World Mental Health Day is being observed globally today, including in Pakistan, with the aim of raising awareness about mental health issues. The day serves as a platform to encourage efforts in promoting mental well-being and to shed light on the challenges faced by people worldwide in accessing mental health care.
This year’s theme, highlighted by the World Health Organization (WHO), emphasizes the crucial link between mental health and the workplace. Safe and supportive work environments can positively impact mental health, while negative factors such as stigma, discrimination, harassment, and poor working conditions can harm both mental well-being and productivity.
WHO, along with its partners, is calling on governments, employers, workers’ organizations, and other stakeholders to collaborate in creating healthier workplaces. By prioritizing mental health at work, it is possible to improve not only individual quality of life but also overall participation and productivity in the workforce.
Stress and Anxiety Worsen Mental Health Disorders, Say Experts
Medical experts have linked stress, depression, and anxiety to the growing number of mental health disorders. They warn that these issues are quickly disrupting individuals’ daily routines, affecting their overall well-being.
Experts gathered at a seminar organized by the psychiatry department of Fatima Jinnah Medical University (FJMU) on Wednesday. The event aimed to raise awareness about mental health challenges in Pakistan, especially on World Mental Health Day. The country, like many developing nations, faces significant barriers to mental healthcare, including limited resources and widespread stigma.
Mental Health in Focus
The theme for World Mental Health Day 2024 is “Mental Health in the Workplace.” This year’s focus aims to highlight the importance of mental well-being at work. Experts stressed the need for prioritizing mental health globally, particularly in the workplace, where many face stress and pressure.
Prof Dr. Khalid Masood Gondal, Vice-Chancellor of FJMU, emphasized the crucial role mental health plays in allowing people to lead healthy, productive lives. He explained that timely diagnosis and treatment are essential to preventing mental disorders. However, he acknowledged that Pakistan faces major challenges in mental healthcare, primarily due to a lack of awareness and the stigma attached to mental health issues.
“Many people still believe that mental illness is caused by supernatural forces and seek help from spiritual healers instead of medical professionals,” Prof Gondal noted. He highlighted the FJMU’s efforts to address these misconceptions, adding that the university’s psychiatry department plays a pivotal role in tackling mental health issues. He also vowed to improve the department further.

The Workplace Impact
Retired Brigadier Prof Mowadat Hussain Rana discussed the importance of providing high-quality mental health services, particularly in the workplace. He noted that anxiety and depression are the most common mental disorders worldwide.
Prof Rana urged that students and employees should be given opportunities to brainstorm and develop essential life skills. This, he said, would help them cope with the challenges they face in the workplace.
Efforts to Improve Mental Health Services
Former Punjab Health Minister Prof Dr. Javed Akram praised the FJMU Student Counselling Centre, which supports students’ mental health needs. He highlighted the role of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, a leading teaching institution in Punjab, in providing mental health treatment.
Prof Akram stressed the importance of strengthening mental health institutions. He warned that mental health disorders significantly contribute to issues like suicide and social crime. “If mental health deteriorates, physical health will suffer as well,” he added, calling on the government to allocate more resources for mental health institutes.
Call for More Funding
The experts unanimously agreed that Pakistan needs to improve its mental healthcare system. They stressed that increasing awareness, removing stigma, and investing in mental health institutions are key to addressing the country’s growing mental health crisis.
The seminar concluded with a call for urgent government action, highlighting the need for increased funding to establish designated mental health facilities across the country.
