Suspect detained after shooting rampage leaves six dead in Mississippi

A shooting spree in the southern US state of Mississippi on Friday resulted in the deaths of six people. US President Joe Biden responded to the incident by once again calling for tighter gun restrictions.

Police reported that the shooter first killed a person at a store in Arkabutla, a small town in Mississippi, before heading to a nearby house and killing a woman who has since been identified as his ex-wife.

He then moved to another location, where two more men were killed. Finally, a man and a woman were found dead in a neighbouring house, possibly related to the suspect. The suspect was apprehended as he attempted to flee the scene.

The alleged shooter has been identified as 52-year-old Richard Dale Crum, who is currently in custody and charged with first-degree murder.

Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves stated that the shooter acted alone, but his motive is not yet known. The case is being handled by the Tate County Sheriff’s Office and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.

This latest incident occurred only a few days after a man attacked a university campus in Michigan, killing three people. President Biden expressed his exasperation and frustration, reiterating his call for Congress to take action on gun control.

He noted that there have been at least 73 mass shootings in the US in the first 48 days of the year, and argued that gun violence is an epidemic that requires action.

Biden’s call for commonsense gun law reforms has been met with opposition from Republicans, who staunchly defend the constitutional right to bear arms.

They currently have a narrow majority in the House of Representatives, making it difficult to pass any gun control legislation. Last month, two mass shootings occurred within a week, both involving the Asian American community, in California.

According to the Gun Violence Archive database, there were an estimated 44,000 gun-related deaths in the US last year, with about half of them being murder cases, accidents and self-defense, and the other half being suicides.

Twitter to Charge for Text Message-Based 2FA

Twitter has announced that from March 20, only its paid subscribers will be able to use text messages as a two-factor authentication (2FA) method to secure their accounts. Twitter allows 2FA through text message, authentication app, and a security key.

The company has taken this decision to stop “bad actors” from abusing phone-number-based 2FA, as per a recent blog post that the company tweeted.

Elon Musk, owner of Twitter, confirmed that the change in policy was to combat the use of bot accounts by telcos that were pumping 2FA SMS, costing the company $60 million a year in scam SMS.

Twitter Blue, the paid subscription service, will cost $11 per month for both Android and iOS subscribers. The blue check mark, previously free for verified accounts of politicians, famous personalities, journalists, and other public figures, is now available to anyone willing to pay.

Two-factor authentication is meant to make accounts more secure by requiring users to use a second authentication method in addition to a password.

Twitter’s decision to charge users for text message-based 2FA has raised concerns among some users who argue that charging for such a service goes against the spirit of keeping users safe online.

However, Twitter has justified its decision, saying that the revenue generated from its subscription service will help the company offer better security features and fight abuse on its platform.

Twitter has been trying to strengthen its security measures and fight abuse on its platform. In the past, it has faced criticism for not doing enough to protect users’ data and prevent abuse.

The company has also faced scrutiny for its handling of high-profile accounts, including that of former US President Donald Trump.

While two-factor authentication is an essential security feature, it is not foolproof. Cybercriminals have found ways to bypass 2FA, highlighting the need for more sophisticated security measures.

In recent years, there has been a rise in the use of multi-factor authentication, which adds an additional layer of security to the authentication process.

In conclusion, Twitter’s decision to charge users for text message-based 2FA is a significant development in its efforts to fight abuse on its platform.

While it has raised concerns among some users, the move could help Twitter generate revenue that it can use to improve its security features and make its platform safer for all users.

Forced marriages have no place in modern world: Jemima Goldsmith

As the release of Jemima Goldsmith’s romantic-drama film, What’s Love Got To Do With It?, draws near, the screenwriter sat down for an interview with Middle East media to discuss her views on the movie, modern love, and arranged marriages.

In the interview, Jemima shared how romantic comedies have ruined her life and her friends’ lives, as they have set unrealistic expectations of love.

The idea for the film came from Jemima’s experiences in Pakistan, where she saw many successful arranged marriages in her ex-husband Imran Khan’s conservative extended family. However, she clarified that her own marriage to Imran Khan was not arranged.

Reflecting on her friends’ difficulties in finding suitable partners, Jemima would often suggest assisted marriages. She explained that there is a difference between forced and assisted marriages, and the former has no place in the modern world. Assisted marriages, on the other hand, are a form of courtship that help individuals meet the right person.

Jemima refused to discuss the film’s ending, leaving it for viewers to discover on their own.

In conclusion, Jemima’s views on arranged marriages highlight the importance of differentiating between forced and assisted marriages, with the former having no place in modern society.

Militants attack Karachi police headquarters

On February 17, 2023, the Pakistani Taliban launched an attack on the police headquarters in Karachi. After several hours, the security forces were able to regain control of the building and killed all three militants involved in the attack. Unfortunately, the attack resulted in the deaths of three police officers and a civilian.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing small blasts and gunfire before a massive explosion erupted from inside the station. The police headquarters houses some of the city’s most senior officers, and reports suggest that the attackers were wearing police uniforms. According to Deputy Inspector General Irfan Baloch, up to 30 officers may have been present in the building at the time of the attack.

The Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) is primarily active in the mountainous regions near the Afghanistan border. However, they have been carrying out attacks in other parts of the country and have recently intensified their operations against police forces in the north-west of Pakistan. These attacks are part of the TTP’s campaign against the Islamabad government, and they share a common ideology with the Taliban ruling Afghanistan.

The attack on the police headquarters in Karachi is a significant escalation in the TTP’s campaign against the Pakistani government. The use of police uniforms by the attackers highlights the group’s ability to infiltrate security forces, making it even more difficult to prevent future attacks.

The TTP’s increasing activities are a cause for concern for both the Pakistani government and the international community. The group’s extremist ideology and violent tactics pose a threat not only to Pakistan but also to regional stability. The international community must work together to support the Pakistani government’s efforts to combat terrorism and promote stability in the region.

In conclusion, the attack on the police headquarters in Karachi is a sobering reminder of the ongoing threat of terrorism in Pakistan. The TTP’s growing activities underscore the need for continued vigilance and cooperation in combating extremism and promoting stability in the region.

In Chakda Xpress, Anushka plays the role of Jhulan Goswami, one of the most successful women’s cricketers in India. The film follows Jhulan’s journey from her childhood to her rise in the world of cricket and her contribution to the Indian women’s cricket team. Anushka has been actively promoting the film on her social media handles and has shared glimpses of her training sessions and the film’s behind-the-scenes footage.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Indian film industry has seen a significant shift towards digital platforms. Many films have opted for an OTT release, and Chakda Xpress is the latest addition to the list. Produced by Clean Slate Films and directed by Prosit Roy, the film is expected to garner a lot of attention upon its release on Netflix.

The fact that Aditya Chopra had asked Anushka Sharma to keep her debut role in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi a secret from her parents adds a new layer to the already fascinating backstory of the film. The film went on to become a massive commercial success and established Anushka as one of the leading actresses in Bollywood. Now, as she gears up for her comeback with Chakda Xpress, fans are eagerly waiting to see her back on the big screen.

US Concerned about Pakistan’s Debt to China

US State Department Counselor Derek Chollet expressed concerns about debt owed to China by Pakistan and other countries during his visit to Islamabad.

Pakistan, which has been historically close to Washington, has turned to China for support as it grapples with a severe economic crisis, marked by soaring inflation and critically low foreign exchange reserves.

China has provided billions in loans and is Pakistan’s largest single creditor, with about 30% of the country’s total external debt of around $100 billion being held by China and Chinese commercial banks.

During a news conference at the US Embassy in Islamabad, Chollet stated that the US has been very clear about its concerns not only in Pakistan, but also in other parts of the world about Chinese debt, or debt owed to China.

Pakistan to receive loan from IMF to retire debts in FY22

The US State Department Counselor further noted that Washington was in talks with Islamabad about the perils of closer relations with Beijing, but would not ask Pakistan to choose between the United States and China.

The debt owed to China has mainly been accumulated through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which is part of Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative.

However, officials from China and the United States will participate in a multi-country meeting of a new sovereign debt roundtable on Friday. US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and other G7 officials view China, now the world’s largest sovereign creditor, as a key stumbling block in debt-relief efforts.

The G7 and multilateral lending institutions have been pushing for broad efforts to deliver debt relief to heavily indebted nations to help them avoid cuts in social services that could spur social unrest. Pakistan, being one of these nations, has been struggling to repay its debts, with China being its biggest lender.

The US is concerned about the influence China may wield over Pakistan if the country continues to accumulate debt to China.

While relations between Islamabad and Washington had previously turned sour over the war in Afghanistan, there has been a recent thaw, with more high-level visits between the two nations.

Chollet emphasized that the US is working with Pakistan to navigate through the current crisis, but also stressed the perils of accumulating debt owed to China.

The concerns about debt owed to China by Pakistan and other nations highlights the global implications of China’s debt diplomacy, which has been criticized for fostering economic dependence and political influence.

While China’s Belt and Road Initiative has been hailed as a way to promote connectivity and development, concerns have been raised about the potential risks of over-indebtedness and sustainability of projects.

As countries continue to grapple with economic crises, debt relief efforts and debt management strategies will be key to preventing social unrest and preserving global economic stability.

Scientists use 3D printing to develop AR-enabled contact lenses

Researchers at the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI) and Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) have developed a 3D printing method for smart contact lenses that can print functional micro-patterns on non-planar substrates without the need for electricity.

The key to the process is the use of a meniscus, the curved surface of a liquid caused by the adhesive force between the liquid and the solid surface.

The process involves the use of Prussian blue ink, which solidifies through solvent evaporation in the meniscus created between the micronozzle and the substrate. The acidic-ferric-ferricyanide ink meniscus forms on the substrate when the ink-filled micronozzle and substrate make contact.

The precursor ions Fe3+ and Fe(CN)3 interact spontaneously at room temperature, causing the ink (FeFe(CN)6) to crystallize heterogeneously inside the meniscus on the substrate as the solvent evaporates.

To achieve consistent printed patterns, the crystallization of FeFe(CN)6 during the printing process must be carefully regulated. The phenomenon causes edge-enhanced crystallization of ink and enables the technology to create micro-patterns with a resolution of 7.2 microns on curved as well as flat surfaces.

The printing method is particularly useful for contact lenses, as standard electroplating methods require a conductive substrate when voltage is applied. By utilizing the meniscus phenomenon, there are no limitations on the substrate that can be used.

The technology has potential applications in battery and biosensor development, but the primary focus is on using micro-patterns for augmented reality (AR) navigation. Dr. Seol Seung-Kwon of KERI said, “Our achievement is a development of 3D printing technology that can print functional micro-patterns on non-planner substrate that can commercialise advanced smart contact lenses to implement AR. It will greatly contribute to the miniaturisation and versatility of AR devices.”

Dubai’s First Ever 3D Printing Mosque

The development of this 3D printing method is significant as it addresses the challenges associated with printing functional micro-patterns on non-planar substrates. The meniscus phenomenon opens up new possibilities for printing technology, enabling the creation of complex micro-patterns on curved surfaces. This breakthrough could have a significant impact on the future of AR technology, allowing for the miniaturisation and versatility of devices.

The use of ink and solvent evaporation to create functional micro-patterns is a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to other printing methods. The method has the potential to be used in a variety of industries and could lead to new applications in the future.

The development of this technology also highlights the importance of research and development in the field of 3D printing. As the technology continues to evolve, it will become increasingly important to explore new methods and techniques to improve the process and expand its capabilities.

In conclusion, the KERI-UNIST research team’s development of a 3D printing method for smart contact lens micro-patterns is a significant breakthrough in the field of printing technology. The use of the meniscus phenomenon to create functional micro-patterns on non-planar substrates has the potential to revolutionize the way we approach printing technology, enabling the creation of complex patterns on curved surfaces.

The technology’s primary focus is on AR navigation, but it has potential applications in a variety of industries. As 3D printing technology continues to evolve, it is essential that research and development in the field continues to push the boundaries of what is possible.

CCPO Lahore Ghulam Mahmood Dogar reinstated by Supreme Court

The Lahore Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Ghulam Mahmood Dogar has been reinstated by the Supreme Court of Pakistan after it suspended a notification issued by the Punjab interim government to transfer him.

This decision was made following a hearing on a petition against Dogar’s transfer, during which the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) secretary disclosed that the Punjab government made an oral request to transfer Dogar on Jan 23, which was followed by a written application on Jan 24.

The ECP accepted the request on Feb 6. The three-member bench, headed by Justice Ijazul Ahsan and comprising Justice Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi and Justice Muneeb Akhtar, questioned the validity of the oral communication and the implementation of the transfer.

This is not the first time Dogar has been reinstated by the top court. In December last year, he was reinstated as Lahore police chief after being suspended by the federal government in November.

This suspension was due to PTI protesters storming the Punjab Governor’s House following an attack on Imran Khan in Wazirabad.

The Supreme Court’s decision to reinstate Dogar has once again highlighted the issues surrounding the transfer and appointment of police officers in Pakistan. In recent years, there have been numerous cases of politically motivated transfers and appointments of police officers.

These transfers and appointments have often been used to target officers who are seen as not being loyal to the ruling party. This practice not only undermines the independence of the police but also puts the lives of police officers at risk.

The politicization of the police is a major problem in Pakistan, and it has had a significant impact on the effectiveness of the police force.

Police officers who are appointed based on their political affiliations rather than their skills and experience are less likely to perform their duties impartially. This, in turn, makes it difficult for the police to maintain law and order and protect the citizens of the country.

In order to address this issue, there is a need for the depoliticization of the police force. The police should be appointed based on their skills, experience, and merit rather than their political affiliations.

The appointment and transfer of police officers should be made by an independent body rather than being left to the discretion of the ruling party. This would help to ensure that the police force is able to perform its duties impartially and effectively.

In conclusion, the Supreme Court’s decision to reinstate Dogar has once again highlighted the issues surrounding the politicization of the police in Pakistan.

It is essential that steps are taken to address this issue and ensure that the police force is able to perform its duties impartially and effectively. Only then can the citizens of Pakistan be provided with the security and protection they deserve.

BatOneHealth team studying zoonotic spillover prevention

Understanding the causes and transmission of infectious diseases from animals to humans has become a significant area of research in recent years, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic.

A 2021 study found that around 60% to 70% of infectious diseases that affect humans now have their origins in wild animals. Researchers believe that the COVID-19 pandemic was caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus that spread from bats to humans in a process known as “zoonotic spillover.”

To better understand zoonotic spillover, a team of 70 scientists from seven different countries is currently researching how and when bats transfer viruses.

Raina Plowright, a disease ecologist and co-author of a study on the subject published in the journal Nature, created the BatOneHealth project.

The team is conducting important studies on the transmission of bat-to-human viruses, including fieldwork with bats in hotspots worldwide, studying bat immune systems and behaviors, identifying human-infecting viruses, and modeling virus dynamics.

Moreover, the team is investigating the effects of habitat loss and climate change on the likelihood of spillover, as a 2022 study in the journal Nature found that these factors increase the chances of zoonotic spillover.

The team is also exploring habitat restoration techniques to prevent zoonotic spillover. The research is focused on coronaviruses, Nipah, and Hendra viruses, all of which are spread by bats.

The BatOneHealth team comprises scientists from a range of American universities, including Montana State University, Cary Institute, Cornell University, Johns Hopkins, Penn State, Rocky Mountain Lab, Texas Tech, UC Berkeley, UC Los Angeles, and Colorado State.

They are investigating the effect of nutritional stress on viral load, which is the quantity of virus present in a bat’s system, and have established a breeding colony of Jamaican fruit bats to speed up their research.

The team’s ultimate goal is to develop plans to protect people, animals, and ecosystems from emerging infectious diseases caused by zoonotic infections.

By better understanding how viruses from wild animals spread to humans, they hope to anticipate and prevent the next potential pandemic.

Keanu Reeves forbids digital manipulation of his performances

Keanu Reeves, the Hollywood actor, has revealed in an interview with Wired that he has a clause in his movie contracts that prevents studios from making digital alterations to his performances.

Reeves commented on the increasing use of deepfake technology in Hollywood, stating that it is concerning and that individuals lose their agency when such technologies are used.

Actor discussed how the use of deepfakes removes an individual’s point of view and undermines their participation in the editing process, leading to a lack of control over how they are presented in the final product.

The actor expressed concern about the societal and cultural impacts of deepfakes, and how the proliferation of such technology may be used to manipulate and control people in the future.

In addition to his comments on deepfake technology, Reeves also spoke about the cultural and societal impact of AI-generated music and NFT digital art.

While he acknowledged the cool factor of these tools, he raised concerns about the corporatocracy behind them and how they could be used for control and manipulation in the future.

Bail Granted to Sheikh Rashid by IHC

Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, the Awami Muslim League chief and former interior minister, has been granted bail by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) against surety bonds of Rs50,000.

He had sought bail in the case registered against him for making allegations against former president Asif Ali Zardari of plotting to kill former prime minister Imran Khan.

During the hearing, Rashid’s lawyer Salman Akram Raja informed the court that his client was seeking post-arrest bail. Raja explained that the additional sessions judge had rejected the bail plea in the case based on a single allegation against Rashid. He added that the case against his client was registered on the basis of a statement aired on news channels.

When asked about the accusation, Raja stated that the evidence did not indicate that it triggered a fight between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and Pakistan Peoples Party. The court expressed concerns that Rashid might issue such statements again if he were released on bail. The advocate general of Islamabad, Jahangir Jadoon, argued that Rashid was a senior politician and his statements should have been parliamentary.

The government lawyer further alleged that Rashid had abused Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. However, Raja intervened, stating that the government lawyer was referring to a different case. The investigating officer informed the court that they had obtained details of Rashid’s statement from the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA).

The officer said that Rashid had claimed to have received the information from Imran Khan. However, the investigators could not find any evidence of the alleged conspiracy to kill Imran Khan in Rashid’s possession.

The court reserved its verdict in the case, which was later announced. The decision to grant bail to Rashid against surety bonds of Rs50,000 was made, and he will be released from jail on judicial remand.

In a heartwarming gesture of appreciation and loyalty, a family in the Saudi province of Qasim recently threw a grand feast to bid farewell to a Pakistani worker who had spent his entire life with them and was retiring to Pakistan.

Mukful Maqbool, the Pakistani worker, had been sponsored by the family and had worked for them for 45 years. Mukful is the Arabic term for ‘sponsored’.

The Saudi ambassador to Pakistan, Nawaf bin Saeed Ahmed Al-Maliki, shared a video clip of the feast on his Twitter account, with a caption in the Urdu language that read, “A Saudi family in Qasim region is bidding farewell to their Pakistani mukful Maqbool after 45 years of service in a special and meaningful ceremony that reflects the appreciation and loyalty shown by this distinguished family and our beautiful society. Not surprising.”

People from the Indian subcontinent who wish to work and live in Saudi Arabia must have a Saudi citizen sponsor them. This sponsor is called a ‘kafeel’. While in some cases, the sponsored individual is directly employed by the kafeel, in other cases, they work with another employer and pay a portion of their income to the kafeel.

Maqbool had apparently worked directly for the family that sponsored him, spending most of his life with them. The retirement of Maqbool, who is now an old man, is clearly an emotional moment for both him and the family he worked for.

The video clip shared by Ambassador Al-Maliki shows a wedding ceremony-like feast, with an abundance of food, music, and dancing. Maqbool was also presented with a shield in recognition of his services, highlighting the family’s appreciation for his years of hard work and dedication.

This touching story serves as a reminder of the human connections that can form despite cultural and linguistic differences.

It also highlights the importance of valuing and celebrating the contributions of those who have worked tirelessly to support their families and communities.

Explanation of EU ban on petrol cars

The European Parliament has approved a landmark law that effectively bans the sale of new petrol and diesel cars in the European Union from 2035.

The law aims to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles and help combat climate change. The new rules will require car manufacturers to achieve a 100% reduction in CO2 emissions from new cars sold by 2035, which would make it impossible to sell new fossil fuel-powered vehicles in the 27-country bloc.

The law also mandates a 55% reduction in CO2 emissions for new cars sold from 2030, compared to 2021 levels, which is much higher than the existing target of 37.5%.

According to Jan Huitema, the parliament’s lead negotiator on the rules, electric vehicles’ operating costs are already lower than those of vehicles with internal combustion engines. It is crucial to make affordable electric vehicles available to consumers.

The deal was agreed upon by EU countries and lawmakers in October 2021. However, the rules still need to receive formal approval before they can take effect, with the final approval expected in March 2022.

The law also mandates a 100% reduction in CO2 emissions for new vans by 2035 and a 50% reduction by 2030 compared to 2021 levels.

Many carmakers in Europe have announced investments in electrification. Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) CEO Thomas Schaefer announced last year that from 2033, the brand will only produce electric cars in Europe.

Despite the widespread support, the EU law faced opposition from some industry and countries when it was proposed in July 2021.

As a result, the final deal includes some flexibilities, such as small carmakers producing less than 10,000 vehicles per year being able to negotiate weaker targets until 2036.

The car CO2 law is part of a broader package of tougher EU climate policies designed to help the bloc achieve its targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions this decade.

Impact of the New Law

The new law’s main objective is to limit the use of fossil fuels and promote clean energy, which is expected to have a significant impact on the automotive industry.

The ban on petrol and diesel cars will drive the growth of electric vehicles and encourage the development of the necessary charging infrastructure.

The automotive industry, which accounts for about 15% of the EU’s total greenhouse gas emissions, will need to adapt to the new regulations.

Car manufacturers are expected to increase investments in electric vehicles and related technologies, such as batteries and charging infrastructure.

Some experts believe that the new law may accelerate the decline of traditional car manufacturers and the rise of new players in the market.

For example, companies like Tesla, which have been focused on electric vehicle production, are expected to benefit from the new regulations.

Benefits of the New Law

The transition from fossil fuel-powered vehicles to electric vehicles is a significant step towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The new law’s benefits include the following:Reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emissions: The transportation sector is one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases, and the new law aims to reduce these emissions significantly. According to the European Environment Agency, the transport sector accounted for around 27% of the EU's total greenhouse gas emissions in 2019. Positive Impact on Air Quality: The shift to electric vehicles will improve air quality in urban areas, reducing air pollution and its associated health risks. Cost Savings: Electric vehicles' operating costs are lower than those of fossil fuel-powered vehicles, and the new law will encourage carmakers to produce more affordable electric vehicles, which will save consumers money in the long run. Economic Growth: The transition to electric vehicles will lead to the growth of new industries, such as battery production and charging infrastructure, which will create jobs and boost economic growth.

Carmakers’ Response

Many carmakers in Europe have already started investing in electrification, and some have welcomed the new law. For example, Volkswagen’s CEO, Thomas Schaefer, announced last year that the brand would only produce electric cars in Europe from 2033.

Other carmakers, such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz, have also pledged to produce more electric vehicles. BMW plans to have electric vehicles make up 50% of its global sales by 2030, while Mercedes-Benz aims to have electric vehicles make up 50% of its sales by 2025.

However, some carmakers and industry groups have criticized the new law, arguing that the targets are too aggressive and will hurt their ability to compete with non-EU carmakers.

Impact on Consumers

The new law’s impact on consumers is likely to be mixed. The availability of electric vehicles is expected to increase significantly, making it easier for consumers to switch to cleaner modes of transportation.

The decrease in the cost of electric vehicles due to increased production is also expected to make them more affordable.

However, the new law’s implementation may also result in a reduction in the availability of petrol and diesel cars, which may cause their prices to increase. This could make it more difficult for consumers who cannot afford electric vehicles to purchase new cars.

The new law is also expected to increase the demand for charging infrastructure, which could lead to a rise in the cost of electricity. However, the cost of operating an electric vehicle is expected to be lower than that of a traditional vehicle in the long run, primarily due to lower fuel costs.

The new law represents a significant step towards reducing the use of fossil fuels and promoting clean energy.

IK to Appear Before LHC for Protective Bail in ECP Case

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan is expected to appear before the Lahore High Court (LHC) today to seek protective bail in a case registered against him over protests outside the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) office.

This comes after an anti-terrorism court in Islamabad cancelled his bail when he failed to appear before it on Wednesday and sought another exemption on medical grounds.

At yesterday’s hearing, LHC’s Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh had remarked that Imran Khan would only be granted protective bail if he appears before the court in person.

The ousted prime minister had been on bail on medical grounds after he was injured in an assassination attempt in Wazirabad during a rally on November 3.

The case against Imran Khan was registered in October last year after the Toshakhana verdict was announced by the ECP, which sparked countrywide protests.

Not only did the ATC summon the PTI chief, but a banking court also asked Khan to appear before it in the prohibited funding case.

However, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) ordered the banking court to hold its verdict till February 22, which was a relief for the ex-prime minister.

Nonetheless, the LHC emphasized that an in-person appearance was the first rule in a protective bail case, and his counsel must ensure that he is present today.

During yesterday’s hearing, Advocate Azhar Siddique submitted his power of attorney on behalf of Imran Khan, and he was directed to appear before the court in person today.

However, the legal team argued that a meeting with Imran Khan’s doctors was ongoing, and the party had concerns over his security, requesting additional time.

Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh asked the counsel how much time they needed, and they said they would try their best to bring Imran Khan in two hours. The court adjourned the hearing until 12:30 pm.

The LHC promised to ensure Imran Khan’s security and told his counsel that the PTI chief’s in-person appearance was crucial for the granting of protective bail.

Justice Sheikh said, “Without his in-person appearance, I will not grant bail, whether you bring him on a stretcher or in an ambulance.”

In conclusion, Imran Khan is expected to appear before the Lahore High Court for protective bail in a case registered against him over protests outside the ECP office.

The court emphasized that his in-person appearance was vital for the granting of protective bail, and the legal team must ensure that he is present today.

Multan Sultans thrash Quetta Gladiators in one-sided game

Multan Sultans put on a dominant performance against Quetta Gladiators, winning by nine wickets in a one-sided match at the Multan Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.

After winning the toss, Multan Sultans put Quetta Gladiators to bat first. It was Ihsanullah who stole the show with his bowling brilliance, ending up with a career-best figure of 5-12, including a maiden over, to bowl out Quetta Gladiators for a below-par total of 110.

The only success the visitors got in the game was through Nuwan Thushara, who got the wicket of Shan Masood.

In reply to the 111-run target, Multan Sultans were stunning with the bat, led by South Africa’s Rilee Rossouw, who hammered an unbeaten 78 off 42 deliveries.

He hit nine boundaries and three maximums to guide his team to an easy victory. Sultans captain Mohammad Rizwan scored 28 not out, while being a mere spectator at the non-striker’s end.

The former Gladiator men finished the game in style by hitting Mohammad Nawaz for two maximums on successive deliveries.

Ihsanullah was well-supported by pacers Abass Afridi and Sameen Gul, who claimed two wickets each from the home side.

Gladiators suffered the first blow in the shape of Martin Guptill’s wicket in the second over, followed by the wicket of Abdul Bangalzai (1). After that, it was all Ihsanullah’s show.

He bowled Gladiators captain Sarfaraz Ahmed (2), then removed Jason Roy (27) and Iftikhar Ahmed (golden duck) on successive deliveries. At that stage, Gladiators were reduced to 46/5.

Mohammad Nawaz and Umar Akmal tried to stable the innings but were stopped in their tracks by Usama Mir. He removed Nawaz (14). Akmal (11) was the fourth victim of Ihsanullah, who completed the fifer by castling Naseem Shah (1).

Mohammad Hasain played a good hand of 22, supported by all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez, who departed after scoring 18.

Kudos to Multan Sultans for bouncing back after losing the opening match of the Pakistan Super League to Islamabad United.

They were forced to make a change in their XI after Shahnawaz Dahani fractured his index finger and was ruled out from the tournament.

He was replaced by Abbas Afridi, who proved his worth by taking two wickets. Meanwhile, Rilee Rossouw was also back in the side in place of Usman Khan.

Quetta Gladiators, on the other hand, are off to a bad start, suffering a heavy defeat in their opening match of the tournament. They were outplayed by the home side in all departments of the game, failing to put up a competitive total and then failing to defend it.

They will need to regroup and come back stronger in their next match if they hope to turn things around.

Elon Musk hire Dog ‘Floki’ as CEO twitter

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has announced that he has appointed his pet dog ‘Floki’ as the new CEO of Twitter.

Musk made the announcement on Wednesday via a tweet, which included a picture of Floki sitting on the CEO’s chair with the caption “The new CEO of Twitter is amazing”.

Musk went on to describe Floki as “great with numbers” and possessing a keen sense of style. He also commented that the dog was a better CEO than his predecessor, whose name he did not mention.

The tweet sparked a variety of reactions from Twitter users, with some expressing amusement and others questioning the wisdom of appointing an animal to such an important position.

One user asked if Twitter would be adding the option of reporting animal abuse under the new leadership.

Musk had previously expressed his desire to step down as CEO of Twitter, but had struggled to find a suitable replacement. In response to a poll he ran in December 2022, where 57.5% of respondents called for his resignation, Musk had stated that he would only continue to run the software and servers teams until he found “someone foolish enough” to take over.

However, Musk had also expressed doubts about finding a suitable successor, stating that “no one wants a job who can actually keep Twitter alive”.

His decision to appoint his pet dog as CEO appears to be a tongue-in-cheek response to this predicament.

While it remains to be seen how Floki will perform in his new role, Musk’s announcement has generated significant attention on social media.

Some commentators have speculated that the move may be part of a larger strategy by Musk to generate buzz and increase engagement with the platform.

Regardless of the motivations behind the appointment, it is clear that Floki has some big paws to fill as CEO of one of the world’s largest social media platforms. Only time will tell if he is up to the task
