UN Delegations Walk Out During Netanyahu’s Speech Over Gaza

The United Nations General Assembly witnessed a significant moment when many member state delegations walked out during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address. The walkout reflected the growing international divide over Israel’s military operations in Gaza and the rising civilian toll.

Member States Exit in Protest

According to diplomats present in the chamber, numerous delegations left their seats as Netanyahu began his remarks. Some delegates held Palestinian flags, while others quietly exited the hall. While walkouts have occurred at the UN before, the scale of Thursday’s exit signaled a clear protest against Israel’s policies in Gaza and the occupied territories.

Speech Amid Global Criticism

Netanyahu defended his government’s actions as essential for Israel’s security and said operations would continue until “Hamas’ military capabilities are eliminated.” His remarks came as UN agencies and humanitarian groups reported thousands of civilian casualties in Gaza and warned of worsening conditions for the population.

Several delegations that remained seated voiced their criticism in follow-up statements. Representatives from South Africa, Brazil and Malaysia accused Israel of violating international law, while several European nations raised concerns about “disproportionate use of force.”

Calls for Accountability Grow

The walkout coincided with growing calls for international accountability. The International Court of Justice is already hearing a case brought by South Africa alleging that Israel is committing acts amounting to genocide under the UN Genocide Convention. Israel denies those accusations.

Human rights groups and some UN agencies describe conditions in Gaza as “catastrophic” and continue to call for an immediate ceasefire to enable humanitarian aid to flow. The United States remains Israel’s strongest backer at the UN, though Washington has urged Jerusalem to take further steps to protect civilians.

Diplomatic Implications

Observers say the walkout will likely deepen Israel’s isolation within the UN and intensify diplomatic pressure over its actions in Gaza. “We are seeing a visible shift in global opinion,” said one Middle East analyst. “The Gaza war is shaping Israel’s standing internationally.”

Despite the exits, Netanyahu completed his speech uninterrupted and later met privately with allied delegations on the sidelines of the General Assembly.

The incident underlines how the Gaza conflict has become a focal point for international debate at the UN and beyond.
