ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s fight against polio has hit a setback, with four new cases confirmed in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), bringing the total number of polio infections in 2024 to 37. Officials from the Polio Eradication Initiative (PEI) revealed the disturbing figures on Friday.

The latest victims are all young children. Among them is a 30-month-old girl from Lakki Marwat, an 18-month-old girl from Pishin, a 9-month-old boy from Chaman, and a 5-year-old boy from Noshki. These cases highlight the ongoing risk faced by children in regions where vaccine hesitancy is widespread.

Pakistan remains one of the last countries where wild poliovirus still circulates, along with Afghanistan. Despite global efforts to eliminate the disease, misinformation and conspiracy theories continue to fuel resistance to vaccines. ISLAMABAD: The government is set to present the final draft of the 26th Constitutional Amendment in both houses of parliament today. This comes after intense efforts to align the treasury and opposition parties. Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar announced this at a press conference early Sunday.

The federal cabinet will meet again at 2:30 p.m. today to review and approve the final draft of the proposed amendments. Meetings have continued between ruling and opposition parties, with the aim of finalizing the amendment, which has faced multiple delays.

During a late-night cabinet session on Saturday, the ministers discussed the constitutional changes. Tarar, alongside Information Minister Ataullah Tarar, informed the media that the cabinet was briefed on the draft approved by the parliamentary committee. The committee, comprising members of both the government and the opposition, suggested modifications to the draft.

The cabinet is expected to give the green light to the final version today. Once approved, the draft will be introduced in the Senate at 3 p.m. and in the National Assembly at 6 p.m. The government hopes to begin voting on the amendments today after the bill is tabled.

The coalition government is confident that it has secured enough votes to pass the amendments. However, delays occurred as efforts continued to build broader consensus among political parties. To pass the amendments, the government requires a two-thirds majority in both houses. Reports suggest it is still short of 13 votes in the National Assembly and nine in the Senate.

Last month, the government’s attempt to pass the amendments failed when Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman withheld his support. The amendments remained stalled as a result.

According to insider sources, the accused had procured the fake documents from an agent named Sajjad, paying a hefty sum of 32,000 UAE dirhams, roughly 450,000 Pakistani rupees.

Israel Orders Evacuations Before Striking Beirut’s Southern Suburbs

Netanyahu addressed the attack, saying, “The proxies of Iran who today tried to assassinate me and my wife made a bitter mistake.”

Hezbollah and Israel have been exchanging fire since October last year. Saturday’s attacks followed Hezbollah’s declaration of a new phase in their fight against Israel. This encounter caused superheated steam to shoot up from the well, reaching a record 452°C. “This well produced about ten times more energy than the average well here,” Pálsson explained. The potential for magma wells is enormous; just two could generate as much power as the existing plant’s 22 conventional wells.
