Imran Khan Accuses NAB of Making False Cases Against wife Bushra Bibi

RAWALPINDI: Imran Khan, the incarcerated founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), issued legal threats to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman and investigation officer (IO) during a court hearing on Friday. Khan pointed at NAB IO Mohsin Haroon and accused him of fabricating cases against his wife, Bushra Bibi.

“My spouse is in prison because of the false cases you created,” Khan said during the hearing of the new Toshakhana reference filed against him and Bushra Bibi. He warned both Haroon and the NAB chairman that he would take legal action once he is released from jail.

On September 2, an accountability court in Rawalpindi extended the judicial remand of Khan and his wife in the new Toshakhana case. This case involves allegations related to a jewelry set gifted to Bushra Bibi by the Saudi crown prince when Khan was prime minister from 2018 to 2022.

Khan, who was ousted from office through a no-confidence vote in 2022, expressed frustration and said he wouldn’t “spare” the NAB officials responsible for the cases against him.

“I will take you both to court over these fabricated cases,” he added.

The NAB investigation officer later informed the media that this was not the first time Khan had made threats, stating that the former premier had threatened them at least four times before.

This kind of threat is not new for Khan. After his removal from office in 2022, he gave a fiery speech targeting Islamabad police officials and Judge Zeba Chaudhry, vowing to “take action” against them for allegedly torturing his party leader Shahbaz Gill.

At the hearing, the NAB prosecution team requested an adjournment, citing the absence of their prosecutor, Umar Majeed. The team mentioned they needed time to review the Supreme Court’s recent decision regarding NAB amendments.

The accountability court accepted the request and adjourned the hearing until September 9.

Internal Party Disputes

After the hearing, Khan spoke to journalists and warned his party members not to plot against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur. Without naming anyone, Khan said some individuals within PTI were undermining Gandapur, but he stood by him.

“This is not the time for differences. If you plot against Ali Amin, don’t expect me to help you secure election tickets in the future,” Khan added.

Bushra Bibi’s Legal Troubles

Bushra Bibi was first arrested in January and placed under house arrest in Bani Gala. Both Khan and Bushra were convicted in the Toshakhana case, which involved the illegal sale of state gifts.

Their sentences were suspended by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in April, but Bushra was transferred to Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail in May after challenging her house arrest in court.

In July, both were acquitted in a separate “iddat” case by a district court. However, Bushra remains in custody due to other ongoing investigations, including the £190 million National Crime Agency (NCA) scandal and the new Toshakhana reference.

COAS General Asim Munir Honors Martyrs on Defence Day at GHQ

RAWALPINDI: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir addressed a special ceremony held at General Headquarters (GHQ) Rawalpindi, commemorating Defence and Martyrs Day. The event honored the sacrifices of fallen heroes who defended Pakistan’s sovereignty during critical times.

During his address, General Asim Munir praised the immense sacrifices made by the martyrs in the fight against terrorism and for safeguarding national security. He highlighted that these sacrifices have played a pivotal role in ensuring stability within the country. “The martyrs’ sacrifices have secured the nation from the menace of terrorism and safeguarded our security,” he said, emphasizing the vital role the armed forces continue to play in maintaining peace.

General Munir also highlighted the unwavering bond between the military and the people of Pakistan. “The relationship between the armed forces and the nation is one of the heart,” he said. “The people of Pakistan have always stood by their army, whether in times of natural disasters, foreign aggression, or in the war against terrorism.” He acknowledged the public’s constant support and reiterated that this unity has been instrumental in overcoming the challenges faced by the country.

The ceremony, which was attended by key dignitaries, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, federal ministers, and other notable figures, paid tribute to the martyrs of the 1965 war. This significant battle, fought between Pakistan and India, began when Indian forces crossed the international border under the cover of darkness on September 6, 1965, attempting to breach Pakistan’s defense lines.

The COAS reminded attendees of the bravery displayed by Pakistani soldiers during the 1965 war, especially in the border areas of Lahore, Sialkot, and Sindh. “The enemy launched a full-scale attack, but the Pakistani forces and the nation stood united to protect the sovereignty of the country,” he stated. The relentless battle continued until both sides accepted a ceasefire brokered by the United Nations (UN) on September 22, 1965.

The Defence and Martyrs Day, celebrated annually on September 6, serves as a reminder of the resilience and dedication of Pakistan’s military forces. It also marks the day when Pakistan thwarted the nefarious designs of a more powerful enemy, showcasing the strength of unity and determination.

The ceremony concluded with prayers for the martyrs and their families, and a renewed pledge from the armed forces to defend Pakistan’s integrity and sovereignty at all costs. The presence of the country’s leadership underscored the significance of the occasion and the collective responsibility to honor those who sacrificed their lives for the nation.

Heirs Forgive Natasha Danish in Karsaz Road Accident

KARACHI: The heirs of the victims involved in the Karsaz Road accident on Friday publicly pardoned Natasha Danish responsible for the tragic mishap. They stated that they had no objection to the suspect’s release on bail. The victims’ families clarified that the incident was not intentional, and their decision to forgive the suspect was made out of compassion and for the sake of peace.

According to an affidavit prepared by the heirs, they confirmed that the matter had been resolved amicably between them and the suspect. “Matters have been settled between us and we have pardoned the suspect. We have forgiven for Allah’s sake, who is the most kind and most merciful,” read the statement. The affidavit is expected to be submitted in court during the next hearing of the bail plea.

Accident Not Deliberate

The heirs emphasized in their statement that the accident, which resulted in the tragic loss of life, was not a premeditated act of murder. They made it clear that the suspect did not intentionally cause the crash and, therefore, should not face the harshest legal penalties.

“We do not see this as an act of intentional harm. The accident was unfortunate, but it was not an act of deliberate violence. Keeping this in mind, we have no objection to the granting of bail to the accused,” said one of the family members during a brief media interaction outside the court.

No Pressure Involved in Forgiveness

The affidavit also directly addressed potential concerns about external pressure or influence on the decision to forgive. The heirs affirmed that they made the decision freely and without any coercion. “We have given this no-objection certificate without any pressure. What we have stated in the affidavit is absolutely correct and based on our own will,” the statement read.

The case, which garnered public attention due to the fatal nature of the accident, has seen various developments. However, this latest turn of events highlights the families’ focus on reconciliation and their belief that the incident was an unfortunate mishap rather than a criminal act.

Legal Implications

With the submission of the no-objection certificate, legal experts believe the court is likely to consider the bail plea favorably. While the pardon by the heirs may not completely absolve the suspect of legal responsibilities, it is expected to weigh heavily in the court’s decision-making process.

According to legal analysts, in cases where the heirs of victims forgive a suspect, the court often takes a lenient approach. However, the final decision rests with the judge presiding over the case. The next hearing is scheduled in the coming week, where the affidavit will be presented as part of the bail plea arguments.

Public Reaction

The public reaction to the news has been mixed. While some have applauded the families for their act of forgiveness, others have questioned whether the legal system should still hold the suspect accountable, regardless of the heirs’ decision. Nonetheless, the heirs’ choice to forgive has undoubtedly changed the course of the legal proceedings.

The court will now determine the fate of the suspect, but for the families, their act of forgiveness is a reflection of their desire for peace and closure.

Heavy Taxation Leads to 25.68% Decline in Cement Dispatches During August 2024

September 5, 2024: Heavy taxation and subsequent rise in cement prices have caused a sharp decline in demand, leading to a 25.68% drop in cement dispatches in August 2024. According to data from the All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association (APCMA), cement dispatches totalled 3.366 million tons in August 2024, compared to 4.528 million tons during the same period last year.

Local cement dispatches by the industry fell by 27.54%, with 2.752 million tons dispatched in August 2024, down from 3.798 million tons in August 2023. Export dispatches also saw a decline of 16%, with volumes falling from 730,755 tons in August 2023 to 613,857 tons in August 2024.

The APCMA report further breaks down the data by region. Cement mills in the northern region dispatched 2.530 million tons in August 2024, marking a 22.20% decline from 3.252 million tons in August 2023. Meanwhile, southern cement mills dispatched 835,245 tons, a 34.54% drop compared to 1.276 million tons dispatched in August 2023.

Domestic dispatches from northern mills were also hit hard, falling by 24.70% to 2.325 million tons in August 2024, down from 3.088 million tons in August 2023. Southern mills saw an even steeper decline in domestic dispatches, which fell by 39.91%, from 709,443 tons in August 2023 to 426,289 tons in August 2024.

Despite the overall decline, exports from northern mills saw an increase of 24.79%, rising from 164,195 tons in August 2023 to 204,901 tons in August 2024. However, southern mills experienced a sharp reduction in exports, with a 27.82% drop to 408,956 tons in August 2024, compared to 566,560 tons in August 2023.

For the first two months of the current fiscal year, total cement dispatches (both domestic and exports) amounted to 6.375 million tons, reflecting a 17.82% decrease compared to 7.758 million tons during the same period last year. Domestic dispatches dropped by 20.73%, reaching 5.214 million tons, while export dispatches saw a slight reduction of 1.65%, with volumes decreasing to 1.161 million tons from 1.181 million tons during the same period last year.

Northern mills dispatched 4.418 million tons of cement domestically in the first two months of the fiscal year, representing an 18.78% reduction compared to 5.440 million tons during the same period in 2023. Exports from northern mills increased by 6.23%, reaching 303,821 tons in July-August 2024, compared to 286,009 tons in the previous year.

Meanwhile, domestic dispatches from southern mills fell by 30.02% during July-August 2024, totaling 795,846 tons, compared to 1.137 million tons in the same period last year. Exports from southern mills also declined by 4.17%, with 857,198 tons dispatched in the first two months of the fiscal year, down from 894,537 tons in the same period last year.

An APCMA spokesperson stated that the cement industry has faced a continuous negative trend for the past 12 months due to heavy taxes and economic uncertainty. The industry also suffered from the impact of monsoon rains on construction activities.

“The current budget has doubled the excise on cement along with sharp increases in other federal and provincial taxes,” the spokesperson said. “The construction sector is suffering, and the decline in domestic offtake is hurting employment for both skilled and unskilled labor. We urge the government to reconsider these taxation measures to help the cement industry recover and ease the pressure on the struggling economy.”

Karachi Braces for Return of Sweltering Heat, PMD

Residents of Karachi should prepare for a return to sweltering heat as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) predicts dry and warmer conditions in the coming weeks. Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfraz announced that Karachi will remain dry until mid-September, with no significant rainfall expected during this period.

Weather Outlook for Karachi

According to the PMD, Karachi will experience partly cloudy skies and humid conditions over the next 24 hours. The city’s temperature recorded a minimum of 27.5°C, with a high expected to range between 32°C and 34°C. Humidity levels are high, currently around 85%, while southwest winds are blowing at 19 kilometers per hour, offering a slight relief from the heat.

Although Karachi may avoid rain for now, other parts of Sindh, such as Tharparkar and Umarkot, may see light rain or drizzle over the next couple of days. As the monsoon season recedes from Sindh by mid-September, warmer weather will dominate, with prolonged dry spells expected to extend into October. The city could also experience heatwaves during this period.

Impact of August’s Torrential Rains

The torrential rains in August, caused by the cyclonic storm ‘Asna,’ significantly impacted Karachi and other parts of Sindh. The storm, which eventually dissipated in the Arabian Sea near Oman, led to days of heavy rainfall that disrupted daily life across the region.

The intense downpour resulted in infrastructure damage in Karachi, with roads suffering from cracks and making commuting challenging for many residents. The situation was severe in other areas of Sindh, including Tharparkar, Mithi, and Islamkot. The Sindh Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported five deaths and two injuries within 24 hours earlier this week.

Casualties and Damages Across Sindh

The PDMA’s report outlined several casualties and damages across Sindh:

  • A woman drowned in Umerkot.
  • Two deaths occurred in Larkana: one due to electrocution and another from a house collapse.
  • Tando Allahyar reported two fatalities: one from an electrical shock and another from a collapsing wall.
  • Two individuals were injured in separate incidents.

These incidents highlight the severe impact of extreme weather events and underscore the need for improved infrastructure and preparedness in vulnerable regions.

Preparing for the Return of Hot Weather

As Karachi braces for higher temperatures, residents are advised to take necessary precautions. The PMD warns that heat levels will escalate in the coming weeks, particularly as the monsoon season ends. October is expected to be particularly dry and hot, with potential heatwaves affecting the city.

The PMD’s forecast indicates a significant shift in Karachi’s weather patterns, moving from the cooler and wetter conditions of August to the warmer and drier days ahead. Residents should prepare for the return of intense heat and stay informed about local weather updates and safety advisories.

For ongoing updates on Karachi’s weather and safety recommendations, residents should follow local reports and alerts from the PMD.

The Chinese envoy reciprocated with warm sentiments, reflecting on the deep-rooted connection between China and Pakistan. The envoy also praised the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), describing it as a symbol of the steadfast relationship between the two countries. The CPEC, a major infrastructure project, continues to serve as a cornerstone of China-Pakistan cooperation.

Tessori Criticizes Political Hurdles to Economic Progress

In a separate statement, Governor Tessori addressed the current political climate in Pakistan, describing it as a significant obstacle to resolving the country’s economic challenges. He pointed out that despite the prime minister’s dedicated efforts, the economic situation remains grim. “Even with relentless efforts, the desired outcomes are elusive,” Tessori said. “While Pakistan strives to overcome economic difficulties, incidents like the recent attacks in Balochistan complicate the situation.”

NASA Confronts Boeing Tensions, Turns to SpaceX for Astronaut Rescue

NASA acknowledged on Wednesday that meetings with Boeing executives regarding the rescue of two astronauts stranded on the International Space Station (ISS) involved “tension,” but refuted claims of shouting matches. The US space agency is turning to SpaceX to bring the astronauts home due to safety issues with Boeing’s Starliner capsule, which has faced thruster malfunctions and helium leaks.

Astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams launched in June with the expectation of a weeklong stay aboard the ISS. However, their return has been delayed until February 2025, when the SpaceX Crew-9 mission is scheduled to return. NASA’s decision to enlist SpaceX for the rescue mission stems from concerns over the safety of Boeing’s Starliner capsule.

Boeing had publicly expressed confidence in its spacecraft, but the absence of Boeing executives from recent NASA press briefings fueled speculation about a possible rift between the two organizations. Reports from the New York Post suggested that meetings between NASA and Boeing had devolved into heated arguments.

Steve Stich, program manager for NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, addressed these claims, emphasizing that while there was tension, the discussions remained professional. “Anytime you’re in a meeting of this magnitude, where critical decisions are being made, there is some tension in the room,” Stich said. He explained that Boeing’s team had confidence in their model predicting thruster degradation, but NASA’s team had concerns about the uncertainties in the model. “I wouldn’t say it was a yelling, screaming kind of meeting,” Stich clarified. “It was a tense technical discussion with both sides intently reviewing the data.”

Despite their extended stay on the ISS, Wilmore and Williams are in good spirits and remain in contact with their families. NASA officials reported that the astronauts are no longer relying on borrowed clothing, having received better-fitting suits during a recent resupply mission.

The Starliner capsule is scheduled to depart the ISS on Friday evening US Eastern Time. Following its undocking, the spacecraft will perform a “breakout burn” using its thrusters to ensure it safely clears the ISS before heading toward Earth. The capsule will then make a parachute and airbag-assisted landing in the western United States early on Saturday morning.

NASA determined that if the Starliner had been crewed, it would have flown closer to the ISS to capture exterior views. However, the agency deemed the risk of collision too high without astronauts aboard to manually pilot the spacecraft if necessary.

This development marks a significant moment in the ongoing partnership between NASA and Boeing, highlighting the challenges and complexities involved in ensuring the safety of astronauts and spacecraft. NASA’s decision to enlist SpaceX for the rescue underscores the agency’s commitment to addressing safety concerns and ensuring the successful return of its astronauts.

Suspect in Karsaz Accident Case Holds Valid British Driving License

A sessions court in Karachi has issued notices to the prosecutor and complainant for Friday, September 6, regarding a post-arrest bail application filed by Natasha Danish. The woman driver involved in Karsaz accident faces charges of recklessly driving.

Natasha Danish’s counsel, Aamir Mansoob Qureshi, submitted the bail application before Additional District and Sessions Judge (East) Shahid Ali Memon. Qureshi argued that his client arrived in Pakistan on August 2 and holds a British driving license valid for six months. He contended that Danish’s medical history, which includes ongoing psychiatric treatment at the Aga Khan Hospital for the past 19 years, impaired her judgment and perception, making it difficult for her to foresee the consequences of her actions.

During the hearing, Judge Memon issued notices to the deputy district public prosecutor (East), the investigating officer, and the complainant, scheduling the next appearance for September 6. Meanwhile, another plea was filed by Danish’s defense before Judicial Magistrate (East) Muhammad Raza Ansari, seeking bail in a separate drug case. The magistrate also issued notices for September 6 to the complainant and the state prosecutor in this matter.

Qureshi argued that his client was falsely implicated in the case under Section 322 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), which pertains to punishment for qatl-bis-sabab (culpable homicide). He asserted that the alleged incident was not due to wilful negligence but rather an unforeseen accident potentially worsened by Danish’s medical condition. He claimed that adding Sections 322 and 320 (punishment for qatl-i-khata by rash or negligent driving) to the FIR was unjustifiable and excessive.

The defense also highlighted what it claimed were procedural flaws in the investigation. Qureshi noted that the investigating officer had collected Danish’s blood and urine samples on August 19, but submitted them for examination with a two-day delay, raising concerns about the chain of custody. He further alleged that the IO had unlawfully obtained a second blood sample after the court had dismissed the application to do so, suggesting an attempt to manipulate evidence.

In support of her legal driving status, Qureshi submitted copies of Danish’s British passport and driving license, asserting that her UK license, valid until 2031, was internationally recognized and legally valid in Pakistan for six months after her arrival. He argued that the relevant PPC sections should not apply in this case.

In a related development, Danish Iqbal, Natasha Danish’s husband, sought interim bail from the sessions court after obtaining protective bail from the Sindh High Court. The court granted him interim bail against a surety bond of Rs100,000 and issued notices for September 6 to the deputy district public prosecutor (East) to confirm or otherwise the interim bail.

The legal proceedings continue as the court evaluates the various bail applications and addresses the broader issues raised by the defense.

Cholera Deaths Surge in 2023, WHO Reports

The UN World Health Organization (WHO) reported a dramatic rise in cholera related deaths for 2023, with the number of fatalities increasing by 71 percent compared to the previous year. According to the global cholera statistics released on Wednesday, over 4,000 people died from the disease last year. This significant rise in deaths corresponds with a 13 percent increase in reported cases.

Cholera, an acute intestinal infection spread through contaminated food and water, is preventable and easily treatable. However, it disproportionately affects communities with limited access to sanitation. The WHO attributes the increase in cholera outbreaks to a combination of factors including conflict, climate change, inadequate access to safe water and sanitation, poverty, underdevelopment, and displacement caused by both emerging conflicts and natural disasters.

The geographical distribution of cholera has shifted notably from 2022 to 2023. The Middle East and Asia experienced a 32 percent decrease in reported cases, while Africa saw a staggering 125 percent increase. This shift highlights the changing patterns of cholera transmission and the growing impact on different regions.

For the first time, multiple countries reported “community deaths,” which occur outside of health facilities. In five of the 13 countries that reported cholera deaths, over a third of fatalities happened in the community. This situation underscores serious gaps in access to treatment and highlights the urgent need to improve response mechanisms.

Among the most affected regions, Afghanistan reported the highest number of cholera cases with 222,249. Other countries, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malawi, Mozambique, and Haiti, also faced significant outbreaks, each exceeding 30,000 cases.

The cholera crisis extends into 2024, with 22 countries currently reporting active outbreaks. Preliminary data suggests that the number of cases reported so far this year is lower than at the same time last year. Despite the challenges posed by limited vaccine supplies, a record 35 million doses of oral cholera vaccines were distributed last year. The one-dose vaccination strategy was employed to reach and protect more individuals given the constraints in vaccine availability.

While vaccination plays a crucial role in controlling cholera outbreaks, the WHO emphasizes that the only long-term solutions to end and prevent cholera are safe drinking water, improved sanitation, and hygiene. The organization is working with urgency to reduce deaths and contain outbreaks globally. This includes strengthening public health surveillance, enhancing case management, and providing essential medical supplies.

In summary, the global cholera crisis has worsened significantly in 2023, reflecting the need for sustained efforts in both immediate response and long-term prevention strategies. The WHO continues to support affected countries in combating this disease and mitigating its impact on vulnerable populations.

Wasim Akram Slams Pakistan Cricket’s ‘Huge Setback’ After Series Loss

Former fast bowler Wasim Akram has slammed Pakistan cricket’s “huge setback” after the series loss, calling it a critical moment for the team. Pakistan cricket plunged into a major crisis following its first-ever Test series defeat against Bangladesh, marking a significant low in the team’s history.

In a dramatic turn of events, Bangladesh secured a historic 2-0 series sweep with a six-wicket victory in the second Test held in Rawalpindi on Tuesday. This result not only highlights Bangladesh’s rise in international cricket but also underscores Pakistan’s ongoing struggles.

The defeat to Bangladesh adds to Pakistan’s already troubling record of ten consecutive winless home Tests. This series loss compounds the team’s recent poor performances, including their failure to advance past the group stages in both the 50-over and T20 World Cups over the past year. The consecutive setbacks have left Pakistan’s cricketing fraternity grappling with a profound crisis of confidence.

Former Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram, a cricketing legend with 104 Test matches and 356 one-day internationals to his name, has voiced his frustration following the team’s dismal performance. Reflecting on the series loss, Akram described it as a “huge setback” and emphasized that Pakistan’s cricket is now at a critical juncture.

Akram expressed deep frustration and embarrassment over the team’s inability to capitalize on advantageous positions during the matches. “For a former player and captain, and a lover of the game, I was left embarrassed at the way they have lost from good positions. I simply don’t get it,” he said. Akram’s comments reflect the sentiment of many who are concerned about the state of Pakistan cricket.

The series loss to Bangladesh, coupled with recent defeats against Afghanistan and the USA in limited-overs formats, highlights a broader issue within Pakistan cricket. The consistent failure to perform well on home soil speaks volumes about the quality and management of the team. The ongoing poor performances have intensified calls for a thorough review and restructuring within the cricketing setup.

Looking ahead, Pakistan’s cricketing landscape faces another challenge as they prepare for their next Test series against England. The two teams are set to play three Test matches starting in October. The series against England will be a crucial test for Pakistan, as they look to rebuild confidence and restore their reputation on the international stage.

In conclusion, Pakistan cricket is at a critical crossroads following its historic Test series defeat to Bangladesh. The series loss has exacerbated existing concerns and highlighted the need for significant changes. With the upcoming series against England on the horizon, the team faces an opportunity to redeem itself and address the pressing issues that have plagued its recent performances.

Hamas Rejects New Ceasefire Proposals for Gaza Conflict

Hamas has firmly opposed the new ceasefire proposals put forward for the Gaza conflict, stating that there is no need for fresh plans. Instead, the group emphasized that pressure should be applied on Israel to agree to the United States plan that Hamas has already accepted.

A spokesperson for Hamas declared that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s refusal to withdraw forces from the Philadelphi Corridor, a border area between Gaza and Egypt, is a deliberate attempt to sabotage the ceasefire agreement. According to the spokesperson, Netanyahu uses negotiations as a tactic to extend Israel’s aggression against Hamas rather than seeking genuine peace. The militant group has made it clear that it will not entertain any new proposals until Israel shows willingness to adhere to the previously accepted U.S.-backed plan.

Hamas has long been critical of Israel’s military presence in key strategic areas, especially around the Philadelphi Corridor, which has been a flashpoint due to its location on the Gaza-Egypt border. Netanyahu’s insistence on maintaining military control over this corridor, according to Hamas, undermines any meaningful progress toward a ceasefire and continues to escalate tensions in the region.

On the other hand, U.S. officials have claimed that the White House is preparing to introduce a new proposal aimed at breaking the deadlock in the ceasefire negotiations. The new plan is expected to address the core issues that have caused delays in reaching an agreement. According to these officials, much of the proposed agreement has already been settled, with negotiators now focused on resolving two significant obstacles that remain.

One of the primary sticking points in the negotiations is the future of the Philadelphi Corridor. Israel insists on maintaining a military presence to prevent the smuggling of weapons and militants between Gaza and Egypt, a position that Hamas strongly opposes. The group views Israel’s control over the area as a violation of Palestinian sovereignty and an obstacle to lasting peace.

Despite the challenges, U.S. officials are optimistic that a new draft of the ceasefire agreement could be ready as early as next week. They believe that a resolution to the ongoing conflict is still possible if both sides demonstrate flexibility and a willingness to compromise on the outstanding issues. However, with Hamas refusing to consider any new proposals and Netanyahu’s government remaining firm on its security demands, the path to peace remains uncertain.

The Gaza conflict has caused immense suffering for civilians on both sides, with international calls for a ceasefire growing louder. The situation remains volatile, as clashes continue to erupt, and humanitarian conditions in Gaza worsen. The international community, including the United Nations and neighboring Arab countries, has repeatedly urged for an immediate ceasefire to prevent further loss of life.

While Hamas has rejected the new proposals, the international community continues to press for a diplomatic solution. The coming days will be crucial as negotiations move forward, and the U.S. tries to bring both parties back to the table.

For now, the Gaza conflict remains unresolved, with both sides sticking to their positions, making a ceasefire seem increasingly difficult to achieve. The international community will be watching closely to see if any breakthrough can be made in the coming weeks.

DG ISPR Vows Action Against All Involved in Faiz Hameed Case

Director General of ISPR, Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, stated that in the Faiz Hameed case, action will be taken against anyone involved, regardless of their rank or position.

During a press conference at GHQ, DG ISPR revealed that 32,173 intelligence-based operations were conducted against terrorists and their facilitators in the past eight months. In the last month alone, 90 militants were killed during these operations, while 193 brave officers and soldiers were martyred in the eight months. The nation pays tribute to their sacrifices.

He added that since the government took power in Afghanistan, the facilitation of terrorists has increased. However, there is no area in Pakistan where terrorists hold control.

DG ISPR also shared that on the nights of August 25 and 26, terrorist activities were carried out in Balochistan. Security forces killed 21 terrorists in the region. He emphasized that these terrorists have no connection to Islam or Balochistan, and warned that those involved in terrorism in Balochistan will be dealt with an iron hand.

In response to a question, he acknowledged the perception of deprivation and state oppression in Balochistan, but clarified that the federal government has allocated 520 billion rupees to the province. Additionally, the provincial government receives 254 billion in royalties, and 80% of the workforce in mining projects are from Balochistan. He said these facts expose the flaws in the false narratives being spread.

Regarding political neutrality, DG ISPR stressed that the Pakistan Army does not oppose any political party or have a political agenda. If anyone in the army promotes a specific political agenda for personal gain, they are held accountable. Speaking on the field general court-martial of Lieutenant General (Retd) Faiz Hameed, he shared that a complaint was received regarding the Top City case through the Ministry of Defense, and the army began court-martial proceedings based on multiple violations of the Army Act by the retired officer.

He concluded by stating that the military’s accountability process is transparent and based on evidence, with the Faiz Hameed case proving that violations for personal and political interests are not tolerated. Those involved will face consequences, regardless of rank or status, with full legal rights afforded to them.

Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif noted that such impartial accountability sets an example for other institutions to follow in holding individuals accountable for misuse of office for personal or political gain.

In response to another question, he mentioned that the military has reduced its defense expenditures and contributed 360 billion rupees in taxes.

Shark Eats Shark: The Unveiling of a Marine Mystery

In a marine mystery reminiscent of a detective novel, researchers from the United States embarked on an investigation into the death of a pregnant porbeagle shark in the waters southwest of Bermuda. The evidence points to a larger shark, armed with its triangular teeth, as the most likely predator.

“This is the first documented case of a porbeagle shark being preyed upon anywhere in the world,” said Brooke Anderson, the study’s lead author and a former graduate student at Arizona State University. She emphasized the significance of the event, noting that the loss of a reproductive female, along with her unborn pups, could have serious implications for the already endangered porbeagle population.

Porbeagle sharks are powerful predators, found in the Atlantic, South Pacific, and Mediterranean. These robust sharks can grow up to 3.7 meters in length and weigh as much as 230 kilograms. They are also long-lived, with some reaching ages of 30 to 65 years. However, their slow reproductive rate, with females maturing at around 13 years old and giving birth to an average of four pups every one or two years, makes them particularly vulnerable to population declines.

Threats like overfishing, bycatch, and habitat loss have already pushed porbeagle sharks to the brink. The species is listed as endangered in the Northwest Atlantic on the IUCN Red List, with populations in the Northeast Atlantic and Mediterranean considered critically endangered.

In their broader research on shark migration, Anderson and her team tagged porbeagle sharks off Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in 2020 and 2022. Each shark was equipped with two satellite tags: a fin-mount satellite transmitter and a pop-off satellite archival tag (PSAT). The fin-mount tag transmitted the shark’s location whenever the fin surfaced, while the PSAT recorded depth and temperature data, storing it until it detached and floated to the surface.

One of the tagged sharks was a pregnant female, measuring 2.2 meters in length. Anderson and her team hoped to gain insights into the habitats crucial for porbeagle mothers and their young. However, the study took an unexpected turn. After 158 days, the PSAT began transmitting from an area off Bermuda, indicating it had detached from the shark.

The transmitted data revealed that the female porbeagle had spent five months swimming at depths between 100 and 200 meters at night and 600 to 800 meters during the day. But on March 24, 2021, the temperature recorded by the PSAT suddenly remained steady at 22°C at depths between 150 and 600 meters for four days, indicating that the shark had been eaten by a larger predator. The PSAT was likely excreted four days later, when it began transmitting again.

Anderson and her team identified two potential predators: the great white shark and the shortfin mako. While both are capable of preying on porbeagles, the great white shark is the more likely culprit, given the data recorded by the PSAT.

This discovery sheds new light on the complex interactions between large marine predators. Anderson noted that while sharks are often seen as apex predators, this event highlights the intricate dynamics within the ocean’s food chain. Continued research into these predator interactions is crucial for understanding their impact on marine ecosystems.

Daily Crime Rate in Karachi Drops, Says Additional IG Sindh at KATI Meeting

Karachi: The daily crime rate in Karachi dropped from 252 to 107 incidents, according to Javed Alam Odho, Additional IG Sindh Police. He announced this during a Monday meeting at the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI). The reduction was achieved through improved policing and the use of CCTV cameras. The Safe City Project, aimed at enhancing security, is nearing completion with government and private sector collaboration. However, Odho emphasized the need for more police personnel to sustain these gains.

Safe City Project to Be Completed Soon

Odho emphasized the importance of technology in maintaining security in modern cities. He highlighted that globally, traditional methods like patrolling and snap checking are being replaced by CCTV surveillance. Following this trend, Karachi’s Safe City Project, which includes upgrading CCTV cameras, is being expedited. The Sindh government is working in consultation with various stakeholders to ensure the project’s swift completion. Currently, around 3,000 cameras have been installed in Karachi with the help of the private sector, and more are on the way.

Addressing Manpower Shortages

Despite the improvements, Odho acknowledged the challenges posed by a shortage of police personnel. He stated that maintaining peace in Karachi with the current force of 15,000 officers is nearly impossible. He highlighted that additional personnel are being integrated under the S4 project, and efforts are being made to address the longstanding issue of manpower shortages. This includes the return of officers assigned to Chinese nationals’ protection, as new recruits are expected to join the force soon.

Community Collaboration and Crime Prevention

Odho praised the business community for its cooperation in crime prevention efforts, particularly through the Neighborhood System, which has been highly effective in areas like Korangi. However, he stressed the need for more resources, including 500 new motorcycles for patrolling, to enhance police efficiency. He also urged the community to support social awareness campaigns, particularly in schools, to instill a sense of civic responsibility and adherence to traffic laws among children.

Challenges Faced by the Business Community

During the event, KATI President Jawed Kandhari addressed the economic challenges facing Karachi’s business community. He noted that the rising cost of electricity and production has led to the closure of over 300 industries, resulting in significant job losses. This economic downturn has contributed to an increase in street crime and other security issues in the city. Kandhari praised the Sindh Police’s efforts, particularly the success of the 15 App, which has greatly enhanced police performance.

Call for Additional Police Resources

Kandhari also highlighted the urgent need for more police resources, noting that the current ratio of one officer per 1,200 residents in Karachi is far from adequate, especially when compared to Lahore’s ratio of one officer per 237 residents. He pointed out that due to this shortage, private security guards are filling the gap, with 55,000 guards currently deployed across the city.

Concerns Over Traffic and Street Crime

The issue of traffic congestion, particularly in Korangi, was another major concern. Kandhari noted that the movement of containers at night is causing severe traffic problems and contributing to the rise in street crime. KATI and local transporters are considering legal action to address this issue. He also pointed out that roadside stalls are becoming hubs of criminal activity, further complicating efforts to maintain law and order.

The event concluded with calls for urgent action to address Karachi’s security challenges. While the city has made significant progress, the need for more resources, better infrastructure, and continued community collaboration remains critical. The swift completion of the Safe City Project and the strengthening of police resources were identified as key priorities in ensuring Karachi’s long-term safety and security.

Children Under Two Should Avoid Screen Time

Sweden has issued a strong message to parents. According to which toddlers should not have any screen exposure. The Swedish Public Health Agency advises that children under the age of two should avoid digital media entirely. This guidance may seem challenging in today’s tech-driven world, but Swedish authorities are firm in their stance.

As children grow, the agency recommends strict limits on screen time. For children aged two to five, screen time should not exceed one hour per day. For children aged six to twelve, the agency suggests a maximum of two hours daily.

Screen Time and Childhood Obesity

Recent research has linked screen time during meals to an increased risk of childhood obesity. Watching TV or using phones at the dinner table may seem harmless, but it can negatively impact children’s health. The Swedish Public Health Agency has extended its caution to children under two, reinforcing the need for digital discipline.

“For too long, smartphones and other screens have been allowed to enter every aspect of our children’s lives,” said Jakob Forssmed, Sweden’s Minister for Social Affairs and Public Health. His statement echoes the agency’s recommendations, emphasizing the importance of controlling screen time in children’s lives.

Teenagers and Screen Time

The agency also offers guidelines for teenagers, advising 13 to 18-year-olds to limit their screen time to two to three hours per day. This recommendation is daunting, given that Swedish teens aged 13 to 16 currently spend an average of six and a half hours a day on screens outside of school hours.

Forssmed warned that excessive screen use among teens leaves little time for physical activity, social interaction, and sleep. He highlighted a “sleep crisis” in Sweden, with more than half of 15-year-olds not getting enough rest.

Protecting Children from Excessive Screen Use

To combat these issues, the health agency advises against using screens before bedtime. They recommend keeping digital devices out of bedrooms at night, citing research that links excessive screen use to poor sleep, depression, and body dissatisfaction.

Sweden’s government is considering more drastic measures. Officials have expressed interest in exploring a ban on smartphones in primary schools. A study published in January found that even one hour of iPad use per day can impact a toddler’s understanding of the world.

Research from Drexel University in Philadelphia revealed that screen exposure starting at age one doubles the risk of unusual sensory behaviors. The risk increases with each additional hour of screen time, underscoring the severity of the issue.

Parental Involvement is Key

Tackling the problem of excessive screen time requires active parental involvement. Parents who engage in their children’s activities can model healthy habits and encourage alternatives to screen use, such as reading, outdoor play, and community involvement.

By setting boundaries and having open discussions about digital media, parents can help their children understand the impact of screen time and develop healthier consumption habits. This approach can promote both mental and physical well-being, creating a healthier environment for children in today’s digital age.

Sweden’s recommendations and initiatives are steps in the right direction, addressing the growing concern of screen time and its effects on children.
