Musk’s Satellites Are Blocking Radio Telescopes, Hindering Space Research

Elon Musk’s growing Starlink satellite network is interfering with scientists’ ability to observe the universe. Researchers in the Netherlands say radio waves from the satellites are disrupting radio telescopes. According to BBC News, the satellites are blinding telescopes and making it harder for astronomers to study space.

Starlink satellites provide fast internet across the world, even in remote locations like Ukraine and Yemen. However, their signals are much stronger than earlier versions, causing more interference with radio telescopes. The Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy (Astron) says this interference is a major issue.

The new generation of Starlink satellites, called V2, emits 32 times more radiation than the previous generation. Astronomers are struggling to observe distant galaxies and black holes due to the interference. Professor Jessica Dempsey, director of Astron, explained that the satellites are blocking scientists from viewing important astronomical phenomena.

“We’re trying to look at jets from black holes and some of the earliest galaxies, millions of light years away,” Dempsey told BBC News. “But with every new satellite, we see less of the sky.”

SpaceX, the company behind Starlink, has not responded to requests for comment. Despite the advantages of global internet, astronomers are concerned about the impact on their work. Radio telescopes rely on detecting electromagnetic waves from distant objects in space, but Starlink’s interference disrupts these signals.

A study by Astron showed unintended electromagnetic radiation from nearly all second-generation Starlink satellites. The radiation was 10 million times brighter than the weakest light sources in space. Cees Bassa, lead author of the study, compared the difference to “the faintest stars visible to the naked eye and the brightness of the full Moon.”

Currently, about 6,402 Starlink satellites are orbiting Earth at around 550 km above the surface. These satellites are large, with 3-meter-wide panels and 8-meter solar arrays. They outnumber competitors, with SpaceX being the largest provider of satellite internet. OneWeb, a competitor, has fewer than 1,000 satellites in orbit, while Amazon plans to launch 3,000 more in the coming years.

By 2030, the number of satellites in orbit could exceed 100,000. Astronomers fear that with more satellites, the problem will only worsen. SpaceX is launching about 40 new Starlink satellites each week.

Robert Massey, Deputy Executive Director of the Royal Astronomical Society in the UK, expressed concern over the growing interference. “If something this bright is compromising a major radio observatory, we need to act quickly,” Massey warned.

The study used data from the LOFAR radio telescope in the Netherlands. The researchers observed the Starlink interference during a single day in July. They found that many distant objects, such as galaxies and planets, emit light as electromagnetic waves. These waves are crucial for radio telescopes to study space. But Starlink satellites are disrupting those signals, blocking scientists from gathering important data.

Astronomers are calling for urgent action to address the issue before it worsens.

Israel Kills Top Hezbollah Commander in Beirut Airstrike

Israel has escalated its conflict with Hezbollah, killing a top commander in an airstrike on Beirut’s southern suburbs. Two security sources in Lebanon confirmed the death of Ibrahim Aqil, Hezbollah’s operations commander.

Aqil, a key member of Hezbollah’s military leadership, was killed alongside members of the elite Radwan Unit during a meeting. The attack resulted in eight deaths and 59 wounded, according to Lebanon’s health ministry. The strike marked a major blow to Hezbollah, which has faced increased attacks from Israel in recent weeks.

Hezbollah Suffers Heavy Losses

This attack follows a devastating incident earlier in the week where pagers and walkie-talkies used by Hezbollah members exploded, killing 37 people and injuring thousands. While Israel has not confirmed responsibility, the incident is widely believed to be part of its operations against the Iran-backed group.

Buildings Destroyed in Airstrike

Lebanon’s civil defense teams are searching for survivors under the rubble of two buildings hit by the strike. Footage from the scene shows widespread damage, with debris scattered and burnt-out cars lining the streets. Reuters witnesses reported hearing jets over Beirut and seeing smoke rising from the targeted area.

Israel Confirms Strike

The Israeli military confirmed conducting a “targeted strike” in Beirut but provided no further details. This is the second time in two months that Israel has targeted Hezbollah’s leadership. In July, Israel killed Fuad Shukr, another senior Hezbollah military commander, in a similar strike.

Hezbollah Retaliates with Rocket Fire

In response, Hezbollah fired Katyusha rockets at what it claimed to be Israel’s main intelligence headquarters in northern Israel. Israeli media reported heavy rocket fire in the region, and warning sirens were heard in northern Israel.

U.S. and Global Reactions

Hezbollah’s commander, Ibrahim Aqil, had a $7 million bounty on his head from the United States due to his involvement in the 1983 bombing of U.S. Marines in Lebanon. Despite this, U.S. national security spokesman John Kirby stated that Israel had not notified the U.S. prior to the strike. He also urged American citizens to avoid traveling to Lebanon due to the escalating conflict.

War Could Be Avoided

Kirby expressed hope that the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah could still be prevented from escalating into full-scale war. “War is not inevitable,” he said, referring to the Blue Line, the frontier between Israel and Lebanon.

Tensions Rising on Both Sides

The conflict, ignited by the ongoing Gaza war, has intensified in the past week. Israel’s airstrikes on southern Lebanon on Thursday were the most intense since the current conflict began a year ago. Tens of thousands of people have been displaced on both sides of the border since the fighting resumed, reminiscent of the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war.

Israeli Leadership Responds

Following the latest developments, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu postponed his trip to the United Nations General Assembly in New York by a day. He is now scheduled to arrive on Wednesday due to the situation in Lebanon. Meanwhile, Israel’s military leadership is closely monitoring the situation, with army chief General Herzi Halevi meeting top commanders to assess the ongoing conflict.

Britain Monitors Situation Closely

In response to the escalating conflict, Britain’s Foreign Secretary David Lammy chaired a meeting of the government’s emergency committee (COBR) to discuss the situation in Lebanon. “The risk of escalation remains high,” said a Foreign Office statement following the meeting.

As the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah deepens, concerns are growing that it could widen further, leading to more casualties and destruction on both sides. Both international and regional powers are closely monitoring the situation as tensions continue to rise in the Middle East.

PTI Granted Permission for Public Gathering in Lahore With Conditions

LAHORE: The district administration of Lahore has agreed to permit Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to hold a public rally in Lahore. However, strict conditions will be in place, according to news.

The district administration emphasized that PTI must follow all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure safety and order during the rally. A spokesperson confirmed that discussions are currently ongoing to finalize the venue for the event.

Venue Still Under Discussion

Sources revealed that the Kahna Maweshi Mandi (Cattle Market) is being considered as a possible location. Initially, PTI had requested the Minar-e-Pakistan ground. However, after reviewing a report from the District Intelligence Committee, authorities have proposed other locations, including Shahpur Kanjran and Saggian Bridge, as alternatives.

Dispute Over Rally’s End Time

A deadlock has arisen between PTI and the district administration over the proposed timing for the rally. The administration suggested that the rally should conclude by 7 PM, but PTI requested an extension until 11 PM. The opposition leader of the Punjab Assembly is consulting his legal team outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office to resolve the matter.

Preparations for the Rally

In anticipation of the event, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Education Minister Meena Khan Afridi has been seen boosting morale among PTI workers. A viral video circulating on social media shows Afridi performing push-ups with party workers at the Chief Minister’s House in Peshawar. The video was filmed after Afridi’s meeting with the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, symbolizing the party’s enthusiasm ahead of the rally.

Explosive Attacks Rock Lebanon as Pagers and Walkie-Talkies Detonate

At 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, a series of beeps alerted Hezbollah operatives in Lebanon to what they thought was a message from their leadership. However, the message wasn’t from their leaders. Within seconds, explosions erupted across the country, causing chaos in streets, shops, and homes. The blasts were caused by small explosive compounds hidden in pagers.

Witnesses reported seeing men thrown off motorcycles and people on the ground in agony as smoke rose from their pockets. Mohammed Awada, who was driving by, described the horrifying scene. “My son started screaming when he saw a man’s hand fly away,” he said.

By the end of the day, at least a dozen people were dead, and over 2,700 were injured. The next day, the explosions continued, this time with walkie-talkies, killing 20 more people, including four children. Many of the victims were Hezbollah members, but civilians were also affected.

While Israel has not confirmed or denied involvement, 12 current and former defense officials told The New York Times that Israel was behind the attack. They described the operation as carefully planned and in development for a long time.

The booby-trapped pagers and walkie-talkies are part of the long-standing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. The tension has only escalated since the war in Gaza. Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, had been promoting the use of pagers instead of cellphones, fearing that Israeli intelligence could track them using cellphone networks.

Nasrallah, in a televised address earlier this year, told his followers, “The phone in your hands is the agent.” He urged them to abandon cellphones and use pagers, which are harder to trace. As a result, Hezbollah began distributing thousands of pagers to its operatives.

Israel saw this as an opportunity. Israeli intelligence set up a shell company to manufacture the pagers, which were laced with explosives. The pagers were shipped to Lebanon starting in 2022, and Hezbollah members unknowingly began using them. Israeli officials referred to these pagers as “buttons” that could be triggered at any moment.

On Tuesday, Israel activated the plan. The pagers beeped and displayed a message in Arabic, making it seem like the instructions were coming from Hezbollah’s leadership. Moments later, explosions rocked Lebanon.

In the aftermath, ambulances struggled to navigate the crowded streets, and hospitals were overwhelmed with the injured. Hezbollah confirmed that at least eight of its fighters were killed, but the death toll included many civilians as well.

One of the victims was 9-year-old Fatima Abdullah. She had just returned home from her first day of school when her father’s pager began to beep. She picked it up, and it exploded in her hands, killing her instantly.

On Wednesday, as thousands gathered for funerals in Beirut, another explosion struck. The crowd panicked, fearing their phones would explode next. People rushed to remove the batteries from their phones, and a voice on a loudspeaker urged everyone to turn off their devices.

Lebanon now faces a chilling reality. In a country where communication devices are essential, they have become instruments of death.

Travis Head’s ODI Century Sparks Speculation Over Test Opener Role Against India

In a dazzling display, Travis Head raised his helmet and bat to the sky, celebrating a century reminiscent of Chris Gayle. This outstanding performance in the ODI against England in Nottingham has sparked discussions about whether Head could replicate this feat as a Test opener against India later this year.

Head cruised to his century in just 30 overs, fueling speculation about his role in Australia’s Test team. Rumors have surfaced that Steven Smith may return to the middle order when India arrives for a five-match Test series. Australia’s coach, Andrew McDonald, hinted at keeping the same batting lineup, which could push Smith to No. 4.

This opens the possibility for Head to step into the opener role. Usman Khawaja, Australia’s current opener, voiced his thoughts, suggesting that Head might be the best fit. Khawaja said, “Travis has been very successful opening in one-day cricket. That confidence can easily transfer to Test matches.”

Challenges of Transitioning to Test Cricket

While Head’s ODI success is undeniable, some caution against underestimating the difference between the formats. Head was facing a white ball on Thursday, rather than the red ball used in Test matches. The small boundaries in Nottingham also differ from Australia’s larger home grounds. Moreover, India’s bowling attack is far more formidable than England’s ODI team.

However, Head’s recent form shows he possesses the qualities needed to succeed as a Test opener. His contribution during the World Cup, including his match-winning 137 in the final against India, demonstrates his ability to handle pressure.

Handling England’s Bowlers with Ease

During Thursday’s match, Head faced a tough challenge from Jofra Archer, who delivered two nearly unplayable balls early in the innings. Despite this, Head stayed focused. He was dropped at just six runs but quickly put it behind him, displaying the mental resilience needed for Test cricket.

Head’s ability to forget the last ball and focus on the next was evident again, as he cruised to a half-century at a run-a-ball pace. By the time he reached 100 from 92 balls and 150 from 123, he had firmly established his dominance.

Tough to Dismiss

England has struggled to contain Head throughout the series. In the recent T20 matches, Head scored 90 runs from just 37 balls. His unorthodox batting style, which allows him to create space even against balls on middle-and-off stump, has baffled England’s bowlers.

Despite this, some believe Head remains vulnerable to short balls, a weakness India might exploit if he opens in Test matches. England’s coach, Marcus Trescothick, acknowledged the challenge of bowling to Head but noted that they hadn’t used the bouncer tactic much on Thursday.

Head Remains Cautious About Test Role

Head himself has shown hesitation about becoming a permanent Test opener. He previously said he would only consider the role in subcontinent conditions, having done so in India last year. When asked about his thoughts after the Nottingham ODI, Head played down the speculation, saying, “Keep the chatter, it makes it interesting.”

Though he remains coy, there is growing anticipation that Head could be the player to bring the same explosive energy to the Test format as David Warner once did. Australia’s selectors have a crucial decision ahead, and it may shape the success of their upcoming home series against India.

LinkedIn Faces Backlash Over Use of User Data to Train AI

LinkedIn is under fire after reports surfaced that the platform is using user data to train artificial intelligence (AI) models without prior consent. Social media users have criticized the company for automatically opting members into the program without informing them beforehand.

What Data is Being Used?

LinkedIn stated on its website that it collects data when users log on. This includes information such as posts, articles, frequency of usage, language preferences, and feedback sent to the company. LinkedIn claims that this data is used to “improve or develop the LinkedIn services.”

Some users, however, have taken issue with LinkedIn’s decision to automatically enroll them in this AI training program, raising concerns about privacy and consent.

Social Media Backlash

The auto-enrollment sparked outrage across social media. Rachel Tobac, Chair of Women In Security and Privacy, voiced her concerns on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “LinkedIn is now using everyone’s content to train their AI tool — they just auto opted everyone in.” Tobac urged users to opt out immediately and criticized the company for not offering a choice before enrolling members.

Tobac further argued that users should not have to undo decisions made for them by companies, encouraging individuals to demand transparency and options from platforms like LinkedIn.

LinkedIn Updates User Agreement

LinkedIn responded to the backlash by notifying users about updates to its user agreement this week. The changes, which will take effect on November 20, clarify privacy practices and offer an opt-out setting for users who do not want their data to be used for AI training.

Kalinda Raina, LinkedIn’s Chief Privacy Officer, released a video explaining that personal data is collected to improve security and products, particularly in the generative AI space. LinkedIn emphasized that users have always had the choice to manage their data usage settings.

LinkedIn’s Response

LinkedIn spokesman Greg Snapper defended the platform’s use of data in AI training, stating that people are looking for ways to enhance their careers. He explained that LinkedIn’s generative AI tools can help users craft resumes, summaries, and messages to improve career opportunities.

“At the end of the day, people want that edge in their careers, and what our gen-AI services do is help give them that assist,” Snapper said. He also noted that LinkedIn has been transparent about its use of automation in its products.

How to Opt-Out of LinkedIn’s AI Training Program

Users who wish to opt out of the AI training feature can do so through their settings. The process is simple and can be done via desktop or the LinkedIn mobile app.

  • On the desktop, users can go to their profile avatar, click “Settings & Privacy,” then select “Data Privacy,” followed by “Data for Generative AI Improvement.” From there, they can toggle the feature off.
  • On the mobile app, the process is similar, starting with the profile avatar, followed by “Settings,” “Data Privacy,” and then toggling off “Data for Generative AI Improvement.”

Privacy Concerns and Data Storage

LinkedIn has clarified that opting out prevents the use of personal data for AI training in the future, but it doesn’t undo the use of data that has already been incorporated into AI models. The company emphasized that privacy-enhancing technology is used to redact personal data from its datasets.

Members can also review or request their personal data through LinkedIn’s “Get a copy of your data” feature under the Data Privacy section.

Looking Ahead

As more platforms incorporate AI into their services, debates over user consent and data privacy are expected to intensify. LinkedIn’s decision to auto-enroll members in its AI training program has raised questions about transparency and user choice, sparking a broader discussion about how personal data should be handled in the age of AI.

Lebanon: Explosions Kill 37 and Wound Over 3,500 in Hezbollah Strongholds

BEIRUT – Lebanon’s Health Minister Firass Abiad reported that 37 people were killed and over 3,500 were wounded in a series of explosions across the country. The explosions were caused by hand-held devices used by Hezbollah members, in what officials blame on Israel.

Deadliest Day Since Conflict Began

On Wednesday, 25 people lost their lives, adding to the 12 deaths from Tuesday. This makes it the deadliest day since the cross-border fighting between Hezbollah and Israel began nearly a year ago. The total death toll now stands at 37, with thousands more injured.

The explosions occurred in Hezbollah strongholds in southern Lebanon, as well as in Beirut and eastern parts of the country. Hand-held radios and paging devices used by Hezbollah members suddenly detonated, causing widespread chaos and destruction.

Two Days of Deadly Explosions

On Tuesday, the first wave of explosions took place. Hundreds of paging devices exploded simultaneously across Lebanon, killing 12 people, including two children, and wounding up to 2,800 others. This unprecedented attack shocked the nation and raised tensions between Hezbollah and Israel.

On Wednesday, another wave of explosions hit, killing 25 more people and injuring over 450. Most of the casualties were in Hezbollah-dominated areas. According to a source close to Hezbollah, walkie-talkies carried by its members suddenly exploded, causing the fatalities.

Hezbollah and Israel Tensions Rise

The Lebanese government and Hezbollah have blamed Israel for the attacks, though Israel has not commented on the allegations. This new escalation comes after nearly a year of ongoing conflict between the two sides. The sudden nature of the attacks and the use of communications devices have intensified the situation.

The explosions have not only claimed lives but also shaken the security of Hezbollah’s strongholds in Lebanon. As the militant group grapples with the aftermath, the tension between Hezbollah and Israel is expected to rise.

International Concerns

The international community has taken notice of the escalating situation. The White House issued a statement urging all parties to avoid further escalation. The statement warned that any rise in violence could destabilize the already fragile situation in the region.

Lebanon has been facing political and economic challenges for years, and this new wave of violence adds to the country’s growing instability. The explosion of Hezbollah’s communication devices is seen as a new form of attack, raising fears of more complex and dangerous assaults in the future.

Government’s Response

Health Minister Firass Abiad has been actively providing updates on the situation. He confirmed the rising death toll and injuries, stressing that medical facilities across Lebanon are overwhelmed. Emergency services are working tirelessly to handle the large number of casualties.

Lebanese authorities are investigating the explosions and their link to Israel, while Hezbollah is expected to retaliate if the accusations are confirmed. The situation remains tense, with further developments expected as the investigation continues.

Future Uncertain for Lebanon

As Lebanon struggles to cope with the aftermath of the deadly explosions, the future remains uncertain. The possibility of further violence looms large as both Hezbollah and Israel maintain silence on the accusations. With thousands wounded and dozens killed, Lebanon finds itself at a critical juncture, hoping to avoid further bloodshed while seeking justice for those affected.

Parliament vs. Supreme Court, Tensions Rise Over Reserved Seats Allocation

ISLAMABAD – The conflict between Pakistan’s parliament and the Supreme Court has intensified. National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq sent a strong letter to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday. The speaker urged the ECP to respect parliamentary sovereignty in allocating reserved seats to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

The Supreme Court had earlier ruled that independent candidates could join political parties after elections and change their allegiance. Eight judges directed the ECP to implement this decision swiftly. On July 12, the court declared PTI eligible for reserved seats that were initially given to other parties in the national and provincial assemblies.

In response, parliament passed the Elections (Second Amendment) Act, 2024, which imposes restrictions on party-switching by independent candidates. This law overrides the Supreme Court’s decision. The bill, introduced by PML-N MNA Bilal Azhar Kayani, prevents post-election party affiliation changes.

Speaker’s Letter Defends Parliament’s Authority

Through his letter, Speaker Ayaz Sadiq challenged the Supreme Court’s ruling, reinforcing parliament’s legislative authority. He emphasized that the newly passed law invalidates the court’s judgment. He pointed out that the Supreme Court ruling came before the law was enacted, making it outdated.

Sadiq stressed the importance of parliamentary sovereignty, stating that undermining this principle could damage public trust in democratic institutions. He argued that the ECP must apply the amended elections law when allocating the contested reserved seats.

Legal Provisions and Retrospective Effect

Sadiq cited sections of the amended law that make political party affiliation by independent candidates irrevocable. He highlighted that these provisions are retroactive, dating back to the 2017 Election Act. According to the speaker, this makes the Supreme Court’s July ruling inapplicable.

The letter also referenced Section 66 of the amended law, which requires candidates to declare their party affiliation before elections. Without this declaration, candidates are considered independent, and their affiliations cannot be altered after the elections.

Political Implications of Reserved Seats

The allocation of reserved seats has significant political consequences. The ruling PML-N-led coalition is currently blocked from obtaining a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly. This limits their ability to pass key legislation, including constitutional amendments.

If the Supreme Court’s decision is implemented, PTI will gain control of the reserved seats. This could make PTI the largest party in the National Assembly, shifting the balance of power away from the government.

Broader Legal and Constitutional Conflict

The speaker’s letter highlights a broader conflict between the legislative and judicial branches of the government. Ayaz Sadiq argued that the amended election law supersedes the Supreme Court’s earlier judgment. He called on the ECP to honor parliament’s laws and uphold democratic principles.

This legal dispute sets the stage for a potential showdown between the judiciary and parliament, with the ECP caught in the middle. The commission now faces the challenge of balancing parliamentary law with judicial orders.

ECP’s Dilemma

The ECP must now decide whether to follow parliament’s amended law or the Supreme Court’s ruling. If the ECP sides with parliament, the ruling coalition could regain its political advantage. On the other hand, if the court’s decision is upheld, PTI will gain key seats, delivering a blow to the government.

The unresolved dispute over reserved seats continues to add complexity to Pakistan’s political landscape, leaving the future balance of power uncertain.

IBA, Stanford Forge Partnership to Transform Education in Pakistan

In a significant event, the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Karachi, announced its partnership with Stanford University’s Life Design Lab. This collaboration was unveiled by Ms. Malahat Awan, Director of Alumni Communications and Corporate Relations (ACRC) at IBA, and Dr. Azam Ali, Assistant Professor at IBA’s School of Business Studies (SBS). The partnership aims to use design thinking to tackle Pakistan’s educational challenges with sustainable, local solutions, fostering innovation and long-term growth.

The event included a panel discussion led by Syed Murad Ali Shah, the Chief Minister of Sindh and Patron of IBA Karachi. He was joined by Dr. S Akbar Zaidi, Executive Director of IBA Karachi, Bill Burnett, Executive Director of Stanford’s Life Design Lab, and Junaid Aziz, Co-Founder of Designing Your Spiritual Life at Stanford. The panel explored the significance of this partnership, highlighting how Stanford’s global expertise aligns with Pakistan’s local needs.

A key focus of the discussion was the role of Junaid Aziz, an IBA alumnus and current faculty member at Stanford’s Life Design Lab. His unique insight into both IBA and Stanford was seen as a critical link between the two institutions. The Chief Minister emphasized that this connection ensures the collaboration goes beyond academic exchange, aiming for real solutions to Pakistan’s educational problems.

Syed Murad Ali Shah also noted that this partnership is not about importing ready-made solutions. Instead, Stanford’s faculty will work closely with IBA to co-create solutions that resonate with Pakistan’s unique challenges. He stressed the importance of Stanford’s experts being present at IBA’s Karachi campus to ensure that the solutions developed are deeply rooted in the local environment.

Bill Burnett, from Stanford, echoed this sentiment, calling the collaboration a “reciprocal learning experience.” He emphasized that while Stanford brings its expertise, it also hopes to learn from Pakistan’s unique challenges. According to Burnett, IBA will become a hub for innovation, equipping the next generation of Pakistani leaders with the tools to solve complex societal issues.

Dr. Zaidi of IBA added that this partnership is built for long-term impact. By embedding new teaching methods into IBA’s educational framework, the collaboration will nurture innovation and create practical, sustainable solutions.

As the panel concluded, the Chief Minister reaffirmed that this partnership, driven by IBA alumni now at Stanford, is a bold step forward for Pakistan. It bridges the gap between local challenges and world-class innovation, setting the stage for a new era in Pakistan’s educational system.

Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister visited Stanford’s Life Design Lab with Dr. Zaidi and other IBA leaders. They discussed how the Life Design Lab would help train and upskill IBA faculty, ensuring that students benefit from this partnership immediately. Faculty workshops, curriculum updates, and Stanford’s hands-on involvement are expected to fast-track the integration of innovative teaching methods at IBA.

During the visit, the Chief Minister was also invited to explore further collaborations with Stanford’s Biosecurity and Pandemic Preparedness Initiative. They discussed future pandemic readiness and building global alliances for vaccine development. The Sindh government’s efforts during COVID-19 were also praised, with discussions on expanding regional research collaborations.

This partnership between IBA and Stanford represents a transformative shift in Pakistan’s educational landscape, positioning IBA as a leader in innovation and societal progress.

Javeria Abbasi Shares Moments from Her Second Marriage

Veteran Pakistani actress Javeria Abbasi has shared photos and videos from her second marriage on Instagram. The images show her surrounded by loved ones, wearing traditional floral garlands, a symbol of blessing in Pakistani culture.

Dressed in a pink and gold outfit, Javeria looked radiant and joyful as she embraced this new chapter in her life. However, she chose not to reveal her husband’s identity in the images shared. Fans and fellow celebrities have flooded her social media with well-wishes, celebrating her happiness.

In her Instagram post, Javeria expressed her joy, captioning it with, “We love happiness.” Her post received widespread attention, with people congratulating her on this beautiful milestone.

Earlier in May, Javeria Abbasi had announced her engagement on social media, and she later confirmed her marriage during a television appearance. She has married businessman Adeel Haider, who also has a passion for photography. Despite sharing moments from her marriage, Javeria has kept much of her personal life private.

Javeria was previously married to actor Shamoon Abbasi, with whom she shares a daughter, Anzela Abbasi. The couple separated in 2009 but have continued to co-parent their daughter. Anzela, now an actress herself, played a significant role in encouraging her mother to remarry.

In an interview earlier this year, Javeria revealed that she had been married for three months and was enjoying a peaceful life with her new husband. She also shared that Adeel, her new husband, is not involved in the entertainment industry and runs a business. This new chapter of her life marks a shift away from the limelight, allowing her to focus on her family.

Javeria’s announcement of her engagement and marriage had come as a surprise to many of her fans. She had shared that her decision to remarry was fully supported by her daughter Anzela, as well as by her close family and friends. Javeria had taken inspiration from veteran actresses like Bushra Ansari and Samina Ahmed, who found love later in life and encouraged her to embrace happiness.

In fact, Bushra Ansari had heartfelt conversations with Javeria, advising her to not hesitate and to remarry when she found the right person. These words of wisdom had a strong impact on Javeria as she navigated through a time of personal loss and change.

Javeria also opened up about how her mother’s illness and eventual passing had left her feeling a deep sense of loneliness. Her mother’s death, coupled with the marriage of her daughter Anzela, left her contemplating her own future and happiness. The passing of her mother created a void in her life, leading her to reflect on her own needs and desires.

With the support of her loved ones, Javeria decided to embark on a new journey, finding solace in her second marriage. Now, she is focused on building a peaceful life with her new husband and enjoying the simple joys that come with it.

Imran Khan Alleges Term Extensions, Bilawal Predicts Next Chief Justice

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has accused the government of pursuing constitutional amendments to extend the terms of three top officials. These include Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, the Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court, and the Chief Election Commissioner.

Speaking to the media at Adiala Jail, Imran Khan claimed that the government is amending the constitution to protect fraudulent election results and keep these officials in power. “They are amending the constitution to extend the terms of three umpires,” he said.

He warned that if Chief Justice Isa is removed, investigations into the May 9 protests and alleged rigged elections would begin. Imran criticized the delay in addressing the May 9 events, accusing the government of attempting to dismantle his party.

Imran stated that he had been targeted with over 140 legal cases before May 9, and the attempts to remove him intensified after the date. He expressed concern that if a new chief justice takes office, the truth about May 9 will be revealed. He also accused the government of undermining Pakistan’s judicial and electoral systems by delaying tribunal decisions on the February 8 election.

Bilawal Bhutto Predicts Next Chief Justice

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari believes that Justice Mansoor Ali Shah will succeed Qazi Faez Isa as the next Chief Justice of Pakistan. In a televised interview, Bilawal expressed confidence that Justice Mansoor will take office on October 26, after Justice Isa retires.

His remarks came after weeks of political uncertainty as the ruling coalition delayed plans to introduce a controversial constitutional amendment package in parliament. The proposed amendments reportedly included provisions to extend the retirement age of judges, which could have impacted Justice Isa’s tenure. However, the government’s plan was stalled due to the lack of support from a key ally, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, leader of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F).

Bilawal emphasized the need for comprehensive judicial reforms. He called for the creation of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission under the Charter of Democracy. “We waited almost 50 years for justice in Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto’s murder case,” he said, urging for urgent changes in the judicial system.

Bilawal also pointed out that the Supreme Court spends 90% of its time handling political cases, which only make up 15% of its workload. He argued that this imbalance harms ordinary citizens seeking justice and reinforces the need for reforms in the judiciary and the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

Government Faces Deadlock on Amendments

Bilawal expressed disappointment with Imran Khan’s recent statements, saying they derailed efforts to engage the PTI on constitutional amendments. He stated that it was difficult for the government to involve PTI in these discussions.

Despite the deadlock, Bilawal confirmed that the PPP would continue working on its proposal for a constitutional court, which will be shared with Maulana Fazl. He acknowledged ongoing efforts to draft a joint proposal with JUI-F, which insists on involving opposition parties, including PTI, in the talks.

As Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa’s retirement approaches, the government faces pressure to resolve the political deadlock and push forward its legislative agenda. However, Bilawal admitted that the coalition lacks the numbers in parliament to pass the constitutional amendments.

Justice Mansoor Ali Shah’s expected appointment as the next Chief Justice comes at a crucial time for Pakistan’s judiciary. The debate over judicial independence and political interference continues to dominate the national conversation.

Glimpses of 12 Rabi-ul-Awal Decorations from Across Pakistan

Pakistan is filled with religious zeal as the nation prepares to celebrate Eid Milad-un-Nabi, marking the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Muslims worldwide observe this occasion on 12th Rabi ul Awal each year, but Pakistan’s streets and buildings illuminated with vibrant lights bring the celebration to life in a unique way.

In every city and town, roads and structures are adorned with colourful lights, particularly green, symbolizing the spirit of the event. From bustling metropolises to the smallest villages, every corner of the country reflects the joy and reverence of this special occasion. The lighting and decorations serve as a reminder of the Prophet’s arrival as the last messenger of Islam.

People come together in mosques and homes for special prayer ceremonies, offering their gratitude and prayers for the blessings bestowed upon them. The day serves not only as a religious observance but also as a moment for Pakistanis to reflect on unity, peace, and the values taught by the Prophet.

This year’s celebration, like every year, is expected to be a grand display of faith and unity across the country.

Govt Reduces Petrol Price by Rs10, Diesel by Rs13 per Litre

The government has announced a reduction in fuel prices. Petrol prices will drop by Rs10 per litre due to a decrease in international market rates. This change comes after the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) calculated the new consumer prices.

According to a statement from the Finance Division on Sunday, the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) will also be reduced. HSD will decrease by Rs13.06 per litre, bringing the new price to Rs249.69 from Rs262.75.

These new fuel prices will be effective by 16 September, 2024.

Related: Petrol Price Expected to Drop by Rs12 Per Litre

Here are the updated prices for key products:

  • Petrol: Reduced from Rs259.10 to Rs249.10 (-Rs10.00)
  • High-Speed Diesel (HSD): Reduced from Rs262.75 to Rs249.69 (-Rs13.06)
  • Kerosene: Reduced from Rs169.62 to Rs158.47 (-Rs11.15)
  • Light Diesel Oil: Reduced from Rs154.05 to Rs141.93 (-Rs12.12)

This is the fourth consecutive fuel price cut in the last two months. In the previous review, the government had already reduced the price of petrol by Rs1.86 per litre, from Rs260.96 to Rs259.10.

Petrol is widely used in private vehicles, rickshaws, and two-wheelers. High fuel prices heavily affect middle and lower-middle-class households, as many rely on petrol for daily commuting.

High-speed diesel (HSD) plays a crucial role in heavy transport. It powers trucks, buses, trains, and agricultural machinery like tractors. A price increase in HSD impacts the overall cost of goods transportation. This, in turn, raises prices for vegetables and other essential food items.

The recent cuts in fuel prices offer some relief for consumers. The lower cost of diesel may help reduce transportation costs, potentially easing inflationary pressure on food and other essential commodities.

Fazlur Rehman Rejects Judges’ Tenure Extension

ISLAMABAD: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has declined to support the government’s proposal. The proposal aimed to extend the tenure or increase the retirement age of judges. His refusal has placed the government’s constitutional amendment package in jeopardy.

This move has become a significant hurdle for the ruling coalition. The government had been hoping to gather enough support to pass major changes to the judicial and parliamentary systems. Now, without Fazlur Rehman’s backing, their efforts are stalled.

Sources say the opposition parties, including PTI, have shown conditional support for the formation of a constitutional court. However, they are divided on the issue of extending judges’ tenures. The disagreement has caused further delays.

A special parliamentary committee meeting was held to discuss the proposed amendment package. After several rounds of consultations, the meeting ended without any agreement. No consensus was reached on the key issues.

Meanwhile, the National Assembly session, originally scheduled for 11 a.m. on Sunday, faced delays. After consultations between the government and the opposition, it finally began late at night. However, it was quickly adjourned until Monday. Similarly, the Senate meeting was also deferred to Monday.

The federal cabinet meeting, which was summoned to approve the draft amendment, was postponed as well. Sources indicate that the amendment bill is expected to be presented in parliament soon.

The federal capital was busy on Sunday. Meetings between ruling and opposition party members took place throughout the day. The government is trying to introduce a constitutional package that would give it more control over judicial procedures. However, with JUI-F’s refusal, these efforts are faltering.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman played a central role in the discussions. The ruling coalition is pushing to pass the bill, while the opposition is trying to block it. Both sides are vying for Fazl’s support.

JUI-F General Secretary Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri spoke to journalists outside Fazl’s residence. He stated that JUI-F had not yet received the draft of the amendment. “How can we vote before analyzing it?” he asked.

In pursuit of securing the necessary votes for a constitutional amendment, government officials visited Fazl’s residence. Deputy Prime Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar led the delegation. They discussed legal and constitutional matters in detail. Other notable attendees included Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.

Fazlur Rehman also met with PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and PTI leaders. These meetings were aimed at gauging support for the proposed amendment.

Speaking about the ongoing negotiations, JUI-F’s Kamran Murtaza said that the party is considering the government’s suggestions. However, they have not yet made any final decisions. He emphasized that all political parties, including PTI, should be taken into confidence before any constitutional amendment.

After a series of meetings, Maulana Fazlur Rehman arrived at Parliament House for a special parliamentary committee session. When asked about the outcomes, he told journalists to “stay tuned.”

The government is trying to secure the two-thirds majority needed to pass the constitutional amendment. In the National Assembly, they need 224 votes. In the Senate, they require 64 votes. However, despite claims by Defense Minister Khawaja Asif that they had enough support, the numbers remain elusive.

The constitutional package aims to bring major reforms to the judicial system. It includes proposals for the formation of a constitutional court and amendments to judges’ appointments. The ruling coalition remains hopeful but faces challenges due to the opposition’s divided stance and Fazlur Rehman’s critical decision to withhold support.

Lionel Messi Shines in Return as Inter Miami Defeats Philadelphia Union

Inter Miami welcomed Philadelphia Union to Chase Stadium on Saturday, marking the return of Lionel Messi to the lineup after a 105-day absence. Messi, who had been sidelined with an ankle injury sustained during the Copa America final, made an immediate impact, scoring twice in the first half. His performance helped Miami secure a 2-1 victory, extending their winning streak to five games.

Philadelphia Union took an early lead, scoring just two minutes into the match. However, Miami quickly regrouped, with Messi leading the charge. In the 26th minute, Luis Suarez set up Messi for the equalizer, capping off a well-orchestrated team play. The build-up began deep in Miami’s half, and Philadelphia’s defense couldn’t stop the Herons’ fluid movement. Messi’s finish was clinical, reaffirming his importance to the team.

Messi wasn’t done yet. In the 44th minute, Suarez once again played a crucial role with a clever dummy run. Jordi Alba delivered a perfect cross, and Lionel Messi capitalized to give Miami the lead just before halftime. Messi’s return had instantly rejuvenated the squad, and his two goals underscored his ability to change the course of a match single-handedly.

Miami had already been in excellent form, winning four matches in a row during Messi’s absence. With his return, the team’s attack seemed to reach a new level, putting pressure on Philadelphia’s defense throughout the game. Suarez and Messi’s partnership, along with Alba’s contributions from the back, proved too much for the Union to handle.

Read: Younis Khan Advises Babar Azam to Focus on Performance

On the defensive side, Tomas Aviles had a mixed game. Despite his solid defensive efforts, he picked up a yellow card, which means he will be suspended for Miami’s next match due to yellow card accumulation. Aviles will need to manage his discipline moving forward, but Miami’s ability to overturn a deficit quickly means they can afford some defensive mistakes without losing their momentum.

Inter Miami remains at the top of the league, leading the race for the Supporters’ Shield. Their dynamic attack and Messi’s return have made them favorites to break the MLS points record of 73. If they continue their goal-scoring form, that record could be within reach.

Messi’s return to the lineup is a huge boost for Miami as they push for a historic season. His seamless re-entry after more than three months off the field showed his world-class skill and determination. As the season progresses, Messi’s presence will be crucial as Miami aims for both league dominance and a potential run in the playoffs.

With five consecutive wins and Messi back to his best, Inter Miami is poised for a strong finish to the season. Their attacking flair and ability to respond under pressure make them one of the most dangerous teams in Major League Soccer. As long as Messi, Suarez, and Alba keep delivering, Miami will remain a force to be reckoned with.

Younis Khan Advises Babar Azam to Focus on Performance

KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan offered advice to current white-ball captain Babar Azam, urging him to focus on his performance. Speaking to the media on Saturday, Younis emphasized that Babar should concentrate on his skills, not external pressures.

“My only advice to Babar Azam is to perform,” Younis said. He reminded everyone that Babar became captain because of his strong performances. “There are high expectations from Babar, but his real answers should come from his bat and ball, not social media,” he added.

Younis further advised Babar to look beyond captaincy. He cited Virat Kohli’s example, saying the Indian star improved his game after stepping down as captain. “Performance is what matters. Captaincy is a small thing,” Younis stressed.

Younis, who holds the record for the most Test runs for Pakistan, also praised Babar’s potential. He believes Babar can surpass his record and reach 15,000 runs in Test cricket.

In addition to advice for Babar, Younis turned his focus to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). He urged the board to revive departmental cricket, which he credited for his own career. “I played cricket because of UBL. Departmental cricket has supported many players, and its revival is crucial,” he said.

While franchise leagues have gained prominence, Younis warned against ignoring domestic cricket. He believes a balance between franchise and domestic cricket is necessary for the future of the sport in Pakistan.

The PCB is set to hold a significant meeting on September 22, called the “Connection Camp,” to discuss the future of the national cricket team. Leadership in all formats is also expected to be on the agenda.

Younis urged the PCB to avoid sudden changes, particularly in coaching and leadership roles. He believes stability is key to the team’s long-term success and growth.

Younis Khan’s message to Babar Azam was clear: focus on performance, not distractions. He also called for the PCB to prioritize the revival of departmental cricket and maintain balance in the domestic setup.

Moeen Ali Retires from International Cricket at 37

England all-rounder Moeen Ali has announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 37. The Birmingham-born player, known for his left-handed batting and right-arm off-spin, confirmed his decision after being left out of England’s squad for the Australia series this month.

“I’m 37 years old and wasn’t picked for the series,” said Moeen. “I’ve played a lot for England, and it’s time for the next generation. I’ve done my part.”

Moeen made his international debut in 2014 and played in 68 Tests, 138 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), and 92 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) for England. Over his career, he scored 6,678 runs and took 366 wickets. His achievements include winning the 2019 Cricket World Cup and the 2022 T20 World Cup with England.

Moeen last played for England during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. He decided to step away from the game after realizing he was no longer in England’s future plans. Reflecting on his Test career, Moeen became only the 16th player to achieve the milestone of 3,000 runs and 200 wickets in Tests by the end of the Ashes series.

Born in Birmingham on June 18, 1987, Moeen Ali is of Pakistani descent and comes from the Mirpuri community. His grandfather emigrated from Pakistan to England, where Moeen rose to cricket stardom.

Moeen initially retired from Test cricket in 2021 but was recalled for the Ashes series following an injury to fellow spinner Jack Leach. He played a significant role as England’s spin specialist under coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes.

In Tests, Moeen scored 3,094 runs at an average of 28.12, with five centuries and 15 half-centuries. His highest score was 155 not out against Sri Lanka in 2016. With the ball, he claimed 204 wickets at an average of 36.66, with his best figures being 6-53.

Moeen made his ODI debut in 2014 against the West Indies and contributed significantly throughout his career. In white-ball cricket, he scored 2,355 runs in ODIs and took 111 wickets. In T20Is, he scored 1,229 runs and took 51 wickets, becoming a valuable player for England in all formats.

Former Pakistan spinner Saqlain Mushtaq praised Moeen on social media, calling him a “dedicated and hardworking player.” Saqlain also wished him well in retirement, acknowledging the significant impact Moeen had on the game.

Throughout his career, Moeen delivered several standout performances. He hit eight sixes in a Test match against India in 2014, setting a new record for the most sixes by an England player in a Test match. In 2017, he became the fifth-fastest player to reach 2,000 runs and 100 wickets in Tests. Moeen also took a hat-trick against South Africa in 2017, securing a series victory.

Moeen Ali’s all-round abilities made him a key player for England, and he led the team as captain in a T20I match in 2020. He retires as one of England’s most influential cricketers, having left a lasting legacy in both red and white-ball formats.
