KARACHI: Zubair Motiwala, Chairman of the Businessmen Group (BMG), emphasized the critical role of industrialization in Pakistan’s development at an event hosted by the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) in Karachi. He highlighted that the country cannot progress without industrial growth and urged the need for reducing production costs to compete globally.
Motiwala expressed concerns about the current economic environment, describing it as one of “de-industrialization.” He warned that restricting the export sector could further limit Pakistan’s ability to grow exports. He called for a report comparing production costs with neighboring countries to identify areas for cost reduction, aiming to meet the government’s export target of $15 billion, with $7 billion earmarked for rice exports.
KATI President Johar Qandhari presents a shield to BMG Chairman Zubair Motiwala, joined by Zubair Chhaya, Nighat Awan, Muslim Mohammadi, Javed Balwani, Altaf Ghaffar, Masood Naqi, Anjum Nisar, and AQ Khalil.
KATI President Echoes Concerns
KATI President Johar Qandhari supported Motiwala’s views, stating that Karachi’s industries face discrimination despite their significant contribution to the national economy. He stressed the need for the government to address the deteriorating infrastructure and lack of investment in Karachi, which hampers the city’s industrial potential. “Pakistan cannot achieve economic stability without focusing on Karachi,” Qandhari warned.
Zubair Chhaya, Deputy Patron-in-Chief of BMG, praised the collaboration between KATI and BMG, which has resolved numerous business challenges. Altaf Ghaffar, Acting President of the Karachi Chamber, urged unity among the business community to tackle the growing challenges faced by Karachi’s industries.
The event, attended by key business figures, underscored the importance of joint efforts to promote industrialization and address the issues affecting Karachi’s economy.
Faisalabad: Kamran Ghulam’s brilliant century, supported by half-centuries from Iftikhar Ahmed and Abdul Samad, helped the Markhors post an imposing 347-6 against the Panthers in the opening match of the Champions One-Day Cup on Thursday.
After being invited to bat first, Markhors lost both openers early, with 64 runs on the board by the 13.2 over. Kamran Ghulam then partnered with skipper Mohammad Rizwan, building a strong 133-run stand for the third wicket.
Ghulam played aggressively, attacking the Panthers’ bowlers, while Rizwan provided stability, scoring 45 off 57 balls before being dismissed by Mohammad Hasnain. Mubasir Khan then removed Salman Ali Agha in the next over, bringing Iftikhar Ahmed to the crease.
Ghulam continued his assault, adding 63 runs with Iftikhar for the fifth wicket. His entertaining knock ended when Hasnain caught him off Amad Butt, but not before he scored the first century of the tournament. Ghulam’s impressive innings of 115 came from 102 balls, featuring twelve boundaries and three sixes.
Abdul Samad joined Iftikhar and unleashed a flurry of boundaries, scoring 62 off just 25 balls, including four boundaries and six towering sixes. Iftikhar remained unbeaten with 57 from 44 balls, which included seven boundaries and a six, helping the Markhors reach a competitive total of 347-6 in 50 overs.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) informed the Sindh High Court (SHC) on Thursday that social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, has been restored for users across the country.
PTA’s lawyer, Ahsan Imam, announced that the authority has withdrawn its previous notification regarding the suspension of X services. This statement was submitted in response to the SHC’s inquiry about the ban on the platform in Pakistan.
Following the PTA’s update, the court postponed the hearing for two weeks.
Previously, on April 17, the SHC had directed the Ministry of Interior to revoke its letter that suspended the platform, giving a one-week deadline for compliance.
The ban on X was initially imposed in February after the 2024 general elections, restricting access to the platform nationwide.
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday questioned the federal government over the possibility of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan facing a military trial. Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb expressed concern over the trial of a civilian in a military court, stating that it was worrisome for both the petitioner and the court.
“Is Imran Khan’s military trial under consideration?” Justice Aurangzeb asked during the hearing of Khan’s petition, which was filed under Article 199 of the Constitution. The petition challenges speculations that the former prime minister may be tried by a military court for his alleged involvement in the May 9 riots, which saw military installations vandalized after Khan’s arrest in a graft case.
The judge referred to statements from government officials, including Defence Minister Khawaja Asif and Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, which have sparked speculation about Khan’s possible military trial. Asif recently told a private news channel that there was growing evidence against Khan, making his military trial more likely.
Justice Aurangzeb emphasized that Khan, as a civilian, should not be tried in a military court. He urged the federal government to clarify its position on the matter, noting that if such a trial were planned, it would have significant legal implications. The court asked the additional attorney general to consult the federal government and provide a clear stance by Monday.
The judge also referred to an anti-terrorism court’s July decision that connected Khan to the May 9 incidents, which had led to widespread unrest. The Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) government had initiated military trials for individuals involved in targeting state and military installations during those riots.
Justice Aurangzeb further pointed out that the Supreme Court had already ruled on civilians’ military trials, declaring them null and void in an October 2023 verdict. However, that decision was later suspended by a 5:1 majority ruling in December, pending the court’s final verdict.
The IHC adjourned the case until September 16, awaiting the federal government’s response.
The Power Division announced on Wednesday that consumers could benefit from a reduction of up to Rs2.65 per unit (including taxes) due to fuel price adjustments. The statement explained that electricity prices have decreased by Rs2.93 per unit due to fuel price adjustments. However, there has been an increase of Rs1.74 per unit under quarterly adjustments.
As a result, agricultural and domestic consumers using up to 300 units will receive a Rs2.19 per unit reduction in their bills, while others will see a relief of Rs2.65 per unit.
Millions of Pakistanis, already struggling with skyrocketing utility bills, will see some relief in their September electricity charges.
This announcement comes as the government, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, faces mounting criticism over high electricity tariffs, which have worsened the inflation crisis. In response, the government is renegotiating contracts with independent power producers (IPPs) in a bid to bring down unsustainable electricity rates.
Minister Awais Leghari, who heads the Power Division, emphasized the need for reform, stating that the current pricing structure is unsustainable. Rising power costs have sparked social unrest and impacted industries, as the economy struggles under the weight of inflation.
In July, the government announced a Rs50 billion relief package for electricity consumers. The package protects customers using up to 200 units from further increases in their tariffs for three months, easing the burden for many during the inflation surge.
The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) reduced its key policy rate by 200 basis points to 17.5%, effective from September 13, 2024, as inflation fell to 9.6%, marking the first single-digit figure in three years.
The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) noted that inflation dropped faster than expected, due to delayed energy price hikes and lower global oil and food prices.
Despite uncertainties in the agricultural sector, the SBP expects stable growth, driven by reduced inflation and improved remittance inflows. The current account deficit is projected to remain within 0% to 1% of GDP.

ISLAMABAD – The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has fined K-Electric (KE) Rs 10 million over electrocution incidents that claimed 33 lives in Karachi between 2022 and 2023. NEPRA imposed the fine after rejecting KE’s response to a show-cause notice regarding the fatal incidents.
The regulatory body has ordered K-Electric to deposit the fine within 15 days and directed the utility company to pay Rs 3.5 million in compensation to the families of each victim. Additionally, K-Electric has been instructed to offer employment to a member of Muhammad Aslam’s family, one of the victims of the electrocution incidents.
NEPRA’s investigation highlighted the severity of the situation, holding K-Electric accountable for one of the incidents. However, K-Electric maintained that it was not negligent in 32 out of the 33 reported cases.
“K-Electric’s response was deemed unsatisfactory in one incident, leading to the imposed fine. However, the NEPRA investigation report found no negligence on KE’s part in the remaining 32 incidents that occurred between July 2022 and June 2023,” said a K-Electric spokesperson. The company also announced that it would review NEPRA’s findings thoroughly before responding further.
The fine and compensation orders come amid growing concerns over public safety and the need for better infrastructure to prevent such tragic incidents in Karachi. NEPRA’s actions aim to hold utility providers accountable for maintaining adequate safety standards to protect citizens from similar incidents in the future.
KARACHI – A fire at an illegal petrol pump in Karachi’s Shah Faisal area claimed one life and trapped residents inside a nearby building. The fire, which broke out on Monday, engulfed the structure, creating panic as thick smoke filled the area.
Initial reports confirmed that the petrol pump was operating illegally beneath a residential building, posing a significant risk to those living above. Rescue teams struggled to evacuate trapped residents due to the heavy smoke and heat. Although one fire unit was initially dispatched, five more fire tenders were called to control the blaze.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Korangi, Tauheed Mumtaz, confirmed that one person was found dead. Several others, trapped on the rooftop, were successfully rescued. A semi-conscious individual was pulled from the building as well. Multiple motorcycles parked outside the illegal petrol pump were destroyed in the fire.
Despite the challenges, firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control. Rescue teams are expected to conduct a final search after the area has cooled.
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah took notice of the incident, ordering an immediate rescue operation. He directed the Karachi Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner to ensure all residents were moved to safety. In a statement, CM Murad emphasized that strict legal action would be taken against those responsible for operating illegal petrol pumps.
“No one has the right to play with people’s lives,” said the chief minister, calling for a widespread crackdown on illegal petrol sales across Karachi.

Vice President Kamala Harris confronted Donald Trump head-on during a heated presidential debate on Tuesday. She targeted Trump’s stance on abortion limits, his fitness for office, and his numerous legal challenges, forcing Trump onto the defensive as both candidates sought a turning point in the closely contested election.
Harris, a former prosecutor, repeatedly unsettled Trump, who responded with several false claims. At one point, Harris mocked his campaign rallies, suggesting people left early out of boredom, to which Trump angrily boasted about having the “biggest rallies in the history of politics.” He also made an unsubstantiated claim that Haitian immigrants in Ohio were “eating the pets” of residents, which Harris dismissed as extreme.
The debate featured clashes over immigration, foreign policy, and healthcare, though policy specifics were scarce. Harris’ aggressive approach put Trump in a tough spot, and some Republicans acknowledged his struggle to stay on message. Marc Short, former chief of staff for Trump’s ex-vice president, Mike Pence, noted that Trump missed an opportunity to focus on economic issues and instead got sidetracked by Harris’ jabs.
Following the debate, pop icon Taylor Swift endorsed Harris on Instagram, boosting her campaign. Within minutes, Swift’s post garnered millions of likes, adding momentum to Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz.
PredictIt’s online market showed Trump’s chances of victory dipping during the debate, while Harris’ odds improved. Confident in her performance, Harris immediately challenged Trump to a second debate, further escalating the rivalry as the election draws closer.
ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senator Falak Naz faced suspension from the Senate on Tuesday for allegedly hurling abuse at senior politician Faisal Vawda during a heated Senate session. The incident occurred while Vawda delivered a controversial speech, prompting a strong reaction from the PTI senator.
The verbal clash took place during a session presided over by Senate Chairman Yusuf Raza Gilani. Vawda’s speech, which included sharp criticism of PTI and its leadership, escalated tensions within the chamber. As per the details, Vawda made critical remarks about the founder of PTI, sparking an immediate response from Senator Naz. Confronting Vawda directly, Naz questioned, “How dare you take our leader’s name?” The exchange quickly escalated into a shouting match, with both sides trading harsh words.
Chairman Senate Takes Action
The incident prompted swift action from Senate Chairman Yusuf Raza Gilani, who suspended Senator Falak Naz’s membership for two days. Gilani cited her inappropriate language as the reason for the suspension and adjourned the session for the day. Despite calls for calm from the chairman, Naz refused to apologize for her remarks, leading to the disciplinary action.
Vawda, who had earlier taken the floor to speak on various political issues, welcomed the suspension, demanding stricter actions to maintain decorum in the legislative institution. He argued that such behavior should not be tolerated, particularly in the country’s highest legislative body.
Faisal Vawda’s Speech Sparks Controversy
During his address, Faisal Vawda spoke on political and military accountability, specifically praising Army Chief General Asim Munir for initiating reforms within the military. Vawda emphasized that the army’s efforts were aligned with Pakistan’s best interests. He criticized PTI for its inconsistent stance on amendments to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), accusing the party of initially opposing the amendments but later benefiting from them.
Highlighting the growing political divide in Pakistan, Vawda urged PTI to prioritize national stability over internal conflict. He also took aim at PML-N, stressing that accountability should be upheld across all institutions, including political parties.
Vawda’s most scathing remarks, however, were directed at PTI members, including Ali Amin Gandapur, whom he accused of plotting to destabilize the country. He referenced Gandapur’s speech, accusing him of irresponsibly promoting unrest, adding, “If you speak of breaking the jail, the responsibility of PTI founder also falls on you [Ali Amin Gandapur].”
Tensions Rise in Senate
The remarks incited protests from PTI senators, who objected to Vawda’s accusations. Meanwhile, government senators defended Vawda, further inflaming tensions in the chamber. Vawda warned PTI members, “Be patient. This is just the beginning. The institutions and government are too weak to stop your abusive language.”
Despite repeated calls for order by Chairman Gilani, the heated exchange continued, culminating in the suspension of Senator Falak Naz. PTI members demanded an apology from Vawda for his inflammatory remarks, but their calls were ignored.
Dengue fever is a viral infection transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which thrives in areas where stagnant water provides an ideal breeding ground. While dengue is a concern in many tropical and subtropical regions, the connection between keeping pets, open water sources, and the risk of attracting dengue-carrying mosquitoes is often overlooked. Many pet owners, especially those who provide fresh water for their pets, may unknowingly create breeding spots for mosquitoes.
Let’s talk about how dengue fever spreads, how mosquitoes breed, and why it’s essential for pet owners to stay vigilant about maintaining a clean environment.
Understanding Dengue Fever: How It Spreads
Dengue fever is caused by the dengue virus, which is transmitted to humans through the bites of infected female Aedes mosquitoes. These mosquitoes typically bite during the day, especially early in the morning and before sunset. Once bitten by an infected mosquito, symptoms of dengue can appear within 4 to 10 days and may include high fever, severe headaches, pain behind the eyes, joint and muscle pain, skin rashes, and mild bleeding from the gums or nose.
While dengue can range from mild to severe, its most dangerous form, dengue hemorrhagic fever, can lead to death if not treated properly. The Aedes mosquitoes, specifically Aedes aegypti, prefer to lay their eggs in clean, still water, making any exposed water source a potential breeding ground. This includes pet water bowls, bird baths, and any containers left outdoors.
The Connection Between Pets and Mosquito Breeding
For those who own pets, the idea of keeping fresh water out for them, whether indoors or outdoors, is second nature. However, many pet owners may not realize that by leaving water sources exposed, especially outdoors, they are potentially inviting Aedes mosquitoes into their living environment.
Mosquitoes, particularly those that transmit dengue, are highly adaptive and can lay eggs in the smallest amounts of water. Pet water bowls, even if changed daily, can become a prime location for mosquito breeding. Bird baths, garden ponds, or any containers that collect rainwater, such as plant saucers and discarded tires, also serve as ideal habitats for mosquito larvae.
It’s important to note that mosquitoes can lay eggs in water as shallow as 1 centimeter. These eggs can hatch into larvae in as little as 24 to 48 hours, making stagnant water one of the most critical factors in controlling the mosquito population.
Warning Signs of Dengue Fever?
Recognizing the symptoms of dengue fever early is crucial for effective management and treatment. If you or someone you know is experiencing any of the following warning signs, seek medical attention immediately:
Abdominal Pain or Tenderness: Persistent or severe pain in the abdominal area can indicate complications associated with dengue fever.
Persistent Vomiting: Continuous vomiting may suggest severe dengue and requires prompt medical evaluation.
Clinical Fluid Accumulation: Fluid buildup in the body, such as in the abdomen or lungs, can be a sign of serious dengue complications.
Mucosal Bleeding: Bleeding from mucous membranes, such as the gums or nose, is a warning sign that should not be ignored.
Lethargy or Restlessness: Unusual drowsiness or agitation can signal a progression to severe dengue.
Liver Enlargement > 2 cm: Significant enlargement of the liver, detected during a physical examination, can indicate severe dengue.
Laboratory Findings: An increasing hematocrit (HCT) level combined with a rapid decrease in platelet count may signal the onset of severe dengue and warrants urgent medical attention.
Early detection and treatment are critical to managing dengue effectively and preventing severe complications.
How to Keep Pets Hydrated Without Attracting Mosquitoes
As a responsible pet owner, providing clean, fresh water for your animals is crucial, especially during hot weather. However, there are simple yet effective strategies to reduce the risk of creating mosquito breeding spots around your home:
1. Change Water Bowls Regularly
One of the easiest ways to prevent mosquito breeding is by changing your pets’ water bowls frequently. Ideally, you should replace the water at least once or twice a day. Mosquitoes can lay eggs in stagnant water within 24 hours, so frequently changing the water disrupts their breeding cycle.
2. Use Mosquito-Proof Water Bowls
Some pet owners have turned to mosquito-proof water bowls that are designed to minimize standing water and make it difficult for mosquitoes to access the water. These bowls often have a design that covers most of the water surface, leaving only a small drinking area for pets.
3. Keep Water Bowls Indoors
If possible, keep your pets’ water bowls indoors. This not only keeps the water cleaner but also reduces the likelihood of mosquitoes accessing it. For outdoor pets, consider placing water bowls in shaded or covered areas, as mosquitoes prefer to breed in sunny spots.
4. Avoid Overwatering Plants
Overwatering plants can lead to stagnant water accumulating in the soil or saucers under the pots, which mosquitoes love. Be mindful of how much water your plants need and avoid leaving saucers filled with water for extended periods.
5. Cover and Clean Open Water Sources
If you have open water sources in your yard, such as bird baths, ponds, or rainwater collection barrels, ensure they are covered or cleaned regularly. For ponds, consider adding fish that eat mosquito larvae, such as guppies or goldfish. Alternatively, use mosquito dunks, which are non-toxic and help to kill larvae.
Understanding the Mosquito Breeding Cycle
To better understand how to prevent mosquito breeding, it’s essential to know their life cycle. The Aedes mosquito has four stages of development: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant water, and these eggs hatch into larvae within 48 hours. The larvae then develop into pupae, which in turn become adult mosquitoes in about 5 to 10 days, depending on environmental conditions.
Adult mosquitoes can live for several weeks, and during this time, female mosquitoes seek blood meals to nourish their eggs. Understanding this cycle underscores the importance of preventing mosquitoes from having access to standing water, as it takes only a few days for an entire new generation of mosquitoes to emerge.
Dengue Prevention: Beyond Just Pet Owners
While pet owners need to be particularly cautious about open water sources, dengue prevention is a responsibility that extends to the entire community. The following additional measures can help reduce the risk of dengue:
Use Mosquito Repellents: Apply mosquito repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus when spending time outdoors.
Install Screens on Windows and Doors: Mosquito-proof your home by installing screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering.
Wear Protective Clothing: When outdoors, especially during peak mosquito activity, wear long sleeves, long pants, and light-colored clothing to reduce exposure to mosquito bites.
Eliminate Other Breeding Grounds: In addition to water bowls, inspect your property for other potential breeding spots, such as clogged gutters, uncovered trash bins, or buckets left outside.
Protecting Both Pets and People
Maintaining a healthy environment for both your pets and family members doesn’t have to mean sacrificing safety. By taking proactive steps to prevent mosquito breeding in and around your home, you can help protect your loved ones from dengue fever without compromising your pets’ health.
It’s crucial to stay informed about the risk of dengue, especially if you live in a region where dengue fever is prevalent. For pet owners, this means being mindful of any open water sources and adopting measures to prevent stagnant water from becoming a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
How Do You Identify Dengue Larvae?
Identifying dengue larvae is a crucial step in controlling the spread of the dengue virus because it allows you to recognize potential breeding sites of the Aedes mosquito before they reach adulthood. The larvae of Aedes aegypti, the primary vector for dengue, have specific characteristics that make them distinguishable from other mosquito species, such as Anopheles (which carries malaria).
edes aegypti
To identify dengue-borne larvae, here are the key features to observe:
Siphon Tube: The Aedes mosquito larvae possess a small, slender siphon tube located at the tail end, which they use to breathe at the water’s surface. In contrast, Anopheles larvae lack this siphon tube and rest parallel to the water surface. The presence of the siphon tube in Aedes larvae is one of the easiest ways to distinguish them.
Body Shape and Position: Aedes larvae typically hang at a 45-degree angle from the water surface, with their head facing downward. This angle is distinct compared to Anopheles larvae, which float horizontally at the surface.
Hair on Body Parts: One of the morphological key features to distinguish dengue larvae is the presence of tiny hairs along their body. These hairs give the larvae a more defined, fuzzy appearance. In contrast, non-dengue mosquito larvae may have a smoother look with fewer body hairs.
Body Segmentation: Aedes larvae are segmented, and each segment can have visible bristles or tiny hairs. Their dark-colored body and head are also notable, with a relatively thin and elongated form compared to other mosquito species.
Movement Patterns: Aedes larvae have a unique movement in water. They often jerk or wriggle in quick, sharp motions, unlike the smooth, gliding movements of Anopheles larvae.
By closely observing these characteristics, especially the presence of the siphon tube and the unique movement patterns, you can identify whether the larvae you find are likely dengue-carrying Aedes mosquitoes. Imran Khan, the founding leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has come out in defense of Ali Amin Gandapur, the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), following a series of controversial remarks that have sparked significant backlash. Speaking informally to journalists at Adiala Jail, Khan dismissed criticisms of Gandapur’s comments, claiming that the Chief Minister was simply articulating the sentiments of the nation.
Khan expressed his discontent with party members who had publicly apologized for Gandapur’s remarks, labeling them as “weak cowards” unfit to remain in PTI. His comments reflect a broader frustration with how some within his party have handled the fallout from Gandapur’s statements.
Further escalating his position, Khan declared that he is severing all ties with the establishment. “From today, I am closing the doors to negotiations with the establishment and any other party,” Khan stated, underscoring his determination to reject any further discussions or deals with what he described as deceptive entities. He highlighted that, despite his earlier allowance for six party leaders to negotiate with the establishment, he never personally obstructed anyone from engaging in dialogue.
Khan also made a point about the September 8 rally, asserting that the establishment had provided both the date and the No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the event. Regardless of the permissions or restrictions, PTI remains committed to holding the rally in Lahore on September 21.
In response to allegations from Faisal Vawda regarding involvement in the murder of journalist Arshad Sharif, Khan firmly denied any wrongdoing. He called for a transparent trial to uncover the truth behind the allegations. Khan implied that Vawda’s accusations were politically motivated, stating, “Everyone knows who Faisal Vawda is speaking for.” He added that Vawda had previously sought to arrange a meeting with General Faisal Naseer, further questioning the motives behind the allegations.
Khan expressed his dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs in Pakistan, criticizing the concentration of power and decision-making in the hands of a few. He argued that true democracy and the rule of law are the only solutions to the nation’s problems, emphasizing his lack of knowledge regarding the government’s negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
During his informal chat with journalists, Khan appeared visibly upset by the lack of support from PTI leaders, noting that apart from Barrister Ali Zafar, no other party members had visited him at Adiala Jail.
The controversy surrounding Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has drawn sharp criticism from various quarters. Gandapur’s derogatory remarks about journalists, his language towards his Punjab counterpart Maryam Nawaz, and his attacks on state institutions during a PTI rally in Islamabad have fueled the backlash. At a recent event, Gandapur provocatively stated, “If the founder of PTI is not legally released within one to two weeks, we will have him freed ourselves,” indicating a willingness to defy any obstacles in the rally’s path.
Federal Minister for Information Attaullah Tarar condemned Gandapur’s remarks, labeling them as threats from someone “hollow inside” who had also failed to address rising militancy in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Journalists staged protests in both the Senate and National Assembly in response to Gandapur’s comments, which branded the media as “sellouts” and “brokers.”
In an attempt to mitigate the damage, PTI chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan issued an unconditional apology on behalf of Gandapur. He emphasized respect for the journalist community and clarified that the remarks were directed at a few individuals and were part of a political speech. “We have no intention of escalating tensions,” Gohar said, highlighting that the apology was meant to address the hurt caused and that the party had no desire to resort to unlawful actions.
Despite the apology, journalists continued to demand a direct apology from Gandapur himself. Leader of the Opposition Omar Ayub, accompanied by Barrister Gohar, visited the media gallery to express regret, but the call for a personal apology from Gandapur remained unmet.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has reaffirmed its commitment to continue its nationwide protests, even after a police crackdown at Parliament House late Monday night, which led to the arrest of several PTI leaders. The party’s resolve was declared during a press conference in Peshawar on Tuesday, where PTI leadership expressed defiance in the face of the recent arrests.
Leading the press conference, PTI leader Salman Akram Raja boldly stated, “There should be no misunderstanding – the people have risen.” Accompanied by senior party figures such as Omar Ayub, Asad Qaiser, and Azam Swati, Raja conveyed the decisions made during the party’s core committee meeting held earlier that day. He accused various factions of attempting to manipulate Pakistan’s political and democratic systems but vowed that the PTI would not back down from defending the voice of the people.
Raja also addressed the recent Islamabad rally, defending the speeches made by PTI leaders and emphasizing that the gathering was unlike typical political events. He criticized the government for labeling the speeches as inflammatory, arguing that they represented the sentiments of a frustrated public.
The PTI leaders condemned the arrests of their lawmakers and officials, claiming that these actions were carried out under the pretense of violations of public assembly laws. In Islamabad, several Members of the National Assembly (MNAs) were detained during the crackdown, which the party labeled as an attempt to stifle political dissent.
Tensions between PTI and the media were also apparent during the press conference. Journalists staged a protest at the start, demanding an apology for derogatory remarks made by Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur during a PTI rally in Islamabad. The journalists questioned Gandapur’s absence from the press briefing, despite earlier promises from PTI that he would apologize. Raja explained that Gandapur was attending a session in the assembly and would address the matter later.
Omar Ayub, the opposition leader in the National Assembly, also spoke during the conference. He accused the ruling coalition of hindering PTI’s rally in Islamabad and fabricating accusations against the party. Referring to the arrests made on September 9, Ayub called it a “black day” and claimed that masked individuals had abducted key PTI figures, including MNA Sher Afzal Marwat and lawyer Shoaib Shaheen.
Asad Qaiser, another senior PTI leader, announced that the party would continue its street protests and pursue legal action in court. He called for the immediate release of PTI Chairman Imran Khan and other detained members. Additionally, Qaiser demanded fresh elections, asserting that the current government lacked legitimacy. He also suggested filing contempt of court charges against Islamabad’s police chief and commissioner for creating barriers to PTI’s rally.
The PTI’s core committee had met earlier at the Chief Minister’s House in Peshawar, with Gandapur and other key members present. Sources within the party revealed that PTI plans to launch nationwide protests starting Friday, while its lawmakers will bring up the issue of their leaders’ arrests in the National Assembly.
The PTI remains determined to push forward with its protests, both on the streets and in the courts, as it seeks to challenge the government’s crackdown on its activities.
The police released Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Tuesday. The leader was arrested in a crackdown related to the new Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Bill, 2024. The arrest occurred a day prior, prompting widespread criticism from the PTI leader.
The police announced that Khan had been cleared of charges filed at the Sangjani police station. Speaking to reporters after his release, Khan condemned the police’s actions, alleging that masked officers stormed Parliament House and detained at least ten PTI lawmakers. He described September 9 as “a black day for Pakistan” and vowed to make CCTV footage of the arrests public. Khan called on the National Assembly (NA) speaker to investigate what he sees as an attack on parliamentary democracy.
Khan criticized the arrests and the alleged police violence, questioning the legality of extending rally durations. He argued that PTI leaders endured numerous hardships for the country, democracy, and the people. The police crackdown also involved clashes between PTI workers and law enforcement at Chongi No 26, resulting in several arrests, including those of Sher Afzal Marwat, Zain Qureshi, Sheikh Waqas Akram, Naseem-ur-Rehman, and Zubair Khan.
Police filed cases against PTI leaders under the new law at Noon Village and Sangjani police stations. The First Information Report (FIR) accused PTI workers of attacking police with batons and stones when officers attempted to prevent deviations from the rally route.
In a related development, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) placed senior PTI leader Shoaib Shaheen on judicial remand for violating the new public gathering regulations. During the court session, prosecutor Raja Naveed sought a 15-day physical remand, alleging that PTI workers used police equipment to attack law enforcement. Naveed noted that the rally was permitted from 4 pm to 7 pm, but PTI leadership allegedly provoked and misdirected their supporters.
Defence Attorney Riyasat Ali contested these claims, presenting CCTV footage showing Shaheen’s arrest from his office, which he argued was protected by law. The defence denied allegations of incitement and questioned the basis for the arrest.
Judge Abual Hasnat Muhammad Zulqarnain reserved his decision on Shaheen’s remand request, while other PTI leaders, including Sher Afzal Marwat and Zain Qureshi, received an eight-day physical remand related to the September 8 incident at Sangjani police station.
In parallel, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) reviewed a habeas corpus petition challenging the arrests. IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq questioned the Islamabad Inspector-General of Police, Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi, about the detentions. Rizvi confirmed Shaheen’s presence at the ATC and addressed allegations of police misconduct.
Chief Justice Farooq noted that the case is ongoing and will await the ATC’s ruling on the remand requests. The hearing was adjourned until the next day.
Karachi: Power distribution companies (DISCOs) in Pakistan have been found guilty of overbilling consumers by a staggering Rs8.44 billion to cover up their line losses, according to an official report. The report highlights widespread malpractice among several power companies, leading to an uproar among consumers and calls for accountability.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) launched an inquiry into the matter after receiving complaints of inflated and excessive bills during July and August 2023. The findings revealed that various DISCOs deliberately overcharged millions of consumers to conceal the inefficiencies and losses incurred during electricity distribution.
According to the details provided in the report, the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO) was responsible for overbilling consumers by Rs1.73 billion, while the Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) imposed excess charges amounting to Rs2.39 billion. The report also uncovered over Rs3 billion in overbilling practices by the Lahore and Islamabad Electric Power Supply Companies (LESCO and IESCO), further implicating these major power providers.
The report didn’t stop there. It also exposed the involvement of other DISCOs, including the Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO), Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO), Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO), and Quetta Electric Supply Company (QESCO). These companies were found to have inflated bills in a calculated effort to mask their operational losses and inefficiencies in managing electricity distribution.
NEPRA’s 14-page report, which emerged following hearings and investigations, confirmed that no power distribution company in the country charged consumers correctly. “There is not a single Disco in the country who is charging bills in 100% correct manner,” the regulatory authority noted, pointing to systemic issues within Pakistan’s electricity distribution framework.
The inquiry was sparked by widespread consumer complaints from across the country, alleging “excessive, inflated, and wrong bills” issued during the summer months of 2023. Many consumers reported that the amount billed was far higher than expected, leading to public outrage and demands for immediate investigations.
NEPRA’s hearings revealed further irregularities. In many instances, the amount charged on consumer bills differed from the meter readings provided. Alarmingly, it was found that the snapshots of the meter readings, which are supposed to provide transparent evidence of the actual consumption, were either invisible or deliberately omitted from bills. This raised suspicions of intentional malpractice and neglect in maintaining accurate billing records.
In response to these findings, NEPRA has initiated legal action against several DISCOs, including K-Electric (KE), which supplies power to Karachi, and other major power distribution companies. The regulator has vowed to take firm action to hold those responsible accountable for exploiting consumers and to ensure that such practices are curbed in the future.
The power companies’ overbilling scandal has sparked outrage across Pakistan, with consumers demanding justice and immediate corrective measures. A committee has been constituted to probe the matter further, and there are growing calls for stringent regulatory reforms to prevent such incidents from recurring.
For millions of Pakistani consumers struggling with the high cost of electricity, this revelation of systematic overbilling has come as a significant blow, deepening public distrust in the country’s power sector. NEPRA’s ongoing investigation is expected to shed more light on the issue and offer recommendations for reform.
Karachi: The Pakistani Rupee (PKR) appreciated by 09 paisa against the US Dollar (USD) on Tuesday in the interbank market, as reported by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). The greenback closed at Rs 278.61, compared to the previous day’s closing rate of Rs 278.70, reflecting a marginal improvement in the local currency’s value.
In the open market, however, the exchange rates for the dollar remained slightly higher. According to the Forex Association of Pakistan (FAP), the buying and selling rates of the US dollar were recorded at Rs 278.85 and Rs 280.45, respectively, indicating a slightly weaker performance of the rupee in public trading compared to the interbank market.
The euro also saw a notable decline in value, falling by 70 paisa to close at Rs 307.51, down from the previous day’s rate of Rs 308.21. The continued volatility in the exchange rate of the euro comes amid broader fluctuations in global markets, which have impacted currency values worldwide.
Meanwhile, the Japanese yen experienced a small drop of 01 paisa, closing at Rs 1.93, continuing its steady but minimal decline. On the other hand, the British Pound also saw a decrease of 47 paisa, trading at Rs 364.75, down from Monday’s closing rate of Rs 365.22. The weakening of both the pound and the yen comes as international economic conditions remain uncertain, with factors such as inflation, interest rate changes, and global trade tensions contributing to currency fluctuations.
In contrast to these declines, the Saudi Riyal saw a minor increase in value. The exchange rate for the Riyal rose by 01 paisa, closing at Rs 74.26, reflecting slight strengthening in comparison to the previous day’s closing value. However, the Emirates Dirham decreased by 02 paisa, closing at Rs 75.85. The minimal movements in the rates of these Gulf currencies suggest stability in the region’s exchange dynamics, driven by the steady oil market and regional economic conditions.
The daily currency fluctuations reflect the ongoing complexities in both local and global financial markets. Experts attribute the minor appreciation of the rupee to improved market sentiment and stable forex reserves, although the broader economic challenges facing Pakistan—such as high inflation, external debt, and fluctuating global oil prices—continue to exert pressure on the currency. Analysts suggest that while the rupee’s slight gain against the dollar is encouraging, the country’s overall economic health remains a concern that could influence future currency trends.
Market participants are closely watching the exchange rate movements, especially in light of the government’s efforts to stabilize the economy through fiscal measures and engagements with international financial institutions. These measures are aimed at bolstering Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves and supporting the currency, although many challenges remain.
As the week progresses, currency traders and economists will continue to monitor these shifts, keeping an eye on how global and local economic developments impact the Pakistani Rupee, along with other major currencies like the euro, pound, and yen. For now, the rupee’s modest gain offers a brief reprieve amid the ongoing volatility in currency markets.
Geneva: In a significant legal development, a Swiss court has overturned the acquittal of prominent Islamic scholar and former Oxford University professor Tariq Ramadan on charges of rape. The decision, handed down by the Swiss Court of Appeal, nullifies the earlier verdict that had cleared the scholar of all accusations.
In May 2023, Professor Tariq Ramadan, a Swiss citizen and globally recognized Islamic scholar, was acquitted by a lower court in a rape case due to insufficient evidence. The court had dismissed the charges against him, concluding that the evidence did not support the allegations made by the plaintiff, and ordered Ramadan to be compensated with $167,000 in damages for the wrongful accusation.
The case centers around accusations made by a 58-year-old woman who alleged that Ramadan raped her in a hotel room in Geneva in 2008. Ramadan, who was 62 at the time of the trial, has consistently denied these claims. He has argued that the accusations are baseless and politically motivated, a stance he has maintained throughout the lengthy legal proceedings.
Ramadan’s acquittal earlier this year was seen as a victory by his supporters, who had long argued that the case was a smear campaign against the scholar due to his outspoken views on various religious and political issues. However, the Swiss Court of Appeal’s decision to overturn the acquittal now brings the case back into focus and raises questions about the future of the legal battle.
Legal experts indicate that Professor Ramadan retains the right to appeal the latest ruling to the Swiss Federal Court, which could be his next step in seeking to clear his name. His legal team has yet to make an official statement, but it is expected that Ramadan will continue to fight the charges, given his consistent denials of any wrongdoing.
Ramadan, who has held numerous high-profile academic positions, is the grandson of Hasan al-Banna, the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood, an influential religious and political movement originating in Egypt. Over the years, Ramadan has gained international recognition for his work in Islamic studies, including his role as a professor at St. Anthony’s College, Oxford University.
In 2004, Time magazine named Ramadan one of the 100 most influential people in the world, solidifying his standing as a respected voice in discussions on Islam and its intersection with modern society. However, the recent legal challenges have cast a shadow over his career and public image, leading to debates both within academic circles and among the general public about the fairness and implications of the case.
While the court proceedings are likely to continue, the Swiss legal system will play a pivotal role in determining the final outcome of this controversial case. For now, the overturning of Ramadan’s acquittal has reignited attention on a case that continues to divide opinion both in Switzerland and internationally.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has released several videos on its official YouTube channel, highlighting the arrests of senior party leaders amid the ongoing crackdown by the government. The videos show the illegal arrests of prominent PTI figures, including Barrister Shoaib Shaheen, Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan, and a video statement from PTI Leader Asad Qaiser.
PTI Leader Shoaib Shaheen Arrested from His Office
One of the videos shared on PTI’s YouTube channel reveals the dramatic arrest of senior party leader and lawyer Shoaib Shaheen. In the video, Shaheen can be seen at his office when law enforcement officials arrive and take him into custody. PTI claims the arrest is unlawful, citing Shaheen’s role as a legal advisor for the party in various high-profile cases. The video describes the manner of his arrest as excessive, with PTI accusing authorities of targeting their leadership to suppress the party’s political activities.
PTI officials condemned the arrest, calling it an attack on the judiciary and legal experts who are defending the party’s stance in court. PTI supporters have taken to social media to denounce the government’s actions, arguing that Shaheen’s arrest signals an attempt to silence legal advocates for PTI.
Chairman PTI Barrister Gohar Khan Arrested from Parliament
Another video released by PTI shows the arrest of Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan from within the Parliament premises. According to the video, Khan was detained just after a session had concluded, making his arrest more controversial. PTI labeled this move as a direct violation of legal protocols, as members of Parliament are typically protected from such actions during or immediately after parliamentary sessions.
The video captures the moment law enforcement officers escorted Gohar Khan out of the Parliament building. PTI has expressed outrage, calling this arrest illegal and politically motivated. They argue that the government is using such tactics to demoralize and dismantle PTI’s leadership, particularly those actively involved in the party’s legal defense and political strategy.
Khan’s arrest has sparked widespread criticism from PTI members and supporters, who view this as part of a broader government effort to stifle the opposition. Several PTI leaders issued statements condemning the government’s crackdown on their leadership.
One of the more disturbing videos published by PTI shows the arrest of lawmaker Sher Afzal Khan Marwat. The footage reveals police officers dragging Marwat by his collar and forcibly shoving him as they took him into custody. The rough treatment of Marwat has sparked outrage within PTI, with party officials decrying the use of excessive force and the disrespect shown to an elected representative. The video has drawn widespread condemnation from PTI supporters, who view it as part of a larger effort to intimidate the party’s leadership and disrupt its political activities.
In addition to documenting arrests, PTI uploaded an urgent video statement from party leader Asad Qaiser. In his statement, Qaiser addressed the unfolding situation, calling the arrests politically motivated and illegal. He emphasized that the government’s actions were a direct violation of democratic principles and urged authorities to release the detained leaders immediately. Qaiser warned that the continued crackdown on PTI leaders would only escalate tensions and could lead to further unrest. He reassured party supporters that PTI would continue its struggle for democracy and the rule of law, vowing to stand firm in the face of government pressure.
Qaiser also criticized the government’s attempts to silence political dissent and restrict the right to peaceful assembly. He called on the judiciary to intervene and take action against what he described as “politically charged and unlawful” arrests. Qaiser’s video statement concluded with a message of resilience, urging PTI members and supporters to remain united and peaceful despite the government’s crackdown.
