Nationwide Crackdown Ordered on Human Trafficking Networks

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has launched a decisive crackdown on human trafficking across Pakistan. The announcement came during a high-level meeting in Islamabad on Tuesday, where he issued strong directives to law enforcement agencies to dismantle trafficking networks and combat cybercrime with full force.

Nationwide Operation Against Traffickers

Speaking to the newly appointed Director General of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Riffat Mukhtar Raja, and the Director General of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), Waqaruddin Syed, Naqvi stressed the need for immediate and coordinated action. He called on both agencies to launch a countrywide operation targeting illegal immigration and organized human trafficking rings.

Naqvi emphasized that traffickers exploit vulnerable individuals and pose a serious threat to national security. He instructed the FIA to develop a comprehensive and effective strategy to halt illegal immigration routes used by traffickers.

Unified Action by Law Enforcement

The minister directed all law enforcement institutions to work in close coordination. He said the crackdown must be relentless and leave no room for organized criminal activity, particularly illegal border crossings and fraudulent visa rackets.

“Illegal immigration and human smuggling not only damage Pakistan’s global image but also lead to immense human suffering,” Naqvi stated. He warned that all those involved, from facilitators to ringleaders, will face strict legal action.

Focus on Cybercrime and Digital Offenses

Alongside the human trafficking crackdown, Naqvi addressed the growing threat of cybercrime. He instructed NCCIA’s leadership to step up efforts to combat digital offenses, including identity theft, online fraud, and trafficking coordination through the dark web and encrypted platforms.

He also announced plans to upgrade the capacity of the cybercrime agency. Officers will receive specialized training abroad to stay ahead of evolving digital threats. “Enhancing cyber investigation tools is essential for targeting tech-enabled criminal networks,” he added.

Strong Political Will

Minister of State Talal Chaudhry echoed Naqvi’s stance and reinforced the government’s zero-tolerance policy toward human traffickers. “Those who traffic in human misery deserve no leniency,” Chaudhry said. He underscored the urgency of coordinated government action to root out the issue.

Building International Support

Officials hinted at future cooperation with international partners for intelligence-sharing and law enforcement collaboration. The government aims to engage with countries affected by trafficking routes to shut down safe havens for smuggling networks.

This push comes amid growing global scrutiny of migration practices and human rights concerns, making Pakistan’s actions even more critical.

The crackdown on human trafficking is expected to intensify in the coming weeks, with joint operations planned across major cities and border regions. As law enforcement gears up, the Interior Ministry is signaling its determination to make Pakistan a tougher environment for traffickers and cybercriminals alike.

Microsoft Fires Employees Over Palestine Protest

Microsoft has dismissed two software engineers for disrupting its 50th anniversary events with protests against the company’s contracts with the Israeli military. The Microsoft-Palestine protest controversy has ignited a broader conversation about the role of Big Tech in global conflicts and the limits of workplace activism.

Engineers Protest Company’s Role in Conflict

Ibtihal Aboussad, a Canadian engineer in Microsoft’s AI division, interrupted a keynote speech by Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman in Redmond, Washington. During the livestreamed event, she called him a “war profiteer” and accused the company of “powering this genocide in our region.” She threw a keffiyeh scarf onstage before being escorted out by security.

Soon after, Aboussad emailed top Microsoft executives, including Satya Nadella and Brad Smith, stating she could no longer remain silent after discovering her team’s involvement in military AI targeting used by Israel. She was promptly informed that her employment had been terminated.

Immediate Dismissals for “Misconduct”

Microsoft said the protest amounted to “wilful misconduct” and disrupted an important business event.

Vaniya Agrawal, a US-based software engineer, also participated in a protest during a separate session featuring CEO Satya Nadella. Though she had already submitted her resignation effective April 11, Microsoft accelerated her exit and made it immediate.

Context of the Protests

While Microsoft has not confirmed specific details, it emphasized that employee feedback is welcome—but must not interrupt business operations.

Pattern of Employee Dissent

This is not the first time Microsoft has faced employee dissent. In February, five staff members were removed from a meeting with Nadella after voicing similar concerns. Across the tech industry, tensions have grown over military contracts.

In 2024, Google fired dozens of workers involved in sit-ins against Project Nimbus, a $1.2 billion cloud and AI deal with the Israeli government. Microsoft’s own partnership with OpenAI has come under renewed scrutiny as its applications in defense expand.

Backlash and Advocacy

Rights groups and labor advocates have condemned Microsoft’s actions, calling the dismissals retaliation against employees acting in conscience.

The Afghan refugee repatriation process continues to gain momentum, with 4,966 Afghan nationals departing for Afghanistan on Sunday night alone, according to an official report.

Breakdown of Departures

The report revealed that among the total number of refugees, 1,698 individuals possessed Afghan Citizen Cards (ACC), while the remaining 3,268 were unregistered residents in Pakistan.

Deportations Continue Late into the Night

Officials involved in the repatriation confirmed that the deportation process extended late into Sunday night. As a result, data for those who left on Monday has not yet been finalized. Authorities expect to release updated figures once the Monday count is verified.

Total Repatriations Since September 2023

Since September 2023, a total of 484,975 Afghan refugees have returned to Afghanistan, the report noted. Of these, the vast majority—473,841 individuals—returned voluntarily, signaling a willingness among many to reunite with their homeland. The remaining 11,134 were deported through various points in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a key region in the cross-border movement.

South Korea Sets June 3 for Snap Election After Yoon’s Impeachment

South Korea has officially announced a snap presidential election for June 3, following last week’s dramatic removal of President Yoon Suk Yeol. The impeachment has plunged the nation into political uncertainty and opened the door for a wide field of contenders vying to lead Asia’s fourth-largest economy.

Power Vacuum Amid Crisis

Yoon’s ouster came after he declared martial law in December—an unprecedented move that shocked the country and led to his impeachment by parliament. The Constitutional Court upheld the decision, citing his abuse of power and illegal mobilization of troops to stop parliamentary proceedings.

The political vacuum at the top has delayed key negotiations with the U.S., especially amid growing tensions over trade policies under U.S. President Donald Trump and economic pressures at home.

Acting President Han Duck-soo confirmed the election date during a cabinet meeting, stating that political parties need time to prepare. “The government intends to designate June 3 as the 21st presidential election day,” he said.

Candidates Begin to Emerge

Several candidates have already stepped forward. Kim Moon-soo, Yoon’s former labor minister, resigned from his post on Tuesday and announced his intention to run. Though not currently a member of Yoon’s People Power Party (PPP), Kim is polling higher than most conservative figures.

“I resigned because the people want change,” Kim said. “We face a severe national crisis that’s affecting everyone. I feel responsible to step up.”

Also entering the race is Ahn Cheol-soo, a veteran lawmaker from the PPP and one of the first to vote for Yoon’s impeachment. Ahn, who has run in the last three presidential elections, promised a clean and modern campaign focused on technology and economic reform. He aims to use artificial intelligence and innovation to boost growth amid rising U.S. tariffs.

“I am a cleaner candidate than anyone else,” Ahn stated. “This is a chance to correct course and protect our economy.”

Despite his experience, Ahn has struggled in recent polls and is currently trailing behind stronger contenders.

Lee Jae-myung Leads the Pack

The current front-runner is Lee Jae-myung, leader of the liberal Democratic Party. He narrowly lost to Yoon in the 2022 election and now leads polls with 34% support, according to a recent Gallup survey.

Lee is expected to resign from his party leadership role soon and officially announce his candidacy. However, his path is complicated by ongoing legal battles, including charges of election law violations and bribery. Still, his populist message and strong base give him a solid edge.

Other conservative hopefuls include former PPP leader Han Dong-hoon, Daegu mayor Hong Joon-pyo, and Seoul mayor Oh Se-hoon, though none have gained significant traction so far.

Unfinished Business

Yoon’s impeachment marks the second time in recent history that a conservative South Korean president has been removed from office. Park Geun-hye faced a similar fate in 2017 over a corruption scandal.

Yoon’s legal troubles are far from over. He now faces criminal charges of insurrection, with his trial set to begin on April 14. Until the election, Acting President Han will remain in charge, following the court’s decision to overturn his brief impeachment.

The June 3 election is expected to shape not only South Korea’s domestic policies but also its foreign strategy amid shifting global alliances and economic uncertainty.

Pakistan Eyes Economic Freedom Through Mineral Wealth

At the Pakistan Minerals Investment Forum 2025, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif declared that mineral resources in Pakistan could help the country break free from IMF dependency. Speaking at the Jinnah Convention Centre in Islamabad, the premier emphasized that unlocking the full potential of the nation’s natural wealth could pave the way to sustainable economic independence.

Rich Resources, Stronger Future

Highlighting the country’s vast untapped reserves, the prime minister said that from Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to Punjab, Sindh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir, every region holds valuable mineral deposits. With trillions of dollars’ worth of resources beneath its soil, Pakistan, he stressed, can shift from borrowing to building.

“The progress on the Reko Diq project is a sign of our potential,” Shehbaz said. “If we use our mineral wealth wisely, we can not only eliminate our debt but also create jobs and drive long-term development.”

Creating Jobs and Exporting Value

PM Shehbaz underlined that the mining sector in Balochistan, in particular, offers a path to economic growth through job creation and industrial development. He urged investors to focus on producing value-added goods rather than exporting raw materials.

“Exporting finished products will boost revenues and reduce dependence on imports,” he noted, adding that using local coal instead of imported coal is already helping conserve foreign exchange.

He also encouraged both public and private sectors to invest in technical education for the youth. “We will promote skill development in mining and related industries. Investors must help equip our youth with the training needed to support this transformation.”

A Global Investment Magnet

The forum saw active participation from global delegations, including representatives from Saudi Arabia, the United States, China, Europe, Finland, and the Asian Development Bank. Multiple memorandums of understanding (MoUs) were signed between Pakistan and foreign companies, signaling renewed international interest in the country’s mining potential.

Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar also addressed the event. He stressed that Pakistan’s reserves of gold, copper, and other minerals can fuel sustainable growth. “This is a pivotal moment for our economy. We need major investments to unlock this potential,” he said.

Dar added that international confidence in Pakistan’s economy is growing, and with the right strategy, mineral extraction can become a backbone of national progress.

High-Level Support and Sectoral Commitment

Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir and senior officials from key nations also attended the forum. U.S. representative Eric Meyer and leaders from Saudi gold and development organizations showed keen interest in collaborating with Pakistan.

Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal said Balochistan is central to Pakistan’s mineral economy. “Foreign participation in the forum reflects growing trust in our market,” he stated.

Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervez Malik echoed this optimism. He emphasized the government’s determination to fully utilize the country’s natural assets and make legal frameworks more investor-friendly.

“The goal is to simplify processes and ensure Pakistan becomes a hub for mineral investment,” he concluded.

Collaborative Strategy in the Works

During the meeting, Minister Jam Kamal Khan invited industry representatives to share their insights and suggestions. He emphasized the need for joint efforts in shaping Pakistan’s response to international trade shifts.

“This is not just a government responsibility—it is a national responsibility,” he said. “Your input is critical in designing a strategy that is both practical and beneficial.”

He reassured exporters that the Ministry of Commerce will continue engaging with them regularly and keep them informed of all developments.

Positive Momentum Going Forward

The meeting ended on a hopeful note. Exporters expressed renewed confidence in the government’s leadership and pledged their full cooperation.

The initiative reflects a broader shift toward inclusive policymaking in Pakistan’s trade sector. It also signals Pakistan’s intention to strengthen its global trade position through effective diplomacy and private-sector collaboration.

The Ministry of Commerce is expected to unveil the first draft of its U.S. tariff response plan later this month. Further consultations with industry stakeholders are also planned.

The session marked a key milestone in Pakistan’s efforts to build trade resilience and enhance competitiveness on the global stage.

NRL Discovers Major Copper-Gold Reserves in Chagai, Balochistan

Karachi: National Resources Limited (NRL) has discovered significant copper-gold mineralization in Chagai, Balochistan. Muhammad Ali Tabba, Chairman of NRL and CEO of Lucky Cement, announced the breakthrough at the Pakistan Minerals Investment Forum 2025.

NRL is a 100% Pakistani-owned private company. It operates under Fatima Fertilizer, Liberty Mills Limited, and Lucky Cement. The company was granted a mining lease in October 2023. The licensed area already included two known porphyry prospects with high exploration potential.

New Discoveries and Drilling Results

In just 15 months, NRL identified 18 new exploration prospects. One of them, “Tang Kaur,” has shown rapid progress. It is now at an advanced drilling stage.

Mr. Tabba reported that NRL completed 13 diamond drill holes totaling 3,517 meters. All drill holes intersected porphyry-style alteration and sulfide mineralization. Assay results from six holes (1,500 meters) show strongly mineralized, near-surface zones. Downhole intervals range from 48 to 148 meters using a 0.2% copper cut-off grade.

The average grades include 0.23% to 0.48% copper, 0.09 to 0.14 grams per ton (g/t) gold, and 1.30 to 6.21 g/t silver. These results yield a copper equivalent of 0.28% to 0.56%. The mineralized zone remains open to the north, east, and at depth.

Next Steps in Exploration

Advanced drilling at Tang Kaur is scheduled for May 2025. NRL plans to release an NI 43-101 Technical Report by the end of the year. International consultants are already reviewing the site. The company will continue with 3 to 4 years of in-depth exploration and feasibility studies.

NRL has also obtained a Lead-Zinc exploration license adjacent to a proven deposit. A Bankable Feasibility Study already exists for that site. NRL is evaluating downstream processing to establish a complete metal value chain.

Commitment to Local Communities

NRL emphasizes local development and sustainability. Over 90% of its workforce is from local communities. The company supports clean water, education, healthcare, and local businesses in the region.

“Mining only succeeds when local communities benefit directly,” said Mr. Tabba. He also highlighted NRL’s collaboration with universities and research institutions.

Future Expansion and Investments

NRL is working closely with the Government of Balochistan and the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC). It aims to secure two more copper-gold licenses in Chagai, backed by a $100 million exploration fund.

The company has signed an MoU with the Oil and Gas Development Company Limited to jointly explore new leases. NRL also plans to attract national and international investors to support future exploration and development.

A Vision for Pakistan-Led Exploration

NRL thanked the Government of Balochistan and SIFC for their support. The company remains committed to expanding Pakistan-led mineral development.

“With continued cooperation, more domestic companies will enter mining,” said Tabba. “This will drive sustainable growth for Balochistan and Pakistan.”

AI Challenges Long-Held Belief That Fingerprints Are Unique

In a groundbreaking discovery, researchers using artificial intelligence in forensics have revealed that fingerprints may not be as unique as once believed. Contrary to over a century of forensic dogma, a new AI model has shown that fingerprints from different fingers of the same individual can often appear strikingly similar.

AI Reveals Overlapping Patterns

Led by Columbia Engineering’s Hod Lipson and University at Buffalo’s Wenyao Xu, the study analyzed around 60,000 fingerprint samples from a U.S. government database. Gabe Guo, an undergraduate at Columbia, played a central role in the project. He used a deep contrastive network to compare fingerprint pairs, some from the same person and others from different individuals.

Surprisingly, the AI system achieved a 77% accuracy rate in identifying when visually different fingerprints actually came from one person. When the system compared multiple samples together, accuracy increased dramatically—indicating massive potential for improving current forensic techniques.

Read: Infinix Note 50s 5G+ to Feature Scent-Tech with Fragrance-Infused Back

Breaking Away from Traditional Methods

Conventional fingerprint analysis relies on minutiae—the tiny branches and ridge endpoints that form a print’s unique identity. However, Guo explained that the AI didn’t focus on minutiae. Instead, it analyzed broader characteristics like the angles, swirls, and curvatures found in the central areas of the fingerprints.

This approach uncovered patterns that traditional experts had missed for decades. According to Lipson, the discovery proves that AI is capable of making original contributions in fields long governed by human judgment.

Facing Resistance from the Forensic Community

Despite its promise, the study initially faced stiff resistance. Reviewers from major forensic journals rejected the findings outright, some citing the widely held belief that “every fingerprint is unique.”

Rather than giving up, the team refined its model and aimed for a wider audience. Eventually, their persistence paid off. The research was accepted by Science Advances, a respected peer-reviewed journal, marking a major milestone in the ongoing debate over fingerprint uniqueness.

A Game-Changer for Crime Investigations

The implications of this research are significant. AI’s ability to detect hidden similarities between fingerprints could help connect suspects to multiple crime scenes or revive cold cases with partial evidence.

Lipson emphasized that the AI won’t replace human experts or serve as legal proof. However, it can narrow down suspect lists or identify connections previously missed by human eyes.

Graduate contributors Aniv Ray and Judah Goldfeder believe the AI model’s accuracy will increase as it’s trained on larger and more diverse fingerprint datasets. The current findings held consistent across demographics, but the team acknowledged the need for further validation to rule out any biases.

Rethinking a Century of Forensic Assumptions

This study signals a major shift in forensic science, where AI isn’t just a support tool—it’s reshaping foundational beliefs. Perhaps most inspiring, the breakthrough came from a student without any formal background in forensic analysis.

As Lipson noted, “This shows that even a simple AI model trained on overlooked public data can make discoveries that have escaped experts for decades.”

With further research and validation, AI may soon become an essential tool in uncovering truth where traditional methods fall short.

FIA Launches Operation for Afghan Refugee Repatriation Across Punjab

In a decisive step toward executing Pakistan’s deportation plan, the Afghan refugee repatriation process has accelerated in Punjab as the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) forms eight dedicated teams to handle the operation. This move follows the federal government’s directive to expel undocumented and illegal Afghan nationals from the country.

FIA Forms Regional Teams for Repatriation

According to an FIA spokesperson, five teams have been assigned to Lahore, while three will operate in Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, and Kasur. Senior FIA officials will lead these teams, including Assistant Director Sajid Amin in Lahore, Imran Bhatti in Sheikhupura, Babar Shaharyar in Nankana Sahib, and Rana Bilal in Kasur.

Before deportation, refugees in Lahore will be temporarily housed at designated shelters across the city. These include Thokar Niaz Baig, Railway Station, Data Darbar, Sabzi Mandi, and Lari Adda.

Government Pushes Forward with Deportation Plan

The federal government had earlier announced March 31 as the deadline for all illegal Afghan nationals, including holders of Afghan Citizen Cards (ACC), to return voluntarily. Since then, law enforcement and immigration authorities have ramped up efforts to ensure compliance.

In Punjab alone, 4,111 undocumented migrants have been deported so far. An additional 5,950 individuals have been moved to 46 holding centres established across the province. Currently, 1,839 of them remain in these centres.

Holding Centres Set Up Across Punjab

The province has developed a detailed network of temporary shelters. Lahore alone has five such centres, offering basic facilities before refugees are transported to the Torkham border or other exit points.

Punjab Inspector General of Police Usman Anwar emphasized the importance of completing the process while respecting human rights. He directed law enforcement heads, including city police officers and district police officers, to carry out thorough screening, documentation, and biometric verification of all detainees.

Who Are the Afghan Refugees?

Pakistan has hosted Afghan refugees for decades. Today, roughly three million Afghan nationals live in the country, classified into four categories:

  1. Proof of Registration (PoR) Cardholders: Around 1.3 million refugees received official recognition through PoR cards issued in 2007. These cards remain valid until June 30, 2025.

  2. Afghan Citizen Card (ACC) Holders: About 800,000 individuals were issued ACCs in 2016. Though previously allowed to stay, their presence is now deemed illegal under current deportation orders.

  3. Post-2021 Asylum Seekers: Following the Taliban’s return to power, a new wave of Afghan refugees entered Pakistan. While the government estimated 600,000 arrivals, UNHCR confirmed only 200,000 registered asylum seekers.

  4. Undocumented Migrants: This group includes Afghans without any legal documentation. Many in this category have used forged national IDs or entered through informal channels.

Ongoing Identity Verification Drive

In recent years, Pakistan’s National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) launched the National Verification and Renewal Drive. This initiative aims to cancel fake identity cards and remove fraudulent entries from national records. Individuals flagged through this process are now being treated as illegal residents.

The government’s sweeping repatriation campaign reflects rising security concerns and a shifting immigration policy, with national stability and lawful residency taking precedence as authorities enforce stricter border controls.

US-Pakistan Counterterrorism Talks Begin with Dar-Rubio First Call

In a crucial diplomatic development, counterterrorism cooperation took center stage as Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar held his first official call with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The conversation marks a renewed push to rebuild ties between the two nations amid growing regional and economic challenges.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

According to a statement by Pakistan’s Foreign Office, the call focused on strengthening bilateral relations, with both leaders agreeing to enhance cooperation in security, trade, and investment. Foreign Minister Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to its long-standing partnership with the United States. He underlined the need for increased collaboration, especially in areas of mutual strategic interest.

Secretary Rubio responded positively, emphasizing that economic and trade cooperation would define the next phase of Pakistan-US relations. He particularly highlighted the potential for investment in critical minerals, signaling a shift toward resource-based strategic cooperation.

Focus on Counterterrorism

The discussion placed special emphasis on Pakistan’s anti-terrorism efforts. Dar pointed to Pakistan’s significant gains in counterterrorism between 2013 and 2018. Secretary Rubio praised these efforts and expressed the US government’s willingness to deepen cooperation on security matters. He called for enhanced coordination to combat regional threats and tackle global terrorism more effectively.

This mutual interest in counterterrorism comes at a time when Pakistan faces growing internal security concerns and regional instability, particularly from across the western border.

Addressing Afghanistan and Military Equipment

The evolving situation in Afghanistan also featured in the dialogue. Both sides agreed on the importance of addressing unresolved matters, particularly the abandoned US military equipment following the 2021 troop withdrawal. The presence of these weapons has raised alarm across the region due to the risk of misuse by non-state actors.

Secretary Rubio and Minister Dar agreed on the need to find a resolution and maintain close coordination over developments in Afghanistan, which remains a key point of concern for both countries’ foreign policy agendas.

Trade Amid Tariff Tensions

The call also comes on the heels of newly imposed tariffs by US President Donald Trump, who announced a 10 percent levy on all imported goods, including a staggering 29 percent tariff specifically on Pakistani products. The US, meanwhile, faces a 58 percent duty on its own exports to Pakistan, further complicating trade dynamics.

Despite the strain, both sides appeared open to negotiation. Pakistan’s Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb announced plans to send a delegation to Washington in hopes of reframing the tariff crisis as a diplomatic opportunity. “You should never let a good crisis go to waste,” he stated during a press conference.

Ali Hasnain, associate professor of economics at LUMS, stressed the significance of the US-Pakistan trade relationship. He pointed out that nearly 20 percent of Pakistan’s exports head to the US, making it the country’s largest trade surplus partner.

A Promising Start

The phone call between Dar and Rubio signals a potentially productive phase in Pakistan-US relations. With key topics like counterterrorism, trade, and regional security now on the table, both nations appear ready to move from tension toward cooperation. The commitment to remain in close contact suggests this dialogue could evolve into tangible progress in the months ahead.

Bushra Bibi Petitions IHC for Improved Prison Facilities in Adiala Jail

Former first lady Bushra Bibi has approached the Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking better prison conditions at Adiala Jail, where she is currently serving a seven-year sentence. In her plea, she emphasized her entitlement to specific jail facilities under the Pakistan Prison Rules, 1978, citing her public profile and former status as the spouse of ex-prime minister Imran Khan.

Request for Facilities Under Prison Rules

Bushra Bibi, through her legal counsel, requested the court to direct jail authorities to ensure the provision of facilities as mandated by law.  She urged the court to hold the jail administration accountable for failing to act on the application.

Reference to Precedent in Imran Khan’s Case

The petition draws a parallel with Imran Khan, who is also incarcerated at Adiala Jail in connection with the same case. Bushra argued that since the court had already granted her husband improved jail conditions, she should receive equal treatment. Her lawyers asserted that her prior position as first lady and her lifestyle at the Prime Minister House justified her eligibility for such accommodations.

Respondents Named in Petition

Bushra Bibi named the federal government, the superintendent of Adiala Jail, and Islamabad’s chief commissioner as respondents. The petition urges the court to direct these parties to uphold their responsibilities as outlined in the prison rules.

Background: The £190 Million Case

In December 2019, Khan’s cabinet approved the confidential agreement without disclosing the terms of the settlement. It was agreed that the amount would be deposited in the Supreme Court account. However, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) alleges that Khan and Bushra Bibi personally benefited from the settlement.

Land Allegedly Received in Return

According to NAB officials, the couple allegedly received a massive land allotment in exchange for approving the deal. The land, reportedly worth billions of rupees, was earmarked for an educational institution. Authorities claim that this transaction violated transparency and accountability protocols.

On December 1, 2023, NAB filed a reference against eight individuals, including Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi.

Legal Battle Continues

As the case proceeds, the IHC’s decision will not only determine Bushra Bibi’s immediate prison conditions but may also set a precedent for the treatment of high-profile prisoners under Pakistan’s penal system.

PSX Crashes Nearly 4,000 Points as Trump Tariffs Trigger Global Selloff

In a turbulent start to the week, the KSE-100 Index at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) plummeted by nearly 3,900 points on Monday. The dramatic drop was fueled by rising fears over global trade tensions, particularly the reintroduction of Trump-era tariffs, along with growing uncertainty surrounding domestic economic policies.

Sharp Losses Shake Investor Confidence

The benchmark KSE-100 Index closed at 114,909.48, down 3,882.18 points or 3.27% from the previous close of 118,791.66. Earlier in the session, the index had fallen to a shocking intraday low of 110,103.97 — a loss of over 8,600 points or 7.31%. Even the day’s intraday high of 117,601.62 remained in negative territory, trailing 1% behind Friday’s close.

The market’s sharp decline triggered a lower lock when the index dropped more than 5%. Trading was temporarily halted, and all pending orders were cancelled before resuming at 1:03 pm. However, selling pressure continued after the break, deepening the losses before a minor recovery near closing.

Global Jitters Meet Local Uncertainty

Market analysts attributed the plunge to a mix of external shocks and internal economic doubts. The reintroduction of Trump tariffs in the U.S. has spurred fears of another wave of global trade disruption, hitting sentiment across Asian markets. Major stock indexes in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and China all recorded significant losses. Japan’s Nikkei dropped 6%, while Taiwan’s index crashed nearly 10% — prompting emergency short-selling restrictions.

“These tariffs are reigniting recession concerns and weighing heavily on Asian markets,” said Mustafa Mustansir, Director of Research at Taurus Securities. “The PSX is reflecting that panic, especially in the absence of stabilizing domestic signals.”

Domestic Challenges Compound Pressure

Adding to investor anxiety is the delay in the government’s Rs1.25 trillion bank borrowing plan intended to resolve Pakistan’s massive Rs2.4 trillion circular debt. Uncertainty over the timeline and implementation of this plan has made investors wary of the energy sector’s future stability.

Moreover, skepticism surrounds Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s recent announcement of a Rs7.41 per unit reduction in electricity tariffs. While initially welcomed, analysts later revealed that most of the relief stems from temporary adjustments — not a permanent drop in base tariffs. The actual pre-tax relief stands closer to Rs5.98 per unit, with the rest attributed to tax-related offsets.

“The market viewed the tariff cut with caution,” said Amreen Soorani, Head of Research at Al Meezan Investment. “Investors are beginning to realise that the relief lacks structural reforms and long-term impact.”

Regional and Global Selloffs Add Fuel

The PSX decline mirrored regional trends. Saudi Arabia’s market dropped 6.78% on Sunday, marking its worst performance since the pandemic. Meanwhile, China’s blue-chip stocks fell 4.4% amid speculation about new stimulus measures. MSCI’s Asia-Pacific index (excluding Japan) slid 3.6%.

These losses, combined with Pakistan’s unresolved economic challenges, created the perfect storm at the PSX. The lack of clear direction, both globally and locally, has left investors risk-averse and markets volatile.

As global volatility lingers and domestic reforms remain uncertain, market stability may remain elusive in the short term.

Gaza Media Camp Strike: Israeli Attack Kills Two Journalists

In the latest escalation of violence in Gaza, an Israeli airstrike has killed two Palestinian journalists, striking a media camp and setting it ablaze. The tragic incident highlights the growing toll on journalist safety in the ongoing conflict, where over 200 media professionals have lost their lives since the start of Israel’s military campaign.

Strike Engulfs Media Camp in Flames

The attack targeted a designated media area in Gaza, where local journalists had gathered to report on the ground situation. Eyewitnesses described a sudden explosion followed by massive flames that engulfed the camp. Despite clearly marked press gear and visible camera equipment, the site was hit with full force.

The strike instantly killed two Palestinian journalists. Several others sustained injuries as they scrambled for cover. Their equipment, press tents, and documentation tools were destroyed in the fire.

Rising Death Toll Among Journalists

The two journalists add to a growing list of media workers who have been killed in the war-torn enclave. Since the start of Israel’s military operations in Gaza, more than 200 journalists—mostly Palestinians—have died, according to press freedom groups. This marks one of the deadliest periods for media professionals in modern conflict history.

Rights organizations and media watchdogs have condemned the repeated targeting of press workers. They stress that journalists, protected under international law, must not be deliberately attacked. Despite these protections, Gaza’s journalists remain among the most at risk globally.

Press Community Mourns Loss

Local media outlets and international news agencies expressed outrage over the strike. However The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate called it a “deliberate attack on truth” and accused Israel of trying to silence coverage of the war.

Footage taken shortly before the strike showed the victims working under difficult conditions, attempting to document the humanitarian crisis unfolding across Gaza. Their death now stands as a grim reminder of the dangers media workers face daily.

Global Reactions and Calls for Accountability

The international community responded with concern. Press freedom organizations like Reporters Without Borders and the Committee to Protect Journalists renewed calls for independent investigations into the targeting of journalists in Gaza. They demand accountability and insist that all parties to the conflict respect the neutral role of the press.

Some human rights bodies have argued that these repeated attacks on journalists may amount to war crimes. They call for urgent action from global institutions to halt impunity.

Gaza’s Journalists Remain on the Frontlines

Despite the losses, journalists in Gaza continue their work—risking their lives to report the truth. With electricity and communication systems failing, and humanitarian aid limited, reporters are often among the only remaining voices documenting events in real time.

As the conflict continues with no clear end in sight, the threat to journalist safety only increases. Each airstrike not only claims lives but silences stories that need to be told. In the midst of chaos, Gaza’s journalists remain steadfast—armed with cameras and conviction, not weapons.

Bushra Bibi Seeks Better Jail Facilities at Adiala

ISLAMABAD: Bushra Bibi, wife of PTI founder Imran Khan and former first lady of Pakistan, has approached the Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking improved facilities in Adiala Jail. She is currently serving a seven-year sentence in the high-profile £190 million corruption case.

Bushra Bibi filed the petition through her legal team, asking the court to direct jail authorities to provide facilities in line with the Pakistan Prison Rules, 1978. In her plea, she stated that her status as a former first lady entitled her to certain comforts under the law.

She emphasized that during her husband’s tenure as Prime Minister, she resided in the PM House and lived a life of public protocol. Therefore, the court should ensure she receives facilities similar to what her husband, Imran Khan, was granted while detained in the same jail.

Jail Authorities Accused of Inaction

The petition highlighted that Bushra Bibi had already submitted a formal application to the Adiala Jail superintendent. However, no action was taken to address her requests. Her legal team argued that this neglect violates her rights and the established prison rules.

She further urged the court to hold the federal government, the Adiala Jail superintendent, and the chief commissioner of Islamabad accountable for fulfilling their legal responsibilities.

What is the £190 Million Case?

The case revolves around the alleged misappropriation of Rs50 billion, equivalent to £190 million at the time. The UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) had returned this amount to Pakistan, expecting the money to be deposited with the Supreme Court as part of a legal settlement.

However, former Prime Minister Imran Khan allegedly obtained cabinet approval for the arrangement on December 3, 2019, without revealing the details of the deal. According to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), the settlement led to Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi receiving land worth billions of rupees—allegedly as a bribe.

NAB filed a reference in the case on December 1, 2023, naming eight accused, including Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi.

Legal Pressure Mounts

As Bushra Bibi continues to serve her sentence, her plea for improved conditions highlights the political and legal dimensions of the case. With both husband and wife imprisoned, their legal teams are actively challenging multiple aspects of their detentions.

Observers see the move as part of PTI’s broader legal strategy to highlight alleged injustices faced by its leadership in custody.

PTI Distances Itself from US Sanctions Bill, Eyes Grand Opposition Alliance

In response to the recent Pakistan Democracy Act introduced in the US House of Representatives, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has firmly distanced itself from the proposed legislation. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan clarified on Monday that the party has no link to the bill or the visiting US congressional delegation.

PTI Rejects Link to US Legislation

Speaking at Parliament House, Gohar dismissed the bipartisan bill—which seeks sanctions against Pakistani officials for alleged human rights abuses, including the treatment of former Prime Minister Imran Khan—as irrelevant to PTI. He said the party neither influenced the bill nor maintains any contact with the US delegation currently visiting Pakistan.

“Many bills and resolutions are passed in the US Congress. We have nothing to do with this one,” Gohar stated, distancing PTI from any external lobbying efforts.

Foreign Office Rejects Sanctions Bill

Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also rejected the bill, describing it as a move by a single legislator that does not reflect the current positive trajectory of Pakistan-US relations. Foreign Office spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan said the bill’s timing and context do not align with the principles of mutual respect and non-interference.

He added that Pakistan remains committed to democracy, rule of law, human rights, and freedom of expression.

Alliance-Building Underway

Turning to domestic politics, Gohar revealed that PTI is working to finalize a grand opposition alliance. The strategy will be outlined after consultations with key political players. He confirmed that JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman is expected to announce his decision on joining the alliance on April 15, following his party’s internal deliberations.

Gohar expressed optimism about uniting various opposition groups to form a strong front against the government. The alliance aims to start an anti-government movement soon after Eid ul Fitr.

PTI’s Wider Political Strategy

Gohar reiterated that PTI’s current focus is on unifying opposition forces rather than engaging in talks with the establishment. When questioned about backdoor communications with state institutions, he said he had no information beyond what the media reports.

In April 2024, PTI established the Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz-e-Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP), which includes the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP), Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M), Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), and Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM). More recently, PTI reached out to former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi to strengthen the joint movement.

Internal Unity Despite Differences

Addressing internal party matters, Gohar emphasized that PTI remains a democratic platform where leaders are free to express their views. However, he advised that such discussions should be kept within party forums.

He downplayed any suggestions of serious infighting and said that open dialogue is part of PTI’s democratic structure.

As PTI distances itself from international controversies, its attention turns firmly toward domestic politics. With a multi-party alliance taking shape and growing dissent against the government, the coming weeks could see a significant shift in the country’s political landscape.

Heatwave in Sindh: Temperatures to Soar 7°C Above Normal, Warns PMD

A severe Sindh heatwave has gripped large parts of the province, with the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) warning that temperatures could rise 5 to 7 degrees Celsius above average today. The extreme heat is expected to affect several districts, placing millions at risk as the region braces for sweltering days ahead.

Scorching Conditions Across Upper Sindh

According to PMD, areas in upper Sindh — including Larkana, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Kashmore, Qambar Shahdadkot, Ghotki, and Sukkur — are likely to experience exceptionally high temperatures. The heatwave has tightened its hold, with little to no relief expected in these regions over the next few days.

Karachi Braces for Hot, Humid Days

In Karachi, residents can expect hot and humid weather on Tuesday and Wednesday. The PMD forecasts maximum temperatures between 36°C and 38°C. Although the sea breeze may resume intermittently, its cooling effect will likely be brief and limited.

On Sunday, temperatures in Karachi soared to nearly 40°C, setting the stage for an unrelenting week. Despite being a coastal city, Karachi’s vulnerability to the urban heat island effect — where densely built areas trap heat — amplifies discomfort during such weather patterns.

Wind Gusts for Coastal Areas

Coastal districts including Thatta, Sujawal, Badin, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, and Tharparkar are expected to experience strong, gusty winds. However, these winds may do little to cool the region and could instead increase the risk of dust storms and reduced air quality in some places.

Experts Link Heat Surge to Climate Change

Chief Meteorologist Muhammad Afzal has pointed to climate change as a key driver behind this temperature surge. He noted that Pakistan is witnessing a steady rise in average temperatures nationwide, with urban centers like Karachi bearing the brunt.

“Much of the country may see temperatures 2°C to 3°C above normal, with Karachi experiencing spikes of up to 4°C beyond its seasonal average,” Afzal said.

He emphasized that rapid urbanization, lack of green spaces, and poor infrastructure contribute to higher retained heat, especially in major cities.

Public Advised to Take Precautions

The PMD has urged the public to adopt preventive measures during this heatwave. Key recommendations include:

  • Staying indoors during peak sunlight hours (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

  • Drinking plenty of water to avoid dehydration

  • Wearing light, breathable clothing

  • Conserving water usage to reduce strain on municipal systems

Authorities are also advising schools, workplaces, and community centers to create shaded, ventilated areas for public safety.

With climate patterns shifting, Pakistan is expected to face more frequent and intense heatwaves in the years ahead. This event may serve as a harsh reminder of the urgent need for better urban planning, environmental protection, and public awareness in the face of rising global temperatures.

Viral Video Highlights Devastating Impact of Israeli Airstrike in Gaza

The video, shared by local journalists, depicts bodies hurled high above destroyed buildings amidst plumes of smoke and dust from multiple Israeli strikes. One Gaza-based journalist remarked, “US rockets used by Israeli occupation to send both SOULS and BODIES of children to heaven!”

Details of the Incident

The video, shared by local journalists, depicts bodies hurled high above destroyed buildings amidst plumes of smoke and dust from multiple Israeli strikes. One Gaza-based journalist remarked, “US rockets used by Israeli occupation to send both SOULS and BODIES of children to heaven!”

Humanitarian Concerns

This incident contributes to the growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Since the resumption of Israeli airstrikes on March 18, at least 100 Palestinian children have been killed or injured each day. Philippe Lazzarini, head of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), described the situation as “harrowing” and emphasized that “nothing justifies the killing of children.”

Lazzarini further stated that the war has turned Gaza into a “no land” for children, highlighting the profound impact on the younger population.

International Response

The international community has expressed deep concern over the escalating violence and its impact on civilians. Calls for an immediate ceasefire and unimpeded access for humanitarian aid are intensifying. The United Nations and various human rights organizations are urging thorough investigations into such incidents to ensure accountability and the protection of non-combatants during military operations.

Gaza Bombardment Intensifies: 32 Died Amid Netanyahu’s U.S. Visit

The Gaza conflict has escalated, worsening an already devastating humanitarian crisis. Israeli airstrikes intensified across the Gaza Strip, killing at least 32 Palestinians on April 6. The dead include over a dozen women and children. These strikes coincided with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the U.S. to meet President Donald Trump.

In response, Hamas launched rockets at Israeli cities. Israel ordered evacuations from central Gaza, displacing thousands more. The violence resumed after a ceasefire broke down on March 18. Since October 2023, over 50,000 Palestinians have died in the conflict.

Humanitarian Crisis Worsens

Conditions in Gaza remain catastrophic. Over 90% of Gaza’s 2.1 million people are displaced. Most lack access to shelter, food, clean water, and medical care. Aid organizations report that more than one million children have not received life-saving assistance for over a month. Israeli blockades have prevented critical supplies from entering the region.

International Response Builds

French President Emmanuel Macron announced a peace summit in Cairo. He will meet with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Jordan’s King Abdullah II. The goal is to find a path to a ceasefire. Macron also plans to meet with humanitarian aid workers in the region.

Meanwhile, the United Nations and the Palestinian Red Crescent have demanded independent investigations. These focus on recent incidents where aid workers were killed in Israeli strikes. The Israeli military has updated its initial reports and admitted discrepancies in their accounts of the attacks.

Global Calls for Ceasefire

The international community continues to pressure both sides. Governments and aid agencies are urging for an immediate ceasefire. They also call for unrestricted humanitarian access into Gaza.

As of now, the situation on the ground remains highly unstable. Airstrikes continue. Rockets keep flying. Aid remains blocked. The people of Gaza face growing despair.

This ongoing conflict has not only strained regional stability but also created one of the worst humanitarian disasters in recent memory. The coming days will be critical, as world leaders push for peace and aid workers struggle to reach those in desperate need.

KSA Temporarily Bans Visas for 14 Countries Ahead of Hajj Season

RIYADH: Saudi authorities have announced a temporary visa suspension for 14 countries ahead of the upcoming Hajj season. The move affects Umrah, business, and family visit visas. The restriction will likely remain in place until mid-June, diplomatic sources said.

Officials clarified that Umrah visa holders can still enter the Kingdom until April 13. The affected countries include Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iraq, Nigeria, Jordan, Algeria, Sudan, Ethiopia, Tunisia, and Yemen.

Key Reasons Behind the Visa Suspension

Saudi authorities cited multiple concerns behind the decision. The most pressing issue is unauthorized Hajj participation. In recent years, many travelers entered Saudi Arabia using multi-entry visas but remained in the country to perform Hajj without authorization. This caused severe crowding and safety concerns.

Another reason is illegal employment. Officials revealed that several visitors with business or family visas took up unauthorized jobs. This violated immigration rules and disrupted the local labor market.

Focus on Safety and Regulation

The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that the temporary ban will help tighten travel regulations. It also aims to improve the safety and security of pilgrims. Authorities warned travelers to follow the new rules strictly to avoid fines or bans.

Diplomatic sources added that those who overstay or violate the visa policy may face a five-year entry ban. Officials said the goal is to better manage pilgrim inflow and enforce immigration laws effectively.

Saudi Arabia wants to ensure a smooth and safe Hajj experience. Officials noted that normal visa operations are expected to resume by mid-June after the peak pilgrimage period ends.

Digital Guide Launched in 16 Languages

In a separate effort to assist pilgrims, Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Hajj and Umrah launched a digital Hajj and Umrah guide. The guide is available in 16 languages, including Urdu, English, Arabic, and Turkish. It aims to help international pilgrims better understand the pilgrimage process.

The guide comes in PDF and audio formats. Pilgrims can access it through the ministry’s official website. It covers key instructions and religious practices.

Languages include French, Persian, Uzbek, and Indonesian. The guide ensures that pilgrims from different regions receive clear, accurate information about rituals, schedules, and travel protocols.

Saudi Arabia’s latest visa policy reflects its strict approach to immigration control during the Hajj season. By limiting visa misuse and regulating travel more efficiently, the Kingdom hopes to prevent overcrowding and maintain public safety.

The digital guide and visa suspension show the government’s commitment to managing Hajj logistics with discipline and clarity. Travelers from the 14 affected countries are advised to plan accordingly and avoid any violations.

Studio Ghibli AI Art Trend Raises Alarming Data Privacy Concerns

The viral Studio Ghibli AI art trend may look charming on the surface, but experts warn it masks serious privacy risks. While users delight in turning selfies into whimsical animations, cybersecurity professionals say the trade-off could be hidden data collection, identity theft, and long-term digital vulnerability.

Hidden Dangers Behind the Filter

The trend exploded after OpenAI’s GPT-4o model introduced tools that recreate personal photos in the distinct Studio Ghibli animation style. Soon after, several platforms began offering similar AI-based transformations. But while the results are visually stunning, the underlying processes and policies are often vague.

Experts say most users overlook the risks in exchange for a moment of creative fun. But the personal data embedded in uploaded photos — including facial features, location metadata, timestamps, and device info — can be far more revealing than expected.

Vague Policies, Real Threats

Cybersecurity leaders like Vishal Salvi, CEO of Quick Heal Technologies, point out that the terms of service for many of these tools are unclear. “Even if companies claim your photos are deleted after one-time use, that deletion is often not immediate or complete,” Salvi explained.

AI platforms typically use neural style transfer (NST) algorithms. These separate photo content from style and blend them with reference artwork. But Salvi warns that techniques like model inversion attacks can potentially reconstruct original photos, making data retrieval a real concern.

Furthermore, Salvi notes that even unused photo fragments may be repurposed — whether for AI training, surveillance, or targeted advertising — without user knowledge.

The Illusion of Harmless Fun

According to Pratim Mukherjee, Senior Director of Engineering at McAfee, the danger lies in the illusion of safety. “When apps encourage fast interactions with flashy filters, users often don’t stop to consider what they’re agreeing to,” he said.

He added that many apps quietly gain access to camera rolls, encouraging data sharing without informed consent. “What looks like creativity is often just a clever way to collect user data. Once that data fuels monetisation, it blurs the line between fun and exploitation.”

Mukherjee stresses that once an image is online, it’s impossible to retrieve. “You can reset a password, but not your face,” he cautioned.

A Growing Deepfake and Fraud Risk

Kaspersky’s Vladislav Tushkanov adds that even trusted companies can’t always guarantee protection. “Data breaches, malicious activity, or technical glitches can leak personal data, which may later appear on dark web forums,” he said.

He highlighted how stolen images could be used for deepfakes or identity fraud. Many platforms also bury their data usage terms deep within lengthy documents, making it difficult for users to give true informed consent.

How Users Can Stay Safe

Experts recommend practical steps to protect privacy. Tushkanov suggests enabling two-factor authentication, using strong passwords, and avoiding suspicious platforms. Salvi advises stripping metadata from photos before uploading.

From a policy standpoint, experts urge governments to require platforms to provide clear, concise disclosures about data usage. They also recommend standardized audits and stronger privacy certifications to close regulatory gaps.

Mukherjee adds, “Until there’s more transparency, users should think twice before uploading personal photos for the sake of a trending image. Not every filter is worth the cost of your digital footprint.”
