Lucas Bravo Hints at Leaving ‘Emily in Paris

Lucas Bravo, known for his role as Gabriel in the Netflix hit Emily in Paris, recently revealed he’s contemplating an exit from the popular rom-com series. Bravo, who plays the on-again-off-again love interest of Emily Cooper, expressed concerns in an interview with IndieWire about the show’s character development, particularly around Gabriel’s storyline. The actor’s remarks have sparked conversation among fans and cast doubt on his future with the series.

Frustration with Gabriel’s Character Arc

Bravo, 36, admitted feeling “frustrated with the direction my character is taking.” In season one, Gabriel’s character resonated strongly with him, yet, he noted, as each season progressed, he found himself growing disconnected from the character. Bravo pointed to Gabriel’s choices and the overall direction the character was pushed toward, which he feels strays from the authentic portrayal initially established.

Questioning Future Involvement

The French actor further elaborated on the challenges he’s facing with his role, highlighting his concerns about the “lack of risk” in the show’s storytelling approach. He voiced doubts about returning for season five, given that his contract ends after season four. Bravo expressed that this potential exit is something he’s seriously considering, especially as the current storyline has made him question his involvement in future seasons.

Mixed Feelings About Leaving

Despite his frustrations, Bravo shared that Emily in Paris holds a special place in his heart. He acknowledged that the series was pivotal in his career, as it opened doors and brought him international recognition. In his words, he “loves the show” and values the opportunities it has provided. However, his sense of artistic fulfillment seems to be at odds with the role’s current direction, leaving fans curious about his ultimate decision.

Uncertain Future for Gabriel

Bravo’s candid reflections underscore a larger question regarding character growth and evolution in Emily in Paris. With no official word on whether season five will see Gabriel return, fans are left in suspense about how the story will evolve and what impact Bravo’s potential departure could have on the beloved show.

Historic Rainfall Transforms Spain’s Coastline

Massive rainfall this week in Spain has left parts of its eastern coast resembling an inland sea, as extreme flooding covered vast areas, submerging towns and erasing landscapes. Satellite images taken before and after this unprecedented event reveal how the flooding dramatically altered the region’s topography, giving the coastal areas the appearance of islands amid a sea of floodwaters.

Unprecedented Rainfall and Devastation

In just a few hours on Tuesday, east-central Spain experienced a year’s worth of rainfall, sparking severe flooding across the region. This historic downpour turned streets into rivers, washed away cars and bridges, and caused rivers to breach their banks. The resulting flash floods left at least 155 people dead, underscoring the severity of extreme weather patterns that scientists link to climate change.

A Region Transformed: Before and After

Satellite images taken on October 8 and October 30 reveal the profound changes to the landscape. Once visible patches of dry ground, shown in greens and browns, are now submerged under various shades of blue, marking the extent of floodwaters. Waterways that appeared narrow or invisible before the storm—such as the river running south of Valencia’s city center—have swelled significantly, turning areas near the Balearic Sea into virtual islands.

Valencia Hit Hard with Massive Flooding

Valencia’s surrounding areas, including Sedaví and Chiva, bore the brunt of this deluge. In Sedaví, floodwaters left cars and debris piled in the streets, a testament to the force of flash flooding that swept through the city. In Chiva, just west of Valencia, rainfall measured nearly 19 inches in only eight hours, according to Spain’s meteorological agency, AEMET. This amount, equivalent to what the area would typically experience over an entire year, was enough to submerge roads, flood buildings, and cut off communities.

The Climate Factor

Experts have linked this extreme rainfall event to climate change. According to a rapid analysis by World Weather Attribution, this week’s rainfall was approximately 12% heavier and twice as likely due to human-induced warming. Rapid analyses of this kind are crucial in the wake of extreme events, as they provide insight into the role of climate change through data and climate models.

Rescue and Recovery Efforts Continue

The flood’s aftermath has left dozens of people missing, with rescue teams working around the clock to locate survivors and recover bodies. Thus, the sheer scale of the flooding has complicated these efforts, as many affected areas remain difficult to access.

Climate Change and Future Outlook

This event highlights the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather in regions like southern Europe, where rising global temperatures make heavy rainfall events more likely. As experts and policymakers evaluate the impact of these disasters, there is a growing need for climate adaptation measures to protect vulnerable regions from future catastrophes.

The flooding in Spain serves as a stark reminder of the urgency of addressing climate change to prevent further weather extremes.

This visit follows his participation in an investment summit in Riyadh, where he met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The trip aims to strengthen Pakistan’s diplomatic and economic ties in the region.

Bill Clinton Faces Backlash Over Comments on Israel-Palestine Conflict

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton is under fire from Arab and Muslim Americans following recent comments on Israel’s role in the ongoing Gaza conflict. Speaking at a Michigan rally for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, Clinton claimed Israel was “forced” to inflict civilian casualties in Gaza, suggesting it had no choice given the circumstances. He further implied that Israelis occupied the Holy Land before Palestinians, a statement that sparked immediate backlash from groups advocating for Palestinian rights.

Michigan, a swing state with a large Arab and Muslim population, was the setting for Clinton’s comments. Addressing concerns over civilian casualties in Gaza, he argued that Israel is compelled to kill civilians due to Hamas tactics. “Hamas makes sure that they’re shielded,” Clinton stated, adding, “They’ll force you to kill civilians if you want to defend yourself.” Clinton later urged restraint from both sides, saying, “People cannot murder their way out of this.”

UN Report and Civilian Casualties

As the conflict continues, reports indicate heavy Palestinian casualties in Gaza. According to sources, more than 43,000 people—mainly women and children—have died, while Israel faces accusations of war crimes, including forced starvation. Clinton’s remarks, which downplayed Palestinian displacement during the 1948 Arab-Israeli conflict, further sparked anger. “I got news for [Hamas]—[Israelis] were there first, before their faith existed,” he stated, ignoring the 1948 displacement of Palestinians during Israel’s establishment.

Community Leaders Respond to Clinton’s Remarks

Clinton’s statements received swift condemnation from Arab and Muslim leaders in the U.S., who view them as antagonistic. Yousef Munayyer of the Arab Center Washington DC criticized Clinton’s approach on social media, labeling it counterproductive. Robert S. McCaw, government affairs director at the Council on American-Islamic Relations, issued a statement calling Clinton’s comments “insulting and Islamophobic.” He criticized the former president’s remarks as justifying Israeli actions that harm civilians in Gaza.

Impact on the Upcoming Election

Clinton’s comments may impact the U.S. presidential race, especially in states like Michigan, where Arab and Muslim votes are crucial. With tensions high in the region and global reactions polarized, Clinton’s remarks risk alienating a demographic that Democrats have been keen to engage ahead of the November election.

Retired Boeing 737 Transported by Road from Karachi to Hyderabad

KARACHI: For the first time in Pakistan, a retired passenger aircraft, a Boeing 737, was transported by road from Karachi to Hyderabad on Thursday, creating an unusual sight and sparking interest among locals.

The retired Boeing 737 covered a 154-kilometer journey, carried on a specially designed truck and trailer. The transport took around two and a half hours, with the convoy moving carefully along the Karachi-Hyderabad Motorway. The aircraft, spanning 110 feet and weighing 40 tons, had its wings and tail disassembled for the trip, which are being transported separately to reduce load and avoid obstacles.

Reminiscent of Saudi Arabia’s Boeing Transport

This road transport event in Pakistan drew comparisons to a similar occurrence in Saudi Arabia, where three Boeing 777s were moved by road across the desert in September. For many, seeing such a large aircraft transported by land was an unexpected and striking experience.

Aircraft to Aid Firefighter Training in Hyderabad

Once reassembled at Hyderabad’s Civil Aviation Training Institute, the Boeing 737 will serve as a training tool for airport firefighters. “The aircraft will play a vital role in training and safety exercises,” said Hummayun Khalid, who led the project. The institute hopes this addition will enhance practical training for emergency response teams.

Traffic and Congestion on the Karachi-Hyderabad Route

The large transport convoy caused significant traffic congestion along the Karachi-Hyderabad Motorway, even though there was no official roadblock. Motorists faced delays as the convoy moved along the route. Despite the slowdown, many onlookers stopped to capture the rare sight of an aircraft being transported by road.

A Unique Moment in Pakistani Aviation History

The overland transportation of an aircraft is a first in Pakistan’s aviation history and reflects innovative approaches in the country’s training infrastructure. This unusual transport event underscores Pakistan’s commitment to enhancing aviation safety and emergency response training through practical tools and methods.

Sindh Govt to Support Vanaspati Manufacturers’ Expansion in Karachi

KARACHI: The Sindh government has pledged full support to Vanaspati manufacturers, particularly those from Punjab, to expand their industrial footprint in Karachi. Sindh’s Minister for Industry and Commerce, Jam Ikram Dharejo, outlined the government’s plans during a Pakistan Vanaspati Manufacturers Association (PVMA) general body meeting, committing to provide the necessary infrastructure, security, and utility services to attract industrial investments.

Minister Dharejo highlighted the establishment of industrial zones in Karachi as a step towards fostering industrial growth. “We have initiated industrial zones and are prioritizing a secure and business-friendly environment for industrialists,” Dharejo stated, emphasizing the government’s aim to boost ease of business and facilitate new investments in Sindh’s industrial sector.

The meeting included industry leaders, such as PVMA Chairman Sheikh Umer Rehan, Senior Vice Chairman Asjad Arif, and several manufacturers from Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, who expressed interest in setting up industries in Karachi.

Praise for Sindh Government’s Business Efforts

PVMA Chairman Sheikh Umer Rehan praised the Sindh government’s commitment to facilitating industry growth. He thanked Minister Dharejo for attending and noted that many manufacturers were already investing in Karachi’s industrial zones due to the government’s proactive approach. “With improved infrastructure and affordable utility facilities, we can boost further investment in Sindh,” Rehan said.

Rehan also credited Dharejo for supporting initiatives previously proposed during his tenure at the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI), benefiting local businesses.

Minister Dharejo acknowledged the challenges manufacturers face, such as infrastructure needs and water scarcity, assuring the industry that these issues are priority areas for the government. He emphasized that the Sindh government, under Chief Minister Sindh, is committed to creating an environment that encourages industrial investment and development in the province.

Calls to Reduce Taxes on Edible Oils

Sheikh Umer Rehan highlighted the impact of global palm oil price increases on Pakistan’s edible oil and ghee industries. He noted PVMA’s efforts to minimize the burden on consumers but urged the government to reduce taxes and duties on edible oil products to make them more affordable. “Lowering taxes would allow us to provide edible oils and ghee at more accessible prices,” Rehan stated, stressing the importance of government support in controlling production costs.

Plans for Engagement with Federal Authorities

To ensure a stable supply of edible oils, PVMA plans to engage with the finance ministry and Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). Rehan emphasized the need for a streamlined supply chain and suggested reconsidering tax exemptions for FATA/PATA regions, which he argued could help avoid economic distortions in the market.

“If global edible oil prices stabilize, we’ll be able to offer further relief to consumers,” Rehan assured. He affirmed PVMA’s commitment to setting prices that consider consumers’ purchasing power, pledging to continue efforts to keep edible oil prices manageable despite global fluctuations.

Biden to Attend Successor’s Inauguration

WASHINGTON: President Joe Biden will attend the inauguration of the next U.S. president in January, whether the victory goes to Vice President Kamala Harris or former President Donald Trump. The White House confirmed Biden’s commitment to the tradition on Wednesday, less than a week before the 2024 election.

White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre emphasized Biden’s belief in upholding the nation’s democratic principles. “This president believes in the peaceful transfer of power, and that’s what you’re going to see this president do,” she stated. The peaceful handover of power is a deeply rooted American tradition, with outgoing presidents typically attending their successor’s inauguration at the U.S. Capitol. By attending, Biden intends to reinforce this tradition and demonstrate respect for the electoral process.

Trump’s Absence in 2021 Broke Tradition

In 2021, Trump made headlines by breaking from this tradition. After a contentious election and persistent claims of voter fraud, Trump refused to attend Biden’s swearing-in ceremony. On the morning of January 20, he departed the White House hours before Biden took the oath of office. Instead of attending the inauguration, Trump boarded a helicopter and left Washington, becoming the first outgoing president in over a century to skip the event.

Trump’s decision marked a stark departure from the longstanding norm. Traditionally, outgoing presidents have attended the inaugural event to symbolize unity and the peaceful transfer of power, even after bitterly fought elections.

Harris and Biden’s Differences on Campaign Remarks

Biden’s decision to attend the inauguration comes as his vice president and running mate, Kamala Harris, has publicly distanced herself from his recent comments about Trump’s supporters. During a recent campaign event, Biden referred to some of Trump’s backers as “garbage.” Harris, campaigning in battleground states, clarified her stance by disagreeing with Biden’s language, noting that voters shouldn’t be labeled based on their candidate of choice.

The division in messaging underscores the high-stakes nature of the election, with Harris and Biden appealing to different segments of the voting population. Harris has aimed to present herself as a unifying figure who values inclusivity, a sentiment echoed in her campaign remarks that emphasize respect for all voters, regardless of political allegiance.

Election Countdown and Inauguration Plans

With the election just days away, Biden’s commitment to attending the inauguration signals his intention to uphold the values of American democracy. He has not indicated any changes to this plan, regardless of who wins next week’s election. If Harris wins, it would mark the first inauguration of a woman president, adding historical significance to the event. Alternatively, if Trump wins, Biden’s attendance would serve as a statement of bipartisan respect and adherence to democratic principles.

The White House’s announcement about Biden’s participation in the next inauguration reflects an effort to assure the public of stability and order in the election’s aftermath. This move underscores the president’s emphasis on tradition and unity at a time when partisan divisions are high.

As the country approaches Election Day, Biden’s commitment to a peaceful transition stands in stark contrast to Trump’s actions in 2021, reminding Americans of the importance of upholding democratic values.

Harris and Trump Target Key States as Election Day Nears

As Election Day approaches, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are campaigning in critical battleground states, aiming to sway undecided voters.

Donald Trump held two rallies on Wednesday, first in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, followed by another in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The former president addressed large crowds, emphasizing his vision for the country and reiterating claims of election fraud that he has often voiced. Speaking from Green Bay, Trump stated he would accept the election results if “no evidence of cheating” was found. He expressed confidence, adding, “I think we’re going to have a big enough victory to maybe have it that night.”

Trump’s rally focused on rallying support in pivotal states like Wisconsin, where a win could significantly impact the outcome. His appearances in key regions reflect his strategy to secure a path to the White House through vital swing states.

Harris Hosts Rallies in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin

Vice President Kamala Harris also ramped up her campaign efforts, addressing rallies in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Raleigh, North Carolina. Later, she traveled to Madison, Wisconsin, where she spoke to an overflow crowd of more than 13,000 supporters. “Just like the Wisconsin state motto tells us: we will move forward, because ours is a fight for the future,” Harris told attendees at the Alliant Energy Center.

At each stop, Harris delivered a strong message against Trump, calling him “unstable, obsessed with revenge, consumed with grievance and out for unchecked power.” She positioned herself as a leader for all Americans, in contrast to Trump’s portrayal of his critics. “I don’t believe people who disagree with me are the enemy,” she said.

Reactions to Biden’s “Garbage” Comment

Harris also addressed recent comments by President Joe Biden, who referred to some Trump supporters as “garbage.” Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews, Harris acknowledged Biden’s clarification of his comments but distanced herself, saying she doesn’t support criticizing voters based on their political preferences. “I’ll give them a seat at my table,” Harris remarked, advocating for a unifying approach.

Biden’s remark drew criticism from both Republicans and Democrats. Some congressional Democrats, who are in close races themselves, publicly expressed concerns, emphasizing the need to bridge divides rather than fuel them.

Harris’s campaign efforts continue as she travels to Arizona and Nevada for events in Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Reno. She will then return to Wisconsin for additional get-out-the-vote events in Outagamie County and Milwaukee on Friday.

During her speech in Madison, Harris faced interruptions from pro-Palestinian protesters opposing Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hamas. In response, Harris stated, “We all want the war in Gaza to end and get the hostages out as soon as possible, and I will do everything in my power to make it heard and known.”

Trump Maintains Fraud Allegations

Meanwhile, Trump maintained his narrative of election fraud, a theme that resonated with his supporters. His remarks in Wisconsin reinforced his stance on election integrity, a message he has promoted since his 2020 loss, despite court rejections of his fraud allegations.

With less than a week until Election Day, both campaigns are making their final push in decisive states, with rallies and public appearances aimed at securing every vote.

South Africa Crush Bangladesh in Record Test Win

CHATTOGRAM: South Africa achieved their largest Test victory, defeating Bangladesh by an innings and 273 runs in the second Test at Chattogram. The dominant win came within three days, keeping South Africa’s hopes alive for the World Test Championship final.

Resuming day three at 38-4, Bangladesh quickly fell to 48-8 in their first innings. Mominul Haque and Taijul Islam offered resistance with a ninth-wicket stand of 103, helping Bangladesh reach 159. Kagiso Rabada led South Africa’s bowling attack with impressive figures of 5-37.

South Africa enforced the follow-on and quickly bowled out Bangladesh for 143 in just 43.4 overs. Spinners Keshav Maharaj and Senuran Muthusamy took charge, claiming 5-59 and 4-45, respectively, sealing a 2-0 series sweep.

This victory is South Africa’s ninth innings win over Bangladesh in just 16 Test matches, breaking their own record set in 2017, also against Bangladesh.

“I am incredibly proud – that was special,” said South Africa captain Aiden Markram. He acknowledged that although the journey to the World Test Championship final remains challenging, the team is focused on making it to Lord’s.

With this commanding performance, South Africa shows it is a team to watch on the road to the World Test Championship final.

Hafiz Naeem Demands Rs30 Reduction in Petrol Prices

KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has called on the government to cut petrol prices by Rs30 per litre. He based this demand on the recent decline in global crude oil prices, which have now fallen below $67 per barrel. Rehman highlighted that the government can leverage these reduced costs to ease financial strain on the public.

Speaking to Express News on Wednesday, Rehman criticized the government for imposing an additional tax of PKR 60 per litre through the petroleum levy. He labeled this as an “unjust and illegitimate” tax, urging authorities to remove it for the sake of economic relief. According to Rehman, eliminating the levy could significantly boost economic activity, providing much-needed respite for the country’s struggling economy.

Read: Google Hit with Astounding Fine of $204.8 Octillion Over YouTube Fallout

Demand for Prompt Action

Rehman stated that the government should act promptly in light of the dropping global oil prices. He said the nation’s citizens should see the benefit of reduced prices at the pump, especially as households continue to face rising costs in other essential goods. “This is a time to think about the public, who are bearing the brunt of inflated prices in every sector,” he asserted.

On October 15, the government announced a Rs5 increase in the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) per litre. Officials justified the hike, citing global price fluctuations. However, the petrol price remained at Rs247.03 per litre, a move that disappointed many awaiting a reduction.

With the next pricing review on November 1, there is speculation that the government may lower prices. Analysts say that if the reduction happens, it would offer some relief to the public in a time of economic hardship. However, uncertainty remains regarding whether the government will indeed pass on the benefits of lower global prices to local consumers.

Rehman emphasized the urgency of revisiting petrol prices and tax policies to reflect changes in the global market. He warned that continued price hikes would further burden an already struggling population, pushing many families to the brink.

Survey Reveals Alarming Mental Health Crisis Among Schoolchildren

A new survey highlights a troubling mental health crisis among schoolchildren. Four in ten children report they have no one at school to discuss their mental health with. Nearly half of them worry about reaching out for help.

The survey, which included 1,000 students aged 11 to 18, reveals that 62% of participants have experienced feelings that negatively impacted their emotional wellbeing. However, many students hesitate to utilize school services. About 26% feel embarrassed about their challenges, while another 26% are unsure who to approach for help.

Additionally, 23% of respondents believe their problems aren’t serious enough to warrant assistance. Another 23% do not trust the school staff to support them adequately. This lack of trust and fear of embarrassment significantly affects their willingness to seek help.

Emotional and Academic Struggles

These mental health struggles have real consequences. A striking 56% of students report experiencing mood swings. Meanwhile, 46% struggle with sleep issues, and 37% find it challenging to keep up with their schoolwork.

Lisa Mulherin, CEO of The Market Place, a charity supporting young people’s mental health, expressed her concerns. “It’s worrying that so many young people feel uncomfortable reaching out about mental health issues,” she said. “We must create environments where open conversations about mental health are encouraged and normalized.”

Increased Sensitivity and Relationship Issues

The study also shows that 35% of students have developed increased sensitivity to criticism due to negative emotions. This heightened sensitivity has led to further issues, with 33% becoming more irritable or aggressive. Additionally, 31% report a diminished interest in school activities.

The mental health struggles have even affected friendships. About 28% of students say they have lost friends because of their worsening mental health. Nearly two in five students (38%) attribute these feelings to academic pressures, while 32% cite stress from damaging relationships.

Factors Contributing to Mental Health Issues

The survey identified various factors contributing to these mental health challenges. Peer pressure affects 28% of students, while 24% mention body image issues and another 24% point to bullying or cyberbullying.

Anxiety is the most common negative emotion reported, with 60% of students experiencing it. This is followed by stress (50%), sadness (46%), loneliness (30%), and insecurity (29%).

Preference for Support Services Outside of School

The survey further reveals that many young people would rather seek help at a dedicated youth support service than at school. About 41% believe it would be safer and more comfortable to share sensitive information in such settings. Meanwhile, 40% feel these services offer a more neutral and less judgmental environment.

Furthermore, 39% prefer seeking help from these services because the staff are trained in mental health issues, providing expert support.

The Need for Accessible Mental Health Services

Lisa Mulherin emphasized the importance of accessible mental health resources. “It is vital young people have access to free, non-judgmental support outside the education environment,” she said.

The Market Place has launched a fundraising drive after facing significant funding cuts this year. “Charities provide a crucial lifeline, offering a safe space where students can talk openly about their struggles,” Mulherin added.

As mental health challenges continue to rise among schoolchildren, it is essential for both schools and communities to foster environments where young people feel safe and supported in discussing their mental health.

UK Government Announces Ban on Vapes by October 2026

The UK Government will ban vapes within eight months, Chancellor Rachel Reeves confirmed. This measure aims to protect public health, especially for young people. A “flat rate duty” on all vaping liquids will begin in October 2026.

During her announcement, Reeves detailed significant changes to tobacco duties. She stated, “I can confirm that the Government will renew the Tobacco Duty escalator for the remainder of this Parliament at RPI+2%.” This escalation will apply to all tobacco products, including hand-rolling tobacco.

Additionally, the Chancellor revealed plans to raise duty on hand-rolling tobacco by another 10% this year. An “additional one-off increase in tobacco duty” will also take effect to encourage people to quit smoking.

Soft Drinks Levy and Expected Revenue

The government will increase the Soft Drinks Industry Levy to account for inflation since its introduction. From now on, this duty will increase annually in line with the Consumer Price Index (CPI). These measures aim to raise nearly £1 billion per year by the end of the forecast period.

This announcement comes after new laws were proposed this month to ban disposable vape sales starting June 1, 2025. The aim is to protect children’s health while addressing the growing issue of plastic waste. Last year, over five million disposable vapes were discarded weekly, a quadruple increase since 2022.

Refills Allowed, Focus on Youth Protection

Although disposable vapes will be banned, refillable vapes will remain available. Doctors use them to help individuals quit smoking. The government expects Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland to adopt the same ban date.

The rising concern over youth vaping has prompted these actions. Reports show that many children illegally purchase disposable vapes, which often feature appealing flavors like bubblegum and candy floss.

Budget 2024 Highlights

In today’s Budget announcement, Reeves also confirmed that there would be “no higher taxes at the petrol pumps next year.” However, the public will still face a staggering £40 billion in tax increases. This includes significant hikes in tobacco and soft drink duties.

On a positive note, pubs will benefit from a 1.7% tax cut on draught alcoholic drinks, effectively reducing the cost of a pint by a penny. In a surprising twist, the government plans to unfreeze income tax thresholds starting in 2028, providing financial relief for millions of workers.

Government’s Stance on Youth Vaping

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is likely to face criticism for what some view as “nanny state” interference. This follows a series of health-focused measures, including the proposed outdoor smoking ban. Health Minister Andrew Gwynne expressed concern, stating, “It’s deeply worrying that a quarter of 11 to 15-year-olds used a vape last year.”

This statistic emphasizes the urgency of banning single-use vapes as part of efforts to combat the throwaway culture. Currently, a disposable vape retails for between £3 and £10, contributing to an estimated £2.8 billion e-cigarette industry in the UK.

Google Hit with Astounding Fine of $204.8 Octillion Over YouTube Fallout

Google faces an astronomical fine of $204.8 octillion. This amount exceeds all the money the world has ever made. The penalty stems from a long-running dispute related to YouTube’s banning of Russian media outlets.

The tech giant has spent years refusing to restore the accounts of Russian pro-Kremlin and state-run media. This situation escalated after YouTube banned the ultra-nationalist Russian channel Tsargrad and the state-run RIA FAN in 2020. Following these bans, the affected outlets filed lawsuits against Google.

According to sources at RBC news, Google began incurring daily penalties of about 100,000 rubles in 2020. These penalties resulted from the courts ruling in favor of the propaganda outlets. Since then, the penalties have doubled each week, leading to the staggering total of $204.8 octillion.

The situation worsened after Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The invasion prompted YouTube to block more Russian state-run media outlets that supported the military actions. In response, Moscow retaliated with fines against Google.

To put this fine into perspective, one X user noted that if Google were to pay Russia all the money produced since the universe began, it would only cover about 3% of the fine. A Russian judge remarked on the bizarre nature of the case, stating it was “a case in which there are many, many zeros,” according to The Register.

Google’s Response to the Fine

Despite the overwhelming size of the fine, Google is unlikely to face bankruptcy. The tech giant has been inactive in Russia since 2022, following its withdrawal after the Ukraine conflict began. Google’s Russian subsidiary filed for bankruptcy in the summer of 2022 and was officially declared bankrupt the following autumn.

Alphabet Inc., Google’s parent company, stopped all advertising in Russia to comply with Western sanctions. In its latest earnings statement, the company acknowledged ongoing legal issues related to Russia. “We have ongoing legal matters relating to Russia,” the statement read. It also mentioned that compounding penalties have been imposed due to disputes over account terminations, including those belonging to sanctioned parties.

Russia’s Technological Response

In 2023, Russia introduced a plan to create its own Android smartphone. This initiative followed an exodus of technology companies from the country. The US Department of Commerce banned consumer technology exports priced over $300 to Russia, intensifying the sanctions imposed after the invasion of Ukraine.

This desperate move highlights Russia’s struggle to maintain technological independence in the wake of increasing global sanctions. The country is seeking ways to replace the technologies lost due to the withdrawal of major companies.

Pakistan’s Economic Plan with IMF Faces Challenges

Pakistan’s economic plan, agreed with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), is under strain. Shifting targets, like growth and inflation rates, have prompted Islamabad to seek IMF adjustments on the eve of its first review under the $7 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF).

Major changes in economic indicators are affecting Pakistan’s fiscal performance. The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) expects a tax shortfall of about Rs321 billion for the first half of the fiscal year (July-December). Non-tax revenue may also fall short by Rs100 to Rs200 billion, creating a fiscal gap of Rs500 to Rs600 billion.

To manage debt costs, the government is considering lowering the policy rate by 200 basis points. This reduction could bring it to 15.5% at the next Monetary Policy Committee meeting on November 4, 2024. A further rate cut may happen in December if inflation continues to fall. However, despite these efforts, the debt burden remains high, which may force the government to cut its Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP), revised to Rs1,100 billion from Rs1,250 billion.

Tax and Revenue Shortfalls

In the first quarter (July-September), the FBR recorded a tax shortfall of Rs91 billion, collecting Rs2,563 billion. Sales tax at imports fell short by Rs147 billion. However, income tax exceeded expectations, reaching Rs1,230 billion, higher than the Rs1,098 billion target. The FBR added Rs54 billion from new income tax filers, though 2.9 million of these returns were filed as NIL. Notices were sent to 5,000 of 190,000 potential tax evaders, with assessments expected to bring in Rs50 to Rs60 billion.

Policy Actions and Future Challenges

The government is preparing an ordinance to strengthen enforcement, helping the FBR pursue tax evaders. Dr. Khaqan Najeeb, a former finance adviser, emphasized that a 3.2% growth target by 2024-25 depends on raising Pakistan’s tax-to-GDP ratio. The IMF projects an increase of 1.8% of GDP by FY25, which would require a 39% rise in tax collection despite only 12.7% nominal growth.

The FBR’s 25% revenue growth in the first quarter still missed IMF targets by 5%, indicating a need for faster revenue growth. Stabilizing Pakistan’s economy remains a top priority, though weak agricultural performance may challenge growth projections.

While FBR revenues grew by 25% in the first quarter, they fell 5% short of IMF targets, indicating a need for accelerated revenue growth in the coming months. The IMF’s focus on stabilizing Pakistan’s economy remains a priority, with attention on deficits and fiscal health, though weak agricultural performance may further strain growth targets.

Final Bidding Process for PIA Privatization Today

The final bidding process for the privatization of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is set to occur today in Islamabad. Reports from aviation sources indicate that all preparations for this crucial event are complete.

Officials have finalized arrangements at a private hotel in the capital. This bidding process marks a significant step in the government’s efforts to privatize the national airline.

Out of six potential bidders, only the Blue World City consortium has submitted an advance payment, as confirmed by sources within the Privatization Commission. This advance payment positions Blue World City as a serious contender in the bidding process.

Bid Submission and Opening Scheduled

Both the submission and opening of bids for PIA’s purchase will take place on the same day. According to aviation sources, this process ensures transparency and efficiency in the privatization efforts.

The privatization process will strictly follow regulatory frameworks and guidelines. Authorities emphasize that they will adhere to all legal requirements throughout the bidding.

New Conditions from Potential Buyers

As the privatization process unfolds, new conditions from potential buyers regarding PIA employees have come to light. During a Senate Privatisation Committee meeting, chaired by Senator Talal Chaudhry, it was revealed that interested companies are seeking significant changes.

Among the new demands is the immediate dismissal of all employees. Bidders are also requesting the acquisition of 76 percent of PIA’s shares, with the government responsible for clearing tax payments.

Concerns Over Employee Layoffs

The Privatization Commission has attempted to negotiate terms to protect employees from layoffs for at least two to three years. However, bidders have reportedly refused to commit to this condition. They express reluctance to retain employees or cover pension obligations.

This situation raises concerns among PIA employees and their unions. Many worry about job security amid the privatization efforts. Critics argue that the lack of a clear plan to safeguard employees during this transition is troubling.

The government’s approach to the PIA privatization has faced scrutiny from various stakeholders. Lawmakers and labor representatives have voiced concerns about the potential impact on employees. Many feel that the government should prioritize job security and employee rights during this process.

Despite these concerns, the government remains focused on completing the privatization of PIA. Officials believe that privatization will lead to improved operational efficiency and financial stability for the airline.

A Pivotal Moment for PIA

The final bidding process today represents a pivotal moment for Pakistan International Airlines. As potential bidders prepare to submit their offers, the future of the airline hangs in the balance.

The outcome of this bidding could significantly affect not only the airline’s operations but also the livelihoods of many employees. With the privatization set for today, all eyes are on the bidders and the government’s next steps.

As the clock ticks down, stakeholders hope for a resolution that balances the need for privatization with the protection of employees’ rights. The next few hours will be crucial in determining the future direction of Pakistan International Airlines.

Trump’s Plan to Investigate Rivals and Election Workers if Re-elected

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has made bold promises to investigate or prosecute political rivals and election workers if he wins the presidency again. He claims this is necessary to combat election fraud, despite numerous courts, state governments, and even members of his former administration rejecting these allegations.

Trump has consistently stated that he was a victim of widespread fraud in the 2020 presidential election. He specifically targets Democratic rival Kamala Harris, alleging that she may cheat in the upcoming election on November 5. His claims lack substantial evidence but continue to fuel his campaign narrative.

Kamala Harris, for her part, has warned that if Trump is elected, he will seek extreme and unchecked powers.

“The Enemy from Within”

During a recent interview on Fox News, Trump expressed concerns about “the enemy from within” on Election Day. He described radical left-wing activists as “sick people” and suggested that the National Guard or even the military might be necessary to handle potential chaos. Critics have voiced alarm over his remarks, interpreting them as a dangerous indication that he might view the armed forces as a tool against political opponents.

In an interview with popular podcaster Joe Rogan, Trump reiterated this notion, stating that “the enemy from within” is a greater threat than North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Trump has outlined plans to investigate several political figures, including Harris, President Joe Biden, former President Barack Obama, and Liz Cheney, a notable Trump critic. At a rally in Pennsylvania, Trump accused Harris of orchestrating “the biggest crime story of our time” concerning illegal border crossings, suggesting she should be impeached and prosecuted.

He has also called for military tribunals for Cheney and Obama on his Truth Social platform, indicating a willingness to escalate political tensions.

Threats Against Election Workers

On October 25, Trump issued dire warnings regarding the prosecution of individuals he suspects of election cheating. He posted on Truth Social, cautioning that “this legal exposure extends to lawyers, political operatives, donors, illegal voters, & corrupt election officials.” Trump’s rhetoric suggests an intention to pursue unprecedented levels of prosecution against anyone he perceives as involved in “unscrupulous behavior.”

Trump and his supporters have been laying the groundwork to contest a potential loss in November. He has stoked doubts about the election’s legitimacy, labeling mail-in ballots as corrupt and encouraging supporters to vote in large numbers to prevent any manipulation.

Following pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses this year, Trump told Fox News that those who desecrate the American flag should face a one-year jail sentence. He expressed a desire to collaborate with Congress to make this a reality. Additionally, Trump has stated that he would ban refugee resettlement from areas he deems “terror-infested,” such as Gaza.

Tech Sector Warnings

Trump has also targeted tech giants, warning Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Google about potential election interference. He accused Meta of suppressing damaging content during the 2020 election. Trump stated, “We are watching him closely, and if he does anything illegal this time he will spend the rest of his life in prison,” in his newly published book.

While Zuckerberg has not publicly responded to Trump’s threats, Trump has made it clear that he intends to pursue action against Google as well. He claims that Google displays negative stories about him and hinted at seeking criminal investigations against the company.

Threats to Prosecutors

Trump and his allies have openly called for the prosecution, firing, or jailing of prosecutors who oppose him or investigate his actions. In an interview with Time, Trump indicated he would consider firing U.S. Attorneys who refuse to comply with his orders.

He has specifically mentioned Jack Smith, the federal prosecutor overseeing probes into his alleged election interference and mishandling of classified documents. Trump previously labeled Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg “the criminal” after Bragg secured the first-ever criminal charges against a former U.S. president.

Lebanese PM Mikati Hopes for Ceasefire Soon Amid Ongoing Conflict

Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, expressed optimism that a ceasefire with Israel could be achieved soon. The announcement follows intensified diplomatic talks aimed at ending the hostilities between Israel and Lebanon.

Mikati’s optimism for a truce grew after his discussions with Amos Hochstein, the United States envoy for the Middle East. Hochstein, set to travel to Israel shortly, hinted at the possibility of reaching an agreement within days. “Hochstein suggested we could reach an agreement before the end of the month and before the U.S. election on November 5,” Mikati told Lebanon’s Al Jadeed television.

The discussions signal a push for immediate conflict resolution amid rising regional tensions. Mikati stated, “We are doing everything we can, and we should remain optimistic that in the coming hours or days, we will have a ceasefire.”

Draft Ceasefire Proposal Leaked

In Israel, public broadcaster Kan published a draft truce agreement it claims was authored by the United States. According to the leaked document, the proposal outlines an initial 60-day ceasefire, with Israel agreeing to withdraw its forces from Lebanon within the first week.

The alleged proposal aims to create a pause in the violence, allowing both sides to reconsider their positions while reducing the immediate human cost of the conflict.

U.S. Pressure and Regional Stability

With pressure mounting from Washington, Mikati’s meeting with Hochstein signals a potential shift toward peace efforts. The proposed timeline, aiming for a deal before November 5, aligns with the U.S. election, highlighting America’s role in moderating the conflict. The U.S. has been urging both sides to exercise restraint and prioritize civilian safety.

Hochstein’s diplomatic efforts in Lebanon and his planned visit to Israel demonstrate the urgency of finding a path to peace. The United States has been advocating for a resolution that can stabilize Lebanon, prevent regional escalation, and protect its ally Israel.

While Mikati’s remarks have raised hopes, he emphasized a “cautiously optimistic” approach. “We should remain hopeful but aware of the complexities,” he said. The ongoing violence has already left a toll on civilian lives, creating urgency for a stable resolution.

Both Lebanon and Israel have reasons for caution. Political groups and populations within Lebanon and Israel hold different perspectives on peace, complicating any truce process. Additionally, regional players with vested interests may either support or resist a ceasefire agreement.

What a Ceasefire Could Mean for Lebanon and Israel

If successful, the truce could offer a temporary halt in the cross-border hostilities that have impacted both nations. The ceasefire could pave the way for a more structured peace process, providing a vital opportunity for diplomatic discussions to advance. For Lebanon, an end to the violence would ease pressure on communities directly affected by the conflict and potentially allow for humanitarian aid to reach those in need.

For Israel, a ceasefire could bring a temporary reprieve, allowing its citizens in conflict zones to experience stability. The ceasefire would also mark a step toward diplomatic engagement, as both nations navigate political pressures and domestic responses.

With international players closely monitoring the situation, hopes remain high that a ceasefire agreement may be brokered in the coming days. As the situation unfolds, diplomatic efforts continue to provide a glimmer of hope in an otherwise fraught conflict.
