated efforts behind this campaign include political lobbying, meetings, and protests outside embassies.
Lt Gen Chaudhry criticized those behind the propaganda for not raising their voices against the genocide in Gaza and Palestine, or the exploitation of Kashmiris by a one-million-strong Indian army in IIOJK.
“If these elements have so much money, coordination, and access, they should work on creating a narrative of rising Pakistan, its potential, and its status,” he said.

KARACHI: The likelihood of reducing high electricity prices in Pakistan appears bleak as the government continues to use electricity and petroleum products as key revenue generators. Independent power producers (IPPs) operate without sufficient oversight, contributing to the ongoing energy crisis. These issues were highlighted by experts during a media briefing titled “Pakistan Energy Crisis and IPPs: How Overbilling Impacts Quality of Life and Pathways to Solution” at the Applied Economics Research Centre (AERC), University of Karachi, on Thursday.
Dr. Aamir Siddiqui, an assistant professor at AERC, emphasized that electricity charges are unlikely to decrease soon because the government relies heavily on petrol and electricity for revenue. Despite the presence of around 100 IPPs in the country, electricity prices continue to rise instead of stabilizing. He pointed out that Pakistan generates more power than it needs, yet load shedding persists due to the government’s failure to negotiate better terms with the IPPs or revise their agreements, even though the IPPs are paid in dollars or equivalent amounts.
Government Prioritizes Revenue Over Public Welfare
Dr. Muhammad Sabir, principal economist at the Social Policy and Development Centre in Karachi, stated that electricity tariffs would not drop until the government prioritizes public welfare over its own interests. He criticized many of the agreements with the IPPs as being poorly thought out, noting that some IPPs that do not supply power are still paid in full and on time.
Impact on Low and Middle-Income Households
Assistant Professor Dr. Fauzia Sohail from AERC highlighted the severe impact of overbilling and high electricity costs on low and middle-income households. She explained that rising electricity charges force families to cut down on essential expenditures such as health, education, food, and transportation. This financial strain pushes some families below the poverty line, particularly in Karachi. Dr. Sohail called for government compensation to low-income households for health and education to mitigate the adverse effects on people’s lives and the country’s economy.
The K-Electric Issue
M.Phil scholar Rao Asad addressed the specific issue of K-Electric, accusing the company of overbilling to manage its electricity shortfall through load shedding. He argued that K-Electric suppresses electricity demand in Karachi because it cannot generate enough power to meet the city’s needs.
Experts also pointed out that many IPPs are owned, directly or indirectly, by individuals who are part of past and present governments. This connection prevents strict action against underperforming IPPs. Dr. Asghar Ali, who moderated the event, claimed that audits of IPPs are rarely conducted in Pakistan, contributing to the current problematic situation.
Proposed Solutions
The experts suggested several solutions, including renegotiating agreements with IPPs, considering their nationalization, implementing financial and social support programs, and restructuring K-Electric into separate generation and distribution companies. These measures are crucial for addressing the ongoing energy crisis and alleviating the burden on households.
The briefing also featured insights from AERC Director Prof. Dr. Nooreen Mujahid and Shahzad Qamar, CEO of the Ataleeq Foundation, who emphasized the need for immediate and effective action to tackle the high electricity prices and their impact on the quality of life in Pakistan.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan informed US President Joe Biden that Israel is not interested in a ceasefire in Gaza, highlighting that the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh has severely hindered ceasefire efforts. Erdogan criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government for consistently opposing a ceasefire and expressed deep disappointment following Netanyahu’s recent address to the US Congress.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken discussed the importance of a Gaza ceasefire with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud. They also emphasized the need for Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces to engage in ceasefire talks this month.
Biden Reaffirms US Support for Israel Amid Rising Tensions
President Biden reassured Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu of the US commitment to defending Israel against threats from Iran, following the assassination of a top Hamas leader in Tehran. Biden, along with Vice President Kamala Harris, stressed efforts to de-escalate regional tensions. The leaders’ call came after Israel announced the elimination of Hezbollah military commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut.
As tensions rise, the US sent the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt to the Persian Gulf with six Navy ships carrying missiles. Five Navy ships are already in the Mediterranean Sea. US spy planes flew over Syria, Lebanon, and Israel to collect intelligence data.
Erdogan-Pakistan Declare National Mourning for Haniyeh
In response to Haniyeh’s death, Erdogan declared a national day of mourning, showing solidarity with the Palestinian cause. Pakistan also announced a day of mourning, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif calling for a funeral prayer in absentia for Haniyeh and condemning the Israeli actions as a tragedy for the Muslim world.
The UNRWA has launched its “back to learning” program in Gaza to help children affected by the conflict. Despite efforts to protect civilians, Israeli forces hit a school in Gaza City, resulting in multiple casualties.
The military claimed that Hamas fighters used the school as a hideout.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Foreign Office condemned the assassination of Haniyeh, calling it a violation of international law and warning it could further escalate tensions. They urged holding Israel accountable for its actions that threaten regional security.
Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political and Public Affairs, Rana Sanaullah, stated that PTI founder Imran Khan’s release does not depend on the verdict of the iddat case. This comment comes just two days after Khan received relief in the cipher case.
Speaking on Geo News’ “Capital Talk,” Sanaullah addressed questions about the former prime minister’s potential release from other cases following the Islamabad High Court’s decision in the cipher case. He emphasized that Khan’s release is not contingent on the iddat case outcome, though he noted that Pakistani law allows for the benefit of the doubt to be given to the accused.
Sanaullah mentioned that doubts can be raised in seemingly straightforward matters, as seen in the cipher case, and similar doubts might arise in the iddat case. He argued that while the iddat case is labeled as a personal matter, public figures like Khan have no private affairs. He also pointed out that Khan is implicated in cases where confessions have been made.
Regarding future legal actions, Sanaullah confirmed that new cases would be filed against Khan. He hinted at a potential case linked to a controversial post by Khan on social media, which the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) anti-cybercrime team has started investigating. The post encouraged Pakistanis to read the Hamood ur Rahman Commission Report to discern the true traitor between General Yahya Khan and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Sanaullah asserted that PTI has pushed the country to a critical point, leaving only two paths: democratic dialogue or confrontation. He stressed that while democratic parties have always been open to talks, PTI has not responded to these overtures.
Imran Khan has been detained in Adiala Jail since August 2023, with several PTI members facing allegations related to violence following his arrest on May 9. Khan, who served as prime minister from 2018 to 2022 before being ousted via a no-confidence motion, received relief in the cipher case when the Islamabad High Court overturned his sentence and ordered his release.
