US Calls for Swift End to Israel-Hezbollah War

The United States called on Monday for an end to the Israel-Hezbollah war “as soon as possible.” Washington urged the enforcement of a UN resolution that requires Iran-backed Hezbollah to withdraw from southern Lebanon.

This appeal came as Israeli forces intensified their war in Lebanon, targeting a finance group linked to Hezbollah. They also continued to pound Gaza, a conflict that has lasted more than a year.

US envoy Amos Hochstein, in Beirut, said Washington wants the war in Lebanon to end quickly. He emphasized that tying Lebanon’s future to other regional conflicts is not in the interest of the Lebanese people. He referred to Hezbollah’s demand that any ceasefire in Lebanon must also involve an end to the war in Gaza.

Hochstein also pointed out that UN Security Council Resolution 1701 should be the foundation for a new ceasefire. This resolution ended the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war, but he said the parties had not fully implemented it.

Resolution 1701 stipulates that only the Lebanese army and the United Nations peacekeeping force (UNIFIL) should be stationed south of Lebanon’s Litani River near the Israeli border. However, Hezbollah remained in southern Lebanon and began launching cross-border strikes into Israel last year in support of Hamas.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is set to begin another Middle East tour in Israel on Tuesday. His mission is to push for a ceasefire in Gaza, as concerns of a wider war grow.

Israel, meanwhile, vowed to retaliate for an Iranian missile attack on October 1. This attack followed the killings of top militants, heightening tensions in the region.

On Monday, Israeli police arrested seven Israeli citizens accused of spying for Iranian intelligence. They allegedly gathered information on Israel’s military bases and energy infrastructure.

In Syria, the government reported that an Israeli airstrike killed two civilians in the capital Damascus. The strike hit an embassy district on Monday.

Israel expanded its war from Gaza to Lebanon last month. It aims to secure its northern border and allow displaced residents to return. Lebanon’s health ministry reported that an Israeli strike killed six people, including a child, in Baalbek on Monday.

Israel’s military chief, Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, said his forces had hit 30 targets linked to Hezbollah’s financial firm Al-Qard Al-Hassan. Israel accuses the firm of funding Hezbollah’s weapons. These strikes marked an escalation in Israel’s war with Hezbollah.

The United Nations Human Rights Office reported that the strikes caused extensive damage to civilian property and infrastructure. Lebanon’s National News Agency said Israeli forces also destroyed houses in Aita al-Shaab, a border village, during heavy clashes.

Hezbollah claimed it fired rockets at Israeli soldiers near the village. After nearly a month of fighting, at least 1,470 people have died in Lebanon, according to Lebanese health ministry figures.

In Gaza, the conflict began after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7 last year, killing 1,206 people. Israel’s retaliatory strikes have killed 42,603 people in Gaza, mostly civilians, according to figures from Gaza’s health ministry. The UN considers these figures reliable.

Officials Confirm a Dozen New Polio Cases in Pakistan

Polio is once again spreading in Pakistan. Officials report that more than 1 million children missed their vaccination doses last month. This situation highlights the ongoing challenges in eradicating one of the world’s most stubborn diseases. In October, Pakistani officials confirmed over a dozen new polio cases.

This brings the total number of infections this year to 39. Last year, the country reported only six cases. At that time, Pakistan seemed on the verge of eliminating the virus.

Ayesha Raza, the Focal Person to the Prime Minister on Polio Eradication, identified low vaccine uptake as the main reason for the recent increase in cases. She noted that around 1 million children missed their polio vaccinations in September. This missed opportunity has compounded a pre-existing immunity gap that grew during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Polio is a highly infectious viral disease that primarily affects children under five. It attacks the nervous system and can cause paralysis, respiratory issues, and even death. The disease spreads mainly through contaminated water or food. Although there is no cure, vaccination can prevent polio. Thanks to immunization campaigns, global polio cases have decreased by over 99% since the 1980s.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan are the only countries where polio remains endemic. Recently, the WHO warned of a resurgence of polio in Gaza after more than a year of conflict.

Distrust and Misinformation

In Pakistan, home to over 240 million people, vaccination programs face significant challenges. Historical distrust of foreign healthcare providers hampers efforts. Allegations surfaced that U.S. intelligence used a fake immunization program in Abbottabad to capture Osama bin Laden in 2011. This event heightened fears and skepticism regarding vaccination efforts.

Moreover, religious beliefs and a lack of awareness about polio’s dangers hinder public health initiatives. International NGOs and Pakistani authorities have worked hard to counter misinformation and vaccinate children. However, false information continues to circulate.

Recent cases of polio cluster in Balochistan province, which borders Afghanistan. Local officials report that parents hesitate to vaccinate their children due to prevalent misinformation and distrust of health workers. Many of the children infected had only received partial vaccinations. They did not complete all four required doses, as stated by Raza.

Reported cases are likely to rise further as Pakistan enhances its surveillance efforts. Raza stated, “A lot of work is being done to fill the gaps that we’ve missed in the past.”

The uptick in polio cases coincides with an increase in violent attacks on vaccination clinics. Militants have targeted anti-polio campaigns in Pakistan for decades. Some falsely claim that vaccines serve as a Western conspiracy to sterilize children.

This year, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province experienced 27 attacks on polio workers, according to a CNN tally confirmed by police sources. In September, armed militants killed a police officer protecting a vaccination site in Bannu. Protests erupted following this incident. Additionally, a police officer and a polio worker were killed in a separate shooting in Bajaur.

Impact of Community Boycotts

Aftab Kakar, a representative for the Emergency Operation Center in Balochistan, highlighted that protests, insecurity, and community boycotts disrupt vaccine campaigns. These issues leave behind children who could sustain virus transmission. Health workers typically mark children’s fingers to indicate vaccination. However, some children have been incorrectly marked as vaccinated when they were not, Kakar noted.

Champions League Showdown: Real Madrid vs Borussia Dortmund

This week in the Champions League, Europe’s top clubs face off, with Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund set to clash in a highly anticipated rematch of last season’s final. Fans are eager for another thrilling encounter between Spain’s finest and German soccer royalty. The game will be held on Tuesday, marking a key moment in the group stages.

On Wednesday, Barcelona will host Bayern Munich in another significant match. The rivalry between these two clubs has been largely one-sided in recent years, with Bayern dominating their head-to-heads. As Europe’s top club competition unfolds, all four teams have had mixed starts in this season’s revamped format.

Dortmund’s Dominance and Madrid’s Setback

Dortmund has been in top form in the Champions League so far. They’ve secured victories in both of their opening matches, defeating Club Brugge 3-0 and thrashing Celtic 7-1 at home. This strong start has made Dortmund the early leader and top scorer in the league stage, where each of the 36 teams plays eight matches—four at home and four away.

However, despite their European success, Dortmund’s domestic performance has been inconsistent. After demolishing Celtic, they faced a 1-0 loss to Union Berlin in the Bundesliga, showing the team’s struggles to maintain momentum across competitions.

On the other hand, Real Madrid suffered a surprising 1-0 defeat to Lille in their last Champions League match. This loss marked Madrid’s first defeat in the competition since the semifinals of the 2022-23 season. Now, Madrid is seeking to regain form as they prepare to face a strong Dortmund side.

Bayern Looks to Extend Dominance Over Barcelona

Bayern Munich is headed to Barcelona in search of another victory. The German giants have won their last six encounters against Barcelona, including a shocking 8-2 demolition in the 2020 quarterfinals. Now under the leadership of former Bayern coach Hansi Flick, Barcelona aims to reverse their fortunes in this long-standing rivalry.

Bayern’s recent form in the Champions League has been solid, though they suffered a rare 1-0 loss to Aston Villa in their previous match, ending their unbeaten run under new coach Vincent Kompany. This upcoming match will test both teams’ resilience and ability to bounce back.

Manchester City Chases Champions League Record

If Manchester City defeats Sparta Prague on Wednesday, they will set a new Champions League record for the longest unbeaten streak. City is currently tied with Manchester United’s 25-match unbeaten run, set by Alex Ferguson’s team between 2007 and 2009. Pep Guardiola’s City has been undefeated since their 3-1 loss to Real Madrid in the 2022 semifinals.

Since then, City has won 17 matches and drawn eight, including their victorious 2022-2023 campaign. A win over Prague would solidify their dominance in European football and make history.

Brest’s Surprising Start

Of the seven teams with maximum points, French underdog Brest is the most surprising. Making their European debut after a third-place finish in Ligue 1, Brest has already stunned the competition. A 2-1 win over Sturm Graz and a 4-0 victory against Salzburg have put Brest on the map.

Next, they face a tougher challenge in German champions Bayer Leverkusen. However, Brest will play their home game in Guingamp, 114 kilometers away, as their stadium doesn’t meet UEFA standards.

The Champions League promises more drama as the competition heats up with these crucial matches.

Pennsylvania Mom Asks Trump Not to Let U.S. Become Brazil

Former President Donald Trump surprised customers, on Sunday, by working the drive-thru window at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania. As he handed out orders, one customer, Nayara Andrejczyk, made a heartfelt plea. “Mr. President, please don’t let the U.S. become Brazil, my native Brazil, please,” she said. Trump, smiling, responded, “We’re gonna make it better than ever.”

Trump’s McDonald’s Visit Goes Viral

A video of the interaction quickly went viral. Trump was seen cooking fries and serving customers, while also taking a jab at his 2024 opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, who claimed to have worked at a McDonald’s in her youth. Andrejczyk’s brief interaction, however, captured the internet’s attention.

In an interview the next day on Fox News’ “The Story,” Andrejczyk explained her comment. She moved to the U.S. from Brazil 26 years ago because of the corruption that plagued her homeland. “My parents were victims of Brazilian government corruption. My mom lost a successful business,” she said. That loss drove her family to seek a better life in the U.S.

Fear of Corruption in the U.S.

Andrejczyk expressed gratitude for America and her fear of it going down a similar path as Brazil. “I love this country. I don’t want to see it become the corrupt sewage that Brazil is now, where politicians have no accountability to the people,” she stated. Her remarks reflect the growing concern among some Americans about the state of politics and corruption.

Surprised by Trump’s Appearance

Andrejczyk had been invited to a Trump campaign event, but she was unaware Trump would be working the drive-thru window. “There was no stunt,” she said, adding, “It was a great surprise to see him there. He’s very charismatic and relatable.”

Despite the brief interaction, Andrejczyk felt as if she had met a friend. She described Trump as genuine, noting how he made direct eye contact and greeted her children in the back seat. “He looked us in the eye… It was incredible. My kids said, ‘I can’t believe I shook Donald Trump’s hand.’ He’s a genuine man,” she added.

Trump’s McDonald’s Visit Sparks Debate

While many enjoyed the lighthearted moment, Trump critics labeled the event as “staged.” However, Trump’s supporters were quick to point out the necessary security precautions. Trump, who has faced two assassination attempts in recent weeks, cannot simply walk into a McDonald’s without security.

Senator JD Vance, Trump’s running mate, defended the visit during an interview on Fox News. “The president has to have security because there have been two attempts on his life in the last eight weeks,” he said, dismissing accusations that the visit was overly staged.

Trump’s Promise to Make America Better

Throughout the visit, Trump praised the McDonald’s staff, including the branch manager, and reiterated his commitment to improving the country. As he served fries and greeted customers, he promised to make America better if elected president again.

This unique event gave Trump supporters a glimpse of a more personal side of the former president, while also drawing criticism from his opponents. Nevertheless, Andrejczyk’s plea reflected the concerns of many who fear the direction in which the U.S. may be heading.

Hezbollah Rocket Attack Injures One in Northern Israel

A Hezbollah rocket attack injured a man in northern Israel. Reports from multiple Israeli media outlets confirm this incident occurred in the town of Ma’agan Michael. The Magen David Adom ambulance service reported that falling interceptor fragments caused the injuries.

In addition to the injuries, several vehicles and a residential building sustained damage. Falling shrapnel from intercepted rockets struck the northern Israeli town. Hezbollah launched medium-range rockets targeting northern Israel and Tel Aviv early in the morning. Sirens sounded across the affected areas, alerting residents to the threat.

The Israeli army responded swiftly. They reported multiple instances of hostile aircraft sirens in the targeted regions. This incident marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

Israeli Drone Attack in Gaza

In a separate incident, the Israeli military conducted a drone strike in Beit Lahiya, located in northern Gaza. According to the Wafa news agency, this attack resulted in the deaths of at least 15 Palestinians. Among the dead are women and children, with many others injured.

Hezbollah also claimed responsibility for attacking the “Stella Maris” naval base. This facility lies northwest of the coastal city of Haifa. Additionally, Hezbollah posted a photo on its Telegram channel, indicating a missile strike north of Caesarea, where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu resides. However, Hezbollah did not explicitly claim this attack.

Earlier reports indicated that Hezbollah had targeted the Glilot military base near Tel Aviv. They launched a missile salvo in this attack and appeared to execute a second strike on a suburb of Tel Aviv.

State of Emergency Declared

In response to the escalating violence, Israeli authorities declared a state of emergency in the Tel Aviv area. Fortunately, no casualties were reported from these attacks. The barrage of rockets aimed at Tel Aviv and Haifa highlighted the intensity of the situation.

For the first time, medium-range rockets were used from this direction. Minutes later, air raid sirens blared in Tel Aviv. Consequently, air traffic at Ben Gurion Airport came to a complete halt. The Israeli military announced emergency measures across the Tel Aviv area.

Witnesses reported around 12 medium-range rockets launched toward Haifa and Tel Aviv. This attack serves as a significant signal from Hezbollah. Despite ongoing conflicts, they still possess considerable military capabilities.

Further Attacks and No Reported Injuries

Hezbollah also announced that it bombed the Glilot military base, which is associated with Israel’s intelligence unit 8200. They described this attack as a “qualitative missile salvo.” Earlier, they indicated that missiles struck the Nirit area in the Tel Aviv suburbs, resulting in large explosions.

The Israeli military confirmed that there have been no casualties reported from these recent attacks. The situation remains tense as both sides prepare for potential further escalation.

The recent rocket attacks by Hezbollah mark a significant development in the ongoing conflict. The injury of a civilian in Israel and the deaths of Palestinians in Gaza underscore the toll of this violence. As tensions continue to rise, both Israel and Hezbollah remain on high alert.

McDonald’s Inadvertently Thrust Into 2024 Election Spotlight

McDonald’s found itself at the center of the 2024 election after former President Donald Trump served fries at a Pennsylvania location over the weekend. However, the company made it clear that it had no role in organizing the visit.

McDonald’s operates through a franchise model, meaning that most locations are independently owned. Although franchise owners follow corporate guidelines, they can invite political figures without McDonald’s involvement. In an internal memo obtained by CNN, McDonald’s stated that it had not invited Trump and did not seek the political attention.

The memo, signed by McDonald’s U.S. leadership team, emphasized that the company does not endorse political candidates. “McDonald’s does not endorse candidates for elected office and that remains true in this race for the next President. We are not red or blue – we are golden,” the memo read.

Trump’s Love for McDonald’s

The memo also acknowledged Trump’s well-known affection for McDonald’s. During his visit, Trump served fries and greeted customers at the Feasterville-Trevose location. His stop became a viral moment, but some criticized McDonald’s for allowing the event. However, McDonald’s clarified that the franchise owner, Derek Giacomantonio, had been approached by local law enforcement about Trump’s visit, and he agreed to host it.

“He was proud to highlight how he and his team serve their local community and make delicious food, like our World-Famous French Fries,” the company said. McDonald’s defended the decision by stating that one of its core values is inclusivity: “We open our doors to everyone.”

Franchise Model and Past Controversies

McDonald’s franchise model is crucial to its operations, with 95% of its locations independently operated. Franchise owners use McDonald’s brand and pay royalties for access to corporate expertise.

However, the company has faced challenges with franchisees in the past. For example, after a McDonald’s operator in Israel offered discounts to soldiers following Hamas’ October 7 attack, boycotts erupted in Muslim-majority countries, impacting the company’s earnings. Similarly, Starbucks faced backlash last year when some franchises opted not to display Pride flags, despite the company’s public support for LGBTQ+ rights.

McDonald’s Approach to Political Events

In the memo, McDonald’s highlighted its use of “election toolkits” to navigate politically sensitive events. The company reiterated that it strives to stay neutral in elections, maintaining its focus on serving all customers, regardless of political affiliations. The memo underscored that McDonald’s brand resonates with millions of Americans, making it a common ground during contentious times.

Despite the mixed reactions to Trump’s visit, McDonald’s remains a key part of American culture. The company’s response highlighted its intention to remain neutral while acknowledging the complex dynamics that franchise owners face when hosting high-profile events.

Australian Lawmaker Confronts British Royals: “Not My King”

Britain’s King Charles III visited Australia on Monday to address the nation’s leaders, but the event took a sharp turn when an Indigenous senator voiced her opposition. Independent Senator Lidia Thorpe, from the back of the room, shouted, “You are not my king. Give us our land back, give us what you stole,” just after the King’s speech.

Security officers quickly escorted her away. Thorpe’s outburst came during the royal couple’s visit to Canberra. They were meeting Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and other officials at Parliament House.

King Charles Acknowledges First Nations People

In his speech, King Charles acknowledged the deep connection of Australia’s First Nations people to the land. He spoke about the rich cultural exchanges he had experienced with them over the years. Charles mentioned the Aboriginal people, who had lived on the land for thousands of years before the British arrived in the 18th century.

However, Thorpe, a Djab Wurrung Gunnai Gunditjmara woman, has long been a critic of the British monarchy. She advocates for a treaty to be made with Australia’s Indigenous people, who, according to her, never ceded sovereignty.

Thorpe’s protest isn’t her first. In 2022, she referred to Queen Elizabeth II as a “colonizer” during her swearing-in ceremony. This time, Thorpe stood in protest during the recital of “God Save the King,” turning her back to the king while wearing a traditional possum-fur coat.

The Greens party, with which Thorpe was previously affiliated, supported her stance. Senator Dorinda Cox, a Yamatji Noongar woman, said King Charles needs to support “First Nations justice and truth-telling.” Cox called for clear action from the monarchy in addressing the trauma left by British colonialism.

Response from Monarchist Supporters

Royal supporters, however, expressed disappointment in Thorpe’s actions. The Australian Monarchist League demanded her resignation, calling her demonstration “childish.”

Despite the protest, King Charles and Queen Camilla continued their visit without addressing the controversy. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, when asked about the incident, praised King Charles, stating he was doing a “fantastic job,” especially considering his health challenges.

The royal couple’s trip marked King Charles III’s first visit to Australia as monarch and came after his cancer diagnosis earlier in the year. His schedule has been lighter than usual, following medical advice.

Among Monday’s activities, Charles and Camilla met with supporters in Canberra, including one memorable encounter with an alpaca named Hephner, who sneezed on the king. The king’s tour also included planting trees at Parliament House to highlight his commitment to environmental issues.

Next, the royal couple is set to visit Sydney for a public reception outside the iconic Opera House before flying to Samoa for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

26th Constitutional Amendment Bill Sets Deadline for Interest-Free Banking by 2028

The recently passed 26th Constitutional Amendment Bill, 2024, has set a firm deadline of January 1, 2028, to eliminate interest-based banking (Riba) in Pakistan. The decision reflects a major shift towards an Islamic banking system, in line with religious principles. Moreover, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), led by Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman, played a pivotal role in pushing for this amendment.

Amendment to Article 38 Clause (f)

The Senate approved a crucial amendment to clause (f) of Article 38, which focuses on promoting social and economic well-being. Previously, the clause stated that the government should eliminate Riba “as early as possible.” The new wording sets a specific target: to abolish Riba “as far as practicable, by the 1st of January, 2028.” This adjustment marks a significant policy change, offering a clear deadline to phase out interest-based financial systems in the country.

Federal Shariat Court’s Ruling on Riba

The Federal Shariat Court had already issued a ruling in 2022, giving the government five years to implement an Islamic, interest-free banking system. Justice Dr. Syed Muhammad Anwer, leading a three-member bench, declared that the abolition of Riba is fundamental to an Islamic economic system. Therefore, the court made it clear that all transactions involving Riba are unlawful under Islamic law, including interest on government loans.

The court’s ruling emphasized that Riba must be eliminated not just from private sector banking, but also from public sector transactions. Thus, it includes loans from international institutions like the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. The court firmly stated that all such transactions must be interest-free to comply with Islamic principles.

State Bank of Pakistan’s Response and Action Plan

In response to the Federal Shariat Court’s ruling, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has been working to transition the country’s banking system towards Shariah compliance. According to the SBP Governor’s Report for 2023-24, the bank has taken steps to establish a digital retail Islamic bank and promote Shariah-compliant digital banking through Islamic window operations. The SBP is working closely with the government and other stakeholders to implement the court’s judgment.

A high-level “Committee for the Transformation of Conventional Banking into Islamic” has been formed to oversee this transition. The committee is reviewing existing domestic laws and aligning them with international best practices. The SBP is also assessing the current regulatory framework and conducting awareness sessions to educate stakeholders on Islamic banking and finance.

Moving Towards an Interest-Free Economy

The shift to an interest-free banking system is a significant challenge for Pakistan’s economy. However, the government and the SBP wants to ensure smooth implementation of the new system by the 2028 deadline. Thus, with clear guidance from the Federal Shariat Court and a coordinated effort among key institutions, Pakistan will become one of the few countries to fully transition to an Islamic banking model, free of interest-based transactions.

This transformation can reshape the country’s financial landscape, bringing it in line with Islamic economic principles.

India and China Reach Agreement to End Four-Year Military Stand-off

India and China have finalized a deal to resume patrolling along their disputed border, effectively ending a four-year military stand-off, according to Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. This agreement paves the way for improving political and economic relations between the two Asian giants.

The announcement comes just before Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Russia for the BRICS summit from October 22-24, where he may meet Chinese President Xi Jinping, according to Indian officials.

Disengagement After Deadly Clashes

Relations between the nuclear-armed neighbors have been tense since a violent clash in 2020 along the undemarcated border in the western Himalayas. The incident resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers. Since then, both sides halted patrols at several key points along the border in the Ladakh region to avoid further conflicts, while each moved tens of thousands of troops and military equipment to the region.

“We have reached an agreement on patrolling, returning to the pre-2020 status quo, and we can now say the disengagement process is complete,” Jaishankar said during a media conclave. He emphasized that restoring peace at the border was essential for broader relations to move forward.

Read: Former Indian Official Charged in U.S. for Alleged Murder Plot

Agreed Patrolling Schedule to Avoid Clashes

To prevent future confrontations, both militaries will patrol disputed areas according to an agreed schedule, according to a senior Indian military officer. Regular monitoring and review meetings will be conducted to ensure compliance with the agreement and avoid violations in the contested Ladakh region.

Although China has not yet responded to the announcement, officials in New Delhi said the agreement clears the way for a possible bilateral meeting between Modi and Xi on the sidelines of the BRICS summit. This would mark their first meeting since the border clashes in 2020.

Confidence-Building and Trade Impact

Both sides will also pull back troops slightly from their current positions to minimize the risk of face-offs. Retired senior Indian army officer Deependra Singh Hooda, who previously commanded forces along the China border, acknowledged that further confidence-building measures are necessary.

The four-year standoff had strained business ties between the two nations, with India tightening its scrutiny of Chinese investments and halting major projects. This increased regulatory barriers for Chinese firms like BYD and Great Wall Motor, discouraging billions of dollars in potential investment.

However, despite the tensions, India’s imports from China have surged by 56% since the 2020 clashes, nearly doubling its trade deficit with China to $85 billion. China remains India’s largest supplier of industrial goods.

When asked about the impact of the new agreement on trade and investment, Jaishankar said: “It has just happened. There will be meetings to discuss next steps. I wouldn’t jump to conclusions just yet.”

Fethullah Gulen, Turkish Cleric Accused of 2016 Coup Attempt, Dies at 83

Fethullah Gulen, the U.S.-based cleric who built an influential Islamic movement in Turkey and beyond, has died at the age of 83. Gulen, who had lived in self-imposed exile in the United States since 1999, passed away on Sunday in a U.S. hospital, according to Herkul, a website that publishes his sermons.

From Ally to Foe of Erdogan

Once a close ally of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, Gulen’s relationship with the Turkish leader deteriorated over time. Erdogan accused Gulen of orchestrating the failed coup attempt in 2016, during which rogue military forces used warplanes, tanks, and helicopters in a bid to seize power. The coup resulted in the deaths of around 250 people.

While Gulen denied involvement in the coup, the Turkish government designated his movement, known as “Hizmet” (meaning “service”), as a terrorist organization. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan confirmed Gulen’s death and reiterated the government’s commitment to continuing its fight against the group. “Our nation’s determination in the fight against terrorism will continue,” Fidan said.

Gulen’s Movement and Its Global Reach

Gulen’s Hizmet movement aimed to promote a moderate form of Islam, emphasizing Western-style education, free markets, and interfaith dialogue. His influence expanded through a network of schools, businesses, and media outlets in Turkey and abroad, reaching as far as Central Asia, the Balkans, Africa, and the West.

Known to his followers as “Hodjaefendi” (respected teacher), Gulen was born in 1941 in the eastern Turkish province of Erzurum. The son of an imam, he began studying the Koran as a child and rose to prominence in the 1960s as a preacher in Izmir, where he established student dormitories and developed an informal network that would later become his movement.

Erdogan’s Crackdown After the Coup

Gulen’s movement came under intense scrutiny after the 2016 coup attempt. Erdogan’s government launched a wide-scale crackdown, arresting at least 77,000 people and suspending 150,000 accused state workers, including teachers, judges, and soldiers, linked to Gulen’s network. Hundreds of schools, businesses, and media outlets associated with the movement shut down, with assets seized by the state.

Gulen condemned the coup attempt, stating, “As someone who suffered under multiple military coups, it is especially insulting to be accused of any link to such an attempt.” However, the Turkish government continued to view his movement as a grave threat to the state, describing it as “a cancer” that needed to be rooted out.

Gulen’s Legacy and Extradition Efforts

Gulen’s movement also faced criticism from Turkey’s secular opposition, which saw it as undermining the country’s secular foundations. Ankara repeatedly sought Gulen’s extradition from the United States, but those efforts were unsuccessful.

In a 2017 interview from his compound in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains, Gulen expressed no intention of fleeing the U.S. to avoid extradition. At the time, he appeared frail, with his doctor by his side. Gulen’s death marks the end of a controversial chapter in Turkish politics, as the country continues its fight against his legacy.

Pakistan Navy Seizes Large Cache of Indian-Made Drugs

RAWALPINDI: The Pakistan Navy successfully seized a massive cache of narcotics in a high-profile anti-narcotics operation. The news was confirmed by the military’s media wing on Monday. The operation led to the confiscation of Indian-made narcotic pills and a large quantity of drugs.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the Pakistan Navy confiscated 2,000 kilograms of hashish, 370 kilograms of ice, and 50 kilograms of heroin during the operation. The estimated value of the seized drugs in the international market is a staggering $145 million. These drugs have since been handed over to the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) for further action.

The Pakistan Navy has reiterated its commitment to actively safeguard the maritime boundaries of the region and prevent illegal activities, including drug trafficking.

Recent Joint Operations

This operation follows a series of successful anti-narcotics missions. Last week, the Pakistan Navy, in collaboration with the Combined Task Force 150 (CTF 150), seized another large haul of narcotics in the North Arabian Sea. This joint effort involved multiple naval forces and underscored the importance of international cooperation in combating illegal drug trade.

The focused operation was carried out by Pakistan Navy’s ship PNS Zulfiquar and the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency’s ship Kolachi. They were joined by the US Navy’s ship USS Abraham Lincoln, demonstrating the strength of joint military efforts in securing maritime boundaries. Aircraft from the coast guard and the Pakistan Navy also provided aerial support to the operation.

As a result of these coordinated efforts, 1.3 tons of hashish, worth an estimated $26 million, was confiscated during the operation.

Pakistan Navy Takes Command of CTF 150

Pakistan Navy recently assumed command of the Combined Task Force 150 (CTF 150), a multinational naval task force aimed at curbing illegal activities in international waters. The task force focuses on ensuring maritime security, countering drug trafficking, and preventing other illicit activities in the region.

This leadership role demonstrates Pakistan Navy’s growing importance in international maritime operations. As a key player in promoting regional security, the Pakistan Navy remains vigilant against all kinds of illegal activities, including drug smuggling, in the Arabian Sea and beyond.

Commitment to Maritime Securtity

The Pakistan Navy’s recent successes highlight its ongoing dedication to maintaining peace and security in the region’s waters. Through continuous surveillance, cooperation with international forces, and timely operations, the Pakistan Navy remains on the frontline of preventing illegal activities, from drug trafficking to other forms of smuggling.

These recent operations, along with the Navy’s leadership of CTF 150, signal a strengthened resolve in securing maritime routes and keeping the region free from illegal activities. With large-scale drug hauls and successful joint operations, the Pakistan Navy continues to play a critical role in safeguarding Pakistan’s maritime interests.

As the battle against drug trafficking intensifies, the Navy’s proactive stance ensures that the region’s waters remain safe and secure. The seized narcotics have dealt a significant blow to international drug traffickers, further solidifying Pakistan’s position as a key player in the fight against illegal trade.

How 26th Constitutional Amendment will Alter Pakistan’s Legal Landscape

On a significant note, the Senate of Pakistan passed an amendment bill with a two-thirds majority on Sunday. This was swiftly followed by the National Assembly’s approval with an equivalent majority early on Monday morning. This marks a pivotal moment in Pakistan’s legislative history, particularly regarding the judiciary, as it aims to implement comprehensive reforms to enhance the judicial process and ensure a more accountable system.

Previous Attempts and Challenges

Interestingly, this was not the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)’s first attempt to introduce these amendments. A previous effort in September failed as the PML-N struggled to garner support from the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), leading to the legislation not being tabled even with both houses in session.

In response to these setbacks, a special parliamentary committee was established last month, encompassing representatives from all political parties, including the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). This committee diligently discussed various proposals over the past few weeks, showcasing a rare instance of collaborative governance.

Mediating Roles and Opposition Concerns

Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the chief of the JUI-F, played a crucial mediating role during these discussions. He addressed opposition concerns about the proposed amendments and alleged intimidation of lawmakers who were supportive of the draft. A particularly contentious issue was the proposed establishment of a Federal Constitutional Court, which the PTI vehemently opposed. Instead, Fazl advocated for the inclusion of a constitutional bench, which has now been incorporated into the act.

While the JUI-F had reached an agreement on a draft with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) earlier this month, the PTI chose to boycott the voting process despite stating that it had “no objections” to the final draft. The initial proposal had suggested 56 amendments, but after extensive negotiations, the number was streamlined to 27 in the version ultimately passed by the National Assembly.

Key Amendments and Their Implications

The newly passed amendments are poised to come into effect immediately, and they encompass various crucial changes. Among these, the most significant adjustments pertain to Article 175A, which governs the appointment of judges to the Supreme Court, high courts, and the Federal Shariat Court (FSC).

Appointment of the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP)

One of the landmark changes is the amendment to clause 3 of Article 175A, which alters the appointment process of the Chief Justice of Pakistan. Instead of the president appointing the “most senior judge of the Supreme Court,” the new process will involve a nomination by a Special Parliamentary Committee from among the three most senior judges of the Supreme Court. The committee will then send the nominee’s name to the prime minister, who will forward it to the president for formal appointment.

Furthermore, the earlier provision, which allowed the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) to forward nominations to an eight-member parliamentary committee, has been amended to ensure that the JCP sends its nominations directly to the prime minister.

In addition, a new clause mandates that the Special Parliamentary Committee shall consist of twelve members, with proportional representation based on party strength in Parliament. The committee must send its nominations within 14 days before the CJP’s retirement, ensuring a more structured and timely appointment process.

Limiting the CJP’s Term

Another significant reform introduced is the limitation of the Chief Justice’s term to a maximum of three years. This amendment to Article 179 stipulates that the CJP shall hold office until they reach 65 years of age, but must retire after three years, even if they have not reached the age limit. This change aims to introduce a sense of accountability and prevent the concentration of power within the judiciary.

Changes to Judicial Powers

The amendments also impact the Supreme Court’s original jurisdiction under Article 184. A new provision states that the Supreme Court shall no longer exercise suo motu powers beyond the content of any application filed under this clause. This is a critical development, as it seeks to regulate the apex court’s authority and prevent overreach.

Additionally, Article 186A has been modified to empower the Supreme Court to transfer cases from high courts to itself or to any other high court, if deemed necessary for the sake of justice.

Conclusion: A Progressive Step Forward

The passage of these amendments is a significant stride toward reforming Pakistan’s judiciary, reflecting a collective commitment from various political factions to enhance judicial accountability and efficiency. While challenges remain, the collaborative efforts of parties like the JUI-F and the PPP, alongside the constructive engagement of the opposition, signal a potential shift towards more inclusive governance. As these amendments come into force, their practical implications will be closely monitored, with the hope that they will lead to a more transparent and responsive judicial system in Pakistan.

BJP Councillor Navya Haridas Surprised by Bypoll Ticket

BJP councillor Navya Haridas expressed her surprise at receiving a ticket for the high-profile Wayanad Lok Sabha bypoll. She will face Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in the upcoming election.

“I got an official confirmation only after my ticket was announced on news channels,” Navya shared with The Indian Express. “I had a hint that my name was included in the list of probable candidates, but I did not expect to be picked.”

Navya, 39, currently serves as a councillor in the Kozhikode municipal corporation and is the state general secretary of the BJP’s mahila morcha, or women’s wing.

Her journey into politics has been unconventional. An engineering graduate, Navya initially worked as a software professional with HSBC Bank for two and a half years. In 2009, she married marine engineer Shobin Shyam and moved to Singapore, where she continued her career in various software firms.

Navya’s family has long been associated with the Sangh Parivar. Growing up, she often saw RSS meetings held in her family home in Kozhikode. She recalls participating in RSS student activities, but she never envisioned a political career.

Everything changed during a trip back to Kozhikode in 2015. “I had returned for a short vacation with my children. It was election time, and the BJP approached me with a ticket due to my family’s Sangh Parivar background,” she explained. The party fielded her from the general seat in the municipal corporation. “Overnight, I became the candidate. My plan was to return to Singapore if I lost,” she added.

However, Navya never returned to her corporate life. She won her first election in 2015 and successfully retained her seat in 2020. Her unexpected rise in politics showcases the shifting dynamics within the BJP, especially in a constituency that has traditionally leaned towards the Congress party.

Navya’s Candidacy, a Bold Move

As the Wayanad Lok Sabha bypoll approaches, Navya’s candidacy is viewed as a bold move by the BJP to challenge the political status quo in the region. With Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as her opponent, the contest is set to be highly competitive and closely watched.

Navya’s background in technology and her grassroots political experience position her uniquely for this election. Her supporters highlight her ability to connect with the youth and her commitment to women’s empowerment.

“I aim to represent the voices of the people of Wayanad. I want to bring issues affecting women and youth to the forefront,” she stated.

With her unexpected nomination, Navya Haridas is ready to embark on this new chapter in her political career. As she prepares for the battle ahead, her journey from software professional to politician exemplifies the unpredictable nature of politics and the opportunities it can create.

The people of Wayanad will soon see how Navya’s story unfolds as she campaigns against a formidable opponent like Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. The stakes are high, and the outcome remains uncertain, but Navya is determined to make her mark.

KP Chief Minister Issues Warning Over Constitutional Amendment

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has issued a stern warning to those associated with the 26th constitutional amendment. He declared that anyone who supported or voted for the amendment will face consequences.

“We won’t spare anyone aligned with the government, regardless of whether they cast a vote,” he stated during his address to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on Monday.

Gandapur strongly criticized the amendment, labeling it as unconstitutional and beneficial only to the elite. He asserted that the judiciary is now under the control of this elite class. “This government, which lacks a legitimate mandate, has attacked the judiciary,” he said. He emphasized that his party aims to reclaim its mandate through public support and then reject such amendments.

Ongoing Political Struggle

During his speech, Gandapur highlighted the ongoing political struggle, referring to it as a “battle of ideologies.” He stated that while some may try to force them to retreat, they have identified “traitors, cowards, and corrupt individuals” in this challenging time. He affirmed their commitment to stand firm in their beliefs, saying, “We will continue to stand firm, God willing.”

Gandapur pledged to expose those who betrayed former Prime Minister Imran Khan. He promised to reveal the names of those who voted for or supported the government by the end of the night. “Traitors are traitors, whether motivated by necessity or money. If someone was under pressure, they should have resigned. Why didn’t they?” he questioned.

He vowed to hold accountable those who changed their loyalties for personal gain. “The nation will take them to task, and so will we. If anyone thinks they can easily get away with this, they are mistaken.”

Gandapur also warned that if the senior-most judge is not appointed chief justice, they will once again take to the streets in protest. He delivered a pointed message to state institutions, saying, “I am openly telling all decision-making bodies that you are accountable. You cannot act in this country without being questioned, nor can you silence everyone.”

Gandapur Critiques NAB’s Role

Regarding the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), he criticized the institution for achieving nothing but political revenge. He claimed that “hundreds of billions of the public’s money have been wasted, and the result has been nothing but political victimization.”

Gandapur lamented that Pakistan’s economic troubles, including its mounting debts, result from poor policies and unconstitutional amendments. “When you appoint people of your choice and have them make decisions, those institutions can never progress,” he remarked, using the country’s financial struggles as evidence.

Earlier, President Asif Ali Zardari officially approved the 26th constitutional amendment, which became law following its publication in the official gazette. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif lauded the unanimous passage of the amendment, calling it a “shining example of national consensus.” He emphasized that this marks the end of the era of dismissing elected prime ministers and expressed gratitude to key political figures for their efforts in advancing the country’s best interests.

Gerry Hutch Considers Election Bid to Unseat McDonald

Prominent gangland figure Gerry Hutch is considering a run for the upcoming general election in an attempt to unseat Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald. Hutch, aged 61, is exploring the possibility of running as an independent candidate in Dublin Central, a constituency that includes the north inner city, where he grew up.

Hutch was acquitted last year of organizing the Regency Hotel gun attack, a violent event that intensified the Hutch-Kinahan feud. Over the past week, rumors have circulated that Hutch might make a bid for a Dáil seat. Local sources confirmed on Sunday that he has been seriously considering entering the race for several weeks and is close to making a decision.

One source close to the Hutch family stated that his primary motivation is to take votes away from Sinn Féin. The party is currently facing a decline in the polls, along with several controversies. Mary Lou McDonald, who topped the poll in Dublin Central in 2020 with 35% of first-preference votes, is now facing potential challenges to her re-election.

Hutch’s animosity towards Sinn Féin stems from the Regency trial. During the trial, former Sinn Féin member Jonathan Dowdall claimed Hutch had orchestrated the 2016 attack to kill rival Daniel Kinahan. However, the Special Criminal Court dismissed Dowdall’s testimony after catching him in several lies. Hutch was acquitted of murder, though the court acknowledged his connection to the weapons used in the attack.

Hutch has a criminal record with 30 previous convictions and is suspected to be behind some of Ireland’s largest robberies. Despite his notorious background, he has a significant following in the north inner city, particularly due to his work with Corinthians Boxing Club, where Olympic champion Kelly Harrington trained.

Hutch’s Ambitions Remain Uncertain

It is unclear if Hutch believes he can win a Dáil seat or if he plans to run as a spoiler candidate to damage Sinn Féin’s prospects. While he enjoys strong support in his home neighborhood, a political source noted that he lacks a broad base of support in other parts of the constituency, such as Cabra, Drumcondra, and Phibsborough. The source added, “He hasn’t a hope of getting enough votes outside of his home turf.”

Still, some believe it is possible that Hutch could take enough votes from McDonald to affect her re-election chances, particularly given Sinn Féin’s current difficulties. “There’s certainly an element of revenge to it,” said another source close to the family.

Speculation About Candidacy

Despite speculation about his candidacy, members of the Hutch family did not comment on Sunday. Gerry Hutch currently splits his time between Dublin and Lanzarote, Spain. He remains a regular visitor to the north inner city, where many of his family and friends still reside.

It is not yet known if Hutch plans to run a traditional campaign involving posters and door-to-door canvassing. Any such campaign would likely raise security concerns. Hutch has survived several assassination attempts in the past, and gardaí have previously warned him about threats to his life.

However, the threat to Hutch has diminished in recent years. He now moves around Dublin with no visible protection. A Garda source stated, “He will receive the same treatment as anyone else. If a threat is uncovered, he will be advised and told to take appropriate measures.”

Qasim showcased his power-hitting skills, smashing three sixes and two boundaries during his 38-ball knock. He was dismissed just shy of a half-century when Oman’s Samay Shrivastava bowled him out with the score at 106-4 in 13.3 overs. At 116-5 in 14.5 overs, Rohail Nazir, playing his first match of the tournament, joined Arafat Minhas at the crease. The pair put on a remarkable 69-run unbeaten partnership for the sixth wicket, boosting the Shaheens to their highest total of the tournament. Rohail dazzled with a 20-ball 41, hitting three fours and two sixes, while Arafat’s 15-ball 31 included two boundaries and two sixes. The duo’s late surge saw the Shaheens add 38 runs in the final two overs, leaving Oman with a challenging target of 186.

In Oman’s chase, they struggled to build momentum, managing only 34-1 in the powerplay. Qasim Akram took the first wicket for Shaheens, dismissing Aamir Kaleem for 11. Oman continued to lose wickets, with Karan Sonavale and captain Jatinder Singh (24 off 29 balls) falling in the seventh and ninth overs, respectively.

Oman 111-7, 20 overs (Wasim Ali 28, Jatinder Singh 24; Zaman Khan 2-17)
Player of the Match: Rohail Nazir (Pakistan Shaheens)

Egypt Certified Malaria-Free After Nearly a Century of Effort

The World Health Organization (WHO) certified Egypt as malaria-free on Sunday, marking a significant milestone in global health. The WHO hailed this achievement as “truly historic,” acknowledging the culmination of nearly 100 years of efforts to eradicate the disease in Egypt.

“Malaria is as old as Egyptian civilization itself, but the disease that plagued pharaohs now belongs to its history and not its future,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. He praised Egypt’s determination, calling the certification a testament to the country’s commitment to eliminating the ancient scourge.

Global Achievement in Malaria Elimination

With Egypt’s certification, 44 countries and one territory worldwide have now been declared malaria-free by the WHO. To receive certification, a country must prove it has interrupted the chain of indigenous malaria transmission for at least three consecutive years. Additionally, the country must demonstrate its capacity to prevent the re-establishment of the disease.

Despite this victory, malaria remains a global threat, killing over 600,000 people annually. The WHO reports that 95% of these deaths occur in Africa. In 2022, there were 249 million malaria cases recorded globally. The disease, caused by a parasite and spread by Anopheles mosquitoes, is most prevalent in tropical regions.

Egypt’s battle against malaria began in the 1920s with early efforts to reduce human-mosquito contact. These efforts included banning the cultivation of rice and agricultural crops near residential areas. However, the malaria situation worsened during World War II, with more than three million cases recorded in 1942 due to population displacement.

The construction of the Aswan Dam in the 1960s introduced new risks as standing water became breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Nevertheless, Egypt pressed forward, and by 2001, it had malaria “firmly under control,” according to the WHO.

Egypt’s Health Minister, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, emphasized that the fight against malaria doesn’t end with certification. “Receiving the malaria elimination certificate today is not the end of the journey but the beginning of a new phase,” he said. Ghaffar called for sustained efforts in surveillance, diagnosis, and treatment to ensure that the disease doesn’t return.

Challenges in Other Countries

While Egypt celebrates its success, malaria remains a persistent problem in many other parts of the world. Nigeria, for instance, accounts for more than a quarter of all malaria deaths annually. Other high-burden countries include the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and Mozambique.

Egypt’s certification as malaria-free is a significant public health achievement and serves as an inspiration for other nations still battling the disease. However, the global fight against malaria continues, particularly in Africa, where most cases and deaths occur. The WHO’s work in supporting malaria eradication efforts remains critical to reducing the global burden of this deadly disease.

Trudeau Accuses India of “Horrific Mistake” in Violating Canadian Sovereignty

Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, has accused Indian diplomats of being involved in murders and violent acts across Canadian soil. While testifying before a public inquiry, Trudeau stated that Canada has clear intelligence linking Indian diplomats to criminal activities. These include drive-by shootings, home invasions, violent extortion, and even murder across the country.

Trudeau further said that India had made a “horrific mistake” by violating Canadian sovereignty. His remarks came two days after senior Canadian police officials accused Indian diplomats of being involved in criminal acts. These acts range from homicide and targeted assassinations to extortion and coercion, primarily targeting the Canadian Sikh community.

Criminal Activities Targeting Canadian Sikh Community

Among the allegations, Canadian officials have connected Indian diplomats to the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Nijjar, a Sikh activist, was shot dead outside a gurdwara in a Vancouver suburb last June. According to officials, Indian diplomats, including India’s high commissioner, were not only linked to this high-profile murder but also to other killings on Canadian soil.

Collaboration with Notorious Indian Mob Boss Alleged

Additionally, Canadian authorities claim Indian diplomats collaborated with a gang led by India’s most notorious mob boss to carry out these violent acts. These accusations have significantly escalated an already tense diplomatic row between India and Canada.

The diplomatic crisis between the two countries began last year when Trudeau made public statements in Parliament. At that time, he said there were “credible allegations” linking the Indian government to Nijjar’s assassination. India dismissed these claims as “absurd” and has continued to reject any involvement.

The recent allegations represent a new chapter in this ongoing conflict. Canadian officials have provided more details about what they describe as a campaign of violence orchestrated by Indian diplomats. Trudeau’s statements and the police’s accusations have strained relations between the two nations further.

Transnational Threats Emerge in the US, UK, and Pakistan

It is important to note that these allegations of transnational violence by India are not limited to Canada. Similar claims have emerged in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Pakistan. Sikh activists in these countries have reported receiving threats to their lives, further intensifying concerns about India’s actions abroad.

The diplomatic situation between Canada and India remains fragile, with both nations standing firm on their positions. As tensions rise, international attention has grown, and the Sikh community in Canada continues to express concern for their safety. Trudeau’s public claims have brought the issue to the forefront, and the world is now watching how this diplomatic crisis will unfold.

At Least 87 Dead in Gaza Airstrike as Israeli Strikes Target Hezbollah in Beirut

JERUSALEM: At least 87 people died following an airstrike on Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza, according to the health ministry in the Palestinian territory. This attack resulted in one of the highest death tolls from a single strike in months.

Meanwhile, Lebanon’s official National News Agency (NNA) reported that Israeli strikes hit a residential building in Haret Hreik, South Beirut, near a mosque and a hospital. The Israeli military claimed they targeted the “command center of Hezbollah’s intelligence headquarters” along with an underground weapons facility. They also stated that their strikes killed three Hezbollah militants.

These strikes on Hezbollah’s stronghold in southern Beirut followed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s accusation that the Iran-backed group attempted to assassinate him by targeting his residence. The attacks coincided with the week-long Jewish holiday of Sukkot.

The fighting’s intensity became evident when NNA reported 14 Israeli strikes within just 15 minutes on the border village of Khiam. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant informed troops on Sunday that the military was increasing its strikes on Hezbollah. He emphasized that they aimed to “destroy them in places that Hezbollah planned to use as launchpads for attacks against Israel.”

In southern Lebanon, the Lebanese army, which has not engaged in the war, reported that Israeli strikes killed three of its soldiers. The strikes targeted their vehicle, highlighting the escalating violence in the region.

In Gaza, the civil defense agency reported that an Israeli airstrike on a residential area in Beit Lahiya resulted in at least 73 Palestinian deaths. Agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal stated, “Our civil defense crews recovered 73 martyrs and a large number of wounded as a result of the Israeli air force targeting a residential area.”

Kamal Adwan Hospital, overwhelmed with wounded patients, struggled to provide adequate care. Many patients received treatment on the floor, while nearby, the deceased were wrapped in white burial shrouds and placed in neat rows for grieving relatives.

The Jeddah-based Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) condemned the airstrike “in the strongest terms.” The organization described Israel’s actions in Gaza as a “stain on the conscience of humanity.”

In southern Lebanon, NNA reported that Israeli strikes targeted multiple locations, including the city of Nabatiyeh, marking the third attack in the area this week. The ongoing violence continues to escalate tensions in the region, impacting both Gaza and Lebanon as civilians bear the brunt of the conflict.

The situation remains dire, with humanitarian concerns growing as more families are affected by the strikes. As international calls for restraint and peace continue, the conflict shows no signs of abating, and the toll on civilians mounts with each passing day.

Pakistan Must Appoint New Chief Justice by October 22

The coalition government has just over 30 hours to appoint a new Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP). This urgency comes after the enactment of the 26th Constitutional Amendment, which requires the appointment of the CJP to be finalized three days before the current CJP’s retirement. With Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa set to retire on October 25, 2024, the government must finalize the appointment by October 22 at midnight.

The 26th Constitutional Amendment, recently signed into law by President Asif Ali Zardari on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s advice, introduces new rules for appointing the CJP. It sets the CJP’s term at three years or until they turn 65. The amendment also changes the process for selecting the top judge. The selection is no longer based solely on seniority but involves choosing from the three most senior judges of the Supreme Court.

A 12-member parliamentary committee will now play a key role in this process. The committee will nominate the new chief justice with a two-thirds majority vote. Once the committee reaches a decision, the selected name will be forwarded to the prime minister. The prime minister will then send the nomination to the president for final approval. This process, now mandated by law, adds a layer of scrutiny to the selection process.

The Three Senior Judges Declines the Position

If any of the three senior judges declines the position, the next most senior judge will be considered. Currently, the three most senior judges in the Supreme Court are Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, Justice Munib Akhtar, and Justice Yahya Afridi. The government must decide between these judges to appoint the next CJP.

According to a report in The News last week, Justice Yahya Afridi is the likely choice for the next Chief Justice of Pakistan. The report suggested that sources within the government and its allies favor Justice Afridi’s appointment. His neutral stance in recent times, especially when the judiciary has been divided on key issues, makes him a strong candidate for the role. The report highlighted Justice Afridi’s reputation as non-controversial and independent, a quality that could make him a preferred choice in the current political climate.

The clock is ticking for the government to finalize its decision. The new law demands swift action, as the appointment of the next CJP is crucial for the stability of the judiciary. With just over 30 hours remaining, the coalition government must reach a decision and ensure the process is completed before the deadline on October 22.
