Foreign Dignitaries Arrive for SCO Summit Preparations

ISLAMABAD: The capital city is preparing for the 23rd Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, scheduled for October 15-16. Foreign dignitaries have started arriving in the capital for preparatory meetings. The summit will take place under stringent security arrangements.

Informed sources revealed that a four-member delegation from India, 76 delegates from Russia, 15 representatives from China, a two-member team from Iran, and a four-member delegation from Kyrgyzstan have reached Islamabad. Seven additional delegates from SCO also arrived on Sunday.

To ensure security for the event the Army has already been called in. It will oversee the protection of key government buildings, especially in the Red Zone. Rangers have also been deployed across the capital.

The federal government has assigned over 10,000 police personnel to safeguard the 900 expected delegates. Additionally, the metro bus service between Islamabad and Rawalpindi will be suspended during the summit. The government has declared a three-day public holiday for offices, schools, and commercial centers in Islamabad to facilitate smooth proceedings. Marriage halls will remain closed during the event.

Arrangements in Full Swing

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar confirmed that all preparations for the SCO Council of Heads of Government (CHG) meeting have been finalized. Speaking to reporters after reviewing the arrangements, Dar said that several countries, excluding India, had requested bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar accompanied Dar during his walk with reporters. The two provided first-hand information about the summit’s preparations.

Dar also urged Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to call off its planned protest on October 15. He argued that holding a protest at such a crucial time is against the national interest. Dar reminded reporters of the PTI’s protest in 2014, which had led to the postponement of a key visit by the Chinese president.

He criticized the PTI’s decision to stay away from the recent multi-party conference on Gaza, questioning what message the party intended to send with its actions. He also accused PTI of crossing red lines in the past, attacking state institutions, and urged its leadership to reconsider its protest plans.

Afghanistan’s Participation Uncertain

Dar said the SCO suspended Afghanistan’s observer status in 2021. Since then, Afghanistan has not participated in any SCO meetings. He added that Pakistan cannot decide alone on inviting Afghanistan, as SCO member states make all decisions collectively.

Dar emphasized that the entire region needs integration and peace, which aligns with the goals of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leadership.

Pakistan’s Diplomatic Standing

Dar dismissed claims of Pakistan’s diplomatic isolation. He pointed out that the country has become a hub for regional trade and investment. He cited recent visits from the Malaysian prime minister and a Saudi delegation as proof of Pakistan’s growing importance in the region.

As Islamabad welcomes international leaders for the summit, all eyes will be on the capital to ensure the event’s success amidst tight security and logistical arrangements.

Dar Urges PTI to Withdraw October 15 Protest for National Interest

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar on Sunday urged the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to cancel its planned protest on October 15. He appealed to PTI to make this decision in the “larger national interest.” His request comes as Pakistan prepares to host the Council of Heads of Government (CHG) meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Islamabad on October 15 and 16.

Dar emphasized the significance of the upcoming SCO meeting, where important issues will be discussed under the SCO framework. Speaking to journalists after reviewing the arrangements for the meeting, he highlighted the importance of ensuring a peaceful environment for the event. He pointed out that PTI had disrupted national politics before, notably during the 2014 protests, which led to the postponement of the Chinese president’s visit to Pakistan.

PTI Urged to Learn from the Past

Dar criticized PTI for repeating past mistakes and crossing red lines by attacking state institutions. He called on the party’s leadership to reconsider their decision for the greater good. According to Dar, such disruptions could have severe consequences for Pakistan’s diplomatic engagements and international reputation.

The deputy prime minister confirmed that several countries had requested bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the SCO meeting. He added that these meetings had already been finalized. However, India had not requested a bilateral meeting, and discussions with Indian officials would remain limited to SCO matters during the multilateral forum.

Afghanistan’s Participation Suspended

Regarding Afghanistan’s participation in the SCO, Dar explained that since 2021, Afghanistan’s Observer Status has been suspended. As a result, Afghanistan had not been invited to the current meeting, nor had it participated in previous SCO sessions. Dar noted that Pakistan could not decide on Afghanistan’s inclusion in the SCO on its own, as such decisions are made collectively by member states at the SCO forum.

Dar assured that Pakistan was fully prepared to host the CHG-SCO meeting and would meet its responsibilities as the host nation. He added that discussions on regional connectivity, including North-South and South-South connectivity, were ongoing both at bilateral and multilateral levels. Specific issues would be addressed within the framework and protocol of the SCO meeting.

Integration and Peace as Core Objectives

Dar stressed the importance of regional integration and peace, highlighting that it was a key objective of the current government. He mentioned that this focus on peace and integration is also part of the PML-N’s manifesto, driven by the leadership of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Efforts to Address Inflation and Economic Challenges

Dar also spoke about the government’s efforts to combat inflation, stating that they are working towards meeting their target by next year. He encouraged critics to reassess their claims that Pakistan was facing diplomatic isolation. Instead, he pointed to recent high-profile visits, such as those of the Malaysian Prime Minister and a Saudi delegation, as evidence of Pakistan’s growing regional importance.

The deputy prime minister emphasized that Pakistan is emerging as a hub for regional trade and investment. With continuous discussions on trade and commerce between SCO member states, Dar affirmed that Pakistan is playing a central role in fostering economic cooperation in the region.

SpaceX Achieves Historic Recovery with Fifth Starship Test Flight

SpaceX successfully launched its fifth Starship test flight on Sunday, making a groundbreaking recovery of its towering first-stage Super Heavy booster. This is the first time SpaceX has utilized large metal arms attached to the launch tower to catch the booster mid-landing. The rocket lifted off at 7:25 am (12:25 GMT) from SpaceX’s launch facility in Boca Chica, Texas, sending the second-stage Starship towards its target destination in the Indian Ocean.

Milestone in Rocket Landing Technology

After separating from the second-stage Starship at around 74 km (46 miles) in altitude, the Super Heavy booster made a historic return to the launch pad. Two robotic arms, designed to catch the rocket, successfully secured the booster. SpaceX founder Elon Musk shared his excitement on X, saying, “The tower has caught the rocket!!”

This achievement marks a significant advancement in reusable rocket technology, a critical step for SpaceX’s long-term goal of making space exploration more cost-effective. Previous attempts saw boosters either explode or land in the ocean. This successful recovery demonstrates a new level of precision in rocket landings.

Improvements Over Previous Tests

The nearly 121-meter (400-foot) Starship arced over the Gulf of Mexico after liftoff. While earlier Starship tests faced difficulties, this launch showcased the engineering advancements SpaceX has made. The June test flight was the most successful until now, ending without an explosion but missing a perfect landing.

During this test, SpaceX raised the bar by attempting to land the first-stage booster back at the launch pad, where it had taken off just seven minutes earlier. SpaceX’s Dan Huot, observing from the launch site, said, “I am shaking right now,” while Kate Tice from SpaceX headquarters added, “This is a day for the engineering history books.”

Manual Landing Decision

The landing decision was left to the flight director, who used manual control to assess the conditions in real-time. Both the booster and the launch tower had to be stable for the attempt to proceed. SpaceX stated that if the conditions were not ideal, the booster would have been directed to land in the Gulf of Mexico, as had happened in previous tests. Fortunately, everything went as planned, and the rocket was successfully caught by the robotic arms.

Starship’s Journey Continues

Once the Super Heavy booster separated, the retro-style stainless-steel Starship spacecraft continued its mission. It is set to attempt atmospheric reentry and a controlled splashdown in the Indian Ocean, west of Australia. This test flight follows upgrades made to the spacecraft’s software and heat shield after the June test, in which some parts of the spacecraft came off during reentry.

SpaceX has improved the Starship’s thermal tiles, which are critical for protecting the spacecraft during reentry. The success of this mission demonstrates the company’s progress towards achieving fully reusable rockets.

A Step Closer to Reusable Space Travel

This latest achievement brings SpaceX one step closer to its goal of creating a fully reusable rocket system, a key element in reducing the costs of space missions and making space travel more frequent. The combination of booster recovery and spacecraft improvements showcases the company’s innovative approach to space exploration.

With this successful test, SpaceX continues to push the boundaries of what is possible, cementing its position as a leader in the future of space travel.

Babar Azam Turns 30: A Journey of Highs and Recent Setbacks

Babar Azam was at the pinnacle of his cricketing career just two years ago. As the captain of Pakistan’s national team and a top-rated batsman in all three formats, he was widely regarded as one of the best in the world. However, as he celebrates his 30th birthday at home on Tuesday, the same day the second Test against England begins in Multan, his career has taken a dramatic turn.

On Sunday, Babar was left out of Pakistan’s squad for the remaining Tests, marking a significant change for the star player who had struggled with form in recent times. His omission comes after a poor run, having failed to score a fifty in his last 18 Test innings, a steep fall from his former dominance.

This is the first time Babar has been dropped from the Pakistan team since making his debut in white-ball cricket in 2015 against Zimbabwe and his Test debut a year later against the West Indies. His rise to fame was swift, with three consecutive hundreds in an ODI series against the West Indies in 2016 that made him a household name.

Babar dethroned Virat Kohli

In 2021, Babar dethroned India’s Virat Kohli to become the world’s number one ODI batsman, a position he still holds today despite a brief stint where he was overtaken. His consistency in limited-overs cricket earned him comparisons to modern-day greats, including Kohli. In T20 cricket, he still ranks fourth among batsmen globally, but it is in the Test arena where his form has suffered the most, causing him to fall out of the top 10 rankings.

Babar’s cricket journey began humbly as a 13-year-old ball boy in Pakistan’s Test against South Africa in Lahore in 2007. Watching his idol AB de Villiers from the sidelines fueled his dream of playing for Pakistan. He took the first step by excelling in the 2010 Under-19 World Cup, finishing as Pakistan’s top scorer with 298 runs. By the 2012 U19 World Cup, he was captain and once again the top scorer for his team, amassing 287 runs.

Babar’s transition to the senior team came in 2015, and he quickly made his mark in the white-ball format. His exceptional form carried over into all three formats, and his partnership with Mohammad Rizwan in T20 cricket became the most prolific in the format, accumulating 3,268 runs in 70 innings.

Memorable Achievements

One of Babar’s most memorable achievements came in the 2021 T20 World Cup, where he anchored Pakistan’s historic victory over arch-rivals India in Dubai. Another remarkable moment was his brilliant knock of 196 against Australia in Karachi in 2022, which helped secure a draw against one of the world’s best pace attacks, featuring Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Nathan Lyon. This innings was hailed as one of the greatest in Pakistan’s Test history.

However, the pressure of captaining a Pakistan team struggling with consistency began to weigh on Babar. His form with the bat deteriorated, and Pakistan’s first-round exit from the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, where they lost to Afghanistan for the first time, added to the strain. Following this, Babar stepped down from the captaincy in all formats.

Despite being reinstated as the white-ball captain earlier this year, Babar resigned from the role for the second time this month, marking the end of his tenure as Pakistan’s leader. As he turns 30, Babar Azam’s future in cricket remains uncertain, but his legacy as one of Pakistan’s greatest batsmen is already firmly established.

Clashes Erupt in Karachi as Protesters Defy Section 144

KARACHI: Demonstrators from two separate groups clashed with riot police on Sunday, defying Section 144, resulting in the arrest of over 100 individuals. The protests were held in response to the killing of blasphemy suspect Dr. Shahnawaz Kunbhar.

The clashes occurred when participants of the ‘Sindh Rawadari March’ violated Section 144 by gathering outside Karachi Press Club. Section 144 bans assemblies of more than five people across the city. The police detained over 100 protesters from various locations, including the Karachi Press Club, Metropole Hotel, and Jinnah Hospital.

Four policemen were injured during the clashes and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, according to sources.

South Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Syed Asad Raza confirmed the arrests. “At least 20 people, including women, have been detained so far,” he said. In response to the unrest, more police forces were deployed around the press club and other key locations.

In another incident near the Governor House, police fired tear gas to disperse a religious organization holding a counter-protest near the Karachi Press Club. The protesters then moved towards Metropole Hotel, throwing stones at the police and injuring two officers. The crowd also reportedly set a police van on fire. As tensions rose, an additional 27 protesters, including women, were arrested near Teen Talwar in Clifton.

Sindh Minister Promises Action Against Police Misconduct

Sindh Home Minister Zia ul Hasan Lanjar addressed the media regarding the situation. He confirmed that two separate protests, one by civil society and another by Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), were staged at Karachi Press Club, Teen Talwar, and Metropole Hotel, despite the imposition of Section 144.

Lanjar explained that law enforcement had concerns about maintaining peace and order, especially since the protestors had ignored the Section 144 ban issued by Commissioner Karachi. “The protestors should have followed the law, but they violated it,” he stated.

The minister revealed that the protests were over the killing of Dr. Shahnawaz Kunbhar, a blasphemy suspect. He condemned the violent acts committed by some of the demonstrators, including the injuries to two police officers and the burning of a police van. “No one is allowed to take the law into their own hands,” Lanjar said, vowing strict action against those responsible.

Lanjar also expressed concerns that political elements were behind the protests. He said these groups were attempting to destabilize Karachi at a critical time when international delegations from the Shanghai Cooperation Conference were arriving in the city. “No one will be allowed to disturb the peace and sovereignty of Pakistan,” he added.

Furthermore, the minister confirmed that an investigation had been launched into the reported mistreatment of journalists and women protesters by law enforcement officials. He promised action against those responsible for any misconduct during the protests at the Karachi Press Club.

Ban on Protests and Public Gatherings

A day before the protests, the Karachi commissioner imposed a ban on all protests, sit-ins, rallies, and public gatherings in the city under Section 144, citing security concerns. The ban, effective from October 13 to 17, was implemented following the advice of an additional inspector general (AIG) of police in Karachi. The commissioner’s office issued a notification to enforce the ban to maintain peace during the sensitive period.

Despite the restrictions, protestors took to the streets, leading to the violent clashes and mass arrests that followed.

Pakistanis Brace for Fuel Price Hike Amid Economic Pressures

Pakistanis are preparing for another round of fuel price increases, potentially as high as Rs10.25 per liter for high-speed diesel (HSD), starting from October 16, 2024. The looming price hike adds to the country’s economic struggles, with inflation already affecting daily life.

The Pakistan State Oil (PSO) is set to propose new fuel prices to the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) on October 15. The proposal will likely recommend an increase of Rs3.95 per liter for petrol, Rs7.85 for kerosene, and Rs8.33 for light diesel oil (LDO). These increases will push the already high fuel prices even further, burdening consumers.

Part of the price hike includes a Rs2.75 per liter increase aimed at raising the profit margins for oil companies and petrol stations. The new proposed margins are Rs9.22 and Rs10.04 per liter, respectively.

Proposal in Review

Once OGRA reviews the proposal and the government gives its approval, the Finance Ministry will announce the final prices. If approved, petrol prices may rise to Rs250.98 per liter, with HSD reaching Rs256.54, kerosene climbing to Rs162.75, and LDO hitting Rs149.23 per liter.

The expected fuel price hike will have far-reaching effects on the economy. It is likely to increase transportation costs, putting additional pressure on businesses and consumers alike. With inflation already straining household budgets, this rise in fuel costs could make daily essentials even more expensive.

Economic Challenges

The government’s decision to raise fuel prices comes at a time when Pakistan is grappling with economic challenges, including rising debt, inflation, and a struggling currency. These fuel price hikes may further add to the public’s dissatisfaction, as many are already feeling the financial squeeze.

As Pakistanis brace for higher fuel prices, the impact on the overall cost of living is expected to be significant. Public transportation, goods, and services may all see price increases, adding more strain on consumers. Many fear that this may trigger a ripple effect across various sectors, leading to further price hikes for basic necessities.

In summary, Pakistanis are set to face another fuel price hike, adding to the country’s economic woes. With increases expected for petrol, diesel, kerosene, and LDO, the new fuel rates will likely put more pressure on consumers and businesses, making daily life more expensive in an already challenging economic environment.

Lawrence Bishnoi Gang Threatens Salman Khan’s Allies

New Delhi: The Lawrence Bishnoi gang has claimed responsibility for the murder of Baba Siddique. They have also issued threats to anyone who supports actor Salman Khan. The gang had previously fired warning shots near Khan’s house.

Baba Siddique, a former Maharashtra minister and three-time MLA, was shot dead on Saturday night near his son Zeeshan Siddique’s office in Bandra East. Speculation immediately arose about the Bishnoi gang’s involvement in the crime. On Sunday, the gang confirmed their role through a Facebook post by Shubuu Lonkar, believed to be linked to the Bishnoi gang.

Although Shubham Rameshwar Lonkar is in jail, the police revealed that his brother, Pravin Lonkar, posted the claim. Pravin was arrested shortly afterward. In the post, Lonkar claimed that Siddique was killed due to his ties with Dawood Ibrahim and his connection to Salman Khan. He also referenced the death of Anuj Thapan, who died in police custody earlier this year. Thapan had been arrested for firing shots outside Salman Khan’s home.

Thapan’s death on May 1 was initially reported as a suicide. However, his family alleged that he was tortured in custody. Lonkar’s Facebook post warned that anyone helping Salman Khan or Dawood’s gang should “settle their accounts.”

Police are currently verifying the authenticity of the Facebook post.

Baba Siddique, known for hosting lavish events, had once helped resolve a five-year feud between Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan at his ‘iftar’ party in 2013.

Bishnoi gang Targeted Two Celebs

The Bishnoi gang has targeted at least two celebrities in the past year due to their perceived closeness to Salman Khan. Khan visited Siddique in the hospital after the attack and also attended his residence on Sunday.

In November 2023, shots were fired at Punjabi singer Gippy Grewal’s house in Vancouver, Canada. The Bishnoi gang claimed responsibility, saying Grewal praised Salman Khan and treated him as a brother. Grewal denied any close association, saying he had only met Khan twice.

In September, another shooting occurred near the house of Punjabi singer AP Dhillon in Vancouver. Rohit Godara, a Bishnoi gang member, claimed responsibility for the attack. The shooting occurred after Dhillon released a music video that featured Salman Khan.

Why Salman Khan?

The Lawrence Bishnoi gang first gained national attention after claiming responsibility for the murder of musician Sidhu Moose Wala in 2022. The gang has made it clear that they want to kill Salman Khan due to his alleged involvement in killing blackbucks in 1998 during the filming of Hum Saath Saath Hain. The blackbuck is sacred to the Bishnoi community.

During a 2018 court appearance, Lawrence Bishnoi said, “We will kill Salman Khan in Jodhpur. Everyone will know once we take action.”

Heightened Security

Security around Salman Khan’s house, Galaxy Apartments in Bandra, has been increased. A firing took place near his residence on April 14, and Khan told police that he believed the Bishnoi gang was behind it. He said the attack was intended to kill him and his family.

Security has also been tightened in South Mumbai’s Malabar Hill, home to high-profile politicians like Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar. Baba Siddique had recently joined Mr. Pawar’s party earlier this year after 48 years with Congress.

Google Enhances Protections Against Evolving AI-Driven Gmail Attacks

Google has implemented advanced security measures to protect Gmail accounts. The hackers are also adapting with increasingly sophisticated attacks. With over 2.5 billion users, Gmail is a prime target for cybercriminals. Here’s what you need to know.

Scary Sophistication of AI-Driven Scams

Sam Mitrovic, a Microsoft solutions consultant, recently warned about a “super realistic AI scam call” that nearly deceived him. The incident began with a notification for a Gmail account recovery attempt. Mitrovic, aware of phishing tactics, ignored this notification, which appeared to come from the U.S., as well as a missed call claiming to be from Google in Sydney, Australia.

A week later, he received another recovery request followed by a phone call. This time, he answered. An American voice claimed to be from Google support, alerting him to suspicious activity on his account. To build trust and instill fear, the caller asked if Mitrovic was traveling and then inquired if he had logged in from Germany, which he hadn’t.

Read: 28 Children Die in Karachi Amid Diphtheria Outbreak

The caller then escalated the situation by claiming that an hacker had accessed his Gmail account for a week and had already downloaded his data. This revelation triggered alarm bells for Mitrovic, as he recalled the earlier notification and missed call. While still on the phone, he Googled the number calling him and discovered it led to Google business pages.

This tactic is particularly deceptive, as it could easily mislead many users, especially those in a state of panic. Although the number was linked to Google Assistant, it was not an official support line.

As attackers refine their methods, users must remain vigilant against such AI-driven threats.

Cristiano Ronaldo Shines as Portugal Defeats Poland in Nations League

PARIS: Portugal secured a 3-1 victory over Poland on Saturday, marking their third consecutive win in the Nations League. Cristiano Ronaldo played a pivotal role in the match, scoring and continuing his impressive form in the tournament.

The game began with Bernardo Silva opening the scoring in the 26th minute. He volleyed the ball into the net after Bruno Fernandes cleverly nodded a cross from Ruben Neves back toward him. Shortly after, Ronaldo capitalized on a rebound to double Portugal’s lead. Rafael Leao’s shot hit the post, but Ronaldo was in the right place at the right time to convert the chance, bringing his international goals tally to 133.

Although Piotr Zielinski managed to pull one back for Poland, an own goal from Jan Bednarek sealed Portugal’s victory. This win keeps Portugal as the only team in League A with a perfect record, putting them in a strong position to qualify for the quarter-finals next week.

Portugal’s Coach Expressed Satisfaction

Portugal’s coach, Roberto Martinez, expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance. “We worked very hard the last few days, preparing various solutions for this game,” he said. He added, “We controlled this game and played great as a team.”

Portugal now sits at the top of Group A1 with nine points, three ahead of Croatia, who defeated Scotland 2-1. In that match, Scotland took a surprise lead with Ryan Christie’s first-half goal in Zagreb. However, Igor Matanovic equalized before the break, and Andrej Kramaric scored the winner in the second half. Che Adams had a chance to equalize in stoppage time, but VAR disallowed his goal for offside. This loss marks Scotland’s third consecutive defeat in the group, extending their winless streak in competitive matches to nine games, the longest in their history.

Spain Narrowly Defeats Denmark

Meanwhile, Spain secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Denmark in Murcia. Martin Zubimendi scored the only goal of the match in the 79th minute, helping Spain climb to seven points in the group. Before the game, Spanish captain Alvaro Morata showcased the European Championship trophy to fans, adding excitement to the atmosphere.

Despite missing key players like Rodri and Dani Carvajal due to injuries, Spain managed to find a breakthrough. Zubimendi’s low drive from just outside the area slipped past Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, who had made several crucial saves earlier in the match, denying both Lamine Yamal and Morata.

“I’m very happy with the goal, but above all, in such a close game where we had to open the scoring,” Zubimendi said. Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente, praised Zubimendi, saying, “He’s one of the best players in the world in his position.”

With this result, Spain moved ahead of Denmark in the group standings. In another match in Group C3, Serbia claimed their first win of the tournament, defeating Switzerland 2-0. An own goal from Nico Elvedi put Serbia ahead, and Aleksandar Mitrovic doubled the lead before Predrag Rajkovic saved a penalty from Swiss striker Breel Embolo.

In other matches, Bulgaria played to a goalless draw against Luxembourg, while Northern Ireland drew with Belarus in Hungary. Romania achieved a comfortable 3-0 victory against Cyprus in Group C2, and Kosovo secured a 2-1 win over Lithuania.

As the Nations League progresses, the stakes continue to rise for all teams involved, with Portugal and Spain showcasing their strength in the competition.

Iran Launches Missiles at Israel Amid Escalating Conflict

The Middle East is engulfed in chaos as Iran launched missiles at Israel on Tuesday night. This attack is a direct response to Israel’s recent actions, including the killing of Hamas leader Ismael Haniyeh in Tehran and Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Lebanon.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed that it targeted multiple sites in Israel with over 200 missiles on October 1. An IRGC spokesperson stated, “The attack was a response to the Israeli atrocities against the people of Gaza and Lebanon.” While no deaths were reported, two Israeli civilians sustained injuries during the missile strike. However, reports indicate that some Israelis were killed shortly after the Iranian attack when armed men opened fire in Israeli territories.

Escalating Tensions in the Region

As tensions rise between Israel, backed by Western powers, and several Muslim nations, regional peace hangs in the balance. Analysts warn that Israel’s “expansionist ideology” threatens stability in the region, and an all-out war appears imminent. The ongoing violence has resulted in missile strikes and air raids by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) against civilians, a grim chapter in a history marked by Israeli brutality spanning over seven decades.

The current cycle of violence escalated in October 2023 when Hamas allegedly attacked Israel, resulting in nearly 1,200 Israeli civilian deaths and 250 people being taken hostage. In retaliation, Israel unleashed a ferocious military response, leading to widespread civilian casualties in Palestine. Israeli forces employed missiles, cluster bombs, and airstrikes, targeting hospitals, schools, and shelters. This onslaught has claimed the lives of approximately 42,000 Palestinians, including around 30,000 women and children.

International Response and Accusations of Genocide

The international community has condemned Israel’s actions. An International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling labeled Israel’s assaults on Palestinians as “genocide”. ICJ declared Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a “war criminal.” The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu. However, these efforts were undermined by the United States’ unwavering support for Israel.

Iran’s missile strike underscores the growing instability in the region, exacerbated by the backing of Israel by the US and other Western allies. Recently, Israel received $8 billion in aid from the US for its military efforts. This ongoing crisis highlights the inadequacies of international institutions. The United Nations have failed to enforce peace or initiate meaningful dialogue.

Muslim Nations Remain Silent

In this volatile scenario, Muslim populations in Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria continue to bear the brunt of the conflict. While there are 56 Islamic countries with two billion Muslims, many leaders have remained silent, offering little more than condemnations. The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has also failed to take effective action.

Iran stands out as the only nation willing to confront Israel’s aggression. The Iranian missile attack on October 1 is likely to have far-reaching consequences. Many countries that previously ignored the plight of Palestinians now condemn Iran’s actions, revealing a hypocrisy among global leaders, especially in the West.

Impending Threats of Retaliation

In response to the Iranian attack, Israeli officials, along with US leaders, have vowed revenge. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu called the missile strike a “mistake” and warned that “Iran will have to pay its price.” President Joe Biden expressed full support for Israel, indicating that discussions on retaliation are ongoing.

Conversely, Iranian leaders, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khomeini, warned Israel against further actions, stating, “Don’t dare to retaliate; our next attack will be more painful.” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Argachi cautioned the US military to stay clear of the conflict.

The situation necessitates restraint from all parties. Any further escalation could worsen the humanitarian crisis in the Middle East, potentially igniting a conflict that engulfs many nations and innocent civilians.

Pakistan Gears Up for SCO Heads of Govt Summit Amid Strict Security

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is set to host the 23rd Heads of Government Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and prepares for strict security. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited the Jinnah Convention Center on Saturday to review preparations, receiving briefings from the CDA chairman and Foreign Office officials.

As the current Chair of the SCO Council of Heads of Government, PM Shehbaz will preside over the summit. Leaders from China, Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan are expected to attend, alongside the First Vice President of Iran and India’s External Affairs Minister, marking a rare visit by India. The Prime Minister of Mongolia will participate as an observer, while the deputy chairman of Turkmenistan’s Cabinet and the foreign minister will join as special guests.

During the summit, discussions will focus on economic cooperation, trade, environmental issues, and socio-cultural links, while reviewing the organization’s performance. Additionally, PM Shehbaz plans to hold bilateral meetings with visiting delegations on the sidelines.

Partner Countries

The SCO, comprising China, India, Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus, also has 16 affiliated observer or dialogue partner countries. Some analysts view the SCO as a counter to the Western-dominated NATO alliance, especially in light of tensions involving China and Russia with the US and Europe.

However, domestic concerns may overshadow the summit. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has threatened protests, following a recent week of demonstrations that led to a lockdown of the capital. Ahsan Iqbal Chaudhary, the minister for planning, accused the PTI of attempting to portray Pakistan negatively during the summit.

In response, authorities have declared a three-day public holiday in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, implementing road closures to minimize disruptions. The “red zone,” where the summit will take place, has been fortified with security measures, including manicured lawns and razor wire.

Government’s Effort for Positive Image

Given Pakistan’s financial ties to China, particularly regarding infrastructure investments, the government is keen to maintain a positive image during the summit. This is especially critical as the country faces rising militancy linked to the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan.

Security has been heightened in the capital, with army troops deployed to ensure safety during the event. Additionally, the metro bus service will be suspended from October 14 to 17.

The Islamabad police have issued a traffic plan for the summit, directing diversions and road closures to manage the expected influx of vehicles. Heavy traffic will be prohibited from October 14 to 16, ensuring a secure environment for the summit attendees.

SC Retracts Mubarak Sani Case After Scholars’ Objections

ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court of Pakistan has retracted its earlier judgements in the high-profile Mubarak Sani case. The decision came after religious scholars raised objections to certain sections of the rulings.

The controversy started when the federal government and the Punjab government submitted applications to the court on July 24. They requested corrections in the judgements issued on February 6 and July 24. Following this, the Supreme Court issued notices to 19 prominent scholars. These scholars expressed concerns over three specific paragraphs—7, 42, and 49—in the rulings.

Upon reviewing the objections, the court held hearings to listen to the scholars’ arguments. As a result, the Supreme Court decided to remove the paragraphs in question. The court concluded that these sections might have caused misunderstandings or conflicts with religious principles.

In its final ruling, the court acknowledged the scholars’ concerns and emphasized the importance of maintaining harmony between legal decisions and religious values. The retraction of the earlier judgements marked a significant shift in the case, indicating the court’s willingness to reconsider its decisions when substantial objections are raised.

SC ordered to proceed the bail case independently

Moreover, the Supreme Court ordered the trial court to proceed with the bail case independently. This move gives the trial court the freedom to make its own decision without being influenced by the previous judgements. Legal experts believe this step will ensure a more transparent process moving forward.

The case of Mubarak Sani has drawn widespread attention, both for its legal complexities and the involvement of religious scholars. The case’s implications stretch beyond the individual matter, shedding light on how religious perspectives can impact judicial decisions in Pakistan.

The retraction of the Supreme Court’s previous rulings in this case highlights the judiciary’s responsiveness to valid concerns raised by scholars. This decision is expected to set a precedent for future cases involving similar religious sensitivities. At the same time, the court’s directive for the trial court to operate independently ensures that justice will continue to be served without undue influence from prior rulings.

Scotland Women vs England Women: Scotland Opt to Bat

Scotland have won the toss and chosen to bat first against England in match 17 of the Women’s T20 World Cup in Sharjah. This is a historic encounter as it’s the first-ever Women’s T20 International (T20I) meeting between England and Scotland. Both teams are familiar with each other, having played in the English domestic circuit, but this match will be the first time they face off on the international stage. With the temperature expected to reach 34°C, this will also be England’s first day game of the tournament.

Both teams have made changes to their playing XI. England have replaced Alice Capsey, who has been ill, with Sophia Dunkley. Fast bowler Lauren Bell also comes into the side for left-arm spinner Linsey Smith. Meanwhile, Scotland has made just one change, bringing in allrounder Megan McColl to replace Priyanaz Chatterji.

Group B

England currently sits third in Group B with four points, tied with West Indies but behind on net run-rate (NRR). A win today would bring them level with South Africa, who lead the group with six points and have already completed their matches. England will wrap up their group stage campaign against West Indies next Tuesday.

Captain Heather Knight and her team will be eager to not only win but also improve their NRR, which could be crucial for securing a semi-final spot. Facing a Scotland team yet to win a match in the tournament, England sees this as an opportunity for a comprehensive victory. Scotland, on the other hand, sits at the bottom of the group, having lost all three of their matches so far. Their defeats to West Indies and South Africa highlighted the gap in quality, but they’ve shown flashes of potential throughout the tournament.

Opportunity

For Scotland, this game presents an opportunity to end their World Cup campaign on a high note. Despite being out of knockout contention, they could make a statement by upsetting England. Moreover, the match is significant for Scotland’s wicketkeeper-batter Lorna Jack-Brown, who will be retiring from international cricket after the tournament to become a full-time police officer.

England’s lineup features strong names like Maia Bouchier, Danni Wyatt-Hodge, Nat Sciver-Brunt, and Heather Knight, who will lead the charge. In bowling, Sophie Ecclestone and Sarah Glenn will aim to restrict Scotland’s batting. Lauren Bell’s pace will also be something to watch in her first appearance in the tournament.

Scotland’s lineup, led by captain Kathryn Bryce, includes key players like wicketkeeper Sarah Bryce and Megan McColl. They will look to set a competitive target and challenge England’s bowling attack.

As the match unfolds, England will aim for a big win to solidify their place in the semi-finals, while Scotland will hope to make a memorable exit by giving the English side a tough challenge. The stage is set for an exciting contest in Sharjah.

Suzuki Every Launches, Replacing Iconic Bolan

Pak Suzuki Motor Company has announced the new model, Suzuki Every, marking the end of decades-long production of the iconic Bolan. The company’s Bolan has been a popular choice among Pakistanis, known for its affordability and versatility. With the introduction of Every, Pak Suzuki aims to offer an innovative and modern alternative to the masses.

In a statement to the media, Shafiq Shaikh, Head of Corporate Affairs at Pak Suzuki Motor Co. Ltd., revealed that the Suzuki Every will be available at authorized showrooms across Pakistan starting October 13, 2024. “Prospective buyers can also take the vehicle for a test drive the same day,” he added, further highlighting the company’s dedication to meeting customer needs. “This launch reinforces our commitment to providing customers with innovative, reliable, and affordable mobility solutions,” Shaikh stated.

Pak Suzuki Motor Company is a well-known automobile manufacturer in Pakistan, recognized for its popular models like the Suzuki Alto, Swift, and Cultus. As the largest passenger car assembler and manufacturer by volume in the country, the company’s move to introduce Every aims to tap into the needs of a wide range of customers, particularly in the commercial and daily-use vehicle segments.

Experts are Optimistic

Auto industry experts are optimistic about Every’s success in the market. Former PAAPAM chairman and auto sector expert Mashood Khan believes that Suzuki Every will cater to a gap in the market. “I think it will perform,” he stated, acknowledging the vehicle’s potential as both a school van and a loading vehicle, much like its predecessor, Bolan.

Meanwhile, auto analysts praised Suzuki’s decision to bring in a new, affordable model for Pakistani consumers. Usman Ansari, an auto sector analyst and founder of the website carspirit.pk, lauded the entry of Suzuki Every. “Customers were critical when the Mehran was discontinued, fearing Pakistan would no longer have economical cars,” Ansari noted. However, Suzuki Alto succeeded in filling that gap, achieving better sales. “I also expect Every to do better than Bolan, which lacked modern features and comfort,” he added.

The expected price of Suzuki Every is projected to be between Rs2.6 million and Rs2.7 million. However, Ansari expressed concern over the lack of an automatic version. “In today’s market, an automatic version is seen as an important feature,” he pointed out.

Estimated Price

Another auto sector analyst, Abrar Polani from Arif Habib Limited, also estimated the price of Every at around Rs2.6 million. He highlighted that this price point makes it easier for buyers to finance the vehicle, which could further boost its appeal. Additionally, Polani emphasized the vehicle’s improved safety features, a key selling point in today’s competitive market.

Auto sales in Pakistan have shown signs of recovery, particularly in the category of vehicles under 1000cc. Industry experts expect Suzuki Every to perform well, aligning with this upward trend. As the launch date approaches, excitement builds around the new model, which is expected to bring affordability, reliability, and better features to Pakistani consumers looking for economical mobility solutions.

PTI Leaders Divided Over Protest at D-Chowk During SCO Summit

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur have opposed the protest at D-Chowk on October 15. This protest coincides with the start of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Islamabad, where many foreign dignitaries will attend.

Several senior PTI leaders, including Asad Qaiser, Hamid Khan, and Raoof Hasan, also believe the protest is not in Pakistan’s best interest. They argue that holding such a demonstration during an important international event could harm the country’s image. Ali Muhammad Khan, who is not part of the PTI’s political committee, is also upset about the decision to protest on this sensitive occasion.

However, the hawkish elements within PTI, led by Shehbaz Gill, Hammad Azhar, Khalid Khurshid, and Hafiz Farhat, have pushed for the protest to proceed. These leaders convinced the PTI political committee to endorse the protest at D-Chowk, despite the potential diplomatic consequences. They plan to hold the protest on the first day of the two-day SCO summit, which will take place just a few kilometers from the protest site.

Surprisingly, Salman Akram Raja, a well-known lawyer, has also supported the hawks in the party. He endorsed the protest, despite its proximity to the high-profile international event. Sources indicate that his stance has surprised many PTI insiders yet Raja did not comment on that.

Gandapur Opposition Against the Protest

On the other hand, Chief Minister Gandapur voted against the protest, showing his concern for Pakistan’s reputation.

PTI sources have revealed that Murad Saeed, though not a political committee member, was the first to promote the protest call on social media. He posted about it on “X” soon after the decision was made. The party’s social media wing, led by figures like Gill and Azhar, has actively promoted the protest while targeting those within PTI who resist this decision. Their posts criticize PTI members who disagree with the protest, causing internal friction.

Many PTI leaders, including Gohar Ali Khan, are working behind the scenes to have the protest canceled. They fear that any violent clashes between PTI supporters and law enforcement agencies during the SCO summit could severely harm Pakistan’s international standing. A leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that any unrest could embarrass the country in front of its foreign guests, including several heads of government.

Another PTI leader, who also requested anonymity, admitted that ordinary PTI supporters are not enthusiastic about the protest. He said the timing, with the SCO summit underway, has frustrated many party voters. They see it as conflicting with Pakistan’s national interests, and many may choose not to participate.

Despite these efforts, the hawkish faction within PTI continues to push for the protest. Some leaders acknowledge that even if the protest attracts a crowd, it will still clash with Pakistan’s efforts to maintain good relations with the SCO member states. As October 15 approaches, the debate within PTI grows, but for now, the protest call stands, raising concerns about its potential impact on Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts.

Bollywood Celebs Mourn NCP Leader Baba Siddique’s Death

As the notorious criminal Lawrence Bishnoi’s group claimed responsibility for the murder of NCP leader Baba Siddique. The Revelations about Bishnoi’s access to mobile phones and a video chat from jail with a Pakistani mobster have surfaced.

In June of this year, a 19-second video clip purporting to show incarcerated mobster Lawrence Bishnoi conversing with Shahzad Bhatti. The video went viral online. After his name was linked to Siddique’s murder, users on the internet pointed to the video. An example of jail officials assisting him in continuing his illegal activities.

The 31-year-old mobster does not own a cell phone and instead utilises the phone of another prisoner or someone close to him.

Sidhu Moosewala’s Murder

According to a previous article in India Today, Bishnoi was made aware of the murder of Punjabi artist Sidhu Moosewala when he was incarcerated.

Bishnoi used cell phones in jails in Punjab, Rajasthan, and Tihar Jail in Delhi. The jail administration has refuted these claims, though.

The mobster Kunal Chhabra, who is wanted in multiple instances, stated last month that he got an extortion call from Bishnoi when the latter was still incarcerated.

Additionally, sources claimed that Bishnoi, who is incarcerated at Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Central Jail, had been fasting silently for the last nine days. It is thought that every time his gang commits a significant crime, Bishnoi keeps this silent fast.

In a social media post on Sunday, a purported Bishnoi gang member took credit for Baba Siddique’s murder. Baba Siddique was shot and killed on Saturday night outside his Mumbai office. The former minister’s purported relationship to Bollywood actor Salman Khan was also referenced in the post.

Salman Khan

“Salman Khan, we did not want this war, but you caused the death of our brother,” said the message. We do not harbour animosity towards anyone, but we will settle the accounts of those who assist Salman Khan or the Dawood gang.”

Since Salman Khan hunted two blackbucks in 1998—an animal revered by the Bishnoi community—the Lawrence Bishnoi gang has been pursuing him. Alleged members of the same gang fired fire at the Bollywood star’s Mumbai home in April of this year. The Bishnoi gang was infuriated when one of the gunmen involved later died in a Mumbai police station under dubious circumstances.

The social media post on Sunday said, “We will definitely retaliate if anyone gets any of our brothers killed.” We never launch an initial strike.

Govt Slams PTI for Protest on Oct 15 Ahead of SCO Summit

The government slammed Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) on Saturday for its call to protest on October 15. Officials labeled PTI’s planned protest as “terrorism” and compared it to the Taliban, accusing the party of undermining Pakistan’s progress. The protest coincides with the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, a key event for the country.

Federal ministers condemned PTI’s actions

Federal ministers, including Ahsan Iqbal, Khawaja Asif, and Azma Bokhari, as well as PML-N Senator Talal Chaudhry, strongly condemned PTI’s actions. They described the protest as a deliberate attempt to sabotage the summit and harm the country’s international reputation.

At a press conference, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal criticized the timing of the protest, emphasizing the significance of the SCO summit. He said, “This is a proud moment for Pakistan.” He explained that hosting the summit is a major honor and highlighted the importance of the Chinese Prime Minister’s extended visit.

Iqbal drew a parallel between terrorism in Karachi and PTI’s protest plans in Islamabad. Referring to a recent suicide attack near Karachi airport, he said, “There is no doubt that terrorism in Karachi and political terrorism protest calls are similar.” According to him, the same forces were behind both attacks, aiming to destabilize Pakistan.

The damage caused by sit-in

Moreover, Iqbal reminded PTI supporters of the damage caused by the 2014 dharna (sit-in). He claimed that the protest had delayed the Chinese president’s visit and hindered the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). “Now, as we enter CPEC Phase II, PTI is again trying to derail our progress,” he warned.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif echoed these concerns. He accused PTI of prioritizing its leader’s personal interests over national progress. In a separate address, Asif said PTI’s protest aimed to undermine Pakistan’s standing on the global stage.

“We will not be blackmailed,” Asif asserted, adding that the government would protect the country’s interests. He further stated that the full force of the state would be used against anyone attempting to spread chaos under the guise of protests.

War against the state

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari also took a harsh stance against PTI. She likened the party to the Taliban, accusing it of waging a war against the state. Bokhari stated that PTI would be treated as an enemy and called for national unity to eliminate the chaos caused by PTI’s actions.

Bokhari also accused PTI of holding its parliamentarians hostage in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. She claimed this was in response to the government’s proposed constitutional package. Additionally, she condemned PTI’s alleged plans for violent attacks during the SCO summit.

PML-N Senator Talal Chaudhry further described PTI’s protest as a conspiracy against the state. Speaking in Faisalabad, he warned that no Pakistani would support the party’s “anti-national stance.”

In response to the looming protest, the Punjab government imposed Section 144 in five more districts. This measure bans all political gatherings and protests in these areas for three days, starting October 12. The decision was made to ensure security during the SCO summit, which will see 200 foreign delegations arriving in Pakistan.

As tensions rise, the government remains firm in its stance against PTI’s protest. Officials continue to denounce the planned demonstration, emphasizing the need for stability as Pakistan hosts the crucial SCO summit.

Qatar Condemns Israel’s Seizure of UNRWA Headquarters in East Jerusalem

Qatar has strongly condemned Israel’s occupation of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) headquarters in East Jerusalem. The Qatari Foreign Ministry issued a statement denouncing the seizure, calling it a violation of international law.

Two days ago, Israel announced its plans to seize the land and build an illegal settlement on it. The Qatari government expressed outrage, stating that Israel’s actions are part of a larger effort to dismantle UNRWA, which Qatar believes is a deliberate attack on the United Nations itself.

Global Outcry Against Israel’s Actions

Qatar is not alone in its condemnation. The European Union (EU) also recently criticized Israel for targeting UNRWA, saying it is “gravely concerned” about Israel’s draft legislation aimed at banning the agency from operating within the country. The legislation, if passed, would severely limit UNRWA’s ability to provide aid in war-ravaged areas like Gaza.

Israel’s attacks on the UN agency have been deadly. So far, 226 UN employees have been killed by Israeli forces during its ongoing military campaigns. The latest offensive includes a raid on a village southwest of Nablus in the West Bank. Israeli forces stormed the village and carried out a large-scale search operation targeting vehicles and shops. Local media reported that soldiers used tear gas and burned Palestinian flags during the raid.

International Protests and Resistance

Protests against Israel’s actions are spreading globally. In Ireland, demonstrators blocked roads near Shannon Airport to protest the use of Irish airspace for U.S. and Israeli military aircraft carrying weapons to Gaza. Protesters expressed outrage over their country’s involvement, even indirectly, in the conflict.

Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes continue to pound Gaza. In one attack, Israeli forces targeted the town of Younin in Lebanon’s eastern Bekaa region. According to Al Jazeera’s Arabic correspondent, the assault caused significant damage, further escalating tensions in the region.

Innovative Solutions Amid Crisis in Gaza

Despite the violence, Palestinian engineers are developing innovative solutions to tackle the ongoing energy crisis in Gaza. One engineer has designed solar cookers that use mirrors to focus sunlight, offering a sustainable alternative to gas cylinders. These eco-friendly devices allow people to cook meals without relying on traditional fuel sources, which have been blocked from entering Gaza by Israeli forces.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to worsen. Gaza’s Civil Defence reported that five members of the Abu Dalal family were killed in an airstrike on the Nuseirat refugee camp. This brings the death toll from Israeli airstrikes to at least 36 in a single day.

Rockets Fired from Lebanon

Adding to the escalation, the Israeli military reported that 40 rockets were fired from Lebanon, some of which were intercepted, while others landed in open areas. Air raid sirens blared across Israel’s Upper Galilee region in response to the rocket fire.

As the conflict intensifies, global calls for an end to the violence grow louder. The international community continues to push for a ceasefire, but peace remains elusive in both Gaza and Lebanon.

Israel Faces Global Backlash, 2 UN Peacekeepers Injured in Lebanon

BEIRUT: Israel acknowledged on Friday that its forces fired at a “threat” near a UN peacekeeping position in Lebanon, leading to the injury of four UN Blue Helmets. The incident, which occurred over two days, has triggered a wave of diplomatic backlash.

The United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon confirmed that two more of its peacekeepers were wounded on Friday, just one day after two Indonesian Blue Helmets were injured in the same area. Israel’s army admitted the peacekeepers had been “inadvertently hurt” during clashes, and they promised to conduct a “thorough review” at the highest levels.

Condemnation from International Leaders

The incident has drawn sharp criticism from global leaders. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the attack, calling it “intolerable” and a “violation of international humanitarian law.” The British government also expressed its disapproval, stating it was “appalled” by the injuries to the UN peacekeepers.

In the United States, President Joe Biden confirmed he was “absolutely” pressing Israel to stop targeting UN peacekeepers. Likewise, European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, issued a joint statement expressing their “outrage” over the incident.

Macron went a step further, calling for an end to the export of weapons being used by Israel in both Gaza and Lebanon. He emphasized that the UN peacekeepers had been “deliberately targeted,” adding fuel to the already growing diplomatic tension.

Efforts for Ceasefire Continue

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts to negotiate a ceasefire in both Lebanon and Gaza have stalled. Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati announced that his government plans to ask the UN Security Council to issue a resolution calling for a “full and immediate ceasefire.” However, progress on such a resolution remains uncertain.

On the ground, Lebanon’s health ministry reported that the recent Israeli strikes killed 22 people and injured more than 100. The Israeli military reportedly aimed at Hezbollah’s security chief, Wafiq Safa, who was allegedly close to Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli strike in south Beirut last month, according to a source close to Hezbollah.

Gaza Suffers Heavy Casualties

In Gaza, the situation remains dire as Israel’s military campaign continues to wreak havoc. Gaza’s civil defense agency reported that 30 more civilians were killed in Israeli airstrikes on Jabalia, bringing the total death toll to 42,126, with most of the victims being civilians.

Despite international calls for restraint, Israeli airstrikes persist, causing immense destruction across Gaza and Lebanon. The humanitarian toll continues to rise, while diplomatic channels have so far failed to stop the escalating violence.

The international community is increasing pressure on Israel to halt its attacks, especially in light of the UN peacekeeper injuries. However, without a ceasefire in sight, the violence and backlash in both Gaza and Lebanon is likely to continue.

MQM Ties Support for Amendment to Local Government Powers

ISLAMABAD: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM) has made its backing for a constitutional amendment conditional on the inclusion of changes to Article A-140. The party wants these changes to ensure greater powers for local governments across the country.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a meeting with an MQM delegation to discuss the proposed constitutional amendments. According to an MQM spokesperson, the party urged the prime minister to empower local governments through a new draft of Article A-140.

Demands for Local Government Empowerment

During the meeting, MQM leaders demanded increased authority for local governments. They argued that strengthening local bodies is essential for effective governance. In fact, the delegation presented a detailed draft amendment outlining their proposal. This amendment seeks to redefine local government powers, granting them more control over administrative and financial matters.

Sources confirmed that the MQM delegation included prominent figures like Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, Aminul Haq, and Farooq Sattar. Meanwhile, the government team featured key officials, including Ishaq Dar, Ahsan Iqbal, Khawaja Saad Rafique, and Rana Sanaullah.

Prime Minister Assigns Review Task to Ministers

In response to MQM’s demands, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed senior ministers to review the proposal thoroughly. Ishaq Dar, Ahsan Iqbal, Ayaz Sadiq, Saad Rafique, and Rana Sanaullah were assigned the task of evaluating the MQM’s draft amendment.

Following the meeting, MQM sources reported that discussions were constructive, with both sides expressing a willingness to continue talks. However, the MQM emphasized that their support for the constitutional amendment hinges on ensuring local government empowerment.

High-Level PML-N Delegation to Visit MQM Headquarters

As a next step, a high-level Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) delegation was led by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar. The delegation will visit MQM’s Bahadurabad headquarters today. Moreover, the meeting is scheduled for Sunday at 2pm, and the PML-N team will discuss the draft amendment with MQM leaders in greater detail.

This upcoming meeting is crucial for finalizing both parties’ positions on the constitutional amendment. Sources suggest that the PML-N team will present their feedback on the MQM’s proposed changes to Article A-140, with the aim of reaching a mutual agreement.

Transitioning Towards Consensus

Although both parties have yet to finalize their stance, there appears to be a willingness to find common ground. The MQM remains firm in its demand for local government reforms, while the PML-N leadership has shown openness to review the draft amendment.

These discussions come at a critical time, as the government pushes for constitutional amendments that require the support of political allies. The MQM’s demand for local government empowerment is seen as a significant move, aimed at decentralizing power and improving governance at the grassroots level.

As talks progress, it is believed that both parties will reach a compromise and PML-N will have MQM’s support to move forward constitutional amendment. The outcome of the discussions at Bahadurabad will likely shape the future of local governance in Pakistan.

The political focus remains on Sunday’s meeting, where both parties will present their final positions.

28 Children Die in Karachi Amid Diphtheria Outbreak

KARACHI: As many as 28 children in Karachi have died from diphtheria this year, a Sindh health department official revealed on Saturday. The surge in deaths has been attributed to a shortage of Diphtheria Anti-Toxin (DAT), despite the disease being preventable through vaccination.

The official reported that so far, 166 cases of diphtheria have been documented in Sindh this year, with 28 deaths. The Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital (SIDH) has been handling all diphtheria cases. Last year, the hospital received 140 cases, 52 of which were fatal. Currently, more than 10 children are undergoing treatment at SIDH.

Experts Call for Improved Access to Antitoxin

Infectious disease experts have pointed out the dire lack of DAT, which costs approximately Rs250,000 per patient. “The only cure for diphtheria is full vaccination and treatment with antitoxin,” the experts emphasized. However, the unavailability of this lifesaving treatment across Sindh, including Karachi, has worsened the situation.

Corynebacterium diphtheriae lead to Diphtheria which is a serious bacterial infection. The bacteria produce toxins that can lead to respiratory complications, heart problems, and, in severe cases, death.

Read: New Study Reveals Link Between Long COVID and Blood Proteins

Vaccination as the Key to Prevention

Pakistani children are vaccinated against diphtheria as part of a five-in-one immunisation, which also protects against tetanus, whooping cough, hepatitis B, and Haemophilus influenzae type b. However, gaps in vaccination coverage persist.

Dr. Muhammad Arif Khan, Director of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI), stressed the importance of vaccination in preventing outbreaks. “Diphtheria is a life-threatening disease, and timely vaccination is the sole way to prevent fatal outcomes,” he stated.

The infection mainly affects the throat and upper respiratory tract. It forms a greyish-white membrane that can obstruct breathing and swallowing, making it particularly dangerous for children.

Continued Struggles with Diphtheria in Pakistan

While many countries have successfully eradicated diphtheria, Pakistan continues to face periodic outbreaks. Experts warn that the persistence of this deadly disease highlights the urgent need for better vaccination programs and improved healthcare infrastructure.

They are calling on health authorities to act quickly to ensure the availability of vaccines and DAT to prevent more deaths. The rise in diphtheria cases and fatalities has underscored the importance of swift and decisive action to protect vulnerable populations, particularly children.

FAA Approves SpaceX Falcon 9 Return to Flight After Investigation

WASHINGTON: The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approved SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket to return to flight on Friday. This came after the agency reviewed and accepted SpaceX’s investigation findings and corrective actions following a mishap on September 28.

Earlier, on September 30, the FAA had grounded the Falcon 9. It demanded SpaceX investigate why the second stage of the rocket malfunctioned after a NASA astronaut mission. The malfunction caused the booster to land in an unintended area of the Pacific Ocean, beyond the FAA-approved safety zone.

On Friday, the FAA announced it had officially closed the investigations into Falcon 9 mishaps. These included incidents involving SpaceX’s Starlink missions in July and August.

As a result, the FAA cleared Falcon 9 for its next mission, which is scheduled for Monday. The mission will launch the European Space Agency’s Hera spacecraft from Florida. This marks a significant moment for SpaceX as the Falcon 9 is its workhorse rocket, known for its reliability and multiple successful missions.

Transition to Starship 5 Launch

Meanwhile, a separate report by Reuters suggested the FAA may soon approve SpaceX’s license for Starship 5’s launch. The launch could take place as soon as this month. Starship 5 is the fifth test of SpaceX’s ambitious Starship system, designed to carry crew and cargo to orbit, the Moon, and beyond.

Starship, paired with its Super Heavy rocket, represents a fully reusable launch system. SpaceX aims to use it for missions that extend far beyond Earth, promising a revolution in space exploration.

Last month, the FAA indicated that the decision on the license for Starship 5 would not come before November. SpaceX, however, stated that the rocket has been ready for launch since August. The company hopes to launch the fifth test flight of Starship as early as this Sunday, though this depends on regulatory approval.

Elon Musk Criticizes FAA

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has not been shy in expressing his frustration with the FAA. Recently, he harshly criticized the agency for delaying the approval of Starship 5’s launch license. The tension has escalated with Musk even calling for the resignation of FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker. Moreover, Musk threatened to sue the agency for what he sees as unnecessary delays.

Adding to the conflict, the FAA proposed a $633,000 fine against SpaceX for launch issues. Musk argued that these delays are hampering SpaceX’s progress, especially as Starship plays a crucial role in the company’s future missions.

Despite these disputes, the FAA continues to stand by its review process. On Tuesday, the agency said it is still assessing the proposed Starship 5 mission. It reiterated that it would make a decision “once SpaceX has met all licensing requirements.”

As tensions rise, all eyes are on the FAA to see when it will finally greenlight the highly anticipated Starship 5 launch. For now, the focus is on Falcon 9’s return to flight and the upcoming Hera mission.
