New Four-Year Degree Programme in Karachi University

The University of Karachi launched a new four years degree programme related to food science and nutrition

Karachi’s biggest university recently launched a new degree programme in the Department of Science and Technology.

The four years degree programme is about Human Nutrition and Dietetics program to cater to needs of society.

The professor in the Department of Science and Technology, Syed Ghufran Saeed mentioned that Karachi University took this decision after Covid-19 and recent floods.

He mentioned that Pakistan faced tough conditions after Covid and recent floods. There is an increase in the number of diabetic patients, patients with heart problems, high cholesterol, low physical activity, and low immunity levels.

Moreover, after the floods in Sindh and KPK, there is an added pressure of food shortage.

Therefore, this course will deal with good nutrition, importance of physical activity, and food security.

This degree is to ensure awareness regarding food crisis, food related to human health, and medicines to counter diseases.

The admissions are open for the new degree programme.

General Qamar Bajwa Shares His Views on Politics

General Qamar Bajwa addressed the audience for the last time as army chief. His tenure will end next week.

In Defence and Martyrs day ceremony, he remembered all the martyrs that gave their lives for the betterment of Pakistan.

After paying tribute to the martyrs and their families, he discussed the current political situation in Pakistan.

General Bajwa added that army will remain apolitical and is going through a catharsis.

He mentioned that the institution of army has faced severe criticism from some institutions and it should not have happened.

Army chief stated that people and political parties have the right to criticise the army, but their ‘language could have been better.’

Moreover, General said that ‘army decided in February that it will not intervene and interfere in political matters.’

He further added, ”after 2018 elections, some political parties claimed that it was a selected government, and after that when other party was replaced with vote of no-confidence, people claimed it as imported government.’

General Bajwa continued to say that ‘winning and losing is part of politics,’ political parties should understand this and adopt the true democratic culture.

Australia to Suffer Warmer temperatures and Rainfalls

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology warns Australia of rising temperatures, larger fires, and heavy rainfalls in the coming decade

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology put forward a report that suggests that Australia will have warmer temperatures, more fires, and heavy rainfalls.

Australia has seen an increase of 1.47 degrees in its temperatures over the years.

Due to this increase in temperatures, Australia suffered wild fires and heavy rainfalls which resulted in the loss of thousands of animals and wildlife.

The report further mentioned that Australia will face hotter climate and fires in southern and eastern parts of the country.

Pep Canadell, a scientist who was involved in the research publication also tweeted the details regarding the report.

He said that Australia will face a bumpy ride with climate changes in the coming decade.

Gunman Shoots at Walmart – Virginia, US

A gunman started shooting at Walmart store in Chesapeake, Virginia killing multiple people and gunman also got killed

Mass shooting cases are on the rise in the United States of America.

Recently on Tuesday, a gunman started shooting at Walmart store in Chesapeake in Virginia, killing multiple people.

The Chesapeake police revealed that the gunman killed less than ten people. They are not revealing the exact number of casualties.

Another similar event took place in Colorado, where a gunman fired at LGBTQ bar killing five people and injuring others.

However, at the Chesapeake shooting, the shooter himself died but the police has not revealed his identity and how he died.

The reports speculate that he might have died due to his self-inflicted injuries. But the police provided no confirmation.

Moreover, the police revealed that no shots were aimed and fired at them.

The official Walmart store in Chesapeake took to twitter to address this saddening news.

They tweeted, “We are shocked at this tragic event at our Chesapeake, Virginia store. We’re praying for those impacted, the community and our associates. We’re working closely with law enforcement, and we are focused on supporting our associates.”

Earthquake in Indonesia Kills 268 People

A massive earthquake of magnitude 5.6 hit the country Indonesia and near to areas to south of Jakarta killing 268 people

The earthquake in Indonesia happened on Monday and since then the death toll has increased to 268 people.

It has been reported that many of the victims who got affected were school children.

The search and rescue agency confirmed that many of the deaths consist of young children. They reported,

“Most of the casualties are children because at 1pm, they were still at school.”

The authorities revealed that the earthquake had a depth of 10km which caused a lot of damage.

However, the damage worsened because of the aftershocks that followed the earthquake.

The officials say that the earthquake wounded more than 1000 people. They also revealed that 22,000 houses got damaged and 58,000 people had to leave their homes to settle in other regions.

Moreover, they said that more than 150 people are still missing.

Indonesian president Joko Widodo visited the disaster site and said, “My instruction is to prioritise evacuating victims that are still trapped under rubble.”

Covid Cases Take a Toll in China Again

Covid Cases are rising again in China and Beijing’s authority asked the schools to remain closed during this time

China is again hit by a Covid wave as the cases are increasing every day with a new peak.

Different areas are getting affected such as Zhengzhou and Chongqing with many cases flaring up.

These areas reported more than 26,000 Covid cases.

Earlier, China’s southern city Guangzhou reported a record breaking Covid cases peak that they didn’t experience since April.

In Guangzhou, the government ordered a five-day lockdown, with schools shutting down along with parks, cinemas, theatres and clubs.

The citizens of Guangzhou were not happy with yet another lockdown and protested with their voices on Chinese platform Weibo.

The capital of China, Beijing reported 962 Covid cases. It is severe in Chaoyang district where the authorities have asked schools to close down, and students to stay home and study online.

The district have asked all citizens to stay at home and continue their work from home.

USAID Helps Flood Affected Farmers in KPK

USAID’s initiative Economic Recovery and Development Activity (ERDA) will help flood affected farmers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

USAID-ERDA program will provide assistance to agriculture, livestock, cooperative department and government of Pakistan.

It is estimated that they will provide 743 tons of wheat seeds, more than 1000 tons of fertilizer to 14000 flood affected farmers of Pakistan.

Dr. Muhammad Asrar Khan, who is the secretary of Livestock and Agriculture explained that due to recent floods, the whole Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been affected badly.

Many people have lost their homes, shelter, livestock and agricultural means.

He further mentioned that the floods severely affected the farms, as their lives depend on agriculture which was heavily damaged by the rains and floods.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government appealed to all the institutions and organizations to help the flood stricken areas and farmers.

Upon requests from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, USAID-ERDA decided to help the flood-stricken areas of DI Khan and Peshawar.

They decided to give assistance to ensure the availability of food, shelter and agricultural means.

The secretary said, “We are very grateful to USAID-ERDA for helping us in this hour of need”.

United Bank Limited (UBL) held its tenth edition of Literature and Arts Awards in Karachi on 18th November 2022

Karachi witnessed a star and media studded event of Tenth Literature and Arts Awards.

United Bank Limited (UBL) which is one of the most renowned banks of Pakistan held these awards in a five star hotel in Karachi.

Many people from the fields of media, sociality, and celebrities attended this event.

The event started with a red carpet where Yasra Rizvi and Khalid Malik hosted and welcomed the attendees.

UBL’s president Mr. Shahzad G. Dada then addressed the audience with his welcome speech.

The categories for awards included Urdu fiction, non-fiction, poetry, Urdu children’s literature, Literature of regional languages, online literature, Television drama, English non-fiction and English debut book.

At the end of the ceremony, the Life Time Achievement Award was given to Anwar Maqsood by the president of UBL himself.

The ceremony ended with many talented authors winning the grounds.

Murder Mystery of Four Students, Idaho-Moscow

Four students of Idaho University were brutally stabbed to death in their beds and the culprit is still on the loose.

A brutal killing happened in Idaho, Moscow where four students were stabbed to death in their homes while they were asleep with a big knife.

All four people were the students of Idaho University in Moscow, and lived near the University.

Out of four students, three were girls and the fourth one was a boy. All students aged 20 and 21.

Names of three girls are; Madison Mogen (21), Kaylee Goncalves (21), and Xana Kernodle (20).

The boy was 20 years old and his name was Ethan Chapin. He was in a relationship with Ms. Kernodle.

                

Apart from these four students, two other room-mates were also present in the apartment when the attack took place, and they remained safe during the attack.

However, the investigators suggest that the other two roommates slept through the attack and have nothing to do with the killings.

The autopsies of the students claim that the students have defensive marks on their bodies which suggest that they tried to fight back with the killer.

Police did not find the culprit as of yet, and it poses a threat for the society. The investigative team is trying their best to find out the culprit.

Qatar Gears up as FIFA World Cup Begins

The gulf country Qatar is ready to host the FIFA World Cup 2022 which will be one of the most expensive world cup till now

Fans from all over world are going to be gathered at this event.

It is estimated that almost 1.5 million people will watch the world cup, which is thrice the population of Qatar.

The Arab leaders including crown prince Muhammad Bin Salman will also be attending the opening ceremony of the World Cup.

Pakistan Supports ‘Loss-Damage Fund’ at COP27

COP27 conference decided that all countries will set up a loss and damage fund to help the countries struggling with climate problems

World leaders gathered in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt to discuss the affects of climate change on the world.

The conference was crucial in deciding the measures that will help the countries struggling with the affects of climate change.

European Union proposed that all countries should develop a ‘loss and damage fund’ to help the developing countries in fighting against the climate crisis.

Many countries including Pakistan suffered drastic affects of climate change in the form of devastating floods that caused a huge loss.

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif hailed this decision and tweeted, “The establishment of loss & damage fund at the UN climate summit is the first pivotal step towards the goal of climate justice. It is up to the transitional committee to build on the historic development. I appreciate @sherryrehman & her team for their contribution & hard work.”

Premier also attended the COP27 and asked the international community to support Pakistan during the times of climate crisis.

Sherry Rehman also took to twitter to support this decision by COP27. She tweeted, “now that the fund has been established, we look forward to it being operationalised, to actually become a robust body that is able to answer with agility to the needs of the vulnerable, the fragile and those on the frontline of climate disasters”.

Trump Returns to Twitter After Elon Musk’s Poll

The Tesla owner, Elon Musk ran a poll on Twitter that asked people to decided whether Donald Trump’s account should be reinstated or not.

The former president of the US, Donald Trump’s account got suspended earlier this year because because of his involvement in the attack on US capitol by his supporters.

His speech and tweets aggravated his supporters to attack the capitol.

However, in the poll almost 15 million people voted.

51.8% people voted in favour of return of Trump on the platform.

48.2% voters voted against the decision to reinstall Donald Trump on Twitter platform.

Since the majority voted in favour of Donald Trump’s return, therefore his account was reinstated on Wednesday.

After the poll was completed, Twitter owner Elon Musk tweeted, “Vox Populi, Vox Dei,”

Imran Khan’s Addresses Long March Participants

In his speech, Pakistan Tehreek e Insaaf chairman, Imran Khan discussed the appointment of new chief of army staff.

He claimed that PML-N ex-leader Nawaz Sharif wanted to appoint someone as COAS who will listen to him and move forward with his political agenda.

He mentioned, “Nawaz Sharif wants to bring an army chief, who would disqualify me from politics.”

He further added that government is trying to make amendments in the Pakistan Army Act, that would give more power to the prime minister.

After that power, prime minister will be able to retain any candidate of his choice, instead of going through a complicated process.

He proposes that the head of army staff should be elected in the similar manner as of judiciary.

 

US Grants Immunity to Saudi Leader in Khashoggi case

Saudi leader Muhammad Bin Salman has been granted immunity in the murder case of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Jamal Khashoggi, a prominent Saudi journalist and critic was murdered in Istanbul at Saudi Consulate in 2018.

Khashoggi’s ex-fiancé, Hatice Cengez filed a case against the Saudi prince Muhammad Bin Salman claiming that he is responsible for the murder of Jamal Khashoggi.

The case filed suggested that the Saudi prince and his officials have “kidnapped, bound, drugged, tortured, and assassinated US-resident journalist and democracy advocate Jamal Khashoggi”.

In the beginning, the US intelligence also believed that Saudi Prince is responsible for this murder.

But in the court, US state department stated that the Saudi prince has immunity due to him being the Saudi prime minister.

As this news was made public, Khashoggi’s ex-fiancé wrote on Twitter that, “Jamal died again today.”

EU’s Proposes to Help Climate Affected Countries

In COP27, European Union provided a proposal about financing funds for countries that have been hit by climate-stricken disasters

During the COP27 summit, all the world leaders gathered to discuss the condition of the planet and how the affected countries can be helped.

European Union proposed that strong economies should develop a special fund for covering loss and damage in the countries that are mainly facing climate issues.

The chief of climate policy Frans Timmermans said, “what we would propose is to establish a loss and damage response fund for the most vulnerable countries.”

Almost all of the countries have agreed to this proposal.

Moreover, EU has set conditions for this proposal, which suggests that countries should agree to cut planet warming emissions at all costs.

Bilawal Wants Pakistan to Review Security Policies

He suggests that Pakistan needs to review its security policies because terrorism is on the rise again.

He further added we should be “re-examining our approach and recalibrating the way that we deal with this issue in the context of the developments in our region.”

Ishaq Dar Meets President Arif Alvi

President’s secretariat revealed that Finance Minister Ishaq Dar met President Arif Alvi to brief about the economic situation

President and Finance Minister met at Aiwan e Sadr where they discussed financial and economic matters.

As President’s secretariat suggested, “During the meeting, various matters concerning finance and economy were also discussed.”

In this meeting, Dar informed the president that government is trying best to give relief to people of Pakistan especially the people who are severely affected by the floods.

They also talked about the ninth review of $7 billion by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme.

Furthermore, they discussed the economical matters of Pakistan including the default risks that the country faces at the moment.

The country requires $32 billion to meet foreign obligations and to tackle the default risks.
