Death Toll in Gaza Conflict Reaches Over 42,000

The ongoing war in Gaza has claimed the lives of at least 42,344 Palestinians, according to the Health Ministry. The conflict has left 99,013 others injured. In the past 24 hours alone, Israeli attacks resulted in the deaths of at least 55 individuals.

Officials estimate that the actual death toll may be much higher, with thousands of bodies believed to be buried beneath the rubble of destroyed buildings. A recent drone strike by a Lebanese militant group targeted an Israeli army base in northern Israel, killing four soldiers and injuring dozens more.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged the “painful” losses suffered by his military but emphasized that operations against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon would intensify. In the latest strikes, over 40 Palestinians were reported killed in various locations across the Gaza Strip. Israeli forces have escalated their assault around Jabalia, the largest refugee camp in Gaza.

Palestinian health officials reported that at least 11 people died from Israeli fire near al-Faluja in Jabalia. Additionally, 10 others were killed in Bani Suheila in eastern Khan Younis when an Israeli missile struck a residential house.

12 Individuals Missing

Earlier on Tuesday, an Israeli airstrike destroyed three houses in the Sabra suburb of northern Gaza City. Two bodies have been recovered, and search efforts continue for 12 individuals believed to be missing under the rubble.

The violence also spread to the Nuseirat camp in central Gaza, where five people were killed in an Israeli strike. In the occupied West Bank, Israeli troops killed one armed individual and arrested three others following a clash. An army statement confirmed the killing of another Palestinian fighter during a close-quarters firefight in Qabatiya, south of Jenin.

The Israeli military conducted operations across the occupied West Bank, arresting approximately 20 individuals and seizing weapons and ammunition. The Palestinian Health Ministry reported two additional deaths during a large-scale incursion in Jenin. Reports indicated that seven members of the al-Sayed family were killed, with their bodies buried in their family home in the al-Faluja area of the Jabalia refugee camp.

400,000 Residents Remain Trapped

In northern Gaza, about 400,000 residents remain trapped under an Israeli military siege that began 11 days ago. Reports indicate that Israel faces a shortage of air defense missiles, prompting the government to seek assistance from the United States. According to the Financial Times, the Israeli military is relying on the US to replenish its defensive capabilities.

THAAD Anti-missile System

The US recently announced the deployment of the THAAD anti-missile system to Israel amid escalating tensions with Iran. Earlier this month, Iran launched a series of missiles at Israel in retaliation for targeted assassinations of Hamas and Hezbollah leaders, as well as an Iranian general.

Following these events, Israel threatened to respond militarily to Iran, a move analysts warn could further escalate the conflict. Netanyahu’s office stated, “We listen to the opinions of the United States, but we will make our final decisions based on our national interests.”

Israel has vowed to retaliate against the Iranian missile attack, with Defence Minister Gallant asserting that the response would be “deadly, precise, and surprising.” Meanwhile, a recent airstrike in southern Gaza killed at least 10 family members while they were asleep, further adding to the rising death toll.

The situation remains dire as violence continues to sweep through the war-torn region, with dozens of Palestinians reported killed in early strikes on Tuesday.

Pakistan’s Fielding Woes End World Cup Dreams and Knock Out India

Pakistan dropped eight crucial catches in their must-win Women’s T20 World Cup Group A match against New Zealand in Dubai on Monday. New Zealand capitalized on Pakistan’s poor fielding to secure a 54-run win, booking their spot in the semi-finals for the first time since 2016.

This defeat not only ended Pakistan’s slim hopes of advancing but also knocked India out of the tournament. For India to qualify, Pakistan needed to beat New Zealand, but Pakistan’s fielding blunders became the deciding factor.

On a tough day for run-scoring, Pakistan’s fielders faltered, dropping catches in key moments. Missed chances occurred in the 5th (4.2), 6th (5.2), 8th (7.3), 16th (15.5), and 18th (17.2) overs. The 20th over alone saw three more drops (19.1, 19.3, and 19.5), sealing their fate.

Former India fast bowler Munaf Patel expressed his shock at Pakistan’s fielding performance. He took to X (formerly Twitter) and commented, “You know how many catches were dropped by #Pakistan in today’s match,” alongside an image of a Pakistan fielder dropping a catch.

This loss has left Pakistan and India disappointed, with New Zealand moving forward to the next stage of the tournament.

FBR Confirms No Extension for Income Tax Returns Filing Deadline

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has denied any possibility of any further extension for the income tax returns filing deadline. FBR spokesperson Bakhtiar Muhammad confirmed that the last date for filing is October 14, 2024, and no further extensions will be granted.

To accommodate taxpayers, FBR offices and field formations will remain operational until midnight tonight. This extension aims to ensure that all individuals can file their returns on time.

As of September 30, 2024, approximately 3.66 million taxpayers had filed their tax returns. This number reflects the FBR’s ongoing efforts to encourage timely compliance among taxpayers.

Previously, the FBR had extended the deadline for filing income tax returns for the fiscal year 2024. This decision came after numerous requests from trade associations and tax bar associations. The extension granted was a response to technical issues that had caused the FBR’s IT system to become overloaded.

Read: US Deploys THAAD Missile Defence System to Israel After Iranian Missile Attack

Bakhtiar Muhammad clarified that the technical problems have been resolved. Therefore, no further extensions will be allowed beyond the October 14 deadline. He urged taxpayers not to wait until the last minute and to file their returns promptly.

The government’s focus on timely tax filing aims to foster a culture of tax compliance. This culture is essential for Pakistan’s economic stability and growth. By encouraging timely submissions, the FBR hopes to enhance revenue generation and improve public services.

The Consequences for Non-Filers

In addition to the deadline announcement, the FBR spokesperson highlighted the consequences for non-filers. After the deadline, SIM cards of individuals who have not filed their returns will be blocked. These individuals will also face restrictions on purchasing vehicles or plots.

During a recent meeting, the Federal Board of Revenue chairman received updates on tax collection for September. The meeting revealed that Rs 1,106 billion was collected through income tax returns, surpassing the target of Rs 1,098 billion. This achievement underscores the importance of compliance and the effectiveness of the FBR’s initiatives.

The FBR’s efforts to promote timely tax filings align with broader economic goals. By increasing tax compliance, the government aims to strengthen its financial position and fund essential public services. This initiative is crucial for maintaining economic stability and fostering growth in the country.

Taxpayers are encouraged to take advantage of the extended hours offered by the FBR today. Meeting the filing deadline is imperative for avoiding penalties and ensuring compliance with tax regulations.

The FBR emphasizes the importance of timely filing and compliance. The deadline for filing income tax returns is today, October 14, 2024, and no further extensions will be granted. Taxpayers must act swiftly to avoid negative consequences and contribute to the country’s economic development.

Pakistan Excludes Babar, Shaheen, and Naseem for Crucial England Tests

Pakistan has excluded Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, and Naseem Shah from their squad for the remainder of the Test series against England. This decision follows an embarrassing innings defeat in the first Test. It marks the first major move by the revamped team management, made just minutes after the loss in Multan.

England’s Ben Stokes Returns for Second Test

Both Pakistan and England have announced their playing elevens for the second Test, which starts on October 15 in Multan. England’s captain Ben Stokes, who missed the first Test due to injury, returns to the side. During a press conference, Stokes was asked about Pakistan’s decision to leave out three of their top players. He responded, “That’s Pakistan cricket’s issue, nothing to do with me.”

The exclusion of Babar, Shaheen, and Naseem has caused significant debate in the cricketing world. Pakistan’s assistant coach, Azhar Mahmood, addressed the media to explain that the trio has been “rested” rather than “dropped.” According to Mahmood, the team management wants to ensure these key players remain fit for upcoming white-ball matches. He emphasized Babar Azam’s value, stating, “Babar is our No. 1 player in terms of technique and ability.”

Read: Fakhar Zaman Criticizes Babar Azam’s Exclusion, PCB Issues Show-Cause Notice

Mahmood explained that the team faces a busy schedule ahead, with tours to Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. He added, “We need to take advantage of our conditions and make sure our players are rested for the upcoming challenges. We have non-stop cricket for the next six months.”

Skepticism Surrounds Pakistan’s Decision

However, skepticism surrounds Mahmood’s explanation. Many fans and experts question the decision to rest these crucial players during such an important Test series. Pakistan has not won a Test series at home since early 2021, and a defeat in the second Test would mean another home series loss to England. Additionally, Pakistan made history in the first Test by becoming the first team to lose by an innings despite scoring over 500 runs in their first innings.

Critics argue that the upcoming white-ball matches are not as important as winning the current series against England at home. The absence of Babar Azam, one of the world’s best batsmen, along with two of Pakistan’s top fast bowlers, could weaken the team significantly.

The pressure is mounting on the Pakistan cricket team. They are coming off a string of poor performances, including losing a Test series at home to Bangladesh. Now, they face the possibility of a second consecutive home series defeat to England.

The second Test will be crucial for Pakistan as they look to bounce back from the heavy defeat in Multan. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if the team can recover without their star players or if the decision to rest them will backfire.

PTI Calls Off D-Chowk Protest After Govt Assurance on Khan’s Health

The PTI late Monday night called off its planned D-Chowk protest scheduled for October 15, on the eve of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Islamabad. PTI Chairman Barrister Ali Gohar has said that Imran’s health was the top priority.

The federal government has deployed over 10,000 police and paramilitary personnel for the security of around 900 delegates attending the 23rd SCO summit on October 15 and 16. The summit will see participation from Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Iranian First Vice President Reza Aref, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and leaders from other member states. Security agencies are determined to prevent any disruptions during this high-profile event.

In addition to these measures, army troops have been deployed under Article 245 of the Constitution to bolster security from October 5 to 17. The federal government also declared a three-day public holiday in the capital from October 14 to ensure the safety of the summit’s attendees.

Demand for Access to Imran Khan

Last week, PTI issued a nationwide call urging its leaders and workers to gather in Islamabad on October 15. The party demanded immediate access to Imran Khan, its founder, who is currently imprisoned in Adiala Jail. The government had previously banned all visits to prisoners at Adiala Jail until October 18 due to security concerns related to the summit.

Despite facing significant criticism from the ruling coalition and business groups, PTI on Sunday reiterated its call for protest, instructing its office-bearers to reach Islamabad at all costs if the government failed to grant doctors and lawyers access to Imran Khan.

However, late on Monday night, PTI posted a message on X, stating: “The federal government has officially contacted us and assured us that doctors will visit Adiala Jail tomorrow morning to attend to Imran Khan. Based on this guarantee, the PTI leadership has decided to postpone tomorrow’s peaceful protest in Islamabad.”

Khan’s Health

PTI Chairman Barrister Ali Gohar emphasized that Imran Khan’s health was the top priority for the party. He noted growing concerns since there had been no meeting with the party founder after October 3. This prompted the announcement of the protest, with a request sent to Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi for a family member, lawyer, or doctor to visit Imran Khan to address health concerns.

Gohar added that the party’s allies had also requested the postponement of the protest. “The interior minister has assured us that a doctor will definitely meet Imran tomorrow,” he said. After receiving the assurance, Gohar sought time to consult with PTI’s apex and political committees.

Following the consultations, the committees unanimously accepted the government’s offer, leading to the postponement of the protest.

Fakhar Zaman Criticizes Babar Azam’s Exclusion, PCB Issues Show-Cause Notice

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) issued a show-cause notice to Fakhar Zaman. The notice followed Zaman’s public remarks on X (formerly Twitter) about the selection committee’s decision to drop Babar Azam for the second and third Tests against England.

Zaman, a left-handed top-order batter, expressed concern over the decision to exclude Pakistan’s captain. He called it “concerning” and said it could send a “deeply negative message” to the team. Zaman urged the PCB to reverse their decision.

Post Appeared for 5 Minutes

His post appeared just five minutes before Pakistan’s 16-member squad for the remaining two Tests against England was announced. As expected, the squad did not include Azam. Additionally, star bowlers Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah were also absent from the lineup, a revelation earlier made by Cricbuzz.

In his message, Zaman highlighted how India handled Virat Kohli’s slump in form. He noted that despite Kohli’s struggles from 2020 to 2023, India never benched him. “India didn’t bench Virat Kohli during his rough stretch,” Zaman posted, referencing Kohli’s low averages during those years.

He further argued that Pakistan should avoid pressing the panic button and instead focus on supporting key players like Babar Azam. “If we are considering sidelining our premier batsman, arguably the best Pakistan has ever produced, it could send a deeply negative message across the team,” Zaman wrote.

Sparked Debate

The PCB has given Zaman seven days to explain his position. His remarks have sparked debate within the cricketing circles.

This incident could strain the relationship between Zaman and the PCB even further. Last month, Zaman voiced his frustrations directly to PCB chair Mohsin Naqvi. His complaints were reportedly against Usman Wahla, the PCB’s director of international cricket operations.

According to reports, Zaman felt Wahla delayed the process of granting the No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to him and other players for T20 leagues. This delay affected their ability to participate in international cricket leagues around the world.

Zaman’s outspoken nature has already brought him into conflict with the board. His latest comments on the selection committee’s decision might deepen the rift. It remains to be seen how the PCB will handle this situation and whether Zaman’s explanation will calm the waters or intensify the tension.

The controversy surrounding Babar Azam’s exclusion has now escalated with Zaman’s remarks. With the England series approaching, all eyes are on the PCB and how they will address these internal conflicts. The cricketing world watches closely as Pakistan grapples with issues that extend beyond just performance on the field.

What is Hair Porosity? How to Test low, medium, and high?

Hair porosity is all about how well your hair absorbs and retains moisture. It’s basically how open or closed your hair cuticles are. Think of hair cuticles as tiny scales on the surface of your hair that decide how much moisture can go in and out of the hair shaft. The way your cuticles behave will determine whether your hair is hydrated or dry.

Hair porosity comes in three categories: low, medium, and high. Each type impacts how you should care for your hair.

  • Low porosity hair has tightly closed cuticles. While this helps retain moisture, it also makes it hard for moisture to get inside in the first place.
  • Medium porosity hair has more flexible cuticles, allowing moisture to enter easily but also retain it well.
  • High porosity hair has very open cuticles. This allows moisture to get in easily, but it can leave just as quickly.

Factors like genetics, environment, and hair damage can affect your hair’s porosity, making it more open or closed.

What Affects Hair Porosity?

Your genes play a huge role in determining your hair’s porosity. If you have curly hair, you probably have higher porosity hair. Curly hair tends to be naturally drier, and its structure makes it harder for oils to travel down the strands, which can result in higher porosity.

Not sure what curl type you have? You can take a curl quiz to help you identify it. This can also give you a clue about your hair’s porosity.

While genetics matter, your hair porosity can change. Heat styling, dyeing, pollution, and sun exposure can all damage your hair, making the cuticles lift and increasing porosity. The more damaged your hair, the higher its porosity. If you use heat tools, bleach, or spend a lot of time in the sun, your hair may need extra protein and moisture to repair itself.

The 5 Levels of Hair Porosity

Hair porosity can be broken down into five levels:
  • Grade 1 Porosity: Virgin hair with no damage. It’s hard for moisture to penetrate this hair type because the cuticles are tightly closed.
  • Grade 2 Porosity: Virgin hair with minor exposure to environmental factors like sun and pollution. This hair is healthy but still retains its tight cuticle structure.
  • Grade 3 Porosity: Hair that’s been chemically treated or colored. The cuticles are slightly open, allowing moisture in but losing it more quickly.
  • Grade 4 Porosity: Bleached or heavily lightened hair. The cuticles are quite open, so the hair loses moisture easily.
  • Grade 5 Porosity: Severely damaged hair. The cuticles are gone, leaving the inner hair exposed. This hair feels gummy and breaks easily, and often needs to be cut to restore health.
  • Grades 1 and 2 are low porosity, grade 3 is medium, and grades 4 and 5 are high porosity. High porosity hair benefits from protein-rich products that help rebuild the cuticle and lock in moisture.

How to Test Your Hair Porosity

Wondering how to figure out your hair porosity? There are a few simple tests you can do.

The Glass of Water Test: Take a clean strand of hair and drop it into a glass of water. If it floats, you have low porosity hair. If it sinks slowly or stays in the middle, you have medium porosity. If it sinks straight to the bottom, your hair has high porosity.

The Texture Test: Run your fingers along a hair strand. If it feels smooth, your hair is low porosity. If it feels bumpy or rough, your hair is high porosity.

The Spray Test: Spray some water on clean, product-free hair. If the water beads up without soaking in, your hair has low porosity. If the water sinks in after a moment, you have medium porosity. If it absorbs right away, you have high porosity.

Caring for Different Hair Porosity Levels

Once you know your hair porosity, you can better understand how to care for your locks. Each porosity level needs different types of products and care routines.

Low porosity hair: This hair type needs lightweight products that won’t sit on the surface of the hair. Use heat or steam when deep conditioning to help open the cuticles and allow moisture in.

Read: US Deploys THAAD Missile Defence System to Israel After Iranian Missile Attack

Medium porosity hair: You’re in luck! Medium porosity hair is the easiest to care for. It absorbs moisture well and doesn’t lose it too quickly. Stick with a balanced routine that includes hydration and protein to keep your hair in good shape.

High porosity hair: This hair type needs lots of moisture and protein. Look for products that are rich in oils, butters, and proteins to help strengthen and hydrate your hair. Deep conditioning and protein treatments are a must to keep your hair strong and healthy.

Curly Hair and Hair Porosity

If you have curly hair, it’s likely you’re dealing with varying porosity levels, especially if you’re transitioning to natural hair. You might have low or medium porosity roots and high porosity ends due to past heat styling or chemical treatments. Always treat your hair for the highest porosity level, which needs more care and attention. Achieving a protein-moisture balance will help maintain healthy, bouncy curls.

Why Does Hair Porosity Matter?

Understanding your hair’s porosity is key to making the right product choices. If you use products that aren’t suited to your porosity, you might not get the results you want. Low porosity hair can become weighed down with heavy products, while high porosity hair might not get enough moisture from lightweight formulas.

Knowing your hair porosity can transform your hair care routine and help you achieve healthy, hydrated hair. Whether you have low, medium, or high porosity hair, the right care routine will help you lock in moisture and keep your hair looking its best.

Still unsure what your hair porosity is or how to test it accurately? There are several simple porosity hair tests you can try to figure it out. If you’re asking “how to tell if hair is high or low porosity” or “what porosity is my hair”, start with the glass of water method or use a porosity test on hair to observe how your strands react to moisture. These hair porosity tests help you identify whether you have low porosity, where the cuticles

China Conducts Military Drills Around Taiwan Amid Rising Tensions

China deployed fighter jets and warships to encircle Taiwan on Monday. The drills are part of Beijing’s efforts to send a “stern warning” to what it describes as “separatist” forces on the self-ruled island. This military maneuver marks the fourth round of large-scale war games conducted by China in the past two years.

The United States criticized China’s actions as “unwarranted.” U.S. officials warned that such military activity risks escalating tensions in the region. They urged Beijing to exercise restraint in its dealings with Taiwan.

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te, who took office in May, has adopted a more vocal stance on defending Taiwan’s sovereignty. This approach has angered Beijing, which labels him a “separatist.” On Monday, Lai vowed to protect “democratic Taiwan” and safeguard national security. The Taiwanese defense ministry confirmed it dispatched “appropriate forces” in response to the drills.

AFP journalists stationed near the Hsinchu air force base in northern Taiwan reported seeing 12 fighter jets take off on Monday. The defense ministry stated that outlying islands controlled by Taiwan were on “heightened alert.” It also emphasized that “aircraft and ships will respond to enemy situations in accordance with the engagement rules.”

The Chinese military’s Eastern Theater Command characterized the drills, named Joint Sword-2024B, as a test of troops’ “joint operations capabilities.” Spokesman Captain Li Xi indicated that the exercises are taking place in areas to the north, south, and east of Taiwan Island. The focus includes sea-air combat readiness and blockades of key ports.

China’s coast guard was also deployed for “inspections” around Taiwan. A diagram released by the coast guard illustrated four fleets encircling the island. The coast guard in Fujian, the closest mainland province to Taiwan, announced that it was conducting “comprehensive law enforcement patrols” near the Taiwan-controlled Matsu islands. Although Taiwan reported the presence of four formations of Chinese coast guard ships, it confirmed they had not entered restricted waters.

In recent years, China has increased military activity around Taiwan, regularly sending warplanes and maintaining a near-constant naval presence. Taiwan’s defense ministry stated that all personnel are on full alert amid these threats.

Following the drills, Lai convened a high-level security meeting. Joseph Wu, secretary-general of the National Security Council, labeled the exercises as “inconsistent with international law.” In a speech marking Taiwan’s National Day, Lai emphasized the need to resist any annexation by Beijing and asserted that Beijing and Taipei are “not subordinate to each other.”

Beijing insists that the drills are necessary for “safeguarding state sovereignty and national unity.” The Taiwanese defense ministry reported detecting 25 Chinese aircraft and seven navy vessels around the island over a 26-hour period.

Lieutenant Colonel Fu Zhengnan from the Chinese Academy of Military Sciences warned that the drills could escalate into combat at any moment. He stated that if Taiwan separatists provoke China, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) will take immediate action.

Taiwan’s coast guard detained a Chinese man on one of its outlying islands, citing a possible “grey zone intrusion.” This term refers to tactics that stop short of direct warfare.

Despite the escalating tensions, residents in Taipei appeared largely unfazed during the morning rush hour. Benjamin Hsiao, a 34-year-old engineer, commented, “I won’t panic too much because they quite often have drills. It’s not the first time in recent years anyway, so I feel a bit numb.”

The historical conflict between China and Taiwan dates back to a civil war, when nationalist forces fled to Taiwan after being defeated by Mao Zedong’s communist fighters in 1949. Since then, the two regions have operated under separate governments.

PM Shehbaz Sharif Inaugurates Gwadar International Airport, Chinese Premier Li Qiang Visits

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated the Gwadar International Airport on Monday, via a virtual ceremony, highlighting it as a “gift” from China. The event took place during the visit of Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang, who arrived in Pakistan for a four-day bilateral trip. This visit marks the first by a Chinese premier in 11 years, with the last being by Li Keqiang in May 2013.

The inauguration ceremony included the unveiling of the airport plaque and was attended by both delegations, military leaders, and senior officials. PM Shehbaz expressed hope that the new airport would transform the economy of Gwadar and Pakistan as a whole. He acknowledged the Chinese leadership’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s economic agenda and developing its less prosperous regions.

During the ceremony, PM Shehbaz emphasized the strong friendship between Pakistan and China. He stated that the completion of the airport signified the dedication of both nations to enhance their ties. He also noted the signing and exchange of several memorandums of understanding (MoUs) in various sectors, including industry, commerce, and agriculture, which he expects will evolve into formal agreements.

“another feather in the cap”

The Prime Minister extended his gratitude to Chinese President Xi Jinping, Premier Li, and the people of China for their support. He remarked that the airport is “another feather in the cap” of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). PM Shehbaz assured Premier Li of Pakistan’s commitment to working closely to complete the second phase of CPEC, emphasizing the importance of peace and security for both nations.

In response, Premier Li congratulated Pakistan on the completion of the Gwadar airport, thanking the Pakistani people for their support. He described the project as a manifestation of the hard work and collaboration between Chinese and Pakistani engineers. He highlighted the airport’s significance for enhancing regional connectivity and boosting shipping and port activities.

More High-qualityz Projects

Premier Li reaffirmed China’s commitment to working with Pakistan on high-quality projects under the Belt and Road Initiative. He characterized the Pak-China relationship as a “special friendship” and underscored the deepening of their all-weather strategic partnership. He reiterated the importance of accelerating mutual economic development.

Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal expressed gratitude to Premier Li for his inspiring remarks and commitment. He pointed out that the airport symbolizes economic prosperity and will pave the way for regional connectivity.

The airport’s virtual launch was initially delayed due to violent incidents in Balochistan in August. Both nations took the opportunity to reaffirm their support for each other on core issues and pledged to advance CPEC’s second phase to the highest standards.

During the delegation-level talks at the Prime Minister’s House, PM Shehbaz and Premier Li discussed various aspects of their bilateral relationship, regional, and global issues. They expressed satisfaction that the Pakistan-China Strategic Cooperative Partnership, built on mutual trust, continues to strengthen.

Both leaders stressed the timely completion of ongoing projects across sectors, including industry and technology, to benefit the socio-economic development of Pakistan. PM Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to ensuring the safety of Chinese nationals and investments.

Father Admits to Killing 10-Year-Old Sara Sharif

The father of 10-year-old Sara Sharif, Urfan Sharif, confessed to killing his daughter in an eight-minute call to police from Pakistan, a court heard. The call was made on August 10 last year, about an hour after his family landed in Islamabad. Sara’s body was later found at their home in Surrey.

Mr. Sharif, 42, along with Sara’s stepmother, Beinash Batool, 30, and her uncle, Faisal Malik, 29, denied murdering the young girl during their trial at the Old Bailey. The court was told that Mr. Sharif claimed in his defense that Ms. Batool was responsible for Sara’s death. He said his confession, both on the phone and in a note found later, was false and made to protect Ms. Batool.

Urfan Sharif, Beinash Batool, and Faisal Malik each face two charges in connection with Sara Sharif’s death.

Weeks of Abuse and Severe Injuries

Prosecutor Bill Emlyn Jones KC detailed how Sara had endured violent assaults over several weeks before her death. He described the external and internal injuries she had suffered, including extensive bruising, burns, and broken bones. Sara had old and new injuries, with some caused by a domestic iron on her buttocks. She also had six probable human bite marks on her arms and legs.

The court heard that dental impressions ruled out the male defendants as the source of the bite marks. However, Ms. Batool refused to provide dental impressions, raising further suspicion about her involvement.

Sara also had injuries to her ribs, shoulder blades, fingers, and 11 separate fractures to her spine. Prosecutors said these were signs of a traumatic brain injury.

Confession to Police

During his call to Surrey Police from Pakistan, Mr. Sharif admitted to killing his daughter. He told the operator that he had “legally punished her” and she died as a result. Later in the call, he said Sara had been “naughty,” and he beat her, but insisted he had not intended to kill her. “It wasn’t my intention to kill her, but I beat her up too much,” he admitted.

The prosecution emphasized that Sara’s treatment in the last few weeks of her life was brutal, far beyond just a beating.

Note Found Next to Sara’s Body

When police found Sara’s body in her Surrey home, she was discovered on a bottom bunk bed, under covers, as if she was asleep. Next to her body, officers found a handwritten note by Mr. Sharif. In the note, he confessed to killing Sara by beating her. He also expressed fear and promised to surrender and accept punishment. “I swear to God that my intention was not to kill her, but I lost it,” the note read.

Prosecutor Emlyn Jones said the note, like the 999 call, appeared to be a confession to Sara’s death caused by the father’s violence.

Shifting Blame Among Defendants

The three defendants, who had lived with Sara before her death, also faced charges of causing or allowing the death of a child. They all denied the charges. Prosecutors argued that each defendant tried to shift the blame onto the others.

Mr. Emlyn Jones said it was “inconceivable” that any of the adults could have carried out the abuse without the involvement of the others. None of the defendants reported Sara’s abuse to authorities, despite the horrific injuries she sustained.

The trial continues.

US Deploys THAAD Missile Defence System to Israel After Iranian Missile Attack

The United States will send a high-altitude anti-missile system and military crew to Israel to strengthen its air defenses following a missile attack from Iran. The Pentagon confirmed the deployment of the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery and its crew. This move is part of President Joe Biden’s order to help defend Israel.

On October 1, Iran launched nearly 200 ballistic missiles toward Israel. The Israeli military intercepted most of them, but some missiles struck central and southern Israel. Israel has not yet disclosed its exact response plan. However, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant warned that their retaliation would be “deadly, precise, and above all surprising.” In response, Iran vowed that it would retaliate against any Israeli attack.

The Pentagon emphasized that this deployment demonstrates the U.S.’s strong commitment to defending Israel and Americans in the region from future ballistic missile attacks by Iran. The United States had previously sent a THAAD battery to the Middle East after Hamas attacked southern Israel in 2023. Another THAAD battery was sent to Israel in 2019 for training and air defense exercises, but deploying a military crew to Israel is a more significant and rare move.

Iran claimed that the October 1 missile attack was in response to Israel’s recent assassinations. These included Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, an Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) officer in Beirut, and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Israel has ramped up its military campaign against Hezbollah, carrying out air strikes across southern and eastern Lebanon, including parts of Beirut.

Cross-Border Fire Since Last October

The cross-border fire between Israel and Hezbollah has been ongoing since last October when Hezbollah began launching rockets into Israel. Hezbollah stated that the attacks were in support of Palestinians in Gaza and said they would cease if a ceasefire were agreed upon. However, international efforts to mediate a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza have failed so far.

Read: Israel Launches Cyberattack on Iran’s Nuclear Facilities

The THAAD system, made by Lockheed Martin, provides another layer of missile defense for Israel. It can intercept short, medium, and long-range threats both inside and outside the atmosphere. THAAD missiles, which have a range of up to 200 kilometers, use a “hit-to-kill” technique to neutralize targets.

Israel’s missile defense system is already robust. It includes the Iron Dome for short-range rockets, David’s Sling for longer-range weapons, and Arrow 2 and 3 for ballistic missiles launched from over 1,000 kilometers away. Defending against ballistic missiles is especially challenging due to their high speed and unpredictable flight path, particularly in their final phase.

Hezbollah in Lebanon, which receives significant support from Iran, reportedly has around 150,000 rockets at its disposal, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Surge in Dengue, Malaria, Chikungunya Cases Overwhelm Karachi Hospitals

KARACHI: Hospitals across Karachi are witnessing a surge in patients suffering from vector-borne diseases such as dengue, malaria, chikungunya, and other viral infections. Every day, at least 50 patients arrive at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC) and Civil Hospital with symptoms including cold, fever, and body aches. Many of these cases are suspected to be dengue, malaria, or chikungunya.

The Sindh Health Department reports that 411 suspected cases of chikungunya have been recorded in the province this year. Out of these, 153 cases have been confirmed after diagnosis. Dengue cases are also rising, with 1,724 cases reported in Sindh, of which 1,484 were documented in Karachi alone. Tragically, one death from dengue has been confirmed.

Malaria continues to be a serious concern. Sindh has seen at least 222,239 cases of malaria this year, with 1,768 of these reported in Karachi. The growing number of chikungunya cases is overwhelming hospitals as more patients seek treatment for symptoms associated with the disease.

Geo News has learned from sources that chikungunya testing kits are unavailable in government hospitals, leaving healthcare facilities struggling to cope with the influx of patients.

Symptoms and Causes

Dr. Bilal Aheed, a family physician at Aga Khan Hospital, explained to Geo.tv that people infected with these viral diseases often experience high-grade fever, body aches, joint pain, and swelling or redness on the skin. These symptoms are particularly associated with dengue and chikungunya, both of which are spread by mosquitoes, he said.

The specific mosquitoes responsible for transmitting these diseases are Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, Dr. Aheed added. These mosquitoes thrive in urban environments and breed in stagnant water, such as in open containers, puddles, or water tanks.

Preventive Measures

Dr. Aheed urged the public to take preventive measures to protect themselves from these infections. He advised:

  • Eliminate stagnant water around homes.
  • Keep water containers tightly covered.
  • Use mosquito repellents and bed nets.
  • Wear long-sleeved clothing, especially in the early morning and evening when mosquitoes are most active.

As Karachi continues to battle the increasing spread of vector-borne diseases, healthcare professionals emphasize the importance of prevention and timely medical attention. With dengue, malaria, and chikungunya affecting more people across the city, it is crucial for residents to remain vigilant and take steps to reduce the risk of infection.

Meghan Markle’s Charity Visits Fail to Impress UK Public

Meghan Markle’s recent solo charity visits have not won over the UK public, despite hopes that they would improve her popularity. Royal historian Hugo Vickers pointed to cultural differences between the US and the UK as a key factor in the mixed reception.

The Duchess of Sussex recently made appearances at Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara and attended the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles gala, aiming to highlight charitable causes close to her heart. However, Vickers argued that these efforts have not resonated as expected in the UK.

Read: Tanager-1 A New Era in Monitoring Climate Change

Speaking to The Sun, Vickers noted that Meghan’s choice of wearing a red dress during these appearances, which he described as a “power statement” in the US, did not have the same effect in the UK. “Her wearing a red dress is this sort of power statement like Princess Diana wearing a black dress when she went to the Serpentine Gallery,” he explained.

He continued, “I don’t think that anything she’s doing at the moment is going to appeal to people in the UK very much. This sort of symbolism works better in America than it does over here.”

Meghan has faced ongoing challenges in winning favor with the British public, particularly after stepping back from royal duties alongside her husband, Prince Harry. Despite her charitable efforts, the reception in the UK remains lukewarm, as royal commentators like Vickers believe her actions are better suited to American sensibilities than those in Britain.

While her solo charity visits highlight her commitment to making a difference, bridging the cultural gap between the US and UK remains a challenge for the Duchess.

FBR Deadline for Tax Returns Ends Today

LAHORE: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has set today, October 14, as the final deadline for filing tax returns for the financial year 2023-2024. After multiple extensions, today is the last chance for the public to submit their tax documents.

On Sunday, the FBR confirmed the deadline extension in an official statement. The decision came after several requests from the public, trade organizations, and tax bar associations. According to the sources, this would be the final extension.

FBR Chairman Rashid Mehmood Langrial issued a stern warning last week to those attempting to evade taxes. He emphasized strict action against under-filers. He stated that non-compliance would lead to significant consequences, such as restrictions on financial transactions.

“People who fail to file their taxes will not be able to buy property, vehicles, or even operate bank accounts,” Langrial said. He also warned that air travel could be banned for those who don’t file their tax returns. He reiterated that October 14 is the last date for tax submissions, and no further extensions would be granted.

Non-filers

The government is taking serious steps to end the non-filer category. Non-filers have previously avoided paying taxes by paying small fees during transactions like buying property and cars. These loopholes will soon be closed. Individuals who fail to file taxes will face heavy restrictions on major transactions, Langrial added.

Last month, the FBR announced several restrictions aimed at increasing tax compliance. These include bans on purchasing property, buying vehicles, investing in mutual funds, and opening bank accounts for non-filers. International travel for non-filers will also be restricted, with the exception of religious purposes.

The government aims to broaden the tax base and increase revenue by enforcing these restrictions. Langrial also emphasized the importance of increasing tax compliance, as under-filing remains a significant issue in Pakistan’s tax system.

Government’s Goal

To address this, the FBR is enhancing its audit capabilities to catch those who under-report their income. The government’s goal is to raise the tax-to-GDP ratio to 15%. The provinces are also expected to increase their tax contribution, bringing the overall tax-to-GDP ratio to 18%.

This move is part of a broader effort to address Pakistan’s economic challenges by improving tax compliance and reducing tax evasion. The government believes that ending the non-filer category will help achieve these goals and ensure that everyone contributes their fair share to the country’s economy.

As the final deadline looms, the FBR urges all taxpayers to meet their obligations by filing their returns today to avoid facing these restrictions.

Israel Launches Cyberattack on Iran’s Nuclear Facilities

Iran has conveyed a warning after Israel launched cyberattack on iran’s nuclear facilities . The message reportedly addressed Iran’s potential response to any future Israeli attacks. This came after Iran suffered a series of heavy cyberattacks on its government institutions, Asharq Al-Awsat reported on Saturday.

Iranian Government Hit by Cyberattacks

According to Iran International, three branches of Iran’s government were targeted by cyberattacks. These attacks hit the judiciary, legislative, and executive branches. Ali Firouzabadi, former secretary of Iran’s Supreme Council of Cyberspace, confirmed the attacks. He said information was stolen from these branches.

Firouzabadi also mentioned that nuclear facilities and other networks, such as fuel distribution, municipal, transportation, and port systems, were also attacked. “These are just part of a long list of various areas across the country that have been attacked,” he said.

Aviation Restrictions in Iran

Following these cyberattacks, Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization announced new security measures. A ban on bringing pagers, walkie-talkies, and similar electronic communication devices into airplane cabins or checked luggage was imposed. The only exception to this ban is mobile phones.

Local media reported that airlines in the region, including Emirates, had already implemented similar restrictions. These measures follow a recent explosion in Lebanon linked to Hezbollah’s communication devices, which included pagers and walkie-talkies.

U.S. Sanctions in Response to Iran-Israel Tensions

On Friday, the United States imposed new sanctions on Iran’s oil and petrochemical sectors. These sanctions came as a response to Iran’s missile attack on Israel, which took place on October 1.

The sanctions target Iran’s so-called “ghost fleet,” a network of ships and associated companies involved in smuggling Iranian oil. These ships and firms span multiple jurisdictions, including the United Arab Emirates, Liberia, and Hong Kong. The fleet reportedly transports oil to buyers in Asia, despite international sanctions.

These developments add further tension to the already volatile relationship between Iran and Israel. The cyberattacks, aviation restrictions, and U.S. sanctions illustrate the increasing complexities in the ongoing conflict.

As both countries prepare for potential future confrontations, the international community watches closely, particularly regarding the cyber warfare and economic measures being employed.

Drone Strike on Israeli Army Base Kills Four Soldiers, Injures 58

A drone strike targeted an army base in northern Israel, resulting in the deaths of four soldiers and injuries to 58 others. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported the casualties, noting that seven soldiers suffered severe injuries. The attack occurred at a base near Binyamina, a town located approximately 20 miles south of Haifa.

Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the strike. The group stated it targeted a training camp for the IDF’s Golani Brigade, situated between Tel Aviv and Haifa. Hezbollah’s media office claimed the attack was in retaliation for recent Israeli assaults in southern Lebanon and Beirut.

The armed group employed a “swarm of drones” for the attack. This incident marks one of the most significant assaults on an Israeli position in over a year.

Casualty Details and Response

The Israeli ambulance service, Magen David Adom (MDA), reported that 61 people were injured in the drone strike, with three individuals in critical condition. MDA noted that 37 injured soldiers were transported to eight regional hospitals by ambulance or helicopter.

Before the IDF confirmed the fatalities, MDA provided initial casualty figures. Alongside the three critically injured, 18 soldiers sustained moderate injuries, 31 suffered mild injuries, and nine people experienced anxiety. The reason for the difference in reported critical injuries between MDA and the IDF remains unclear.

Israeli censorship rules initially restricted media outlets from reporting specifics about the targeted site until the IDF confirmed it was the Binyamina base. Reports suggested that the base may have been hit by a low-level drone launched from Lebanon. This type of weaponry appears to have bypassed early-warning alarms.

Emergency Response and Evacuations

Throughout the evening, news bulletins, social media updates, and online reports featured footage of emergency vehicles and helicopters transporting casualties to hospitals across northern Israel. Many wounded soldiers were evacuated to Hillel Yaffe Medical Centre in nearby Hadera. Others were taken to hospitals in Tel Hashomer, Haifa, Afula, and Netanya.

Details surrounding the attack are still emerging. Reports indicate that many injured soldiers were in a communal canteen when the drone strike occurred, catching them off guard. Images circulating on social media depict an empty mess hall with a gaping hole in the roof, illustrating the devastation caused by the attack.

Regional Tensions Escalate

The drone strike adds to the escalating tensions in the region. Hezbollah’s claims of responsibility indicate a significant response to Israeli military actions in Lebanon. The group’s actions reflect a broader conflict and a complex interplay of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah.

As the situation continues to develop, Israeli forces remain on high alert. Authorities are assessing the implications of this attack and potential responses. The incident underscores the volatile security environment in northern Israel and the challenges posed by cross-border engagements.

Live updates on this story will follow as new information becomes available. The Israeli government and military are expected to address the nation regarding the attack and its implications for ongoing security efforts in the region.

Tanager-1 A New Era in Monitoring Climate Change

The non-profit organization Carbon Mapper is stepping up the fight against climate change. They are using advanced satellite technology to monitor greenhouse gas emissions closely. This innovative approach demonstrates how high-tech environmental monitoring can inspire real action and foster creative solutions.

Tanager-1 Satellite Launch

The recent launch of the Tanager-1 satellite marks a significant achievement for Carbon Mapper. This initiative enhances our ability to combat climate change through technology. Tanager-1, developed in partnership with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and Planet Labs PBC, features an advanced imaging spectrometer. It can detect methane and carbon dioxide emissions precisely, even from remote areas.

Tanager-1 has a global reach. It doesn’t just monitor emissions in the United States. It also tracks emissions in international hotspots, contributing to global climate change efforts. This launch showcases Carbon Mapper’s commitment to tackling climate challenges worldwide.

Visualizing Greenhouse Gases

Tanager-1 took flight on August 16 from Vandenberg Space Force Base. It represents a collaboration of diverse minds with a shared vision. Thanks to its sophisticated imaging, Tanager-1 can monitor greenhouse gases that were difficult to track before.

James Graf, director for Earth Science and Technology at NASA’s JPL, said, “The first greenhouse gas images from Tanager-1 are exciting and a compelling sign of things to come.”

Tracking Global Emissions

Already, Tanager-1 has captured images of methane and carbon dioxide over areas like Pakistan, South Africa, and Texas. These images highlight the impact of human actions on the planet. By collecting detailed data, Carbon Mapper can estimate emission rates, enhancing our understanding of climate change.

Tanager-1’s advanced imaging spectrometer detects specific chemical compounds beyond the visible spectrum. It identifies a unique “spectral fingerprint” for different substances, allowing accurate emissions monitoring at the facility level.

Sharing Data for Change

The Carbon Mapper team aims to make this crucial information accessible. Tanager-1 scans large areas of Earth daily, with data available through the Carbon Mapper data portal. This resource is invaluable for researchers and policymakers, empowering them to make informed decisions to combat greenhouse gas emissions.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for the removal of UN peacekeepers from southern Lebanon. He directed this demand to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. In a video statement on Sunday, Netanyahu insisted that the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) be relocated immediately. He made this request after several peacekeepers were injured in recent Israeli military actions.

“Mr. Secretary-General, get the UNIFIL forces out of harm’s way. It should be done right now, immediately,” Netanyahu stated. At least five UN peacekeepers sustained injuries in recent days as Israeli forces clashed with Hezbollah in the region. UNIFIL accused Israel of intentionally targeting its personnel.

US Condolences to Israel Over Soldier Deaths

Meanwhile, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin expressed condolences to Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. This came after the deaths of four Israeli soldiers in a Hezbollah drone attack on a military base in northern Israel. Austin emphasized the need for the safety of UNIFIL personnel and the Lebanese Armed Forces. He reiterated the US’s strong commitment to Israel’s security and urged action to address the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Austin stressed the importance of addressing the dire conditions in Gaza. He reaffirmed the US’s “unwavering, enduring, and ironclad commitment to Israel’s security.”

Israeli forces attacked displacement tents at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir el-Balah. The strike caused a massive explosion. A fire quickly engulfed the tents. As a result, four people have died while 70 others have been injured. Rescue teams are rushing to assist survivors.

Officials expect the death toll to rise as rescue operations continue. The fire spread rapidly, likely fueled by incendiary weapons. Many victims trapped themselves inside the tents.

Fire Destroys Tents at Gaza Hospital

The fire destroyed 20 to 30 displacement tents at the hospital. However, the civil defense teams faced delays because they had been deployed elsewhere earlier. Eyewitnesses reported loud explosions. Flames spread quickly through the plastic and wood materials. Rescue teams are still battling the fire. More deaths are expected as victims remain trapped in the burning tents.

Hezbollah Targets Israeli Forces

Hezbollah has claimed responsibility for shelling Israeli forces in southern Lebanon. According to the Hezbollah-affiliated Al-Manar news outlet, the Lebanese armed group attacked an Israeli infantry force trying to cross into Lebanese territory. They also targeted Israeli forces near the Labbouneh area with missiles. There have been no confirmed reports of Israeli casualties from these attacks.

New Zealand Condemns Targeting of UN Peacekeepers

New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Winston Peters condemned the recent attacks on UN peacekeepers in Lebanon, calling it a violation of international law. “Any targeting of UN peacekeepers is completely unacceptable,” Peters said in a statement. He stressed that UNIFIL plays a critical role in stabilizing the region and that Israel’s actions undermine the peacekeeping mission’s ability to mediate and provide humanitarian support.

Israel’s actions have raised tensions, as its forces reportedly destroyed a gate at a UNIFIL base while entering the site forcefully on Sunday.

UNIFIL Formed to Oversee Israel’s Withdrawal and Restore Peace

The Israeli military fired on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), injuring two international peacekeepers, according to a UN statement on Sunday. The incident occurred when an Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) Merkava tank shot at an observation tower at UNIFIL’s headquarters in Naqoura, a town in southern Lebanon.

“A Merkava tank fired its weapon toward an observation tower at UNIFIL’s headquarters, hitting it directly and causing two peacekeepers to fall and sustain injuries,” a UNIFIL spokesperson said. Israel confirmed its presence in the area and claimed it was targeting Hezbollah fighters near the UN positions.

What is UNIFIL?

The United Nations established UNIFIL in March 1978 after Israel invaded Lebanon. The UN Security Council passed Resolutions 425 and 426, calling for Israel to withdraw its forces from Lebanon and setting up the peacekeeping mission to oversee the withdrawal.

UNIFIL operates in southern Lebanon, close to the Israeli border, where Hezbollah has a significant presence. Its primary objectives are to confirm Israel’s withdrawal, restore international peace and security, and assist the Lebanese government in regaining control of the area.

Read: Iran Launches Missiles at Israel Amid Escalating Conflict

Are They Soldiers?

Although individual peacekeepers might have military backgrounds, they do not engage in combat during peacekeeping missions. UNIFIL personnel must remain impartial and only operate with the consent of the host nation.

The United Nations describes today’s peacekeeping operations as multidimensional. Besides maintaining peace and security, peacekeepers support political processes, protect civilians, assist in disarmament, help organize elections, and promote human rights. They also work to restore the rule of law.

Israeli Military’s Justification

Israel confirmed its military activity in Naqoura, stating it was responding to Hezbollah fighters in the vicinity of UNIFIL positions. The Israeli military’s actions in southern Lebanon are part of its ongoing conflict with Hezbollah, a Lebanese militant group that Israel considers a major threat.

This escalation adds to the tension between Israel and Lebanon, particularly in areas where Hezbollah operates. UNIFIL plays a crucial role in monitoring the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, making this attack on peacekeepers a serious concern for regional stability.

UNIFIL’s Role in the Region

Stationed along Lebanon’s southern border, UNIFIL, often finds itself in volatile areas where Hezbollah has influence. Its mission is to maintain peace and stability, which includes patrolling the border and mediating between Israel and Hezbollah forces when tensions rise. Despite its peacekeeping mandate, UNIFIL has faced challenges from both sides of the conflict, often navigating between Israeli military operations and Hezbollah’s activities.

Injury to Peacekeepers

The injuries to the two UNIFIL peacekeepers highlight the dangers international forces face in conflict zones. Although peacekeepers are non-combatants, they are often in harm’s way during skirmishes between warring parties. This incident serves as a reminder of the fragile peace along the Israel-Lebanon border.

As the situation develops, it remains unclear how this attack will affect the broader dynamics between Israel, Lebanon, and Hezbollah. The United Nations has called for restraint, urging all parties to respect UNIFIL’s mission and avoid further escalation.
