Imran Khan Pressures Gandapur Amid Rising KP Violence

Imran Khan has called out Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur over the worsening security in the province. Amid a sharp rise in terrorism, Khan warned that if Gandapur cannot restore peace, he should resign. This direct statement highlights the deepening KP law and order crisis and intensifies political pressure on the PTI-led provincial government.

Imran’s Strong Message from Jail

Speaking from Adiala Jail, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder issued the warning during a conversation with party leaders. Sources confirmed that Khan said, “If Ali Amin Gandapur cannot restore peace, he should step down.” He added that if Gandapur fails to fix governance issues, then someone else should take charge.

This marks a rare instance of public criticism from Khan toward a key PTI figure, reflecting serious concern over growing insecurity in KP. The province has seen a surge in terrorist attacks in 2025, raising alarm among the public and officials alike.

Spike in Terror Incidents Across KP

Since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021, terrorism has resurged in Pakistan, particularly in KP and Balochistan. According to a police report cited by Geo News, KP recorded at least 476 terror incidents in just the first seven months of 2025.

The violence has been deadly. So far, 121 civilians have lost their lives, while 301 others have been injured. The toll on law enforcement is also heavy: 66 police officers were martyred, and 90 were injured. The Frontier Corps lost 48 personnel, while 109 were wounded. Levies forces also suffered, with 10 martyred and 8 injured. An additional 55 members of other security forces died in the violence.

This mounting toll has raised serious questions about the effectiveness of the provincial government’s response.

Jail Privileges Restored for PTI Founder

Meanwhile, Khan’s jail privileges have been reinstated. He now has access to books and newspapers and recently had a one-hour phone call with his children. During the call, Khan reportedly encouraged his sons to visit him but was told their National Identity Cards for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOPs) had expired.

He clarified to prison officials that he had never asked his children to visit for political reasons, emphasizing that their involvement should be voluntary.

Confusion Over Children’s Visit

Earlier, Khan’s sister, Aleema Khan, announced that his sons — Suleiman and Kasim — would join protests planned for August to demand his release. However, conflicting reports later suggested that Khan had barred them from traveling to Pakistan or engaging in political activities.

The party quickly denied those reports, stating that both sons remained committed to supporting their father and would travel when permitted.

Aleema further revealed that the sons had applied for NICOP and visas. She explained that the documents had been lost but were now under reapplication. She added that Pakistani embassy officials claimed no application was received, even though a tracking number existed.

According to her, a friend had spoken to the ambassador, who reportedly said permission was needed from the Ministry of Interior. Aleema responded by insisting that any such permission must come from Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. She also criticized conflicting statements from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs about who would issue the visa.

Disagreement Over Senator Nomination

Imran Khan also expressed disapproval of Aleema Khan’s recent public comments about Mishal Yousafzai’s nomination to the Senate. He reportedly called her remarks unnecessary and advised her to avoid public political commentary.

This reaction reflects Khan’s efforts to maintain party discipline and avoid unnecessary internal rifts during a sensitive time for PTI. The party faces mounting challenges, from leadership pressures to security failures and legal troubles.

A Party Under Pressure

The criticism of Gandapur signals that Imran Khan expects performance and accountability, even from his closest allies. With KP facing serious instability and Khan still behind bars since August 2023, PTI’s ability to respond to the security and political challenges remains uncertain.

As Pakistan’s security crisis deepens, so does the pressure on both the central and provincial leaderships to act swiftly and decisively.
