PM Shehbaz Sharif Commits to Gilgit-Baltistan’s Development

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized on Wednesday that the federal government is committed to supporting the people of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB). The region’s development is among the government’s top priorities.

PM Shehbaz chaired a special meeting of the GB cabinet during his daylong visit to Gilgit. He was accompanied by several federal ministers, including Ahsan Iqbal, Attaullah Tarar, Amir Muqam, and Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui. The visit focused on addressing regional needs and planning for further development in the area.

Power and Education Initiatives

During the meeting, the prime minister announced an immediate allocation of 100 megawatts of power for the region. Additionally, he allocated Rs1 billion for a merit-based endowment fund aimed at supporting students from Baltistan University and Karakoram University. These steps are expected to improve local infrastructure and access to education.

PM Shehbaz also expressed satisfaction over the timely completion of the Bubar Model Village housing project, which was set up for those displaced by the 2022 floods. He had previously inaugurated the project and praised its success.

Development Plans for Ghizer District

The prime minister directed the GB administration to prioritize the development of key infrastructure in Ghizer district. This includes educational institutions, sports facilities, and power transmission systems. He also announced the establishment of Daanish Schools in GB, modeled after those in Punjab, to improve educational standards.

Federal Support for Gilgit-Baltistan’s Economy

Reflecting on his tenure as Punjab chief minister, PM Shehbaz highlighted his government’s Rs1 billion contribution to the education sector in GB. He stressed the importance of federal-provincial cooperation in achieving economic stability and development.

The prime minister also shared positive economic news, noting that the stock exchange had crossed the 92,000 mark. Rising remittances, more tax return filers, and a reduction in inflation were mentioned as contributing factors to the national economy’s improvement.

Cooperation and Investment Opportunities

PM Shehbaz praised the collective efforts of all provinces, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan in advancing national progress. He also acknowledged the Qatari government’s interest in investing in GB’s tourism sector, which could provide a significant boost to the region’s economy.

Inauguration of Homes for Flood Victims

Earlier in the day, PM Shehbaz inaugurated new homes for the victims of the 2022 floods in Bubar village, located in Ghizer district. He recalled the devastation he witnessed during his last visit and expressed satisfaction with the new housing. However, he recommended third-party validation to ensure that quality standards were met in the construction.

The prime minister also instructed local authorities to begin work on a school, playground, and dispensary equipped with essential medical facilities, such as ultrasound and X-ray machines. He emphasized the importance of ensuring proper construction, including installing chimneys in the new homes to protect residents from smoke exposure.

Regional Engagement and Security Reassurance

Later, PM Shehbaz met with Governor Syed Mehdi Shah to discuss regional matters. Chief Minister Gulbar Khan presented the prime minister with traditional Balti robes and a cap. PM Shehbaz also laid a floral wreath and offered prayers at the Yadgar-i-Shuhada in the Chief Minister’s Secretariat.

In a separate visit to the Chinese Embassy in Islamabad, the prime minister condemned the recent firing incident in Karachi, in which two Chinese nationals were injured. He assured that those responsible for the attack would face exemplary punishment.

New Study Warns Ultra-Processed Food May Accelerate Aging

A new study suggests that popular breakfast ultra-processed food may speed up the aging process. While many opt for “healthy” breakfasts like fruit yogurt or toast, research from the Scientific Institute for Research, Hospitalization, and Healthcare (IRCCS) in Italy highlights a hidden danger in these choices.

In the U.S., ultra-processed food, such as packaged snacks, instant noodles, and ready meals, account for nearly 60% of daily energy intake, according to findings published in The BMJ. Researchers now link these foods not only to diseases but to accelerated biological aging.

Ultra-Processed Foods and Biological Aging

Aging isn’t only about how long we’ve been alive—known as our chronological age—but also how well our bodies function, known as biological age. While chronological age is fixed, biological age can be influenced by lifestyle choices, like diet, and can accelerate, slow down, or even reverse over time.

To understand how diet affects biological aging, the Italian researchers, in collaboration with LUM University in Casamassima, examined data from over 22,000 participants. They looked at food habits and analyzed more than 30 blood molecules known to reveal biological age. They found that people who consumed more ultra-processed foods generally had a biological age older than their chronological age.

“Our data shows that high consumption of ultra-processed foods not only harms general health but also accelerates aging,” said Simona Esposito, the study’s lead author and a researcher in epidemiology and prevention at IRCCS.

Understanding the Mechanisms Behind Aging and Diet

While scientists are still exploring the exact mechanisms behind this link, they believe that industrial processing might alter food on a molecular level, impacting health beyond the usual nutritional concerns. Many ultra-processed foods are rich in sugars, salt, and unhealthy fats. According to Marialaura Bonaccio, a nutritional epidemiologist at IRCCS, “These foods undergo intense industrial processing that actually alters their food matrix, leading to a loss of nutrients and fiber.”

This loss can affect vital functions in the body, like glucose metabolism and gut health. Many of these foods are also packaged in plastic, which may leach toxic substances into the food and, ultimately, into the body.

Spain Responds to Devastating Floods with Massive Aid Package

The Hidden Risks in Common Foods

Ultra-processed foods are often associated with colorful sodas and heavily preserved snacks, but they include seemingly harmless items too. Packaged bread, sweetened breakfast cereals, and fruit yogurts fall into this category, the study warns. Many people consider these foods healthy; however, their high processing levels might contribute to premature aging.

“Some nutrient-dense packaged foods are still classified as ultra-processed,” said Licia Iacoviello, co-author and director of epidemiology and prevention research at IRCCS. This reclassification, she suggests, should prompt changes in dietary guidance. It’s not just the content of these foods that’s problematic but the high degree of processing involved.

Reevaluating Dietary Choices for Healthy Aging

With findings that ultra-processed foods could impact both health and longevity, experts are urging people to reconsider what they eat. Small changes—choosing less processed options over packaged meals—could support long-term health and potentially slow down biological aging. Researchers hope this study will drive more awareness and lead to dietary recommendations that account for the effects of food processing.

This latest research sheds light on how seemingly minor daily choices can impact aging. While further research is needed to fully understand these effects, the study makes it clear: moving away from ultra-processed foods could be a step toward healthier aging.

AI Detects Breast Cancer Early for Woman After Routine Scan

A woman from Littlehampton, West Sussex, is “deeply grateful” to artificial intelligence (AI) for detecting her breast cancer. Sheila Tooth, 68, had a routine mammogram at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UHSussex). While her scan had previously been given the all-clear, AI technology identified cancerous cells that were almost undetectable by human readers.

Sheila was relieved that the cancer was found early. “I’m deeply grateful for it to have been caught so early,” she said. “When I talk to friends, we just can’t believe this AI can detect what the human eye can’t always see. I just feel so lucky.”

The Role of AI in Breast Cancer Detection

UHSussex is one of 15 trusts in the UK participating in a project to integrate AI into breast cancer screening. The initiative aims to enhance the detection of cancer by using AI to analyze mammograms, improving the accuracy of diagnoses.

During the two-month project, more than 12,000 mammograms were reviewed using AI, including those that were initially deemed “normal.” The AI software flagged about 10% of these scans for a re-read by a clinical panel to catch any cancers missed by initial screenings.

Japanese Researchers Test Wooden Satellite for Sustainable Space Exploration

After further review, 11 women were called back for additional tests. Five of them were diagnosed with breast cancer, with Sheila among them.

AI Increases Accuracy, Reduces Missed Diagnoses

Dr. Olga Strukowska, a consultant radiologist at the West Sussex breast screening programme, expressed excitement over the potential of AI. “The earlier and more accurately we detect cancer, the better the chance our patients will have a positive outcome,” she said. She emphasized that AI helps to increase accuracy and reduce the number of missed cancers, while also lowering false positives.

The use of AI in breast cancer screenings allows radiologists to make more confident, accurate diagnoses. It empowers screening services to deliver timely results and promotes high-quality care for patients.

Potential Life-Saving Technology

Sheila’s experience highlights the importance of early cancer detection. She believes that without AI, her cancer could have developed into invasive cancer later in life. “Being 68, this may have been my last mammogram,” Sheila said. “My early cancer might have developed into invasive cancer in my 70s.”

In Sussex alone, around 650 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year following their routine screenings. The programme invites women aged 50 to 71 for a screening every three years, helping to detect cancer in its early stages when treatment is most effective.

Next Steps for AI in Screening

Following the success of the AI project, UHSussex plans to participate in a national randomised controlled trial to further integrate AI into breast screening. This trial is expected to pave the way for wider adoption of AI technology in breast cancer detection across the UK.

With AI’s proven ability to detect early signs of cancer, it could become a crucial tool in the fight against breast cancer, offering a more accurate and efficient way to save lives.

Wall Street Surges as Trump Wins Election

LONDON: Wall Street rallied to new highs on Wednesday, while the dollar and Bitcoin surged, as markets responded to Donald Trump’s return to the White House. The former president defeated Vice President Kamala Harris, marking a dramatic political comeback four years after his previous loss to Joe Biden.

U.S. Stock Markets Rally

The Dow Jones jumped three percent, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite each gaining around two percent. Analysts attribute this rally to expectations that Trump’s pro-business stance will drive policies favorable to corporate profits.

“Trump is seen as business-friendly and likely to implement tax cuts with little resistance, especially now that the Democrats have lost control of the Senate,” said Fawad Razaqzada, an analyst at City Index and FOREX.com.

Tesla and Trump Media Shares Soar

Trump’s victory has sparked gains in several key stocks, especially in sectors expected to benefit from his policies. Tesla’s shares jumped 13 percent after Trump praised CEO Elon Musk, a major campaign backer, as a “star” in his victory speech.

Similarly, Trump Media & Technology Group saw its stock surge by 30 percent. The company, in which Trump holds a major stake, has tripled in value since hitting lows in September. Trump’s stake is currently valued at about $5 billion.

Stronger Dollar and Bitcoin Record

As Trump’s victory fueled optimism about growth, the dollar rose sharply against major currencies. The dollar gained around two percent against the euro, with investors also betting on fewer interest rate cuts from the Federal Reserve due to Trump’s inflationary tax cuts.

Bitcoin surged to an all-time high, jumping $6,000 to reach $75,371.67, surpassing its previous record of nearly $74,000 in March. Trump has pledged to make the U.S. a global leader in cryptocurrency and plans to task Musk with a large-scale audit of government spending.

European and Asian Markets React Cautiously

While U.S. markets rallied, European stock markets fell into the red, as concerns grew over Trump’s potential tariffs on European automakers. Frankfurt’s index dropped by 1.1 percent, with automaker stocks showing the largest losses.

Asian markets also showed mixed reactions. Chinese stocks were hit hard, reflecting investor fears that Trump may revive tariffs on Chinese imports, affecting the regional economy.

Analysts Highlight Pro-Growth Policies

Patrick O’Hare, an analyst at Briefing.com, said that Trump’s economic policies are being embraced by the stock market for their pro-growth potential. His plans for tax cuts and deregulation are expected to boost corporate profits, especially in big tech and finance sectors.

“Expectations are high that a Trump presidency will mean fewer regulations on big tech and big finance,” O’Hare explained, emphasizing the market’s enthusiasm for policies that support industry growth.

Fed Decision Expected

As markets respond to Trump’s victory, the Federal Reserve is set to announce its latest interest rate decision on Thursday. Analysts expect that Trump’s tax cuts could lead to inflation, which may prompt the Fed to hold off on further rate cuts in the coming months.

KP Honey Exports Enter Malaysian Market

ISLAMABAD: Sidr honey from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has reached Malaysia for the first time. This shift from traditional Middle Eastern markets brings hope for growth in KP’s honey industry. The beekeeping sector, however, has faced limited expansion in recent years.

The export to Malaysia marks a significant step for KP’s honey industry. Historically, KP has relied on markets in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Dubai. The province produces between 15,000 and 20,000 tonnes of honey annually, but only a small portion is exported. Limited access to European markets has hindered growth. Most Pakistani honey is repackaged in Yemen and sold under Yemeni brands in Europe and the U.S.

Commerce Minister Jam Kamal called the shipment to Malaysia a “breakthrough.” He emphasized that it could elevate Pakistan’s agricultural profile and open up more export opportunities.

Pakistani High Commission’s Role

The commerce ministry credited the Pakistani High Commission in Kuala Lumpur for facilitating connections with Malaysian buyers. This deal was laid out during the Second International Agriculture and Food Exhibition in Karachi last August, where Pakistani exporters showcased their products.

COAS Meets Saudi Crown Prince on Defence Cooperation

KP’s Honey Industry: Importance and Challenges

KP is Pakistan’s top honey-producing region. The sector supports about 60,000 honey farms and 1.6 million people, according to the All Pakistan Honeybee Exporters Association. Honey is KP’s second-largest export, after carpets. Despite its potential, the industry faces several challenges. The lack of official industry status prevents honey producers from accessing tax exemptions and incentives available to other sectors. As a result, the association has called for formal recognition, which could ease financial burdens and boost profits for exporters.

Need for Modernization and Investment

Experts say modernization is key for the industry’s growth. They recommend establishing bee clusters and investing in advanced processing facilities. These improvements would help ensure honey quality for international markets. Without them, Pakistan risks losing out on billions in potential revenue due to inadequate export facilities.

Proposal for a National Honey Board

To tackle these challenges, stakeholders suggest forming a national honey board. This board would include members from the All Pakistan Honeybee Exporters Association and the forest department. Its goal would be to streamline industry regulations and help producers meet global standards.

The first shipment of Sidr honey to Malaysia could be a turning point. It opens doors to new markets and offers much-needed support to beekeepers. With the right investments and policies, Pakistan’s honey industry could experience significant growth in the years ahead.

Tim Walz Thanks Harris for Support in the Presidential Campaign

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, running mate to Vice President Kamala Harris, expressed heartfelt thanks to Harris for her trust and support throughout their campaign. Although they did not secure the presidency, Walz took to X (formerly Twitter) to convey his gratitude and pride in campaigning alongside her.

“Campaigning at your side was the honor and privilege of my life,” Walz stated. This marks his first public comment since the election results were announced, as reported by CNN. He acknowledged the hard work of their supporters and urged them to continue fighting for shared values of “decency, compassion, and love of our neighbor.”

Reflecting on the Campaign and Its Values

Walz expressed appreciation for the millions who supported their vision and rallied around their values. While the outcome was disappointing for the Democratic team, Walz remained grateful to all those who stood by them.

“While the outcome is not what we wanted, I am grateful to the millions of Americans who joined our campaign,” he shared. “These are Americans who stood up for our greatest ideals: decency, compassion, and love of our neighbor.” His words resonate with the spirit of their campaign, which focused on fostering unity, empathy, and inclusivity. Walz emphasized that, regardless of the election result, these principles remain at the heart of what they both believe in.

Trump’s Path Back to the White House

In contrast to the Democrats’ reflections, President-elect Donald Trump wasted no time preparing to assume office once more. According to the Associated Press, President Joe Biden placed a congratulatory call to Trump, formally acknowledging his win. Biden even extended an invitation to Trump for an Oval Office meeting, a symbolic gesture to prepare for a peaceful transition of power. “President Trump looks forward to the meeting, which will take place shortly, and very much appreciated the call,” stated Steven Cheung, communications director for Trump’s campaign.

Trump’s Election Victory Poses New Challenges for Prince Harry

Preparing for a Smooth Transition

As Trump’s transition team gears up for his return to office, Biden’s administration has been making preparations to ensure an orderly handover. According to AP, Biden’s Chief of Staff has urged Trump’s team to sign the necessary federal agreements required to initiate the presidential transition. Trump’s transition co-chairs, Howard Lutnick and Linda McMahon, indicated that the team will begin selecting personnel for the administration in the coming days, though they have not yet commented on the formal agreements with the Biden administration.

Reactions in Europe: Uncertainty and Diplomatic Challenges

Across the Atlantic, European leaders are keeping a close eye on Trump’s impending return to office. This shift in U.S. leadership has already prompted a wide array of reactions among European officials, many of whom are preparing for significant changes in foreign policy. Reuters reports that nearly 50 European leaders are gathering for a summit in Budapest, where they will discuss issues such as U.S. support for Ukraine, NATO’s future, and economic relations with the U.S.

Trump’s election has raised uncertainty, especially for nations heavily reliant on U.S. backing in Ukraine’s ongoing conflict with Russia. European leaders have broadly congratulated Trump, yet the looming question remains: how will this administration approach international relations, and will it continue support for NATO and Ukraine?

Germany’s Political Upheaval Adds to the Uncertainty

As if the American political shift weren’t enough, Germany is also dealing with its own turmoil. Just ahead of the Budapest summit, Germany’s three-party coalition government collapsed. Chancellor Olaf Scholz took decisive action by dismissing his finance minister, effectively setting the stage for a general election. This disruption within one of Europe’s strongest economies adds another layer of complexity to the conversations at the summit.

Germany’s fractured government could lead to changes in its policies toward the European Union, NATO, and Ukraine, creating further unpredictability for European allies who depend on Germany’s leadership.

Viktor Orban’s Role and European Concerns

Adding to the tense atmosphere, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has stirred controversy among European peers. Orban has faced criticism for his trips to Moscow and Georgia during Hungary’s EU presidency, actions that many in the EU perceive as a gesture of solidarity with Russia. Known for his criticism of the EU’s stance on Russia, Orban has stated he would “pop champagne corks” in celebration of Trump’s victory, signaling potential friction with other EU leaders.

Orban’s stance has led to concerns within the EU about Hungary’s alignment, particularly regarding its support for Ukraine. As host of the summit, Orban’s actions and words will be under close scrutiny by European leaders, who are wary of his influence over the bloc’s future direction.

Looking Forward: What’s Next for the U.S. and Its Allies?

The coming months will test the resilience of U.S.-European alliances and the adaptability of international relations. With Trump poised to re-enter the White House, European leaders are preparing to recalibrate their strategies to maintain unity in response to global issues. The stakes are high, and the conversations in Budapest may offer a glimpse into the future of U.S.-European relations.

Trump’s stance on issues like NATO and tariffs on European exports will shape Europe’s strategy, especially concerning security and economic policies. Many European leaders have expressed caution, hoping to find common ground with the new administration despite potential policy differences.

Walz’s Message of Resilience

Back in the U.S., Tim Walz’s message to his supporters resonates strongly. As the dust settles after a hard-fought campaign, he encourages Americans to hold on to the values that defined their campaign. “Continue fighting for those values and the country we all love,” he urged. This call to action emphasizes the importance of resilience, unity, and the American spirit of optimism, even in defeat.

Though Walz and Harris’s campaign did not end with a victory, their commitment to these ideals underscores a broader vision for the nation. For Walz and his supporters, the journey toward a more inclusive and compassionate America continues, regardless of the election’s outcome.

Israeli Strikes on Lebanon Claim 38 Lives Near Baalbek

BEIRUT: Israeli airstrikes killed at least 38 people in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley near the eastern city of Baalbek on Wednesday. The regional governor confirmed the casualties, and additional strikes targeted southern suburbs of Beirut as dusk fell.

Escalating Tensions Amid the Gaza Conflict

The Israeli military and Hezbollah have been engaged in cross-border fire for over a year. However, the violence has surged since late September, with Israeli forces intensifying airstrikes on southern and eastern Lebanon. Israeli ground forces have also moved into border villages.

In the Baalbek-Hermel region, around 40 Israeli strikes killed 38 people and injured 54, according to Governor Bachir Khodr on social media platform X. The Israeli military has yet to comment on the strikes. In Beirut, Israeli strikes targeted Hezbollah strongholds in the southern suburbs. Four airstrikes struck the area on Wednesday after the Israeli military ordered evacuations from several locations. No immediate casualty report has been released from the capital.

Political Standoff and Hezbollah’s Response

Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem dismissed hopes for a political resolution. He hinted at potential indirect negotiations if Israel halts its attacks.

“When the enemy decides to stop the aggression, there is a path for negotiations that we have clearly defined — indirect negotiations through the Lebanese state,” Qassem stated. His remarks were a rare nod to possible de-escalation, yet he reinforced Hezbollah’s readiness to continue its offensive.

Lebanese Rescuers Dig for Survivors

Lebanese rescue workers searched the rubble of a destroyed apartment building in Barja, south of Beirut, following an Israeli airstrike on Tuesday evening. The attack killed 20 people, according to the health ministry.

Moussa Zahran, a resident of the building, sifted through the debris in search of his belongings. His feet were wrapped in gauze after being burned during the attack, and his wife and son are in the hospital recovering from injuries.

“These rocks that you see here weigh 100 kilos; they fell on a 13-kilo kid,” Zahran said, referring to the debris that crushed his son. There was no evacuation warning prior to the airstrike, and it remains unclear if a Hezbollah member was targeted.

Hezbollah Targets Israeli Naval Bases

In response, Hezbollah claimed multiple attacks on Wednesday, including two strikes on Israeli naval bases near Haifa and two south of Tel Aviv. Hezbollah reported hitting the Stella Maris naval base with missiles and drones, marking the fourth such attack on the base in recent weeks.

Later, Hezbollah announced it had launched drones at the Haifa naval base for the first time and struck another target south of Tel Aviv.

Combatants Ready for Battle

Hezbollah leader Qassem stated that the group has tens of thousands of combatants prepared for conflict, warning that no area in Israel is beyond Hezbollah’s reach.

“We have tens of thousands of trained resistance combatants ready to fight,” Qassem said during a speech marking 40 days since his predecessor’s death. He stressed that Hezbollah’s campaign against Israel is not influenced by the U.S. election outcome, saying the battlefield—not political developments—will determine the end of hostilities.

“What will stop this war is the battlefield,” he declared, underscoring Hezbollah’s determination to continue its attacks in southern Lebanon and Israel. This was Qassem’s second speech since he assumed leadership of the group last week.

NASA’s Parker Solar Probe Set for Historic Flyby

Today marks a significant milestone in space exploration as NASA’s Parker Solar Probe completes its seventh swing past Venus. This flyby will be the probe’s final maneuver around the planet before it embarks on its journey to within 3.8 million miles of the sun’s surface. This will make the Parker Solar Probe the closest human-made object to ever approach our star.

A Monumental Achievement

The Parker Solar Probe’s upcoming close encounter with the sun is being hailed as a groundbreaking achievement. Nour Raouafi, an astrophysicist and project scientist for the Parker Solar Probe mission at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, compared the milestone to the historic moon landing in 1969. “We are basically almost landing on a star,” Raouafi told BBC News earlier this year. “This will be a monumental achievement for all humanity.”

Mission to Unravel Solar Mysteries

Launched in 2018, the Parker Solar Probe set out on a daring mission to “touch” the sun. Its goal is to unravel some of the greatest mysteries of our star, particularly why the sun’s corona, the outermost layer of its atmosphere, is much hotter than the surface itself. The probe has already started to make progress in understanding these puzzles, offering scientists new insights into the behavior of our sun.

Trump’s Return Celebrated by Supporters at White House

The Probe’s Journey

The Parker Solar Probe, which is about the size of a small car, has already passed several key milestones on its journey towards the sun. As it continues its mission, it will get closer and closer to the star, gathering vital data about solar activity and the sun’s mysterious outer layers. This data is crucial for understanding the sun’s behavior, including the causes of solar winds and space weather, which can impact both technology on Earth and the broader solar system.

By the end of its mission, the Parker Solar Probe will have made several flybys of Venus, using the planet’s gravity to slingshot itself closer to the sun with each pass. These maneuvers will ultimately bring the probe to within unprecedented proximity to our star, offering scientists an up-close view that was once unimaginable.

The Rise of Protein-Centered Diets, Is It Worth the Hype?

If you’ve scrolled through social media recently, chances are you’ve encountered numerous influencers promoting protein-centered diets. From keto to carnivore, these diets often focus on protein-heavy meals, with people sharing recipes and weight-loss stories. But where did this obsession with protein come from, and is it really necessary?

Dietitians are warning that the obsession with protein is more complicated than it seems. “We don’t even need to think about [grams of] protein per day,” says Federica Amati, a leading nutritionist at Zoe, a UK-based nutrition and science company. Amati and other experts suggest that focusing too much on protein can distract from other essential nutritional needs.

Why Protein Is Important

Protein is a vital macronutrient made up of amino acids. It plays a crucial role in the body, supporting cell and tissue growth, hormones, enzymes, and much more. Regular intake of protein is essential for maintaining these functions.

Registered dietitian Abbey Sharp emphasizes the many benefits of protein. “Protein has tremendous benefits for weight management, satiety, immunity, hair, nails, muscle growth, and metabolism maintenance,” she explains. Protein is necessary for overall health, but its role is more balanced than the social media world portrays.

The Protein Craze Explained

The preoccupation with protein is not only visible in online discussions but also on supermarket shelves. From protein shakes to protein-packed pastries, the market is flooded with products claiming to boost your protein intake. Social media influencers push various methods to hit high protein goals—some even mixing protein shakes with Diet Coke or crafting protein-heavy desserts like ice cream. The hashtag #highprotein has over 2.7 million posts on Instagram.

Amati attributes this obsession to the boom in fitness, nutrition, and weight-loss industries. While protein-centered diets are important for muscle building and weight loss, many influencers promote higher protein consumption than most people actually need. The problem, according to Amati, is that focusing too much on protein often leads to neglecting other crucial nutrients that the body requires.

Are We Really Protein Deficient?

Despite the flood of protein-centric content, the truth is that most people already get enough protein in their diet. “If you’re meeting your caloric needs … you’re meeting your protein needs,” says Sharp. The idea that most people are protein-deficient is not accurate. In fact, overemphasizing protein can lead to an unbalanced diet, making people overlook other essential nutrients such as fiber, healthy fats, and vitamins.

Amati adds that an excessive focus on protein can result in people not getting the full range of nutrients their bodies need to function optimally. By obsessing over protein, they may miss out on the benefits of a more diverse and balanced diet.

A Balanced Approach to Nutrition

Ultimately, experts advise taking a more balanced approach to nutrition. While protein is important, it should be part of a broader diet that includes a variety of nutrients. Instead of chasing after unrealistic protein goals, focus on meeting your overall caloric needs and ensuring a diverse range of nutrients to support long-term health. This holistic approach will likely lead to better health outcomes than fixating on any one macronutrient.

Japanese Researchers Test Wooden Satellite for Sustainable Space Exploration

Space exploration faces a growing sustainability issue. Most satellites are made of aluminum, and when they re-enter Earth’s atmosphere, they burn up, releasing harmful chemicals, including aluminum oxides. These chemicals could harm the ozone layer. The problem is worsening as more satellites are launched each year.

To address this, Japanese researchers developed a wooden satellite called LignoSat. It arrived at the International Space Station (ISS) on Tuesday, where it will undergo tests to see if wood could work as a satellite material. LignoSat, a small box with four-inch sides, uses sustainable timber instead of aluminum. According to Space.com, the goal is to see if wood can handle space conditions while lessening environmental harm.

Wood’s Potential in Space

Meghan Everett, NASA’s deputy chief scientist for the ISS program, admits wood in space might seem odd but sees promise. “While some of you might think that wood in space seems a little counterintuitive, researchers hope this investigation demonstrates that a wooden satellite can be more sustainable and less polluting for the environment than conventional satellites,” Everett said.

Japanese Collaboration for Sustainable Innovation

LignoSat is a joint project between Kyoto University and a Japanese homebuilding company, aiming to explore wood’s durability in space conditions. The satellite will be exposed to extreme temperature fluctuations and cosmic radiation, which will reveal if wood can serve as a practical alternative to metal in space applications.

Wood as a Resource for Long-Term Space Habitation

Dr. Takao Doi, a former astronaut who now studies space activities at Kyoto University, envisions wood as a resource for building sustainable space habitats. “With timber, a material we can produce by ourselves, we will be able to build houses, live, and work in space forever,” Doi told Reuters. If successful, this innovation could lead to a future where human colonies in space rely on renewable materials for construction.

A Step Toward Cleaner Space Technology

Researchers aim to make space exploration less environmentally damaging by using renewable materials like wood. Aluminum-based satellites have posed a persistent risk due to the harmful residues they leave in the atmosphere upon re-entry. If LignoSat demonstrates wood’s resilience, future satellites could reduce pollution and protect the ozone layer.

Future Prospects for Wooden Satellites

The outcome of this experiment could inspire a shift in satellite design and production. If wood proves capable of enduring space’s harsh environment, it could be a pioneering material for sustainable space technology. Experts see this trial as the first step toward eco-friendly exploration beyond Earth.

Police Register Case After Security Guard Shoots Chinese Nationals

Police registered a case, on Wednesday, against a security guard who shot and injured two Chinese nationals the day before. The incident occurred in the Sindh Industrial Trading Estate (SITE) Area of Karachi, where a clash broke out between Chinese nationals and security guards at a local police station.

A senior official from the Sindh Home Department confirmed the incident. The security guard, identified as Sharifullah, opened fire on two Chinese workers, injuring them critically. Following the attack, the Sindh Home Minister, Ziaul Hassan Lanjar, ordered authorities to arrest the shooter and called for a thorough inquiry into the incident.

Details of the Shooting

According to a First Information Report (FIR) filed on Tuesday night, Najeebul Rab, a security in charge at a nearby textile mill, detailed the events leading up to the shooting. Rab stated that he, along with four Chinese nationals, police, and private guards, arrived at the mill around 8:02 AM.

The workers, including Zheng Luwen and Wang Xingzhong, were at the factory’s first floor for machinery installation. At around 8:15 AM, Sharifullah, a security guard with the Executive Security company, approached the first floor. Without warning, he began firing at the Chinese nationals with a 9mm pistol.

The attack left both Chinese nationals severely injured. They were rushed to Liaquat National Hospital in the factory’s ambulance, while Sharifullah fled the scene with his weapon.

Kamala Harris Concedes 2024 Presidential Election to Donald Trump

Police Investigation

Police arrived shortly after the incident and recovered 16 spent bullet casings at the scene. The complainant, Najeebul Rab, stated that the shooting caused panic among other factory workers and that the security guard should be charged with attempted murder and creating fear.

The police registered the case under Section 324 (attempted murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code and Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (punishment for acts of terrorism).

Prime Minister’s Visit to Chinese Embassy

In response to the attack, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited the Chinese Embassy in Karachi on Wednesday to condemn the incident. During his visit, he spoke with Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zaidong, expressing condolences for the injured nationals and assuring that the authorities would soon capture those responsible.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the security of Chinese nationals in Pakistan was a top priority for the government. He also noted that the attack was an attempt to damage the strong relationship between Pakistan and China.

“The security of Chinese nationals is critical, and we are taking immediate action to ensure those responsible are brought to justice,” said Sharif.

Previous Attacks on Chinese Nationals

The shooting is part of a larger pattern of violence against Chinese nationals in Pakistan, especially those involved in China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects. The recent escalation of attacks has raised security concerns for Chinese workers in the country.

Earlier this year, a suicide attack near Karachi’s airport, claimed by the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), killed two Chinese nationals and injured ten others. In March, five Chinese workers were killed in Besham, and in 2022, a suicide bombing outside Karachi’s University of Karachi’s Confucius Institute killed three Chinese nationals.

The increase in violence against Chinese workers has drawn attention from both the Chinese government and Pakistani officials, with calls for greater security and stricter measures to protect foreign nationals working on key projects in Pakistan.

Trump’s Election Victory Poses New Challenges for Prince Harry

Donald Trump’s election victory presents a new challenge for Prince Harry. The former US president has consistently criticized the Duke of Sussex since he moved to the US with his wife, Meghan Markle, in 2020. Trump called Harry’s departure an “unforgivable betrayal” of his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.

Trump has also raised concerns about Harry’s legal status in the US. In March 2023, he suggested Harry could face deportation if he didn’t disclose past drug use on his visa application. This remark followed Harry’s admission in his memoir Spare that he had used substances like cocaine, marijuana, and psychedelic mushrooms.

The Heritage Foundation’s Legal Challenge

The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, is fighting to make Harry’s visa application public. The group questioned why Harry was allowed to enter the US despite acknowledging his drug use. In September, a lawsuit against the US Department of Homeland Security was rejected. However, on October 22, the foundation filed a new petition to reopen the case and gain access to the application.

Defence Minister Says Trump Unlikely to Call for Imran Khan’s Release

The think tank claims that the release of Harry’s visa application is a matter of “immense public interest.” It argues that the Duke’s failure to declare drug use could be grounds for deportation. In response, Trump has supported the push to make the documents public, indicating that if Harry had lied on his application, “appropriate action” should be taken.

Trump’s Stance on Prince Harry

Trump’s stance on Harry’s future in the US has become increasingly clear. Speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference in February, Trump criticized Harry for “betraying the Queen” and emphasized that he would not protect him. “He would be on his own if it was up to me,” Trump said at the time.

In March, Trump went further, stating that if authorities discovered that Harry had lied on his visa application, he should face consequences, including possible deportation. “I wouldn’t protect him,” Trump reiterated in an interview with GB News. The possibility of Harry’s visa being revoked is a growing concern for the Duke, as his legal status in the US continues to be scrutinized.

NEPRA Cuts Fuel Charges to Ease Electricity Costs for September

Eric Trump’s View on Harry’s Visa

Despite his father’s harsh rhetoric, Eric Trump, Donald’s son, recently weighed in on Harry’s situation. In an interview with MailOnline, Eric suggested that Harry’s visa was not in jeopardy. He claimed that “no one cares” about the Duke or his wife Meghan Markle, who remain unpopular in certain circles in the US. Eric also expressed that the Trump family still holds great respect for the British monarchy, particularly the late Queen Elizabeth, although he criticized Harry for causing harm to the royal family.

Prince Harry’s Uncertain Future in the US

With Trump’s victory, Prince Harry faces a complex and uncertain future in the US. The legal challenges over his visa, coupled with Trump’s ongoing criticisms, may make Harry’s residency in the US more precarious. As the Heritage Foundation continues its legal efforts, it remains to be seen whether Harry will have to leave the US, or if his status will be determined by the outcome of the case.

Spain Responds to Devastating Floods with Massive Aid Package

A week after historic floods ravaged the Valencia region, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez unveiled a massive aid package to help residents and businesses rebuild. In his announcement, Sanchez underscored the urgency of adapting to climate change, describing it as a deadly force, particularly affecting the Mediterranean area. “Climate change kills and we are witnessing it,” he said, promising to drive transformation in the affected territories.

Flooding Caused by Record-Breaking Rainfall

The devastating floods were triggered by a powerful storm system that brought record rainfall to Valencia. The rains caused river banks to burst, sending tsunami-like waves toward coastal areas. Emergency alerts arrived too late, leaving many residents caught off guard. As a result, at least 217 bodies have been recovered, while search and rescue missions continue. Authorities have not yet disclosed the number of missing persons.

Search and Rescue Operations in Full Swing

Around 15,000 military personnel and national police officers are on the ground, working to find the missing, secure the affected areas, and restore basic services. Prime Minister Sanchez acknowledged the enormity of the damage, stating that many homes and businesses were destroyed or buried under mud. “There are still missing people we need to find, homes and businesses that have been destroyed – buried under mud – and many people are still severely lacking,” he said at a press conference.

Financial Measures and Aid Package

Sanchez announced several financial measures to assist flood victims, many of which mirror the support provided during the COVID-19 pandemic. The government will provide direct money transfers to affected homes and businesses, along with government-backed loans and significant tax breaks. Insurance payouts are expected to reach €3.5 billion ($3.8 billion), with 70,000 claims already filed.

Afghanistan Takes Commanding 92-Run Victory Over Bangladesh

Request for European Union Aid

In addition to national efforts, Sanchez revealed that Spain has requested assistance from the EU’s Solidarity Fund. “Spain has always offered the European Union help when it was needed, but now, Spain is asking for help,” Sanchez stated, highlighting the need for international support in the wake of the disaster.

Criticism of Slow Response and Prevention Failures

Despite the government’s efforts, survivors of the floods and their families have expressed frustration over the lack of preventative measures and slow cleanup operations. On Sunday, a visit by Sanchez, the president of Valencia, and Spain’s royal family to one of the hardest-hit towns was met with anger. Protestors hurled mud and insults at the officials, with Sanchez being struck and an official vehicle damaged. The situation escalated when radical groups reportedly joined the protest, with the intent of causing further disruption.

Sanchez Stays Focused on the Affected Citizens

Despite the violent protests, Sanchez remained focused on the recovery efforts. “I’m fine, and they will not take my attention away from what matters — the affected citizens,” he said, reaffirming his commitment to helping those in need and ensuring the country’s focus remains on the rebuilding process.

The floods in Valencia have highlighted both the immediate devastation of extreme weather events and the long-term challenges of adapting to a changing climate. The Spanish government’s ongoing response will be crucial in both the short and long-term recovery of the region.

Punjab Closes Schools from November 7 to 17 Amid Smog Crisis

The Punjab government has ordered the closure of all schools from November 7 to 17, as the province battles hazardous smog and dangerously high levels of air pollution. This decision comes in response to the alarming rise in the Air Quality Index (AQI), which reached critical levels in several districts, particularly Lahore.

Smog Declared a Calamity

On Thursday, the Punjab government officially declared smog a calamity. The provincial administration announced a series of measures aimed at tackling the hazardous air quality. These include mandatory vacations for disabled children and a ban on all activities contributing to smog formation. The government hopes to improve the air quality in affected areas and reduce the harmful effects of smog, which has worsened in recent days.

Green Lockdown and Enforcement Challenges

Just a day earlier, the Punjab government imposed a green lockdown in select areas of Lahore, identified as “smog hotspots.” However, enforcement of the lockdown remained weak, with limited action taken on the first day. To combat the smog crisis more effectively, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has invoked Section 3 of the Punjab National Calamities (Prevention and Relief) Act, 1958. This legal move allows the government to take emergency measures to restore order and provide relief in areas affected by calamities.

Lahore Struggles with Hazardous Air Quality

On Tuesday, Lahore experienced hazardous air quality, with the AQI soaring to 609, making it the most polluted city in the world that day. The hazardous air quality has made life difficult for residents, many of whom have reported breathing problems and other health issues.

In response, the Punjab government issued a notification on Wednesday stating that all educational institutions, including private tuition centers, would remain closed until November 17. Classes will shift to online mode during this period. The closure applies to schools up to the Higher Secondary Level (12th grade/A-level) across several districts, including Lahore, Sheikhupura, Kasur, and others. The government emphasized its efforts to tackle both the intrinsic factors causing air pollution and the deteriorating air quality.

Public Advisory on Health Risks

In addition to school closures, the Punjab government issued an advisory urging the public to wear face masks in open public spaces. This advisory will remain in effect until January 31, 2025, for residents of Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, and Multan divisions. The government highlighted the increase in respiratory diseases linked to smoke, dust, and other pollutants, posing a significant health risk to the population.

The advisory stressed the importance of taking preventive measures to avoid the worsening public health crisis. “It is imperative to take all possible safety measures for prevention of morbidity and disease caused by deteriorating air quality,” the notification read.

Long-Term Efforts to Combat Air Pollution

As Punjab grapples with this ongoing air quality crisis, officials continue to explore long-term solutions to reduce pollution. The closure of schools and the green lockdown represent just a small part of the government’s broader efforts to tackle the smog issue, which has become a recurring problem in the province. Authorities are working on stricter enforcement of air quality regulations and exploring alternative measures to improve the environment and public health.

The smog crisis in Punjab remains a pressing issue, and the government has pledged to take all necessary steps to control the air quality and protect the health of its residents.

Netanyahu Removes Defence Minister Gallant

Months of reported conflict between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his now-former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant have culminated in Gallant’s dismissal. The two officials clashed over Israel’s approach to its ongoing conflicts, with tensions reportedly escalating to intense arguments over war strategy. Gallant, a seasoned military figure, brought decades of experience that often set him at odds with Netanyahu’s directives.

Gallant’s Military Background and Influence

Gallant’s military career began in 1977 as a navy commando, leading him to the rank of major general in Israel’s Southern Command. His leadership during two major conflicts in Gaza earned him significant respect among Israel’s armed forces. This experience gave Gallant considerable influence within the military, a fact that reportedly caused friction with Netanyahu, especially given the current government’s hard-line stance.

Differing Views on Gaza War Strategy

After Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, Gallant initially supported the Gaza war efforts. However, he soon advocated for a different approach, pressing the government to negotiate a hostage release deal with Hamas and to consider ending the conflict in Gaza. In recent months, he consistently raised concerns about the lack of a post-war strategy, calling for a comprehensive investigation into the political and intelligence lapses that led to the attack. Netanyahu, however, dismissed Gallant’s calls for these measures, pushing instead for continued military pressure.

Contentious Ultra-Orthodox Exemptions

Gallant also opposed Netanyahu’s stance on continuing to exempt ultra-Orthodox seminary students from military service, arguing that Israel, engaged in multiple conflicts, could not afford such exclusions. Netanyahu, needing ultra-Orthodox party support to maintain his coalition, ignored Gallant’s objections, further straining their relationship.

Hurricane Rafael Rapidly Intensifies, Threatens Cuba

Replacement with Foreign Minister Israel Katz

Replacing Gallant is former Foreign Minister Israel Katz, who aligns more closely with Netanyahu’s strategic vision. Katz pledged to achieve the war’s objectives, including freeing hostages and defeating Hamas and Hezbollah, despite his limited military background. This lack of military experience raises concerns both domestically and internationally as Israel faces simultaneous conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon.

Significance of Gallant’s Removal

Gallant’s dismissal leaves Netanyahu’s cabinet without a minister capable of challenging the prime minister’s decisions. Analysts suggest that his removal signals Netanyahu’s desire to surround himself with officials fully committed to his hard-line stance, potentially escalating tensions within the government.

Implications for U.S.-Israel Relations

Gallant’s ouster on the day of the U.S. election has drawn attention. His relationship with the Biden administration was notably stronger than Netanyahu’s, which may indicate Netanyahu’s willingness to shift alliances. With former U.S. President Donald Trump’s team reportedly offering strategic input, Gallant’s removal could signify a broader shift in Israel’s alignment and foreign policy approach.

Trump’s Return Celebrated by Supporters at White House

The rhythmic beat of dhol drums echoed outside the White House, on Wednesday morning, as Republican supporters gathered to celebrate Donald Trump’s return to the presidency. After a four-year break from the political spotlight, Trump’s victory sparked a lively celebration. The crowd, full of energy and enthusiasm, marked what they viewed as an extraordinary political comeback.

“This is the greatest political comeback in US history,” said Sajid Tarar, leader of “Muslims for Trump.” Tarar, who had recited Surah Fateha at Trump’s inauguration in 2016, was joined by a diverse group of supporters, including Muslims and Sikhs. “He will make America great again,” Tarar declared, expressing unwavering confidence in Trump’s leadership.

Supporters’ Reasons for Celebration

Irfan Yaqub, standing beside Tarar, explained why he was celebrating. “Trump at least pledged to end the war in the Middle East, which Kamala Harris never committed to,” he said. This pledge resonated with many of Trump’s supporters, who had traveled from Maryland and Virginia to join the celebrations. They believed Trump’s policies would benefit America and the world.

Contrasting Atmosphere in Washington D.C.

In stark contrast, Washington D.C. was eerily quiet. Democratic activists and political workers seemed absent, still processing their defeat. Many residents of Washington had supported Kamala Harris, and the mood of disappointment was palpable across the city. Democratic headquarters at Howard University, where supporters had gathered for what they hoped would be a historic moment, showed signs of weariness as the night wore on.

Harris Supporters’ Disappointment at Howard University

The early excitement at Howard University’s Yard, where campaign co-chairs led songs and dances, quickly faded as Trump’s lead grew. By the time Cedric Richmond, a campaign co-chair, announced that Harris would not address the crowd, the energy had all but disappeared. “The energy was so high at the start, but it fizzled out quickly,” said one volunteer.

Trump’s Headquarters in Mar-a-Lago

Meanwhile, at Trump’s campaign headquarters in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, the mood was upbeat. As favorable updates came in, the atmosphere became electric. Trump and his aides focused on battleground states like Pennsylvania, while supporters cheered as news networks reported victories in North Carolina and Pennsylvania. The excitement at Mar-a-Lago contrasted sharply with the subdued mood in Washington.

Shifting Mood at Howard University

As the night progressed, the mood at Howard University grew more somber. Empty seats and discarded flags signaled the quiet departure of Harris supporters. Some tried to keep the spirit alive with music, but the disappointment lingered. “We thought we were witnessing history,” said Margaret Dean, a Howard student, reflecting on the loss.

Democrats Reflect and Regroup

By Wednesday afternoon, Harris supporters began to process the defeat. Many were determined to press forward. Hadi Jawad, a campaign organizer from Texas, called for continued efforts. “The real work begins the day after the election,” he urged, emphasizing the need for Democrats to organize.

Other Democrats, like Fayyaz ul Hassan, a delegate, stressed resilience. “The fight continues. We don’t give up,” he declared. Party strategist Zulfi reflected on the party’s mistakes. “Democrats alienated young progressives by sticking with outdated strategies,” he said, highlighting the need for a change in approach.

As the dust settled, Democrats vowed to regroup and prepare for future challenges, promising a renewed commitment to their cause.

Political Moves Won’t End Hezbollah-Israel War: Naim Qassem

Hezbollah’s deputy leader, Naim Qassem, stated that only military developments on the battlefield could bring an end to the ongoing conflict with Israel. In a clear message, Qassem emphasized that political moves would not stop the war, now over a year old. He asserted that the only way to halt the hostilities was through continued fighting, not negotiations.

“Our conviction is that only one thing can stop this war of aggression, and that is the battlefield,” Qassem said, reinforcing his belief that political action would not resolve the issue.

No Political Action Will End the Conflict

The conflict, which began over a year ago, is ongoing in parallel with Israel’s military offensive in Gaza. Qassem, who assumed leadership of Hezbollah after the killing of his predecessor, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, in Israeli airstrikes in September, dismissed the idea that political solutions could bring peace.

In a pre-recorded televised address, Qassem made it clear that only when Israel ceases its attacks on Lebanon could indirect negotiations begin through the Lebanese government. He stressed that these talks would require full protection of Lebanese sovereignty, though he did not elaborate on the specifics.

Conditions for Peace Talks

Qassem outlined a path for future talks, but only under specific conditions. He stated that indirect negotiations would be possible through Lebanon’s parliament and its Speaker, Nabih Berri, but only if Israel stopped its aggression. However, he made it clear that these negotiations must ensure Lebanon’s sovereignty is fully protected.

NEPRA Cuts Fuel Charges to Ease Electricity Costs for September

“At that moment, there is a path for negotiations that we have clearly defined,” Qassem added, but warned that any discussions would be contingent on Israel’s actions to halt its attacks.

Ongoing Israeli Attacks on Lebanon

Israeli airstrikes across Lebanon have led to a growing number of casualties. Recent reports indicate that at least 37 people were killed and 105 injured in the latest attacks. According to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, over 3,000 people have died since Israel began its offensive against Lebanon last October. The majority of those killed in the attacks were civilians.

Hezbollah’s leader emphasized that these continued Israeli strikes, which have severely impacted Lebanon’s civilian population, underscore the urgency of a resolution.

Iraq Rejects Use of Territory for Attacks

Iraq has firmly rejected the idea of allowing its territory to be used for launching attacks in the ongoing Middle East conflict. After reports suggested that Iran might retaliate against Israeli missile strikes, Iraq’s National Security Council issued a statement denying these claims. The statement described the reports as “pretexts” aimed at justifying attacks on Iraq’s sovereignty.

Israeli and US Leaders Discuss Security

In another development, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump after Trump’s victory in the recent presidential election. According to Netanyahu’s office, the conversation was “warm and cordial” and focused on mutual concerns over the Iranian threat. The two leaders discussed strategies to enhance Israel’s security and cooperate on regional stability.

Despite the ongoing conflict, both Netanyahu and Trump reaffirmed their commitment to addressing shared security challenges, particularly regarding Iran.

Kamala Harris Concedes 2024 Presidential Election to Donald Trump

Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee for president, conceded the 2024 election on Wednesday, November 6. At 60 years old, Harris called President-elect Donald Trump, 78, to congratulate him on his victory. A senior aide to Harris confirmed the conversation and stated that she expressed her hopes for a peaceful transition of power.

Harris Reflects on Her Campaign

In her call, Harris also conveyed her desire for Trump to be a president for all Americans. Her message focused on the importance of unity and cooperation as the country moves forward after the election. The vice president is expected to address the nation later in the day, at 4 p.m. ET, in a speech at Howard University in Washington, D.C.

A Defeated but Hopeful Campaign

Harris announced her presidential campaign on July 21, shortly after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed her. Biden, who had previously defeated Trump in the 2020 election, voiced strong support for Harris throughout her campaign.

“My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made,” Biden wrote on social media in July. “Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee for our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”

Harris’s Commitment to Uniting the Party

After Biden’s endorsement, Harris confirmed she would run for president. In a statement shared by the Biden campaign, she called Biden “selfless and patriotic” and pledged to earn and win the Democratic nomination. She expressed her commitment to uniting the party and the nation to defeat Trump and his agenda for the future.

“I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination,” Harris said at the time. “Over the past year, I have traveled across the country, talking with Americans about the clear choice in this momentous election. And that is what I will continue to do in the days and weeks ahead. I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party — and unite our nation — to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda.”

Securing the Nomination

Harris’s efforts paid off when she secured enough Democratic delegates to formally earn the party’s presidential nomination. She garnered more than the 1,976 pledged delegates required, officially clinching the nomination during the Democratic National Convention.

While her campaign came to an end with the concession call, Harris’s message of unity and hope for the future remains central to her political vision. As the nation braces for a change in leadership, her speech later today will likely focus on healing and moving forward together.

Defence Minister Says Trump Unlikely to Call for Imran Khan’s Release

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif on Wednesday stated that Pakistan’s government does not expect U.S. President-elect Donald Trump to push for Imran Khan’s release. During a broadcast on the U.S. election, Asif said, “We don’t think Trump will call for PTI founder’s release. Let’s wait 15 to 20 days and see his stance.” Trump, a Republican, recently won against Democrat Kamala Harris, reclaiming the presidency after a four-year gap.

Imran Khan Responds to Trump’s Victory

After Trump’s win, Imran Khan congratulated him, hoping for stronger Pak-U.S. ties rooted in democracy and human rights. Imprisoned due to multiple convictions, Khan expressed hope that Trump’s administration would also support global peace and rights.

Opposition Leaders Extend Congratulations

Omar Ayub Khan, the Leader of the Opposition and PTI member, congratulated Trump and his VP-elect, JD Vance. Ayub’s support comes as Imran Khan remains imprisoned, having served over a year following various convictions. Despite his detention, PTI sees Trump’s win as a potential diplomatic advantage, recalling Khan’s positive ties with Trump’s last administration.

PTI leader Raoof Hasan clarified that the party has no expectations of foreign intervention. “We had never pinned hopes on Trump, and we aren’t relying on his win now. We’re taking support from the judiciary, parliament, and peaceful protests for Khan’s release,” he said. Hasan confirmed that PTI has held no internal discussions about seeking external help.

PTI’s Relationship with the Establishment

Hasan also discussed PTI’s ties with Pakistan’s establishment. He said the party has “normal interaction” with them, though they have no direct contact about Khan’s legal issues. Hasan added that PTI relies on local institutions and protests to secure Khan’s freedom.

Trump’s Past Ties with Imran Khan

Imran Khan shared a good relationship with Trump’s previous administration during his time as prime minister. Some PTI members see this as favorable. Trump’s past rapport with Khan makes many PTI supporters optimistic after his election win. However, Asif’s comments show that Pakistan’s government does not expect U.S. involvement in Khan’s case.

Imran Khan’s Uncertain Future

PTI supporters hope Trump’s win will boost U.S.-Pakistan relations. Still, the government is cautious. Asif’s remarks indicate the focus remains on internal processes without expecting Trump to intervene in Khan’s detention.

Bangladesh Skipper Reflects on Batting Collapse

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto acknowledged his team’s promising start but pointed to the batting collapse as the main reason for the defeat. Shanto highlighted the importance of one batter anchoring the innings, admitting that no one managed to play that role. He praised the Afghan spin duo of Nabi and Rashid Khan for their tight bowling and congratulated Afghanistan on their well-earned win. Shanto expressed determination to bounce back in the next game.

Ghazanfar’s Six-Wicket Haul Earns Player of the Match

AM Ghazanfar was awarded Player of the Match for his remarkable six-wicket performance, which tore through Bangladesh’s lower order. Supported by Rashid Khan and Nabi, Ghazanfar kept Bangladesh on the back foot with accurate and aggressive bowling. His spell ensured Afghanistan held control throughout the innings despite a few dropped chances.

Bangladesh Falters After Strong Start

Bangladesh showed early promise with their pacers, quickly breaking Afghanistan’s top order. However, steady innings from Shahidi and Nabi pushed Afghanistan to a competitive total, which proved too challenging for Bangladesh to chase. Soumya Sarkar and Shanto initially provided stability, but once Shanto was dismissed, the Bangladesh innings spiraled, with the lower order failing to contribute significantly.

Afghanistan Eyes Series Win

With this victory, Afghanistan extends its strong record at Sharjah against Bangladesh, who have yet to win an ODI in this venue over the past 29 years. The hosts will look to carry this momentum into the second game, while Bangladesh will be aiming to turn the series around.
