Jimmy Kimmel Suspension Sparks Celebrity Split in Hollywood

Network Decision Over Controversial Remarks

ABC’s decision to pull “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” off the air indefinitely after the host’s remarks about conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s alleged assassin has ignited a fierce debate across Hollywood. Some stars are calling the move censorship, while others defend the network’s action as warranted.

On Monday and Tuesday nights, Kimmel suggested on his show that Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old Utah man charged with Kirk’s killing, was part of the “MAGA gang” — despite reports and an indictment noting Robinson had a left-wing ideology. “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them,” Kimmel said.

ABC suspended the program after several affiliated stations refused to air it. Nexstar Media Group broadcasting chief Andrew Alford said in a press release that Kimmel’s comments were “offensive and insensitive” and did not reflect the “spectrum of opinions” in local communities.

Celebrities Take Sides

The suspension set off an immediate reaction among actors, comedians and musicians. Actor and comedian Rob Schneider posted on X that he did not want to hear about someone upset over losing a show “when they weren’t upset about a young father getting murdered for having conversations.” On “The Will Cain Show” Thursday, Schneider said the outrage over Kimmel losing a platform “should be dwarfed” by outrage over Kirk’s killing. “There was no attempt in humor at all in what he said, and, as a matter of fact, it was a lie,” Schneider added.

Kevin Sorbo, star of “Hercules,” avoided naming Kimmel directly but lamented the state of late-night TV, writing on X, “I sure miss Johnny Carson. He was the best! Jay Leno takes a close 2nd place!” Country star John Rich proposed on X that ABC replace Kimmel with Roseanne Barr: “It would be YUGE!!” Barr herself replied, “I’m available to fill in @ABCNetwork” and accused the administration of pressuring networks to fire comedians they dislike.

Supporters Defend Kimmel

Other celebrities rallied behind Kimmel. Christie Brinkley posted a group photo of late-night hosts, including Kimmel, to her Instagram story with the caption, “The laughter they provide us is as important as the air we breathe! We must protect their and our 1st Amendment rights!”

Actor Jason Bateman, a close friend of Kimmel, called the decision “troubling” on NBC’s “Today” show. “We all have to really take a moment and figure how we feel about this type of thing,” Bateman said. “I imagine there’s plenty of conversations going on to do something, because you just can’t stand by and let stuff like that go on.”

Political Reaction

Former President Donald Trump praised Disney’s decision to preempt Kimmel’s show as “great news for America” on Wednesday. The comment added a political charge to the debate, which already reflected the country’s deep cultural divides.

A Flashpoint for Free Speech

The controversy comes amid broader turbulence in late-night television. CBS announced in July it would cancel “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” next May, citing financial reasons, just days after Colbert criticized a settlement involving Trump and Paramount Global. David Letterman warned at The Atlantic Festival that such moves signal “managed media” and said performers should not be punished for refusing to “suck up” to power.

Kimmel himself has not commented publicly on his suspension. But the reaction from his peers shows how the decision has become a flashpoint over free speech, accountability and the limits of political humor on network TV.

Jon Stewart Hosts The Daily Show Episode After Jimmy Kimmel Suspension

Jon Stewart stepped behind “The Daily Show” desk Thursday night for a rare mid-week appearance, using satire to respond to ABC’s suspension of Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night program. Stewart, who normally hosts only on Mondays, devoted the episode to lampooning what he described as government-approved entertainment in the wake of Kimmel’s removal.
