Myanmar coup: the largest protests to take place since 2007

Myanmar has witnessed the largest protests in more than ten years, as thousands of people pretested against the military coup.
According to BBC News, people have demanded the release, Aung San Suu Kyi, of an elected leader. However, the military silent about the increasing opposition to Monday’s coup.

The throng of protesters chanted “We don’t want military dictatorship. We want democracy,”  in the main city, Yangon, as they rallied in more than a dozen different cities.

The demonstrations in Yangon on Sunday were the largest since the so-called Saffron Revolt of 2007 when thousands of monks in the country stood up against the military regime.

After a day-long blackout, internet access has now been restored.

The army held power after claiming, without evidence, declaring that the November election was fraudulent.

The rulers had proclaimed a state of emergency for a year and were hunkered down in the capital, Nay Pyi Daw.

Many leaders have been under house arrest from National League for Democracy Party (NLD) leaders such as Ms Suu Kyi other leaders, and President Win Myint.

People, in Yangon, donned red shirts, the colour of Ms Suu Kyi’s party, and held red balloons, while cars. The three-finger salute was flashed by many, a gesture of rebellion toward authoritarianism in the country.

The internet shutdown imposed by the military failed to curb the protesters. “Respect our vote,” read one banner, in reference to the NLD’s landslide win in November.

Throngs of people surged in the city centre towards the Sule Pagoda whereas police cars and policemen were deployed outside Yangon University in police uniforms.

However, there are no reports of violence.

“First, we don’t want to go back to military rule. We don’t want to live in fear. Secondly, we want Mother Su to be freed from being under detention unjustly,” a protester told the BBC. “And third, we want to root out the system where soldiers take civilian administrative positions.”

In Nay Pyi Daw and Mandalay, the country’s second-largest city, smaller protests were also held. There have been rumours of shots being fired in Mawlamine, but no-one was injured.

Is the video real?

Yes, according to BBC, they reached out to Ms Khing, the physical fitness instructor to which she later confirmed that the video is real. There was some skepticism at first, considering the exceptional situations under which the video was shot.

According to a statement on a military-owned television station, the army said it had carried out the detentions in reaction to ‘poll fraud,’ handing power to military leader Min Aung Hlaing and enforcing a state of emergency for one year.

Google union in turmoil after global alliance announcement

Following Monday’s declaration of an international coalition, the Alphabet Workers Union (AWU) is in chaos. Alpha Global, the coalition, was billed as a worker-led project, but US union members admit they didn’t hear about it until an exclusive was released by The Verge.

The piece contained a quotation from AWU executive council member Parul Koul’s press release, which she claims she has not written.

The news was not well received by bewildered union members who were expecting the Alphabet Workers Union to run democratically.

To union officials who want the Alphabet Staff Union to run democratically, the news was an unexpected disappointment. Several sources now inform that some organizers of the AWU are considering pressing the party to disaffiliate with the Communications Workers of America (CWA), a national union representing telecommunication and media workers. AWU has formed a committee to investigate the CWA’s role.

AWU executive council member, In a statement, Auni Ahsan informed that “We want to honor the concerns that have been raised, but our primary focus as a union isn’t affiliation or disaffiliation.”

As the ‘minority union’, it isn’t recognized by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) and can’t require Alphabet or its subsidiaries like Google to negotiate a contract for its members.

Its power comes in part from uniting Alphabet workers and swelling its membership base to mount public pressure campaigns.

The union has expanded from 230 members to more than 800 since the union went public on January 4th. But some members expressed fears that the Communications Workers of America were pressuring the union to go public early.

They even claim that without briefing Google staff first, the CWA has a tradition of publishing major announcements. The New York Times was told by Amr Gaber, a Google developer who helped coordinate the 2018 walkout, that the union had been more concerned with taking territory than responding to organisers’ needs.

The UAE’s nationality is now attainable for foreigners

The United Arab Emirates has declared that Emirati citizenship will now be legally attainable for foreigners, with the Gulf State being a big first.

For a country whose economy depends heavily on expatriates, for whom citizenship is usually dependent on their work permits, the shift is a drastic change of direction.

However, foreigners will not qualify for citizenship; they must be named by UAE royals or authorities, and the Cabinet of the country may have the final say.

The declaration, which has no precedent in the Gulf region, illustrates how the tiny Arab sheikhdom strives to maintain top talent when tens of thousands of immigrants were forced to flee last year by the coronavirus pandemic. Almost 90% of the nearly 10 million residents of the UAE are foreign nationals.

It has now agreed, however, that amount, and extend its timeline of electrifying the vehicles in 2025.

With US$44bn Ford overshadowed by Elon’s US$805bn behemoths, Tesla has excelled Ford to become the world’s ‘biggest’ motor company which reflects that this is shaping up to be a battle for the future of the vehicle market.

The Ford Motor Company has chosen not to follow plans to begin an EV joint venture with Zotye Automobile of China, although it agreed last week to start producing its all-electric Mustang Mach-E model through a joint venture with Chongqing Changan Automobile.
